Guest Review - Zootopia

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Fri, 11 Mar 2016 14:28:00 +0000

Zootopia, the latest animation from Disney has broken its own opening record with rave reviews from both professional movie critics as well as the audience, young and old. I've just came back from the theatre and I am 100% agreeable with what my friend, Ben, has to say about the movie.

It's an animation with tons of animals, behaving exactly like human beings revolving around the themes of stereotyping, dreams, betrayal and forgiveness.

In any case, let's see how bad is it, in the words of my friend, Ben :

Zootopia is a awesome cartoon for the kids and the adults. While the kids are bedazzled by the colorful talking animals, adults get a treat on a movie about racial discrimination, gender discrimination, stereotyping and chasing after one's dream.

Zootopia is set in a make-believe world where human doesn't exist, while animals are anthropomorphic. Young Judy Hoops was a rookie cop, who not only a female in an all-male environment, she was also the first bunny which was presumed to be unsuitable for the job. Striving to prove herself, she had 48 hours to solve a case of missing animal and had to team up with rabbit's natural enemy, a sly fox named Nick Wilde.

I must say I am wow-ed by this movie, definitely one of the best cartoon in the recent years. Hard to tackle topics were presented by never preachy. There were many adults jokes in it (rabbits are good at multiplying to the sarcastic remarks that the police chef is good at motivational posters) and even the widely publicized sloths’ scene suit the adults better as we would understand the animal’s characteristics better than kids.

One central theme ran throughout the movie was the issue of tags or labels. Even Judy’s parents believed that as a bunny, she was more suitable as a farmer than a police officer. Fox Nick wasn’t spared in this animal utopia when his status as fox was forever regarded as a cunning and sly person.

The voice acting was top notch with the CGI effects smooth. The plot flowed efficiently never overly draggy even when there were plenty of serious sub plots such as drug abuse and child bully involved.

4.5 out of 5 stars. Must-Watch

Have you watched the movie? What is your review?

Cheers!

Fantastic 4 - New Trailers, Posters And Banners

While large crowd of movie fans are expected to throng the cinemas over this May Day weekend for the highly anticipated Avengers - Age Of Ultron (personally, I will be watching it on next Monday in IMAX 3D), let's not forgetting another upcoming reboot of superheroes franchise, Fantastic 4.

8 years after the last Fantastic 4 movie (Fantastic 4 : Rise Of The Silver Surfer, 2007), this reboot is directed by Josh Trank (whom brought us Chronicle in 2012) and will be looking at the young adult life of the fantastic 4, hence, all casts are brand new i.e. Miles Teller (as Mr Fantastic), Kate Mara (as The Invisible Woman), Jamie Bell (as The Thing) and Michael B. Jordan (as The Human Torch).

The synopsis of Fantastic 4 (source : IMDB) :

Four young scientists achieve superhuman abilities through a teleportation experiment gone haywire. They must now use these abilities to save the world from an uprising tyrant.

Now, check out the new trailers, posters and banners below :

Fantastic 4 will be released in big screen on 7th August 2015.

Guest Review - Jupiter Ascending

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Mon, 09 Feb 2015 13:14:00 +0000

It looks like no amount of postponement and special effect can save a movie, even from the supposedly promising directors (the ones brought us the classic Matrix Trilogy). Yeah, I am talking about Jupiter Ascending, it opened last week in US with a disappointing box office standing (at number 3 with mere $19 million).

Personally, I have not watched the movie and to be frank when I saw the first trailer last year, it seems to be quite promising, especially from special effect perspective. Having said that, I think we've seen so much of equally beautiful and awesome stuff already and hence special effect alone doesn't cut it anymore.

In any case, let's see how bad is it, in the words of my friend, Ben :

Jupiter Ascending should be called Jupiter Crashed or What's so important about Jupiter? or the way to make a lazy person work hard is to let that person go through royalty.

The film was originally slated for release for June 20, 2014. But the studio delayed the film's release and pushed it back almost an entire year (9 months to be exact) to give the production more time in the post-production process. Everytime when a studio delayed the release, you know there is trouble. After watching it, I can understand why; confused plot, mediocre acting and almost no characters' development, they really need to beef up on the CGI so that audiences will not demand a refund.

Let's start with the good points. Visually there are no fault here, big budgets were spent to make the scenes vibrant and lush. The duo Wachowski siblings always has a way with concept and this time was no exception. The concept of Earth is a farm for harvest was interesting but sadly the execution was badly done.

They tried very hard to make an otherwise run-the-mill type of Chosen One plot interesting by throwing a lot of subplot and jargon terms. Unfortunately many of them were blandly delivered and often led to no resolution. Towards the end, I have no idea why Jupiter is that important, they could have close the case by harvesting the planet immediately.

Characters were painstakingly one dimensional with Eddie Redmayne (he really shined in Theory of Everything) giving one of the worst villain performances in movie history. Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum shared little screen chemistry, with Mila being the atypical damsel in distress role whose decisions in the movie made me rolled my eyes.

Jupiter Ascending is a visual feat no doubt, but I think they learned from Transformer school of movie directing, many a times the actions were so confusing and blurred that I have no idea what's going on.

Verdict 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. Watch if you like mindless action movie (not one which try to pretend to be smart), if you are looking out for The Matrix or even Cloud Atlas type of Sc-Fi movie, you maybe better off scrapping the toilet bowl.

Have you watched the movie? What is your review?

Cheers!

Guest Review - Whiplash

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Fri, 06 Feb 2015 14:10:00 +0000

Sorry for the long absence from posting. I am back and I am bringing back my friend, Ben, to provide his latest guest review - Whiplash. It is not a 3D or IMAX movie but it is deemed a MUST WATCH movie of the year (in his own word).

Whiplash is a powerful drama written and directed by Damien Chazelle with strong casts like Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons and Mellisa Benoist. Without further ado, check out my friend, Ben's equally strong review below ;

What can I say? This is a MUST WATCH movie.

To start of, I know nothing of the movie, didn't even see the trailer. What I knew it is a movie about drummer, which is evident in the movie poster that I walked pass. This is one of the movie that I will place as low priority viewing.

How wrong I am and how glad I was to catch this masterpiece. The movie is about an aspiring drummer and his relationship with the acid-tongued sadist professor of the prestigious music academy. The starting scene wonderfully described the coming love-hate tension between the pair.

The story was top notch, with turn and twists that defied what normal movies will head. Many a time, I thought of how the story would continue and the movie proved otherwise, in an unexpected but realistic way. I was siting at the edge on a movie that's not even supposed to be a thriller, and this movie succeeded in making every turn memorable. In addition, the spitfire dialogues were witty and sharp, with the constant swearing and the F words earned this movie an R ratings. This is a pity as I think this is a movie that teenagers, who are at the start of their career and life, should watch.

The chemistry between actors Miles Teller (in some way gave me hopes for the coming Fantastic Four reboot as Teller will be the new Reed Richards) and J.K. Simmons was astonishing, full of tension and yet strangely fulfilling. Both characters were flawed and yet something we all can relate to.

Ultimately this movie ask how much we would sacrifice for our dream? How much is too much? Where is the line between abuse and inspiring to excel oneself? Is it true on what Fletcher said: There are no two words in the English language more harmful than good job?

Another part that I like the movie is that it challenged you to think of the motives of Fletcher, was he just a selfish asshole who will do anything to get his goal (to win in the competition) or was his reason as noble as he claimed?

4 1/2 out of 5 stars

p/s I find actor Miles Teller looked uncanny like the late Elvis Presley.

If you have not already know, the Star Trek 3 project is already in the pipeline and recently, it is official that Justin Lin (from the Fast And Furious franchise fame) will take the helm of directorship. I like the Fast And Furious movies and am happy with the news.

I think it will be tough to tops the success brought by J.J. Abrams in the new Star Trek franchise but I hope Justin bringing in new perspective to the already popular franchise.

What do you think about the news? Are you looking forward to it?

From "I'll be back" to "I've been waiting for you"! Arnold Schwarzenegger is really back for his famous character, the terminator! Yesterday, Paramount Pictures has released the very first trailer of Terminator : Genisys which looks rather impressive.

As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. Jurassic World - First Full Trailer (Jun 2015)

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Wed, 26 Nov 2014 12:30:00 +0000

The full trailer of Jurassic World came earlier than expected!

After watching the trailer, it doesn't really give me a wow effect, I guess it is due to the tone of the trailer and didn't show much of the "action" yet. One thing worth noticing is the closing scene of the trailer whereby we might see some good dinosaurs vs bad ones in the movie!

Now, check out the trailer below and let us know your view :

Jurassic World will be released in big screen on 12th June 2015.

Guest Review - The Hunger Games Mockingjay (Part 1)

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Wed, 26 Nov 2014 12:00:00 +0000

My trustworthy movie reviewer friend, Ben is back to review the latest blockbuster - The Hunger Games Mockingjay (Part 1). Even though the box office in US is not as impressive as its predecessor but it is enough to be the highest opening of the year.

I think this is the longest movie review that he has written and can tell that he likes J Law a lot (really a lot!). Without further ado, let's check out what is his review below :

NOTE : MINOR SPOILER ALERT! PROCEED WITH CARE...

2 words – Jennifer Lawrence. The single person that elevated the entire Hunger Game movie quadrilogy, throughout MockingJay, I am thinking how lucky the studio was to sign her up for the first movie. She has the rare attributes of extremely well-liked by the audiences and coupled with her capable ability in acting. She brought out the Katniss Everdeen character from the series and made it into one that the audiences can relate to, which is very important for the first part of the finale.

Many disliked the movie due to lack of action and relatively slower pace, which to me were expected as all events were drumming up towards the explosive part 2 of the finale. Personally I loved the way the movie handled the character of Katniss’s development throughout the few movies. Katniss never did want to be chosen as “The One”, she had repeatedly stated that she would rather spend a quiet life hidden from everyone. She didn’t process any special power, other than her skills with bow and arrow; she didn’t fall in love with supernatural creatures such as vampires or werewolf; she wasn’t even specially brave or courageous. She volunteered for her beloved sister to join the Hunger Games and her other acts were mostly circumstances driven. Even in this part, she was tasked to be the rebellion symbol the mockingjay, despite her reluctance. In short she had been political tool to President Snow in “Catching Fire” and now to President Coin in this instalment. In addition, Katniss was torn between the man she loved, and the man who loved her.

This is where Jennifer Lawrence shines; letting the emotional resonance of Katniss became the biggest part of this movie. The scenes which she witnessed the horrendous power of war and her determination to save Peeta, plus her trying to live with the fact that her action (or rather involvement) in the previous movie had cost the destruction of her district, and had to live the part of symbol that she never wanted, would have degraded the movie into a melodrama in the hands of a lesser actress. J. Law pulled it off efficiently, successfully chronicle Katniss’s raised to a reluctant hero.

By splitting the original book into 2 movies, there were bound to have filler portions, especially considering the meatier parts would be reserved for the last part, but this also gave others a chance to flesh out their characters. A movie will never hold its ground without the strong supporting cast, I am not talking about heartthrob Liam Hemsworth , who was only passable in this. I am talking about the strong performance by the talented Philip Seymour Hoffman, who’s last big screen performance brought out the character of a person whose main goal was to gain viewership than the holistic goal of independence; Elizabeth Banks who’s previous performances made the writer expanded her role in the movie to good effects as every scene with her lighten up the otherwise heavy mood; and Julianne Moore as the creepy President Coin whom you know she couldn’t be trusted. I particular enjoyed the exchange between Katniss and President Snow, played by Donald Sutherland, bringing in the huge feel of cat and mouse to a deserving climax even though there were considering lesser action than most movies.

Looking back, Hunger Game series is a smart book, it had elevated the series from your usual young adult romance story to a higher level. It mocked of the current events where it is all about propaganda than the actual truth, it is now about who can manipulate the media that will win the war of the masses. My personal view is President Snow represented the traditional Emperor regime while the opposing rebel lead by President Coin had an uncanny resemblance to communism, if you know how history goes; the ending would not be pleasant for Katniss.

On the technical part, effects were well done, especially the CGI effect of Peeta getting progressively thinner signifying the torture he went though. Background music matched the scenes, scene stealing will definitely be the haunting tune of the Hanging Tree slowly starting from J. Law’s humming leading to the majestic orchestral finish, coupling with the scene of the power dam being bombed.

There was an after credit portion, frankly nothing major. If you had waited during Catching Fire, the after credit portion is the same. I do like the little details they incorporated to the motifs.

I will give this a good 4 stars out of 5, and an additional half star just for the performances of J. Law.

Here is the trailer of The Hunger Games - Mockingjay :

Guest Review - Big Hero 6 (Nov 2014)

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Wed, 19 Nov 2014 14:37:00 +0000

My friend, Ben is back with his movie review. Today, he is reviewing the cutest and hottest movie at the moment, Big Hero 6.

This comic adaptation was directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. It has all the required element to be a successful and entertaining animation (last year, we have the animation of the year, Frozen and this year, we have Big Hero 6).

Now, check out how will Ben rates the movie below..

BH6 (Big Hero 6) is the first collaboration after Disney acquired Marvel comics, it was both a risky but otherwise no choice decision as most of the Marvel’s characters were either owned by other studios (think Spider-man and the entire X-men universe) and the remaining ones are currently under live-action movie productions by Marvel Studios. Even the obscure ones like Guardians of the Galaxy, which had just finished its commercially successful run, and the Inhumans, stated for future release, are taken, there is little choice of what Disney can dip their hands into without diluting the current Marvel movies universe or risk a law suit from the other studios.

Hence BH6 was chosen which even the usual comic’s readers will find the team unheard of. It is almost like scraping the barrels. Even so, 2 of the team’s iconic members Silver Samurai and Sunspot had to be dropped from the roaster due to their affiliations to the X-Men universe, which belongs to Fox studio. But if anyone that can make this team work on the big screen, it will be the studio that popularized singing snow princess and her sister.

Storyline is the weakest link here; the flow was utterly predictable with the so-called twist expected miles ahead. (in fact during the last battle scene in the alternative universe, a kid was heard in the theatre saying “Baymax will be back later” See, you cannot even fool a kid nowdays) Despite the light hearted and bright coloured nature of the movie, BH6 tells of a bittersweet tale of how to accept the loss of a loved one. Both the protagonist and antagonist had to deal with passing of a family member and certain aspect both dealt with it similarly, turning into vengeance at one point. However glaring plot holes existed such as why would the villain picked such a manner to acquire Hiro’s microbot? He already had the access to Hiro’s research and could easily get a sample to mass produce.

Technically BH6 is beautiful, the characters’ animation and background rendering were simply superb. For once there are no annoying sidekicks or stereotyping characters that exist merely for comedic reliefs. Each character was likeable on his or her own, and finally we are spared of ill-conceived rushed romantic situations among the characters.

Of course, the star of the show is the loveable Baymax. Once again Disney has found a winning figure that’s both heartwarming and humorous at the same time. Am sure Baymax mascot will appear in Disneyland soon.

Overall, it is a decent Disney effort, not as epic as Toy Story, not as original as Wreck-It-Ralph, I will give it a 3 out of 5 stars and add another star just for the sake of Baymax. Do stay for the after credit scene which the creator uphold his tradition to appear in Marvel movies.

Have you seen Bay Max yet? What is your review?

Cheers!

Insurgent - The Cool Character Posters And Teaser Trailer (Mar 2015)

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Sat, 15 Nov 2014 12:00:00 +0000

After Divergent, what's next is Insurgent (coming in 2015) and lastly Allegiant (part 1 in 2016 and Part 2 in 2017). Even though it is similar to The Hunger Games Trilogy (Teenage novel will lady lead fighting for the survivorship of their respective community), but I quite like what Shailene Woodley did in the Divergent so far.

Recently, Summit Entertainment released a few cool character posters and teaser trailer entitled "Defy Reality". Before that, let's take a look of the short synopsis below (source : imdb.com) :

Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 (单身男女2) - My Review From Premiere

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Wed, 12 Nov 2014 12:00:00 +0000

Courtesy of mig.me, and Clover Films, managed to catch the second Chinese movie premiere in Singapore, Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 (单身男女2). Directed by famous Hong Kong director, Johnnie To (杜琪峯) with promising casts like Louis Koo (古天樂), Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅), Gao Yuanyuan (高圓圓), Vic Chou (周渝民) and Daniel Wu (吳彥祖).

I didn't watch part one of the movie and hence not able to make any comparison. Having said that, this heart-warming, feel good movie still delivers in terms of providing right amount of laughters and plot development (revolve around the love-hate relationship among the 5 main casts).

It is far from epic but if you are looking for some old fashion Hong Kong romedy (romantic comedy) movie, can give it a try over the weekend and it is best to watch it with your loved one ;-)

My rating is 2.5 (out of 5 stars).

Following are some media details of Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 (单身男女2) :

The Sypnosis :

After the “Earthling” Cheung Shen Ren (Louis Koo) loses Cheng Zixin (Gao Yuanyuan) to the “Martian” Fang Qihong, he decides to keep it cool and reverts to singlehood graciously. Cheng and Fang, meanwhile, live happily ever after…… That seems to be the fairytale ending from DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART. In reality, the story is far from over: the three finds themselves once again entangled in an even more complicated relationship in DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART 2.

After jilted by Cheng, Cheung starts dating “Goddess of Stocks” Yang Yang Yang (Miriam Yeung), who works in an opposite building. Yang has been turning a blind eye to Cheung’s philandering until she meets Paul (Vic Chou), a romantic returnee from France whose devotion has melted her heart.

Afraid to lose his lover again, Cheung determines to settle down and marry Yang, but fate works in mysterious ways. It turns out that Cheng’s wedding with Fang (Daniel Wu) has been delayed and she is now directly working under Yang. A chance encounter with Cheng again makes Cheung question his decision, because even though he appears to have emerged unscathed from their previous relationship, he was profoundly hurt and still hasn’t fully recovered.

Paul is in love with Yang; Yang has accepted Cheung’s proposal; Cheung is unable to get Cheng off his mind; and Cheng is about to marry Fang. A quadrangular relationship among five people – who is really the love of their life?

Interstellar - The Featurettes That You Need To See (Nov 2014)

noreply@blogger.com (Richi Rich) — Fri, 07 Nov 2014 12:00:00 +0000

Finally, the maestro of sci-fi movies, Christopher Nolan's latest masterpiece, Intersteller is here! Yes, it is a sci-fi but the master ambitiously trying to blur the line between science and fiction. I must say that once again, he delivers!

If you still remember his earlier masterpiece, Inception, you might doubt that he can better himself after that! He is here to prove us wrong and the resounding answer is : he CAN! Intersteller is much grander than Inception in terms of his ambition and vision to challenge our view of the world that we are living in.

With promising casts like Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine and Matt Damon and their out-of-this-world performance (pun intended), it is a true master piece that all sci-fi fans should watch (if you have not already done so).

Short synopsis of Interstellar (source : IMDB.com) :

A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Paramount Pictures has just released a few cool featurettes, check out the combo below :

Bonus clip :

Interstellar will be released in the big screens today, 7th November 2014 and it will be in IMAX too.

Cheers!

P/S : I've watched the movie yesterday and I am giving it a 4 stars (out of 5) rating. It is close to 3-hours long and do expect the awesome twist at the end ;-)
