August has only just begun, and Umi Cafe has a whole lot of community and arts events lined up.

SUN. AUG. 8 - The jazz and folk stylings of Andrea Gauster and JJ Atrio.
MON. AUG. 9 - Learn French and/or Arabic with Roufa Thierrin.
TUES. AUG. 10 - Voices of Venus, the Women's Only Open Mic, starring Caitlyn Paxson, storyteller and harpist.
WED. AUG. 11 - Ingredients Poetry Workshop with the nationally acclaimed poetry group, the Recipe.
THURS. AUG. 12 - Resurrect Ezra Pound Fundraiser with Graeme "Loh El" O'Farrell, an Ottawa poet rockstar and recorder of community arts events.
FRI. AUG. 13 - Umi Cafe's Legendary Open Mic!
SAT. AUG. 14 - Some low-down jazzy tunes by the Ottawa/Gatineau Massie Johnson Combo.

Stay tuned for more August events that may involve the likes of Ian Keteku and other poets, a queer variety show during Capital Pride, return of Games Night, and the Maritimes folk rock of Scott Biggar!

Language classes at Umi Cafe with Roufa Therrien

The next Arabic class takes places on Monday August 2nd. The $10 session starts with a small gift - Roufa will write your name in Arabic, and you will be able to keep this small memento. Then we will also learn some of the letters used in writing your names, so that you can then write the names of your friends - great conversation starter!

Each class introduces one facet of the cultures of the Middle East. Music is the theme for this class.

Arabic class on Monday August 2, 5h30 to 6h30 pm, Umi Café. $10 ea.

Roufa also facilitates two French language workshops the same afternoon, 1-2pm, and 2-3pm. $10 each. Each sessions starts by identifying what each person would like to learn. Then Roufa facilitates either of the following approaches: conversation; reading a local francophone newspaper; role-plays. Roufa will step in to provide instruction on pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.

The main goal of these classes is to help individuals who work in the service industry and who want to practice their French so as to better relate to their francophone clients.

Roufa has 15 years of training and facilitation experience, and has taught French in Ottawa for 8 years.

North, My Love is a highly original, 7-piece orchestra. Based in Montréal, they have long been planning to completely invade Ottawa with their highly original, accordeon-based orchestral style.

What red-hot latin band do you think of when you think of Umi Café?

If the poster is not enough, think percussionist Salomon Carrillo's expertly and subtly played Carribbean rhythms, the Mexican rhythm guitar maestro Raimundo and a certain young guitar magician from El Salvador that has made jaws drop for the last two years at Umi Café.

Shaman Rhythms, now performing under their new name are basically unchanged except for new material and some years of high-profile performances under their belt.

First seen live at Umi Café in the summer of 2008, they now return from over 6 months of hiatus from Umi to bring you back to what you first felt in 2008 and more. This event has been a year in the making, and 100% of the proceeds from it will go to bring Salomon's son to Canada from El Salvador. See you there pachangueros!

Landon Coleman

Landon Coleman comes to Ottawa from Alberta via the Maritimes. His songs come from the land he treads and the different lights by which he sees. Bland latte spilled on a MEC jacket and revolution in Vancouver, BC, cold water and the romantics in Golden, BC, dirty avenues and boozy breakdowns in Edmonton, Alberta, frozen toes and metaphysics in Ottawa, ON, green and yellow eelgrass with a fistful of rings in Antigonish, NS. His folky pop tunes are alive with youth and Canada and sincerity. He has shared the stage with The Bicycles, You Say Party! We Say Die!, and Cadence Weapon.

Simon Hoskyn

Having three full-length releases under his belt and experience playing much of Canada, the US and New Zealand, Simon can rightly be called a seasoned singer/songwriter. His latest release "Sing of the Beauty, Say Nothing of the Pain" is proof of his hard-earned maturity. Lyrically, the album winds its way through themes of loss, weariness, pain and love; musically it is the meticulous and sincere work of a virtuoso guitarist and skilled vocalist. A careful listener can hear the influences of Bruce Cockburn, Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley, and Ryan Adams. In a culture where a willingness to "give it a shot" seems to be all one needs to be called a singer/songwriter, the raw talent obvious in Simon Hoskyn's work sets him above and apart.

CHEO YouthNET Fundraiser

Youthnet is a mental health promotion and intervention program run ‘by youth for youth' with full professional support through the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Services include support groups, art therapy and seasonal activities. This Umi Café fundraiser is planned to be fun and interactive.

Rimbombante - Ottawa's finest boleros

Rimbombante, a Spanish term that denotes something flamboyant or having a strong resonance, is a band dedicated to playing music in the traditon of the Bolero music recorded by the great Bolero singers of Latin America. Una Aventura Más, Rimbombante's first CD captures Rimbombante's love of bolero music. Although now Rimbombante is now playing more original compositions the bolero influence remains strong but it is being mixed in with other musical styles from Brazil and Latin America to broaden Rimbombante's creative template. Bolero performers such as Toña la Negra, Lucho Gatica, Antonio Machín, Armando Manzanero and Raul Shaw Moreno remain dear to our hearts but more and more we are playing original compositions that include such influences as Brian Wilson, Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. We are above else jazz musicians so each song is enhanced with a certain amount of improvisation. The musicians in the band have worked in a variety of jazz, experimental music and world music groups like Raivo, the Ottawa band that mixes musical styles from Madagascar, Kingdom Shore, Florquestra Brazil, Shaman Rhythms, and Caridad Cruz.

The band's first CD Una aventura más is now out.

Fundraiser for Guy Marsan's participation in OTESHA Project Bike Tours

Guy Marsan is hosting a fundraiser this Sunday from 7 to 9pm to fund his participation in the Otesha Project pancanadian Bicycle tour amounting to 2250$

Otesha is a Swahili word, which is the native language of Kenya, and means "reason to dream". This name was chosen as the project began in Kenya, and the co-founders' experience there inspired them to start Otesha.

The Otesha Project is a youth led charitable organization that mobilizes and equips Canadians to create local and global change through individual and collective choices. Our vision is to see sustainable consumption and lifestyle choices enter the mainstream of Canadian culture.

The project is founded on the idea that every individual has the power to make choices that affect that world. The idea that step by step, choice by choice, we can build a more sustainable future by building community, making conscious lifestyle choices and reducing consumption.
