Jonni!!! Thank you so much for the cap suggestion for you clownfish mask. I have been using your patterns for years & love making headdresses for our musicals (making sure the kiddos faces can be seen while they sing and dance). We do not have the costumes finished yet, but our little Nemo was so excited to try on her headdress. More coming soon (Nigel & Bruce)!!!

I really like the Limu Emu …..so much so that I decided to make one . This guy is paper mache on a cardboard and wooden support . I cut thin strips of paper for the feathers . The sunglasses are made from wire and soda bottle plastic . The project was painted with acrylic paint .

I intended to make a one eyed cat mask for my sister whose cat was hit by a car and lost his eye. Because this was my first PM mask, I also made 3 prototypes which are now hanging above the shoe rack! I used plastic wrap to cover the template so I could reuse it for all 4 as it takes some time to cut and tape the template together. Learned a lot with these prototypes- the yellow was my first and he caved in when I removed from the template to early.

I made all of these with fully biodegradable materials. The glue was flour and cornstarch based. The paint was made with foraged clays and charcoal and a binder of either egg yolk or homemade watercolor. I am attracted to making biodegradable art as I endeavor to minimize environmentally harsh waste in my art. I also work in the kitchen near my children so non toxic material are very important to me.

The director of the drama club at my sons’ school asked me to help evoke 1930s New York City in the auditorium for the spring production of Annie Jr. We settled on city landmarks for 2D murals, but I wanted to add something 3D. The prior year, volunteers created a revolving door for Elf Jr. to evoke Macy’s Department Store.

I slightly modified the pattern technique for animal bodies by projecting a photo of the statues onto a large piece of cardboard. This gave me the shape for the center/spine of the armature, and some outlines for the leg sections. I did some math so that the mask would be proportional to the rest of the body based on the proportions of the sculpture photos.

Reference photos were key as I built out the body, and I actually even found a close-up of the unfinished statue from the sculptor’s studio.

When I was still aiming for two lions, I alternated building the armature on each, so they were relatively matched. I used SO many recycled plastic grocery bags!

Fitting the head was pretty easy. I knew the mane would cover some of the gaps. I simply moved the cap pieces up to form a more rounded back of the head.

When I got to the mache stage, I found out I should have been pickier about my masking tape brand. Thin weight for the face and thick for the body will be my vow on my next project. Initially, I was using thin weight for the body, too. The thin masking tape started separating from the sculpture between building sessions and I had to retape a bunch I hadn’t wanted to.

My ambition didn’t match my time, but I still got one lion finished. I draped muslin for the main to imitate the smooth marble material of the original. The kids, and other audience members were awed by the scale and the realism of the face.

I was looking for dragon masks when I came across Jonni’s paper mache mask patterns. It was easy with the instructions and so much fun to make! It was a big hit at Comic Con though I would advise not leaving it on the ground or at least putting some extra strengthening stuff on the mask before bringing it in public.

Overall the mask was a great and sturdy project that I would totally recommend!

Just finished this lion mask using your template! I misunderstood and used paper mache clay for the whole mask, but it still turned out great! Will be using as Aslan for a play!

Our team for the past Halloween was pumpkin monsters, 3 of the heads are full pumpkin heads , my oldest daughters head was half paper-mache and half liquid latex and paper towels. She was turning into a pumpkin monster so half of her face had some human features still.
