<gallery#1>French journalist Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr once stated 'plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose', or 'the more it changes, the more it stays the same'. This very much applies to the annual Retromobile show in Paris; subtle tweaks are made every year but it nevertheless retains the same atmosphere and remains one of the must-visit events of the year. In 2011 we saw one of the more substantial changes when the length of the event was cut from ten to five days. Especially popular with exhibitors, this has resulted in increased demand for floor space, so for this year the show was moved to halls 3 and 2.2 of the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre. Once inside, however, it felt like nothing had changed compared to last year. In addition to the familiar exhibitors, the 2012 Retromobile hosted a selection of cars from the Mullin Automotive Museum, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari 250 GTO and had displays for amphibious cars and French one-off sports cars. Two auctions were also held in Paris during the same wee ...

This has very much been a response of the market as demand for racing cars and parts has diminished at the same rate as customising road cars has gained popularity. As a result mainstream manufacturers have all but walked away, yielding ever more floor space to tuners and suppliers of all sorts of aftermarket parts. In an attempt to continue to give the show a broad appeal, the organisers each year do try to retain a motor sport focus. The 2011 edition of what started life as the 'Jochen Rindt Show' was certainly no exception. This year's themes included the 100th anniversaries of the Monte Carlo Rally and the Indy 500, and the next generation DTM cars that will hit the track in 2012. For actual debuts the show did have to rely on the strong German tuning fraternity that always pulls out all the stops in Essen. As always we ventured to the Messe Essen to discover what wonders were on display and the highlights have made it into our <link#1>110-sho ...

<gallery#1>For the second year Peter Auto organised the 'Dix Mille Tours' (Ten Thousand Laps) historic race meeting at the ultra modern Paul Ricard circuit. This seems contradictory but with its large tarmac run-offs, the 'High Tech Test Track' actually allows participants to drive their cars on the limit with far less risk of damage than on classic tracks. Since last year's inaugural event, Peter Auto has also held similar races at Navarra (Dix Mille Tours) and Spa Francorchamps (Spa Classic) this spring. Set fixtures of these meetings are the Classic Endurance Racing (CER) races, the Trofeo Nastro Rosso and the Sixties' Endurance race. This weekend the schedule was completed by rounds for the Group C Championship and the Challenge Asave. What all these have in common is the emphasis on endurance with races lasting at least 45 minutes. Several clubs were invited to the paddocks and allowed on the track during the lunch breaks and at the end of each of the three days. The event also featured the dynamic debut of the McLaren MP4-12C in France ...

<gallery#1>The annual Goodwood Revival is without a doubt the world's largest stage show; invited to dress up in contemporary outfit the spectators themselves are also part of the cast and decor. Despite the huge popularity of the event, host Lord March and his excellent team each year try to add new elements to keep things fresh even for the most seasoned visitors. One of the most recent additions is the period 'high street' with a Tesco's supermarket stocked with food and drinks in very correct 1960s packaging. As always the familiar program was supplemented by several anniversary displays and races. Among the celebrations were the 75th anniversary of the Spitfire and 100 years of Ford of Britain. There was also a two-driver race exclusively for Jaguar E-Type's marking the 50th anniversary of the iconic model. Breaking with tradition, the Revival honoured a driver that is no longer with us; Juan Manual Fangio. Not that a reason is needed to pay tribute to one of the greatest drivers ever but 'Il Maestro' would have been 100 years old in 20 ...

<gallery#1>For the second year, Silverstone hosted a joint race for the Le Mans Series (LMS) and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC); the fourth and fifth rounds of the season respectively. This was also the final occasion as the two series will split from 2012 onwards with the ILMC morphing into the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Silverstone itself has also undergone a metamorphosis with substantial changes to the track and the facilities. During last year's race the new track was already used and now we were also treated to the cutting edge 'Wing' pit building. The facilities themselves are a major improvement but due to space restraints, parking and support paddocks are still at the old location. This makes for all sorts of logistics problems, especially for those competing in the support events, who had to move all their equipment halfway across the track for each session. The work has not been completed yet, so hopefully a solution will be found. A more subtle change was the switch from a 1000-km to a 6-hour race to make li ...

<gallery#1>The annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is traditionally the final and most important event of a week packed with classic car events on the Monterey Peninsula. The 61st edition had an entry of 227 cars and motorcycles divided in both the familiar classes as well as several special classes to celebrate this year's featured themes. Among them were the centenary of Stutz, 125 Years of the Automobile and the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari 250 GTO. In addition the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance also honoured John Surtees, the only world champion on two and four wheels, by inviting one of his old MV Agusta motorcycles and the Ferrari 158 F1 he used to win the 1964 F1 crown. Complementing the classic cars and motorcycles were a selection of the latest prototype and production cars that were displayed in front of the Pebble Beach Lodge on the 'Concept Car Lawn.' Included were several world debuts like the Cadillac Ciel and the SSC Tuatara.
<gallery#1>In 2011, the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was once again the racing hub of the annual Monterey Classic Car Week with around 550 historic racing cars, spread over 17 classes, taking to the undulating track during the four-day Rolex Monterey Monterey Motorsports Reunion. As has become a popular tradition, the action actually kicked off a weekend earlier with the 'Pre-Reunion', which already saw a considerable number of the Reunion's cars competing. This year's featured marque was Jaguar with a special focus on the E-Type, which was introduced 50 years ago. As part of these celebrations, the legendary American Jaguar privateer Bob Tullius was also honoured. In conjunction with the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the Motorsports Reunion also marked the 50th anniversary of the start of the development of the Ferrari 250 GTO.
Among the 17 classes were all the crowd favourites, like 1970s Formula 1, Can-Am, IMSA GTP / Group C and Trans-Am. They were spread in two groups, with nine racing on Saturday and eight on Sunday. <gallery#1>Each August, the Monterey Peninsula is the hub of the global classic car community. What began as the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance has steadily grown out as a full week of events, many of which alone are worth the visit. The first expansion to the program were the historic races on the nearby Laguna Seca track, followed in more recent years by a plethora of shows and auctions. Today these auctions tend to grab as many headlines as the events themselves as the big companies go out of their way to consign the most valuable machines. This year there are several cars lined up that might just break the $12 million record of the most valuable car ever sold at auction. For a more detailed look at what is planned for this year's Monterey Classic Car Week we have compiled the following concise preview.
Our reporters will be covering all the events and auctions humanly possible for the eighth year running.
