It is a shame — even though the page loading time is now considerably reduced — for we wanted to avoid repeated "to next page" clicks for comfort. We'll re-design the main page consequently.

Your comments and suggestions are most welcome !

Have a great day !

Nick

*

Salutations à tous !

Quelques nouvelles...

Avant toute chose, A Japanese Book / Un livre japonais (AJB/ULJ) vient d'avoir un an !

Nicolas

Photobooks are the Photographer and the Collector's Food

Version française

I am at all times extremely surprised to find many a professional photographer own very few photobooks — if any indeed.

It is unthinkable for a painter not to to know the Titien, Cézanne, Sisley, Whistley, Sargent, Matisse, Gauguin, Klee, Klimt, Picasso, Hopper, &c., not to go and see and study their paintings in museums, nor own catalogues and monographs, which fill the lack of museums nearby or bring home distant paintings, to which they can refer for information or at which they can look for inspiration — for it is the culture of this art, and how humans function : what the eye sees, the hand remembers.

Evidently, the same goes for amateurs of fine arts : monographs and catalogues are the most convenient access to artists' productions world-wide and ambitious publishers and artists even sometimes make them into works of art in their turn.

Who would want of a culturally illiterate writer ? Has any ever succeeded ? This may be the reason why there are so many poor professionnal photographers, quality-wise.

Many a photographer nowadays thinks that all you need is a top-notch camera and some technical knowledge, such as that of lighting, &c. — for in this digital era, you don't even have to know how to develop the shots yourself. And yes, that's enough — merely to take pictures, that is. And anybody can do that.

But what makes a professional photographer a real pro and an artist, and not only someone who takes pictures — is knowledge of their art, a large photographic culture and a clear-cut taste. There is no secret. The eye is educated as it records what it sees, likes and dislikes become clearer, the eye sharper, and so does the vision of what one wants to shot, and how, to what result : pictures and photobooks are the photographer's food. The more you eat them and the more you know about them and their content, the more you know what is good or bad for you and the more you know yourself.

This specific education can only very partly be achieved in photography schools and colleges. It always is a personal study and the tools are around : exhibitions in galleries and museums, books in large libraries and bookshops. And for those who chance not or don't wish to live in big cities, there are bookstores' catalogues and online bookshops, old and new, big and small, from which they can order books unavailable in their own country. There are also a few resources on the internet, but internet is a last resort, the best choice among the worst options, although the cheapest one for sure. But then again we are talking about an investment with high profits in personal knowledge, pleasure and additional commercial value.

As a matter of fact, all of the above is also probably true for amateur photographers, photo-lovers and photography / photobook collectors : pictures and photobooks are also the amateur and collector's food and treat.

Unfortunately, there is want for reliable sources : there are now more uncultured sellers than competent booksellers — partly thanks to the rise of those large sale platforms and sites such as Ebay, Amazon, Yahoo, which dictate what can be sold, by whom and how, and wish and work for, with their users and buyers' consent, the extinction of professional local stores and intermediaries through the crooked idea that anybody can sell anything — as long as they pay their charges, that is.

Whereas, as for any professional, bookselling too, be it of new, second-hand, collectible or rare books, comes with traditions, knowledge — passed down from one generation to the next — and tools — such as a large collection of documentation and reference books, again.

To round it up, for we have already said too much, here is an excellent echo — we share it thouroughly — from a knowledgeable photography collector : A Contrarian View : A Collectors Thoughts on Photobooks.

We would be really interested in hearing what your thoughts on the subject are : pray leave a comment if you have a spare minute !

Cheers,

Nick

*

Bien cordialement,

Nicolas

Search A Japanese Book / Chercher Un livre japonais

There are several ways through which you can search on AJB.

For one thing, the whole site is much like a permanent catalogue that grows and evolves as time passes.
The upload of book reviews and descriptions is quite random. Going from one page to the other is thus an interesting way to browse through this catalogue : you never know what will come next.

There also are a few thematic reviews, which are pages dealing with specific themes, photographers or illustrators.
These can be accessed through the drop-down menu on the top of every page, through the links in the right-hand column, and in alphabetical order through the sitemap post.

Moreover, there is a search box, which can also be found in the right-hand column. Themes, author names, book titles, publishers, even dates : virtually anything can be input.

Lastly, each post is labeled with tags such as b&w / color, publication dates, names and themes. The complete list can be found at the bottom of the right-hand sidebar, and clicking on any of them will lead you to the complete list of the items thus labeled.
Another interesting thing with these topics / labels is that, when you are on a book post page, i.e. any page but the site main page, some recent related posts will be displayed at the end of the review : this is also a fun cross-field search point.

Oh, and you may also ask me directly.

I hope these search tricks and options will be helpful.

Have a great Christmas !

For if you can't get it first-hand, then there is no meaning in calling it second-hand, is there ?

Once out of print, books become old, collectible, rare, antiquarian... — whatever you may call them, depending on a number of factors, such as their rarity (rare, scarce, uncommon), their publication date (antiquarian, modern, contemporary) or the growing interest of book-collectors (sought-after, collectible), &c. Autographed signs, inscriptions or letters spice the thing a bit.

On the one hand, it may be unnecessary to call them names, but to give the rough condition of the market. On the other, it helps to deconstruct the derogatory or admirative arguments that link the value of the book to its age — in one way or the other : the older, the cheaper / the more expensive.

In addition, one can profitably browse through the ILAB / LILA's index of terms to get a better grasp of the "official" definitions. AJB also has a glossary page, although it is not completed yet !

Any thought on the matter ?

<a href="http://www.ajapanesebook.com/2009/04/harada-katsuro-nehon-nirvana-2003.html" target="_blank" title="HARADA Katsuro. I may put here too many of them, also.

Even so, the exercise is much interesting — photographs of photographs — which compensates also, luckily, the frustration of seeing our work stolen, water-marks erased, pictures re-used by a number of lazy blockheads without ethic nor respect — the seemingly naive bookseller contents himself with getting the descriptions — or the barely pubescent in serch of nude pictures...

One can always argue that one shouldn't upload what one doesn't wish to share. Still, there is a world between information sharing, and plundering indeed.

By way of unfortunate consequence, watermarks are thus sized up, shooting angles become more excentric. I consider desactivating the right-click — more inconvenients than advantages, indeed ; but again we're not at fault.

That said by-the-bye : a fine stroll and looking-around for those which are not concerned by the remark !

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.ajapanesebook.com/2009/05/midorikawa-yoichi-nihon-no-shiki-1986.html" target="_blank" title="MIDORIKAWA Yoichi.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.ajapanesebook.com/2009/03/asai-shimpei-shadow-1986.html" target="_blank" title="ASAI Shimpei.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.ajapanesebook.com/2009/03/narahara-ikko-chikakute-harukana-tabi.html" target="_blank" title="NARAHARA Ikko.

A Japanese Book / Un livre japonais (2)

Catégories et revues s'étoffent peu à peu — Les idoles japonaises et la photographie, Shinoyama Kishin, l'éditeur Tanko-shinsha, Graphic Arts Japan, & nombre à venir.
