Researchers at the University of Michigan have made a significant breakthrough in addressing the rapid degradation of perovskite semiconductors, a development that could potentially lead to solar cells that are two to four times less expensive than current thin-film solar panels. Perovskite solar cells, while more environmentally friendly than their silicon-based counterparts, suffer from a shorter lifespan due to degradation when exposed to heat, moisture, and air.

To enhance the stability and overall lifespan of perovskite solar cells, the researchers focused on identifying molecules that could prevent rapid degradation. They found that bulky “defect pacifying” molecules were particularly effective in increasing the stability of perovskite films. These molecules, when added to the perovskite crystals, prevented defects from forming at high temperatures, thus enhancing the material’s durability.

The researchers created three additives with different shapes and sizes, each containing similar chemical building blocks. Larger molecules, by mass, demonstrated better interaction with perovskite crystals, effectively preventing the formation of defects. However, the study also revealed that the size and configuration of the additives were crucial.

Bulky molecules were found to be the most effective, as they not only interacted strongly with perovskite but also forced the formation of larger perovskite grains during manufacturing. Larger grains resulted in lower densities of grain boundaries, reducing the areas where defects could form.

The discovery opens the possibility of creating more cost-effective and durable solar energy solutions by combining perovskites with silicon-based semiconductors, potentially surpassing the maximum theoretical efficiency of silicon solar cells; These findings provide valuable insights into designing additives for perovskite solar cells, moving away from time-consuming trial-and-error methods.

TDK 9-Axis Sensor Promises Super-High Accuracy for Consumer Tech

TDK was demonstrating its latest motion and direction sensing solution at CES 2024. Its “Super high accuracy position sensing solution” uses three sensing mechanisms to know how devices move in space and in which direction they are pointing.

Note: In the photo above, the screen shows a top view of the object I hold in my hand. The position and orientation are accurately tracked in real time.

These three mechanisms are a Gyroscope (orientation), an Accelerometer (relative position), and the Tunnel Magneto-Resistance, also known as TMR (also linked to orientation). By using all three in combination, TDK can vastly improve the accuracy at any given time, especially when it comes to the orientation of the device, in my opinion.

Here, the Gyroscope and Accelerometer (6-axis) are integrated into a TDK ICM-456xy chip, while the TMR (3-axis) is a standalone module that probably has one TMR per X, Y, and Z axis inside. Note that TMR should not be confused with a Magnetometer, which is typically used for Compass-type applications.

Think about all the times you have tried to use a mapping application on your handset and the phone’s orientation has been completely wrong. That’s so frustrating because you now have to walk for a few yards or more to see if you are heading in the right direction. It’s a hard problem to solve, so phones often don’t get this right and need visual help, such as Google’s “Live View” feature in Google Maps.

TDK assures us that its SmartMotion + TMR solution would make this behavior a thing of the past and that your TDK-powered sensor would always indicate a correct orientation out of the box without requiring frequent calibration.

This technology can also improve positional information coming from the motion sensor because the TMR’s data can be fused with inputs from the Accelerometer and the Gyroscope to provide an additional data point used to correct positional drift, a common problem when using Accelerometer and Gyroscope without TMR. Although drift issues would not completely disappear, they can be drastically reduced.

Everything required to provide high-quality motion and orientation data is embedded in the chips, including sensors, computing power, and algorithms (software).

As you can imagine, any application that requires accurate positional and orientation data might benefit from this TDK technology, and the company’s officially supported application is as follows: “IoT, Navigation, Industrial application, Wearables, Smartphones, Activity Monitors, Smart Watches, Drones, Toys, Sports Applications.”

The hardware consists of a 15.6” mirror display that is easily installable in any location because it hangs with magnets. It’s also possible to get a 32” version, but a stand is required because of the extra weight.

SpaceX has launched the first six Starlink satellites equipped with “Direct to Cell” capabilities, functioning as “cellphone towers in space” to provide cellular transmissions for T-Mobile and other carriers. The enhanced Starlink satellites feature an advanced modem that acts as a cellphone tower in space, eliminating dead zones and enabling global access to texting, calling, and browsing.

Several international carriers, including Rogers in Canada, KDDI in Japan, Optus in Australia, One NZ in New Zealand, Salt in Switzerland, and Entel in Chile and Peru, have also partnered with Starlink for direct-to-cell service.

While SpaceX CEO Elon Musk highlighted the capability for mobile phone connectivity anywhere on Earth, he acknowledged a significant bandwidth limit, supporting approximately 7Mb per beam. The service’s primary focus is locations with no cellular connectivity rather than direct competition with existing terrestrial cellular networks.

Starlink’s direct-to-cell service is expected to provide text messaging in 2024, with voice and data services slated for 2025. Notably, the low Earth orbit satellites will be compatible with standard LTE phones, eliminating the need for specialized satellite devices. SpaceX’s direct-to-cell satellites are also set to connect with Internet of Things (IoT) devices by 2025.

T-Mobile plans to commence field testing of Starlink satellites soon, aiming to address connectivity gaps in areas with challenging terrain, land-use restrictions, or vast stretches of ocean. The partnership between SpaceX and T-Mobile was announced in August 2022, with initial beta service anticipated by the end of 2023. However, the testing has been postponed to 2024, starting with text messaging, followed by voice and data coverage in subsequent years.

Mondrian AI: Yennefer Enterprise AI Platform

Mondrian AI (official site) is a company that describes itself as having an “End-to-End AI Platform for the entire AI development process,” including a consulting service to put a complete solution into service from a customer’s business request and needs.

Mondrian’s Yennefer Enterprise AI Platform (link) looks very complete and handles hardware resource allocation, AI model deployments, and the data pipeline from where it is stored through processing to the end-user dashboard.

Although AI is the primary focus these days, the company has built expertise in data science and data visualization since they tend to use a similar stack and are in high demand by various customers.

Yennefer is designed to handle the complete development workflow and can interface with standard tools such as GitHub, the large public clouds where code and data are. Customers can then build their data processing with the model of their choice and define their system configurations by software. Finally, this is all deployed and managed in production.

Such a platform can greatly accelerate how fast a complete solution can be deployed. Most companies, even huge ones, don’t have the engineering resources and know-how for every business unit or key project to deploy a major AI project.

That’s where the consulting aspect of Mondrian AI can give it an edge with specific customers, especially those who want to deploy something complex relatively quickly. While there are more and more platforms that claim to perform similar tasks, the business is expected to provide its own engineering or consultants. Just finding or selecting these can already be challenging.

Customers who want to run their AI workflows on-premises might be articulately interested in Yennefer as it was built for that. Many startups like starting their operations on public clouds for convenience, but large, established companies are often stricter about where their data can reside.

Mondrian must also choose its projects carefully, as its engineering resources aren’t limitless. It has worked with prestigious companies such as Samsung, SK Telecom, Seoul University, and the Incheon Airport.

Interestingly, the company is also building its own ChatGPT-like system, optimized for the Korean language. The large language models (LLMs) we typically hear about are trained with English language content, and it’s not uncommon to hear developers complain about the lack of datasets to train LLMs in other languages.

Now, AI-based applications use the RAG (Retrieval augmented generation) architecture to build chatbots that can answer specific or proprietary questions. However, RAG relies on a high-performing LLM. Mondrian AI thinks its upcoming LLM can do the job, which could be a powerful argument for Korean companies to adopt the platform.

Building a platform with such depth is impressive for a young company. There are a lot of moving parts that require cross-disciplinary expertise in addition to production knowledge as well.

Sheco Swarm Water-Drones Pioneering Large-Scale Pollution Removal

SHECO (official site) is a startup which produces largescale pollution-removal solutions for public waters or various industrial environments such as ports, shipyards, industrial plants etc. located nearby bodies of water at risk.

Water-pollution events only make it to the evening news when they are large or catastrophic. Every day, there are about 3200 “pollution incidents” worldwide, and 256 such incidents in Korea alone. Fortunately, 92% of them are small-scale events (70% caused by small ships), but since water pollution is cumulative, it’s important to address as many of them as possible to maintain water as clean as possible.

Pollution might be of chemical nature (oil and other) but there are also cases of “natural” pollution, such as Algae, that have undesirable outcomes and need to be remediated. Algae is considered by Sheco as a “water quality management” while oil and other chemicals are a “contaminants response”.

Without a doubt, some of you may have seen oil cleanup operations on TV. It’s messy and sometimes involve the large-scale release of chemicals that are barely better than the oil itself. And in hard-to-access areas, manual cleanup is both difficult and exposes workers to potential toxic elements.

Unsurprisingly, Sheco’s solution involves… robots! Essentially, the company has created several types of water-drones that can roam within a polluted area and remove the pollutant. While this sounds simple, such implementation doesn’t really exist at scale because it’s extremely complicated to do.

Seawater is already a harsh environment, but swimming in chemicals makes things even more difficult. Secondly, a lot of typical contaminant response involves trying to break down the pollutant using other chemical products… releasing even more chemicals in the environment.

Sheco takes a smarter approach and uses a real-time filtering technology. This seems to work based on a gravity filtration technique that relies on how different liquids end up floating in different spaces based on their composition. With this separation, Sheco’s drones can remove as much of the pollutant as possible and reject cleaner water immediately. If needed the drone can make a second pass at the same location.

The company has ways to recognize various pollutants with imaging techniques that recognizes how light is reflected off different chemicals. This can even work at night with the proper hardware. The recognition itself is done via machine-learning techniques (A.I) and is one of the proprietary advantages of this startup. Looking at the technical details, I see Sheco using A.I vision techniques such as image segmentation or super-resolution.

The drone themselves are a bit smaller than a car and offer ways to extend their filtering capacity and other modules. However, the general principle is that they are of a manageable size (from an industrial standpoint) and they are designed to work in swarms. Finally, the robots can work almost autonomously with a bare minimum of human supervision, making it scalable and easily deployable. If needed, the robots can be manually piloted.

While I was in South Korea meeting with representatives of IFEZ (Incheon Free Economic Zone) in Songdo, we had an opportunity to see and touch one of the Sheco Ark cleanup drones. The drones have a very robust metal build, but we noticed that some parts were 3D-printed. Their size seems like a good balance between what it can clean up, and how easy it would be to transport using regular-size trucks.

Sheco will attend CES 2024 to talk about this drone to find global partners. In recent years, it’s been exciting to see so many new technologies which help keep our water clean, whether it is by removing chemical pollutants, or grabbing floating plastic far away from the shores.

Smart Farming for Healthier Herds: FarmPro’s FarmPlusCare

Livestock farming is a challenging business that gets riskier and more expensive as of late. One of the fears many farmers have is that having a dense congregation of animals might make infectious diseases spread much faster, leading to mass mortality and low productivity. We’ve certainly seen recent cases where millions of animals have been culled in recent years because of this kind of issue. Whether it is Korean cattle with lumpy skin, Danish minks, Japanese chicken, or Chinese pork, this is a high-risk scenario that plays out on a regular basis.

FarmPro believes it has a solution to this challenge. Its FarmPlusCare hardware product is a real-time monitoring device for large livestock (like cows) that collects health data such as temperature and activity every 10 minutes. The device is about the size of an iPod, weighs 50g, and can sense 0.1 degrees C temperature variations. If you want to see it, FarmPro will be at CES 2024.

The device is installed near or on the ear of the cattle, which is why it wouldn’t work on smaller livestock, for now. The data is fed into a database from which it can be analyzed by their algorithms. Users have a dashboard that is accessible from a mobile app or PC.

Body temperature tracking is a great tool to detect infections at an early stage, giving farmers enough time to isolate sick animals and avoid mass contagion. It is apparently possible to extract insights such as whether an animal has eaten or had enough to drink.

There’s a simple notification system, just like any other app. The tracker also helps with more positive outcomes and tasks such as tracking and managing the births, pregnancy, and delivery schedules.

At a high level, this may appear simple, and one must wonder why this wasn’t done by every farmer before. However, the implementation of these concepts is very difficult. FarmPro’s founders have experience actually running farms and are well aware of things that need fixing. For instance, the hardware is very well designed to run in a farming environment where things can get rough, with temperatures, dirt, humidity, and even shocks, which can be problematic.

So far, FarmPro has deployed its solutions in several countries. For example, some farmers in Argentina have used the system for the past three years. Other places include France, Mongolia, and more. As you can guess, New Zealand and Australia are high on the list of countries FarmPro would like to expand next. The company’s data is encouraging, with a rise of 20% in milk production and a 50% drop in diseases.

From a business standpoint, the company estimates the business opportunity to grow to $736M by 2030. Their strategy so far is to have new customers get on board and run the system free for one year. After that, the service becomes a recurring subscription, essentially after the customers had time to see the benefits.

FarmPro is eager to get new customers up and running, so they are quite aggressive with the hardware pricing, which they say is about ~30% less expensive than competitors. Hopefully, future hardware revisions can open the market to smaller (and more numerous) animals such as sheep/lamb.

Meerkat by Smart Geotech: Impressive Soil Movement Detection for Global Safety

Smart Geotech (official site) is an IoT startup specializing in sensor technologies that alert and protect against soil movements such as landslides or rock falls. As Californians (Ubergizmo is based in San Francisco, CA), we’re very aware and mindful of these issues because they happen on a regular basis in our area because of earthquakes and seasonal rains.

While there isn’t much that can be done to prevent such occurrences, having advanced warning technologies can help save lives by evacuating people when the probability of danger passes a certain threshold. That’s really hard to do because such events happen suddenly when soil can no longer retain a certain load or when a large boulder suddenly cracks.

Smart Geotech claims to have a solution called Meerkat with very accurate and cost-effective sensor hardware coupled with an efficient and smart machine-learning (“AI”) model that can send relevant warnings with a low rate of false positives.

The company’s hardware consists of a stick-like IoT sensor that should be planted at a 90-degree angle from the soil’s surface. That way, surveying slopped surfaces and even rough terrain like the ones from which rocks would fall is possible.

It sounds obvious and simple, but many competing systems rely on a flat surface because their internal sensor alignment requires it for optimal accuracy. That’s not the case for Smart Geotech, according to their representative. Their sensors are said to detect 0.01mm soil movements. That’s a much higher resolution than the 5mm that many competitors have.

Also, depending on the installation type, having a flat surface helps ensure that the sensor’s weight won’t put it out of alignment. The downside is that building flat surfaces requires ground preparation and some concrete. Sometimes, it’s simply not possible in some places.

Meerkat’s stick-like sensors must only be planted or drilled perpendicularly into the ground and remain there permanently since they are weather-proof (IP65) and solar-powered. Once there, they wirelessly transmit data back to a base station, making the deployment as simple as possible. Depending on the situation and the budget, there are several mesh wireless protocol options, such as LoRa (Long Range), WiFi, LTE, etc.

The data is continuously analyzed using an AI trained on research datasets Smart Geotech has access to. It is also trained with publicly available datasets in their industry. Between its sensitivity and AI training, Meerkat can warn hours before an event rather than minutes. If true, that could be the difference between life and death during a landslide, especially since alerts can be sent directly to smartphones.

This product is interesting because it has a potential global reach and seems very innovative in an industry not known for its pace of innovation. It is currently installed in 30 sites in Korea, such as reservoirs or construction sites, where soil collapse could do a great deal of damage. Talking about global expansion, I’m sure California could use a system like that in many strategic locations.

From Nano-Tech to Global Impact: Jchi Global Eco-Friendly Materials

Jchi global (official site) is a startup that specializes in nano-technology materials that have an eco-friendly impact and that could be utilized on a global scale, which makes them particularly interesting in this period where “Green” technologies of all kinds are at the forefront of everyone’s (corporate) plans.

One of their most interesting technologies is the visible light-responsive photocatalysts. Activated photocatalysts are substances that will modify the rate of some chemical reactions when exposed to light (= photons). Jchi uses TiO2 (Titanium oxide) as a photocatalyst in different materials, making them react differently with their environment. Of course, there’s more to it than just using TiO2, and Jchi has 21 patents that protect its intellectual property (IP).

TiO2 has been used in many applications for its various properties, including a high refractive index. For example, you can find it in some anti-fogging glass or even FDA-approved food applications, dental paste, etc. As such, it is considered “non-toxic” by many, although that topic is still under intense research and some debate.

Other general applications include sterilization, odor removal, purification, pollution prevention and more. That’s a very versatile and useful set of potential applications. During our chat with Jchi, they mentioned using their photocatalyst in conjunction with artificial turf manufacturing to extend the lifespan of these artificial ground covers.

Turf has a typical lifespan of 6-7 years as it degrades when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) and other elements. However, according to the company, turfs manufactured with a mix of plastic and Jchi’s photocatalyst might have 2X the longevity. Obviously, that would have a major impact on how often one would have to renew such products, reducing or delaying plastic utilization.

Jchi’s photocatalyst would also help reduce the maximum temperature of any turf when that area is exposed to full sunlight. As you may have experienced, turf surfaces are significantly hotter than natural grass during hot and sunny days. The photocatalyst would help reduce this effect but won’t equal real grass.

And this is not just theoretical: Jchi has done a real-world test with FIFA. They confirmed things like the 2X lifespan and that the artificial blades of grass keep their shape and flexibility longer. The company has made other tests, notably with Hyundai Construction and the LG Science Park (a great place we have visited in the past).

50% of the turf market is located in the USA, so it makes sense that Jchi is looking for global partners to address that market. It’s a big reason why they will attend CES 2024.

The turf is a great illustration of what JChi’s photocatalyst can do, but it’s up to various industries who buy their products to decide how to use it. Many materials exposed to strong sunlight could benefit from it, like tennis flooring, playgrounds, exterior surfaces, etc.

Most of their business comes from B2B exchanges, and if things work out as planned they would like to go IPO by 2027.
