We prayed that the NE Monsoon will end before our inaugural trip to Sibu island, Malaysia.

We checked the weather forecast daily before our event and there were bad news. The monsoon was still in full force! We were facing the possibility of headwinds between 10 - 20 knots and we had anglers coming back from the area reporting really bad choppy waters! The smaller kayaks might be in for a tough journey.

Our accommodation were booked and fully paid for and there was no turning back.

There was an option for anyone who is not keen to attempt kayaking over, to take the resort’s ferry and leave their kayaks behind. Nobody took the ferry option! Everyone was keen to go on an adventure of a lifetime and hopefully return to with a tale to tell.

There was a small window between 10am -12pm when the head winds was at it’s weakest, after studying the weather pattern but it was still a challenging 10-12 knots, on the average. We targeted to make the best of this “sweet zone” as the afternoon wind could exceed over 18 knots! We had to be on the water by 10am and cover as much ground as possible.

There were 11 kayak anglers with 10 family members. The supporting family members took the ferry over.

The Hobie Adventure Islands and Tandem Island acted as the mothership. They followed closely behind the smaller kayaks, conducting wide sweeps behind. Tacking and enjoying the windy condition.

We completed the crossing in less than 3hrs.

As we landed on the soft beach of Sibu Island, big smiles and high 5s where everywhere as we celebrated the accomplishment.

With the toughest part of the journey over, we went on to one of the most relaxing and best kayak fishing experience.

Members of Team Hobie Singapore compiled some of the video highlights using iMovie and created an awesome short movie trailer to get new subscribers to join Hoooked TV, on YouTube.

It has been an exciting and fun filled year as the Hobie kayaks allow the experience kayak angler to explore more challenging waters and new playground.

2013 is a year of exploration and this will continue well into 2014. The team hope to find new fishing grounds to serve as a motivational factor for the kayak anglers at large. There are certainly no shortage of potential fishing area.

This year, the team landed Cobia, big Queensland Groupers, Queenfishes and even a Shark. The sea never failed to surprise the kayak anglers.

Landing a monster fish - Kayak Fishing tips.

Giant groupers comes close to our shores to breed. Many will swim here from the deeper waters seeking sheltered waters for delivering their babies.

We have consulted many experience boat anglers on the technique to target these monsters but were always advice against it. They knew the awesome pulling power of these fishes and felt that the kayaks anglers wouldn't stand a chance against it.

We can't lock our drags or use heavy gears that the boat anglers usually deploys. There was a real possibility that the fish initial burst could capsize our kayak! Neither could we afford to be on a light tackle.

Our game plan was to out-maneuver it and using the powerful Hobie MirageDrive pedal and rudder control system, our game plan was to power it out into the open waters before we even start reeling our first crank!

The strategy:
1) Pedal fast towards an open area, on strike.
With the kayak moving forward, we reduce the risk of capsizing but the strong initial run. We must constantly stay in control!
The Hobie MirageDrive system transmits instant powerful thrust that fitted our game plan.

2) Everyone in the team must be familiar with the underwater terrain. It is very important as we do not want to power it towards the wrong direction.
Buddies around could help to shout out directions and reminds the "lucky one" to stay calm and resist the temptation to reel in.

Bottom-line: "PUMP PUMP PUMP the MirageDrive ...... don't worry ... you are in control .....stay focus and true to the game plan.

Hobie Fishing by Hoooked - Queenfish

It was a hazy start to the day.

The southerly wind was blowing the haze over Singapore from Indonesia. The PSI reading must have hit the unhealthy level, as I could hardly see the usual islands around me.

With the wind blowing towards us, the sea was a little rough for a comfortable day out kayak fishing.

Nevertheless, we headed out with a positive note. Consoled ourselves that it was a cloudy and windy day, it is simply perfect. Well, It is definitely better than a day out under the hot sun especially on a windless day!

Against the wind and current, our little kayaks performed well as we chatting away but with our eyes glued to the fish finder. It took us about an hour of paddling or rather pedaling to reach a nice drop-off. The bait fishes were below us.

2 kayaks, 2 different style of fishing.

My buddy focused on using madai and jigs, while I focused on catching some small fishes for bait.

I just rewarded myself with a Hobie livewell and wanted to maximize on my purchase.

The bait fishes were biting but they were too big for my likings. Dinner size "kuning" gave my light tackle a good work out, especially when I had a string full of it. It didn't took long before my buddy had a fish on but he screamed in frustration as he lost a fish on a strong take and I haven't even started really fishing yet!

I continue my hunt for bait fishes. Half an hour later, I pedaled towards him with my head shaking ... I was still technically bait less. He gave me that cheeky smile and pulled out a grouper weighing more than a kilogram from his yak. Dinner is here!

We celebrated and parted ways. I was drifting along the edge when suddenly my sounder screen was filled with "fish clouds", from a depth of 5ft to 25ft. Full house! I drop my tamban jig and up came 2 nice size bait.

Quickly, I rigged one up and drop it into the middle of the baitfish frenzy. Tok ... Tok ... Tok ..... my line started going against the current .... there must be a fish on it. I lifted the rod tip up a little and ... Wham! ... the reel immediately started screaming with line peeling away, as soon as I set in the hook.

A big splash followed through as the fish made some dramatic flights out of the water .. I had a big Queenfish!!! Woooooooo ....... hoooooooo" .... . The commotion attracted a coast guard boat parked nearby and they came and watch the action. They must be anglers too! It is only instinctive.

As the fish swam towards the deeper end of the drop-off, I quickly turned on the camera and ........ you simply have just to watch the rest of it!

The foreign talents (FT) have been in the spotlight over the past few months, for the wrong reasons.

There is one FT that we missed and will warmly welcome him here with a red carpet by the kayak fishing community. He is our "grandmaster" of kayak fishing. The crazy Englishman, who introduced kayak fishing to the community here, luring us with his beautiful essays and catch reports.

He was here for the weekend and contributed to our economy by shopping with a deep pocket, at his favorite tackle shops.

We met on Beach road for a late lunch, where he reloaded his tackle boxes with fresh ammo before we headed off to the Singapore Expo to pick up some great bargains - Columbia wears. (His kayak fishing uniform).

The adventure began with our usual debate on where will be the best place to kayak fish over the weekend after taking into consideration the tide and our timing.

I was also eager to show him some of the new fishing tricks that I have picked up during his absence, from the local scene. After a short discussion, we decided to go on a strict kayak luring trip.

Though I was confident that I was able find some fishes, I had some reservation - going without live bait. He had a limited time to "play" and I didn't want to disappoint him, especially after all the effort he took, to spend the weekend here.

I asked repeatedly, "Bait or no bait?" ... "Bait have higher chances of getting the fishes, .....on lure, we will have to work harder and we might end up fish less."
He was up for the challenge to go luring only and was prepared to go home without a fight.
Ian declared, "It will be more challenging and fun to catch a fish on lures, lets go without bait",.

I have my fair share of success luring and was confident that I have the right ammo, for the right fish and at the right place with exception to the tide as it was just not "quite right". We needed lady luck to be with us.

I set him up, on a Revolution 11, for his first Hobie kayak fishing experience.

He was delighted and was impressed by her performance and he was going all over the places. It was like a having a kid on his new toy car and driving wild, in a big playground.

The morning started really slow. We jigged, lured, trolled ... and I gave every trick that I have under my "tall hat". The fishes were not impressed. I quietly wished we had brought some live ammo. We were shooting blanks! The only consolation was that my buddy was having fun with his MirageDrive system.

The actions suddenly picked up only when the tide started to fall. A snapper was the first to fall victim to the plastic.

Ian drifted in after I have released the fish and asked to see the lure that tempted the snapper, I winded it back really fast and only slowed down as it came close to my kayak, when suddenly a catfish slammed into it! The surge gave me an unexpected shock and I was off to another fight on my 6lb tackle.

Ian was impressed and complimented on my luring skills but in reality it was actually an accidental skill.

Ian have not landed his first fish for the day and I could feel the desperation. The noon sun was overhead and it was blazing hot.

My brain went: "Think think think ... think like a fish ...merv" .... "where will I be hiding on a falling tide, waiting for food to come by if I am a hungry fish?"

BINGO!

First cast into the "thinking zone" and a giant herring took the lure. We both lost our first herring of the day. Over the next half an hour, we had lots of wet splashes and fun. We stopped only after we had enough of catching the same fishes. They were still playing but we had enough.

We decided to hunt for the biggies. The fishes might be active in the honey pots that were empty earlier.

True enough, on my first misfired cast that landed oddly by a structure, it was walloped by a monster, on my first crank of the reel! That lure never saw the lights and my tackle was under power to fight against the sudden burst of energy. I lost the potential grand finale fight.

We went back there too late. The actions came to a complete stop after that.

Though we didn't managed to land any prize fish, we were both happy to be out on the sea and kayak fishing together again.

It was like the old time when we will screamed happily, with each fish we were on.

The scream of joy goes ..... "oooooooooooooooo whoooooooooo .. FISH ON!!! .... OOoooooooooo". The harder the fish fight, the more "oooooo" ..and ...." yeahs" and more "....Ooooooo .. (laughter)..... Oooooooo...".

The "ooooo's'" was the reason behind the extra "O" in the name - "Hoooked". It reminds me of the happy moments, that got me hooked and addicted to kayak fishing. Hoooked was born with the passion for kayak fishing and she is now the proud representative of Hobie® - "designed for fishing" kayaks.

My buddies and I decided to bring out our heavier tackles on a recent kayak fishing trip, in Singapore.

As we set off the beach, we could feel the stares from the anglers, fishing off the beach. They gave us the positive and friendly nodded but somehow we could feel the “cynical feel" behind their smiles. They must be laughing at us from the inside, "the kayak anglers must be crazy today, probably thinking that they are setting off to a fishing adventure in Australia.

We were a little embarrassed too. But we held our heads high. There was no bait and small lures on us, we were determined to hit big or nothing.

We hyped ourselves a few days before the trip simply by “thinking big” or “dreaming big” plus believing ourselves with the “Sure have” attitude.

With nothing else to distract us, we were forced to focus and aimed only on the special one. “

Having the right buddies around me was important as we will encourage each other positively, joked, laugh but never cynical. We will try different styles, different toys, different tide, different timing ... etc.
There was another plus point with this team of guys .... they constantly practiced CnR, so they are fine with going home empty handed. That alone took away the stress from the “must catch fish” pressure.

There was no reason for us to downsize and target the masses. We were out for The Exclusive One.

This beautiful fish is still swimming and hopefully breeding along our coastline.
