Hoje, ao ler as notícias do Japão, encontrei uma história muito interessante. Sobre Kikujiro Fukushima, fotógrafo que fez imagens de Hiroshima após a bomba e agora, na província de Fukushima atingida pela crise nuclear, fez o que pode ter sido seu último trabalho.

Today, when I was reading the news from Japan, I found a very interesting story. It is about Kikujiro Fukushima, a photographer who took pictures of Hiroshima after the bombing and now, at Fukushima prefecture stricken by the nuclear crisis, made what can be his final job.

Em 1945, Kikujiro trabalhava em uma unidade militar em Hiroshima. Pouco antes do ataque atômico, a unidade saiu. Um ano depois, ele voltou a Hiroshima. Em 1961, publicou um livro de fotografias mostrando o sofrimento das vítimas.

In 1945, Kikujiro worked in a military unit in Hiroshima. Shortly before the atomic attack, the unit left the prefecture. One year later, he went back to Hiroshima. In 1961, he published a book of photos showing the suffering of the victims.

Aos 90 anos e com o corpo de 37 quilos enfraquecido pelo câncer, Kikujiro foi até a província de Fukushima. Em um de seus livros, ele escreveu: "usinas nucleares e armas nucleares são sinônimos. Se um acidente acontece, os danos podem ser equivalente a uma guerra nuclear". "Senti que tinha que ver por mim mesmo o que aconteceu em Fukushima".

At the age of 90 and with the 37 kg body weakened by cancer, Kikujiro went to Fukushima prefecture. In one of his books, he wrote: "Nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons are synonyms. If an accident occurs, damage could arise that would be the equivalent of nuclear war". "I felt I had to see for myself what happened in Fukushima".

Recentemente, aconteceu a Tokyo Motor Show 2011. Entre tantos carros compactos, elétricos ou híbridos, o presidente da Toyota, Akio Toyoda, disse uma coisa interessante: “Não penso que seja uma questão de se os carros do amanhã serão elétricos ou híbridos. Os consumidores decidirão do que precisam, e não acredito que haverá apenas uma opção. A propósito, eu adoro o cheiro de gasolina e o som dos motores, então espero que esse tipo de veículo nunca desapareça”.

Recently, there was the Tokyo Motor Show 2011. Among many compact, electric or hybrid vehicles, president of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, made an interesting statement: "I don't think it's a question of whether tomorrow's cars will be EVs or plug-in hybrids. Customers will decide what they need, and I don't think there'll be just one option. Uma vez li que, desde os tempos antigos, os japoneses gostavam de registrar paisagens que viam durante viagens; daí, surgiu o ukiyo-e. As câmeras modernas são uma evolução.

I've read that, since ancient times, Japanese liked to record landscapes seen during trips; hence, ukiyo-e was created. I think modern cameras are just an evolution.

Creio que, no Japão, já deve estar começando o outono, já que no Brasil começou a primavera.

O outono foi a estação que mais aproveitei no Japão. Na verdade, foi uma das melhores épocas de todos os tempos. Foi quando passou o calorão, e a perspectiva da chegada do inverno me animava a cada dia.

Autumn was the season I'd enjoyed the most in Japan. Actually, it was one of the best times ever. It was when the heat was over, and the approach of winter cheered me up day after day.

Quando o outono chegou, comprei uns três coletes, assim, comecei a passar apenas as mangas das camisas para ir à editora. Salvou horas preciosas da minha vida.

It may have been the best participation of Samurai Blue in World Cups, since the debut in France-98. The team had a fierce style, with wider play skills and, incredible, an attack that really caused opposing defenses to work.

Golgo 13 é um mangá criado por Takao Saito, publicado no Japão desde 1969. O personagem principal é Duke Togo, um assassino de aluguel, cuja idade e nacionalidade são desconhecidas. Seu codinome vem de Gólgota, o monte onde Jesus Cristo foi crucificado.

Golgo 13 is a manga created by Takao Saito, running in Japan since 1969. The main character is Duke Togo, whose age and nationality are unknown. His codename comes from Golgotha, the mount where Jesus Christ was crucified.

Um aspecto interessante é que Golgo 13 mistura acontecimentos reais com a ficção, com a maioria dos temas incluindo alguma teoria da conspiração. O assassino encontra, por exemplo, com Nelson Mandela e com o papa João Paulo II.

It is interesting that Golgo 13 mixes historical facts to fiction; most of the stories includes some sort of conspiracy theory. The hitman encounters, for example, Nelson Mandela and Pope John Paul II.

Pelo menos até onde li, o personagem Duke Togo é, em termos literários, fraco. Ele é temido por todos, nunca erra, sempre fala o que deve ser falado na hora certa. De certa forma, ele lembra James Bond, mas sem piadas. Os ambientes e os personagens em torno dele é que, de fato, fazem as coisas ficarem interessantes. Em algumas histórias, a participação do "Mr. Togo" limita-se a algumas poucas páginas.
As far as I've read, the character Duke Togo is, under literary aspects, weak. He is feared by many, never makes a mistake, always talk what is necessary in the right time. In some ways, he recalls James Bond, but with no jokes. The backgrounds and the characters around him is what make things interesting. In some stories, the role of "Mr. Togo" is done in a couple of pages.

Há quatro meses, em 11 de março, um terremoto seguido de tsunami atingiu a costa nordeste do Japão. Além da destruição em si, os eventos desencadearam o problema nuclear na usina Fukushima Daiichi. Pelo que sabemos, embora muito progresso foi feito, a crise está longe de acabar.
Four months ago, in March 11th, a earthquake followed by a tsunami struck the Japanese northeast coast. Besides the destruction itself, the events caused que nuclear situation at Fukushima Daiichi plant. As far as we know, the crisis is far from an end, despite the great progress already done.

Quando escrevi a primeira notícia sobre o terremoto, imaginei duas situações. Imaginei quando escreveria a primeira notícia sobre o início da reconstrução. Houve muitas notícias de demonstração de solidariedade pelo mundo, mas a primeira notícia que realmente me animou veio no dia 31 de março, com o retorno do funcionamento (parcial) do trem-bala no norte do Japão. Espero poder escrever, o mais rápido possível, alguma notícia (ou post de blog) cujo título seria algo mais ou menos assim: "Inaugurado memorial no local onde havia a usina Fukushima Daiichi".
When I wrote the first news concerning the quake, I imagined two situations. I imagined when I would write the first news about the reconstruction. There were many about the demonstration of solidarity around the world, but the first one that cheered me up was the one about the resume (partially) of bullet train service in north Japan. I hope I can write soon some news (or a blog post) whose title will be something like this: "Memorial opened at former Fukushima Daiichi site".

Depois do terremoto e tsunami que atingiram o Japão em 11 de março, houve muitas manifestações de solidariedade no mundo inteiro.

After the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 11th, there were many displays of support around the world.

Alguns dias atrás, li um texto no site do Asahi Shinbun, em que alguns designers questionam o uso da Hinomaru (a bandeira japonesa), mesmo que a intenção tenha sido boa.

Some days ago, I read a text at Asahi Shinbun website about some designers protesting against the use of the Hinomaru (the Japanese flag), even though with goodwill.

Pessoalmente, não gosto quando mostram o círculo vermelho estilhaçado, como na capa do livro #quakebook, assim como achei de mau gosto algumas ilustrações que relacionaram o tsunami à obra "A Grande Onda de Kanagawa", de Hokusai. Porém, é questão de interpretação de cada um.

Particularly, I don't like seeing the red circle shattered, like in the cover of #quakebook, just like I find it was a bad idea some artworks that portraited the tsunami using Hokusai's "The Great Wave of Kanagawa" as base. Still, it is a matter of personal interpretation.

A gente faz piada etc, mas foi legal o Corinthians ter colocado uma bandeira do Japão na camisa em um jogo, além de escrever フォルサ・ジャパン e o nome dos jogadores em katakana. O time do Vasco da Gama também teve iniciativa parecida.

We make jokes, but it was nice that Corinthians (a Brazilian local soccer team) put a Japanese flag in its uniform in a match, besides writing フォルサ・ジャパン and the player's name in katakana. Vasco da Gama (a soccer team from Rio de Janeiro), had similar action.

Na Fórmula 1, houve muitas mensagens estampadas nos carros e capacetes. As primeiras a terem uma iniciativa nesse sentido foram a Sauber, claro, e a Ferrari. Porém, chama a atenção que o inglês Jenson Button, da McLaren, mantém a mensagem 頑張れ日本 (força, Japão) até o momento. Também, ele tem um bom motivo para gostar tanto assim do Japão...
In Formula 1, there were many messages printed on the cars and helmets. The first ones to show an initiative were Sauber, naturally, and Ferrari. O terremoto e suas consequências ainda são o principal assunto quando se fala no Japão e provavelmente continuará assim pelos próximos meses e até anos. Quando comecei a escrever sobre o assunto, imaginei o dia em que começaria a escrever sobre a recuperação.
The earthquake and the aftermath still are the main subject when it comes to Japan and probably will be for the forthcoming months and even years. When I started to write about it, I imagined the day when I would start to write about the recovery.

A Nissan tem divulgado muitos vídeos sobre o retorno da produção em suas fábricas, especialmente a fábrica de Iwaki, na província de Fukushima. Na manhã do dia 20 de abril, quarta-feira, a fábrica voltou a produzir motores. Nissan has been releasing videos about the restart process at its factories, specially the Iwaki plant, in Fukushima prefecture. At the mourning of April 20th, Wednesday, the plant resume the production of engines. "The world's customers are waiting for engines made in Iwaki", said Hidetoshi Shimizu, vice-president of production and chain supply.

Apesar de ser de 2008, só assisti a A Partida na semana passada. Não apenas é um dos melhores filmes japoneses que já vi, mas também é um dos melhores filmes que já vi. Tem um enredo diferente, muito bem desenvolvido, com comédia e drama em raro equilíbrio.
Despite being a 2008 movie, I only watched Departures last week. It not juts one of the best Japanese movies I've ever seen, but also one of the best movies I've ever seen. It has a different plot, very well developed, with drama and comedy in a rare balance.

Daigo Kobayashi é um músico, um violoncelista. Quando sua orquestra é encerrada, ele decide voltar à sua terra natal, a província de Yamagata, no norte do Japão. Precisando de um novo emprego, ele acaba aceitando trabalhar em uma empresa do ramo funerário. A tarefa consiste, basicamente, em limpar, maquiar e vestir o cadáver, de acordo com rituais budistas, para que o corpo siga para a cremação.
Daigo Kobayashi is a musician, a cellist. When his orchestra was disbanded, he decides to go back to his hometown in Yamagata prefecture, north of Japan. In the search for a new job, he ends up accepting to work at a company on the funeral business. The task consists, basically, on cleaning, doing the make up and dressing the corpse, according to Buddhist rituals, so that it goes on to cremation.

No Japão, trabalhos que pressupunham o contato com seres mortos eram algo de preconceito. Assim, curtidores de couro e açougueiros, por exemplo, formavam o grupo dos burakumin. O Museu dos Direitos Humanos, em Osaka, tem uma seção dedicada aos burakumin, e também trata da discriminação baseadas em doenças (como a hanseníase) e em origens, como os povos de Ryukyu e Ainu.
In Japan, jobs that deal with dead beings used to suffer prejudice. So, tanners and butchers, for example, composed the burakumin group. Human Rights Museum, in Osaka, has a section dedicated to burakumin, and others about prejudice based on diseases (like leprosy) and on origins, such as Ryukyu and Ainu people.

O tsunami de 11 de março provocou a morte de muitas pessoas no Japão (já na casa de 10 mil). Em razão desse número elevado e da necessidade de economizar combustível (que seria usado nos fornos) os mortos estão sendo enterrados, contrariando o costume japonês.
March 11th tsunami caused the death of many people in Japan (already reached 10 thousand). Because of this high number and the need to save combustible (which would be used in the furnaces) the dead are being buried, what do not match Japanese tradition.

A direção é de Yojiro Takita, com roteiro de Kundo Koyama. Nos papéis principais, Masahiro Motoki, Ryoko Hirosue e Tsutomu Yamazaki. Motoki realmente aprendeu a tocar violoncelo e a fazer os rituais da cerimônia de preparação do cadáver.

Com toda essa correria, só agora pensei em colocá-los no blog. O lado positivo é que a situação aparentemente está se acalmando. De qualquer forma, é interessante acompanhar a transmissão.

I guess it is a bit too late (which is not exactly a bad thing) to insert theses NHK World links to watch the news from Japan. Since I've been very busy recently, it did not occur to me to publish the links here. Good thing the situation is aparently becoming normal in Japan. Os últimos dias têm sido muito corridos. Fazer a cobertura da Crise no Japão depois do terremoto e tsunami do dia 11 de março, e ainda com o problema da usina nuclear de Fukushima, tem sido muito estressante. Às vezes, parece um pesadelo que tanto sofrimento esteja acontecendo no Japão. Por outro lado, eu realmente acredito que o país vai superar mais essa dificuldade, como já o fez outras vezes em sua história. Não é que eu esteja achando ruim de cobrir, mas às vezes preciso prestar atenção para não me envolver demais.

The last few days have been very busy. Do the news coverage of the Crisis in Japan after the earthquake and the tsunami in March 11, and the issue of Fukushima nuclear power plant, have been quite stressful. Sometimes it looks like a nightmare, that so many suffering is happening in Japan. Still, I really believe that the nation will overcome this situation, as it had already done other times in its history. It is not that is is a pain to do the coverage, it's that sometimes I have to be careful not to get envolved too much.

Hoje, entre as notícias, ouvi uma música que foi uma espécie de oásis mental. Estava conversando com Robert Regonati, produtor musical brasileiro que vive no Japão, na província de Ishikawa. Ele mandou um link com um vídeo da cantora Tsubasa, que fez shows no Brasil. Eu queria muito ter ido aos shows dela, mas não pude.
Today, among the news, I heard a song that turned out to be sort of a mental oasis. I was talking to Robert Regonati, Brazilian musical producer who lives in Japan, in Ishikawa Prefecture. He sent me a link to a video from Japanese singer Tsubasa, who had performed shows in Brazil. I really wanted to go to her shows by that time, but I couldn't.

Japan is a country that requires to be enjoyed also by the details. All the places are full of subtleties and meanings for us to discover.

Em alguns dias, eu saía para andar de bicicleta. Então deitava sobre as ruínas do Palácio Imperial de Nara para olhar o céu e ouvir o barulho do vento do inverno. Depois, andava sem rumo até me perder. Queria poder lembrar de todas as casas, as ruas estreitas, as pessoas andando e cuidando de seus afazeres.

In some days, I used to go out for a bicycle ride. Then, I laid down on the remains of Nara Imperial Palace just to look at the blue sky and listen to the winter wind. Depois, ride with no destiny in mind until I get totally lost. I wish I could remember about all the houses, the narrow streets, people walking and taking care of their own business.

Uma das razões por que gosto tanto de trens é que, para mim, eles indicam que tudo no Japão está bem. Depois da Segunda Guerra, o Shinkansen foi um dos símbolos da recuperação japonesa. Ontem, menos de uma semana depois da estreia do Hayabusa, o Japão sofreu um dos seus piores terremotos.

One of the reasons why I like Japanese trains so much is that, for me, they tell us that everything is fine. After Second World War, the Shinkansen was one of the symbols of Japanese recovery. Yesterday, after less than one week from Hayabusa debut, Japan suffered one of the worst earthquakes of its History.

Os trens requerem grande organização e cuidadoso planejamento dos locais onde os trilhos serão colocados. É incrível que um país tão pequeno como o Japão tenha ferrovias tão desenvolvidas, até mesmo as de alta velocidade. Creio que os trens são um símbolo da resistência do Japão, que mesmo se algo quebrar seu caminho, logo eles estarão correndo novamente. Enquanto os trens estiverem correndo, tudo estará bem.

Trains require great organization and careful planning of the places where tracks will be placed. It is quite amazing that Japan, a so narrow land, has so developed railways, even high speed ones. So, I think trains is a great symbol of Japan strength, that even if something disrupts their way, soon they will run again. While trains are running, everything will be fine.

É comum ver pessoas no Japão tirando fotos dos trens. Soube que há até hotéis especializados nesse segmento, que oferecem quartos com vista para a linha do trem, para atender os aficionados.

In Japan, it is a regular thing that people take photos of the trains. I heard that there are hotels that rent rooms with view to railtracks, specially for those who like to watch them passing.

Há muito tempo que gostaria de escrever sobre esta música, que é uma das minhas favoritas. "Forever We Will Be" é da pianista japonesa Anan Ryoko, com vocais do rapper coreano-americano Kero One.

Since a long time ago I wanted to write about this song, which is one of my favorites. "Forever We Will Be" is from Japanese pianist Anan Ryoko, featuring Korean-American rapper Kero One.

A música está no álbum Another Beginning (2010), lançado pelo selo P-Vine. Curioso é que, nos comentários do vídeo acima, falou-se que a batida lembra Nujabes. Embora não concorde, seria muito legal se houvesse um remix pelo grande DJ japonês, já falecido. Acredito que o próprio Kero One contribuiu na produção da faixa.
The song is in Another Beginning album (2010), released by P-Vine label. Interesting that, on the comments for the above video in YouTube, some said that it remembers Nujabes beat. I do not agree, but it would be really cool if there was a remix by the late and great DJ. I believe Kero One himself contributed in the production of the track.

As máquinas de venda fazem parte do cotidiano do Japão, quer gostemos ou não. Ao mesmo tempo em que são realmente práticas, recebem críticas principalmente pelo gasto de energia. Soube que já há medidas nesse sentido, como a retirada de algumas unidades e a instalação de sensores que ligam as luzes da máquina quando alguém se aproxima.

Vending machines are part of Japan's daily life, whether we like it or not. While really useful, they also are accused specially for wasting electricity. I heard that there already are measures to balance this situation, such as taking out some from the streets and the instalation of sensors that turn on the lights only when someone approaches the machine.

Sou um grande entusiasta das máquinas de venda. De fato, é meio viciante até. Quando conheço alguém que vai ao Japão pela primeira vez, costumo dar-lhe algumas moedas para que experimente alguma bebida da máquinas. Os preços variam, em geral, entre ¥ 100 e 200 (cerca de R$ 2 a 4, aproximadamente).As latinhas são muito legais, de 190 mL – na medida certa.

I am a huge enthusiast of vending machines. Actually, it is quite addictive. When I know someone who is going to Japan for the first time, I usually give her some coins in order thar she can try some drink from the machine. Prices generally are about ¥ 100/200 (about US$ 1 to 2). The cans are really cool, of 190 mL – the perfect shot.

Nas fotos deste texto, estão (apenas) duas latinhas que comprei e outra que ganhei alguns anos atrás. Sem dúvida, café é a minha favorita. Aliás, no Japão, toma-se café gelado – que é muito bom também.
About the photos in this post, there are (only) two cans I brought and another that I was given some years ago. Undoubtedly, coffee is my favourite. Indeed, in Japan, coffee may also be enjoyed cold – it tastes great.

A proposta do Japão para sediar a Copa do Mundo de Futebol de 2022 não foi aceita – quem levou foi o Qatar. A ideia japonesa consistia, basicamente, em estender a experiência de assistir ao jogo no país-sede para estádios ao redor do mundo pelo uso de hologramas e potentes sistemas de som. Outra inovação seria nos estádios locais, em que os visitantes usariam aparelhos comunicadores universais, tanto para leitura como para conversação entre pessoas de todos os países.

Japanese idea consisted, basically, to extend the experience of watching a game in the host country to stadiums around the world by using hologram technology and powerful sound systems. Uma das coisas mais legais do Japão é o trem-bala, o Shinkansen. Inaugurado oficialmente em 1964, foi um dos símbolos da recuperação japonesa no pós-guerra. Planejado desde os anos 30, o projeto foi interrompido pelas guerras, ficando pronto para as Olimpíadas de Tokyo.

One of the coolest things of Japan is the bullet-train, the Shinkansen. Operations began officially in 1964, which was one of the symbols of Japanese recovery after World War II. Planned since the 30's, the project was interrupted due to wars, but was completed right at the time of Tokyo Olympics.

Creio que os japoneses gostam muito de trens, especialmente, do Shinkansen. É muito comum ver as pessoas tirando fotos com ele, desde crianças e bebês até adultos. Além de rápido, prático e confortável, o trem-bala é esteticamente muito bonito também.

I think Japanese people really like trains, specially the Shinkansen. It is very usual to see people taking pictures with it, since children and babies until adults. Besides being fast, useful and comfortable, bullet-train is aesthetically awesome.

Na minha opinião, o Shinkansen é o melhor meio de transporte que existe. Pode não ser o mais rápido do mundo atualmente, mas se considerarmos a importância e o esforço colocado na construção e manutenção de ferrovias em um lugar onde terremotos são uma preocupação constante, fica fácil entender o alto conceito que o Shinkansen tem.
For me, the Shinkansen is the best mode of transport there is. It may not be the world's fastest nowadays, but if you consider the importance and effort on building and maintaining railways in a land where earthquakes are a constant concern, it is easy to understand the high esteem Shinkansen has.
