 Studirao na petrogradskom Konzervatoriju, a predavao je harmoniju na Konzervatoriju u Moskvi i pisao glazbene kritike. &lt;br /&gt;
 Materijalnu neovisnost i boravak u inozemstvu omogućila mu je njegova mecenatkinja Nadežda von Meck, a njihovo dopisivanje važan je izvor podataka o stvaralačkom radu i estetskim pogledima Čajkovskoga. &lt;br /&gt;
 Nastupao je kao dirigent vlastitih djela po Rusiji, Europi i SAD-u. Javio se u ruskoj glazbi istodobno sa skladateljima Novoruske škole, tzv. grupom Petorice, a njihovo stvaralaštvo se međusobno dopunjuje.&lt;br /&gt;
  Po svom glazbenom izrazu je kasni romantičar, a prožima svoja djela ruskim duhom u melodiji i sadržaju svojih opera.&lt;br /&gt;

 Od 1835. glavni je dirigent koncerta "Gewendhaus" u Leipzigu. Tu osniva 1843. konzervatorij, a Leipzig podiže u red glavnih europskih glazbenih središta. Skladao je pet simfonija, razne koncerte, scensku glazbu, oratorije, kantate i solo pjesme.&lt;br /&gt;

 U 19.st. Koncertna uvertira je samostalno orkestralno djelo koje ima izvanglazbeni sadržaj.&lt;br /&gt;
 Zbog programnosti i jednostavačnosti, koncertne uvertire bliske su simfonijskim pjesmama, pa je ponekad među njima teško odrediti granicu.&lt;br /&gt;

 1690. Alessandro Scarlatti stvorio je talijansku uvertiru nazvanu simfonia.&lt;br /&gt;
 Uvertiru su posebno razvili u 18.st stoljeću Gluck i Mozart.&lt;br /&gt;
