A week ago today, Twin Shadow released his new single "Five Seconds" (which is awesome btw) and now we get tour dates. We're super excited as always that Austin is on the schedule! New Passion Pit | "Take a Walk" [Stream] + 2012 Summer Tour Dates

It's been far too long since we've heard anything new from Passion Pit. Well scratch that. Towards the end of July the five-piece will release their sophomore effort entitled Gossamer. The first single "Take a Walk" puts the lyrics in a more noticeable role in the mix, but still manages to sound just as catchy as everything else they've recorded.

The second video is from an intimate show filmed during 2006 in NYC at Hiro Ballroom. The show was called "Gimme Shelter" and was put on by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Rational Animal (www.rational-animal.org). I really admire the trio for their integrity and how they always stood up for great causes. We need more people like them in the world. (via)

Beastie Boys Perform "The New Style" on the "Chappelle Show" Back in 2004 [Video]

Just yesterday comedian and co-creator of the "Chappelle Show" Neal Brennan paid tribute to the passing of MCA by sharing an unreleased Beastie Boys musical performance of "The New Style" for the aborted 3rd season of the show in late fall 2004. It was on a boat in East River, NYC. I love the fact that you can tell Dave Chappelle is genuinely having an awesome time. (via)

Beastie Boys Founding Member Adam "MCA" Yauch, Dead at 47

Adam Yauch, better known to music fans as MCA of the legendary hip hop triumvirate Beastie Boys, passed away today at the age of 47 following a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Obit via Nasty Little Man:

It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Yauch taught himself to play bass in high school, forming a band for his 17th birthday party that would later become known the world over as Beastie Boys.

With fellow members Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Adrock” Horovitz, Beastie Boys would go on to sell over 40 million records, release four #1 albums–including the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200, the band’s 1986 debut full length, Licensed To Ill–win three Grammys, and the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award. Last month Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Diamond and Horovitz reading an acceptance speech on behalf of Yauch, who was unable to attend.

In addition to his hand in creating such historic Beastie Boys albums as Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty and more, Yauch was a founder of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and activism regarding the injustices perpetrated on native Tibetans by Chinese occupational government and military forces. In 1996, Milarepa produced the first Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which was attended by 100,000 people, making it the biggest benefit concert on U.S. soil since 1985’s Live Aid. The Tibetan Freedom Concert series would continue to stage some of the most significant benefit shows in the world for nearly a decade following in New York City, Washington DC, Tokyo, Sydney, Amsterdam, Taipei and other cities.

In the wake of September 11, 2001, Milarepa organized New Yorkers Against Violence, a benefit headlined by Beastie Boys at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, with net proceeds disbursed to the New York Women’s Foundation Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA) September 11th Fund for New Americans–each chosen for their efforts on behalf of 9/11 victims least likely to receive help from other sources.

Under the alias of Nathanial Hörnblowér, Yauch directed iconic Beastie Boys videos including ”So Whatcha Want,” ”Intergalactic,” “Body Movin” and “Ch-Check It Out.” Under his own name, Yauch directed last year’s Fight For Your Right Revisited, an extended video for “Make Some Noise” from Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, starring Elijah Wood, Danny McBride and Seth Rogen as the 1986 Beastie Boys, making their way through a half hour of cameo-studded misadventures before squaring off against Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as Beastie Boys of the future.

Yauch’s passion and talent for filmmaking led to his founding of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which in 2008 released his directorial film debut, the basketball documentary Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot and has since become a major force in independent video distribution, amassing a catalogue of such acclaimed titles as Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy, Oren Moverman’s The Messenger, Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop, Lance Bangs and Spike Jonze’s Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait Of Maurice Sendak, and many more.

Yauch is survived by his wife Dechen and his daughter Tenzin Losel, as well as his parents Frances and Noel Yauch.

KTSW 89.9 Presents MR Fest 2012 | April 26th - 28th

Being a Texas State student I feel obligated to write about MR Fest. The lineup also has some solid bands (more on that in a sec) and my friend Kaitlyn interns at KTSW, so there's that too.

While I was walking around the Quad the other day on my way to class, a girl passed me a flyer informing of the San Marcos music/comedy festival. This year will mark the 5th incarnation of MR Fest, a three day event sponsored by Texas State radio station KTSW 89.9 and features over 100 artists in 13 different locations around San Marcos (it's really not that far my fellow Austinites).

First things first, it's going on April 26th-28th (which means it starts tomorrow). It's also absolutely FREE! A few standouts on the lineup include: The White White Lights, White Denim, Equals, Black Books, The Great Nostalgic, Black Pistol Fire, Wild Child, Stereo Is A Lie, Marmalakes, Quiet Company, and The Sour Notes. Pachanga Fest 2012 | Full Line Up, Set Times and Ticket Giveaway

We announced the initial 2012 Pachanga Music Festival line up a few weeks ago and after weeks of waiting we are happy to announce the full line up is today along with set times for both days. The festival will once again be held at Fiesta Gardens in Austin, TX on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12.

Saturday will feature International, national and local favorites Los Lonely Boys, Chico Trujillos, Ana Tijoux, Alejandro Escovedo, Forro in the Dark, Ruben Ramos and The Mexican Revolution, La Santa Cecilia, Girl In A Coma, and Ultra8201 favorites Politics will be making their first ever festival appearance while 19-time Latin Grammy and double Grammy winners Calle 13 (video above) will perform for the first time in Austin as headliners for the inaugural Friday night show.

Set Times

“Pachanga Ganga” two-day ticket packages are available now for $45 ($60 day of show) and include entrance to both Calle 13 on Friday night and the fiesta all day Saturday. “Pachanga Ganga” single Friday night Calle 13 tickets are $33 ($43 day of show) and single day Saturday tickets are $15 ($25 day of show) through April 19. VIP tickets are available Saturday ONLY and are $45 for the early bird ($65 day of show) and include air conditioning, indoor restrooms, limited complimentary alcoholic beverages and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages as well as tastings from Austin’s favorite Latina restaurants including Takoba and Papitino’s.

Ultra8201 will be giving away TWO sets of passes to the festival over the next few weeks. Just fill out the entry form for a chance to win.

Clusterfest 2012

So we're sorry about the late notice and all, but if you don't have any plans tonight and need something fun to do there's a festival going on in Georgetown today starting at 5:30pm. The 2nd annual Clusterfest lineup is headlined by Sleigh Bells and will also feature performances by Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Future Islands, and more. Tickets are only $25 and can be purchased online until 2pm this afternoon. After that you can purchase them at the door, cash only.

A few more details on the fest:
-Doors open @ 5pm, with the music starting @ 5:30pm
-There will be three stages (black, white, and green stages)

Julian Plenti Lives... Paul Banks of Interpol Announces New EP

Earlier today, Matador Records tweeted details about a follow up solo EP from Paul Banks of Interpol. Then 5-song EP will be entitled Julian Plenti Lives... and be released on June 12th, in advance of a full-length Paul Banks LP due this fall. The EP will be released digitally, and also numbered and limited to 2300 vinyl and 1500 CD copies worldwide. It'll be composed of three covers - songs by J Dilla, Frank Sinatra, and Harold Faltermeyer (composer of the soundtrack to "The Running Man"), in addition to an instrumental track and an original song.
