My Review of Blackheath

Blackheath is a novel about powerful magic but more so just a story of two former friends who rediscover their friendship along the way. I feel like this story is more about relationships and how relationships they affect the lives they touch or influence. The relationship between Joel and Maggie is defiantly the focal point, but readers also get a sense of the how their relationships especially with parents have influenced their lives up until the point of the beginning of the story.

I like Joel even though his dislike for his brother’s new title or either of his parents, he still tries to do what is right and help raise his younger siblings. This caretaker role seems to fit him even if he does not realize it. Maggie on the other hand is an outgoing girl, who tries to fill the void of family with her closest friends, but still feels empty. While there is a faint hint of romance, I like the rekindling of friendship between the two characters is a valuable part of the story. I really hope to see more of their story in the future.

I really feel like Blackheath just skimmed the surface of the magic in the world, and I want to see more magic. I also want to see what Joel is capable of; because I have a feeling, he is more powerful than even he knows. Maggie also seems to have an important part in Joel’s story, and maybe readers will see just how much if there is another installment in this series.

I love the magic and mystery surrounding Blackheath, and there is a lot more to explore if the author choose to continue the story. I will have my fingers crossed hoping that happens.

WALK THE EDGE CHAPTER ONE:

THERE ARE LIES in life we accept. Whether it’s for the sake of ignorance, bliss or, in my case, survival, we all make our choices.

I choose to belong to the Reign of Terror Motorcycle Club. I choose to work for the security company associated with them. I also choose to do this while still in high school.

All of this boils down to one choice in particular—whether or not to believe my father’s version of a lie or the town’s. I chose my father’s lie. I chose the brotherhood of the club.

What I haven’t chosen? Being harassed by the man invading my front porch. He’s decked out in a pair of pressed khakis and a button-down straight from a mall window. The real question—is he here by choice or did he draw the short stick?

“As I said, son,” he continues, “I’m not here to talk to your dad. I’m here to see you.”

A hot August wind blows in from the thick woods surrounding our house, and sweat forms on the guy’s skin. He’s too cocky to be nervous, so that dumps the blame of his shiny forehead on the 110-degree heat index.

“You and I,” he adds, “we need to talk.”

My eyes flash to the detective badge hanging on the guy’s hip and then to his dark blue unmarked Chevy Caprice parked in front of my motorcycle in the gravel drive. Twenty bucks he thinks he blocked me in. Guess he underestimated I’ll ride on the grass to escape.

This guy doesn’t belong to our police force. His plates suggest he’s from Jefferson County. That’s in the northern part of Kentucky. I live in a small town where even the street hustlers and police know each other by name. This man—he’s an outsider.

I f lip through my memory for anything that would justify his presence. Yeah, I stumbled into some brawls over the summer. A few punches thrown at guys who didn’t keep their mouths sealed or keep their inflated egos on a leash, but nothing that warrants this visit.

A bead of water drips from my wet hair onto the worn gray wood of the deck and his eyes track it. I’m fresh from a shower. Jeans on. Black boots on my feet. No shirt. Hair on my head barely pushed around by a towel.

The guy checks out the tats on my chest and arms. Most of it is club designs, and it’s good for him to know who he’s dealing with. As of last spring, I officially became a member of the Reign of Terror. If he messes with one of us, he messes with us all.

“Are you going to invite me in?” he asks.

I thought the banging on the door was one of my friends showing to ride along with me to senior orientation, not a damned suit with a badge.

“You’re not in trouble,” he says, and I’m impressed he doesn’t shuff le his feet like most people do when they arrive on my doorstep. “As I said, I want to talk.”

I maintain eye contact longer than most men can manage.

Silence doesn’t bother me. There’s a ton you can learn about a person from how they deal with the absence of sound. Most can’t handle uncomfortable battles for dominance, but this guy stands strong.

Without saying a word, I walk into the house and permit the screen door to slam in his face. I cross the room, grab my cut off the table, then snatch a black Reign of Terror T-shirt off the couch. I shrug into the shirt as I step onto the porch and shut the storm door behind me.

The guy watches me intently as I slip on the black leather cut that contains the three-piece patch of the club I belong to. Because of the way I’m angled, he can get a good look at our emblem on the back: a white half skull with fire raging out of the eyes and drops of fire raining down around it. The words Reign of Terror are mounted across the top. The town’s name, Snowflake, is spelled on the bottom rocker.

He focuses on the patch that informs him I’m packing a weapon. His hand edges to the gun holstered on his belt. He’s weighing whether I’m carrying now or if I’m gun free.

I cock a hip against the railing and hitch my thumbs in the pockets of my jeans. If he’s going to talk, it would be now. He glances at the closed door, then back at me. “This is where we’re doing this?”

“I’ve got somewhere to be.” And I’m running late. “Didn’t see a warrant on you.” So by law, he can’t enter.

A grim lift of his mouth tells me he understands I won’t make any of this easy. He’s around Dad’s age, mid to late forties. He gave his name when I opened the door, but I’ll admit to not listening.

He scans the property and he has that expression like he’s trying to understand why someone would live in a house so small. The place is a vinyl box. Two bedrooms. One bath.

A living room–kitchen combo. Possibly more windows than square footage.

Dad said this was Mom’s dream. A house just big enough for us to live in. She never desired large, but she craved land. When I was younger, she used to hug me tight and explain it was more important to be free than to be rich. I sure as hell hope Mom feels free now.

An ache ripples through me, and I readjust my footing. I pray every damn day she found some peace.

“I drove a long way to see you,” he says.

Don’t care. “Could have called.”

“I did. No one answered.”

I hike one shoulder in a “you’ve got shit luck.” Dad and I aren’t the type to answer calls from strangers. Especially ones with numbers labeled Police. There are some law enforcement officers who are cool, but most of them are like everyone else— they judge a man with a cut on his back as a psychotic felon.

I don’t have time for stupidity.

“I’m here about your mother.” The asshole knows he has me when my eyes snap to his.

“She’s dead.” Like the other times I say the words, a part of me dies along with her.

This guy has green eyes and they soften like he’s apologetic. “I know. I’m sorry. I’ve received some new evidence that may help us discover what caused her death.”

Anger curls within my muscles and my jaw twitches. This overwhelming sense of insanity is what I fight daily. For years, I’ve heard the whispers from the gossips in town, felt the stares of the kids in class, and I’ve sensed the pity of the men in the Reign of Terror I claim as brothers. It’s all accumulated to a black, hissing doubt in my soul.

Suicide.

It’s what everyone in town says happened. It’s in every hushed conversation people have the moment I turn my back. It’s not just from the people I couldn’t give two shits about, but the people who I consider family.

I shove away those thoughts and focus on what my father and the club have told me—what I have chosen to believe. “My mother’s death was an accident.”

He’s shaking his head and I’m fresh out of patience. I’m not doing this. Not with him. Not with anyone. “I’m not interested.”

I push off the railing and dig out the keys to my motorcycle as I bound down the steps. The detective’s behind me. He has a slow, steady stride and it irritates me that he follows across the yard and doesn’t stop coming as I swing my leg over my bike.

“What if I told you I don’t think it was an accident,” he says.

Odds are it wasn’t. Odds are every whispered taunt in my direction is true. That my father and the club drove Mom crazy, and I wasn’t enough of a reason for her to choose life.

To drown him out, I start the engine. This guy must be as suicidal as people say Mom was, because he eases in front of my bike, assuming I won’t run him down.

“Thomas,” he says.

I twist the handle to rev the engine in warning. He raises his chin like he’s finally pissed and his eyes narrow on me. “Razor.”

I let the bike idle. If he’s going to respect me by using my road name, I’ll respect him for a few seconds. “Leave me the fuck alone.”

Damn if the man doesn’t possess balls the size of Montana. He steps closer to me and drops a bomb. “I have reason to believe your mom was murdered.”

My Review of Reign of Shadows

Reign of Shadows exceeded my expectations in every way and kept me on my toes the entire story. Danger around every corner, romance, and adventure had me loving every second of Reign of Shadows. I was seriously hooked until the last sentence, and I defiantly did not want it to end there. Luna is an exceptional heroine in this novel, even with her disadvantages she is stronger and tougher than most of the other survivors left in her world. I could not help but want to root for her in every way.

There is a bit of romance, and I love that it does not come out forced as sometimes I find other book will do just to have a romance aspect to the story. It has a natural feeling to it, and it even acts like a beacon of hope in a world of eternal darkness. With switching points-of-view, readers get to experience the story from both Luna’s perspective and Fowler’s perspective. I have always been a fan of the multiple viewpoint stories, as I think it provides a 360 view of the story and the characters. I think it is a needed feature in Reign of Shadows as these two characters both have many thoughts and secrets that only readers get to experience through the changing perspective.

The setting and world building of Reign of Shadows is perfect. It is a dark and creepy world where dark dwellers rise up from the ground every day to eat anything living and without any real sunlight, survivors of the eclipse on get one hour of peace when the dark is just bright enough to drive the dwellers back underground. The description of the dwellers were detailed enough to nearly give me nightmares after reading Reign of Shadows.

This is the first book of Sophie Jordan’s that I have had the chance to read, but I have always heard amazing things about her other books. Now I know that I have definitely been missing out, and I am setting to rectify that mistake as soon as possible. Her writing sucks you deep in the story and holds you there until the very end brings you back to reality. Only the truly best stories can offer that type of hold over a reader.

My Review of The Elementals: The Book of Prophecy

Michelle Madow has really created something that every fantasy fan will enjoy. The comparisons to Percy Jackson and Secret Circle are extremely accurate. Greek Mythology plays a large part in the storyline for our group of “Elementals” as does the use of magic. Even though this book is only the start of the group’s epic quest, it was still packed with action.

The only problem I had with the story was the love interest between Blake and Nicole. I am just not sure how to feel about Blake and I distrust his intentions simply because he will not do the right thing by Nicole or Danielle in my honest opinion. I hope we get more of the story in the next installment, and maybe get a better feel for his character.

The group seems to bond together once they receive their abilities, and work together to follow a scavenger hunt of clues to prepare them for the journey ahead of them. While they do go up against a few big bads, I have a feeling that we are looking for bigger baddies next time around as their journey is only beginning. I really like Nicole and Kat the most and hope that their friendship continues as they work through whatever the world may throw at them.

I have been a fan of Michelle Madow’s since she first released her first novel, Remembrance. I love that she branched out with a series based with a background in Greek Mythology. As Greek Mythology is a personal favorite of mine, and I hope it plays an even bigger part in Book 2, Elementals: The Blood of the Hydra.

Favorite YAAR Supporting Characters

Everyone gets to know and fall in love with the MC, or Main Character. I, however, tend to fall for supporting characters. In our group YAAR, short for Young Adult Author Rendezvous, there are several great characters to choose from, but I’d like to talk about a few of my favorites.
We’ll start with Unexpected Alpha, by Bethany Wicker (yours truly.) I’m in love with Marie, the best friend of the MC. She provides comedic relief. I may be biased because she’s based off my best friend in real life, Mariah, but her bubbliness is hard to hate. She also becomes a badass werewolf when necessary.
Next up, The Institute Series by Kayla Howarth. I’m SO IN LOVE WITH DREW! Sorry, went a little fan girl. He betrays Allira in the beginning, but fights so hard to make things right throughout the series that Kayla made it had to not fall for him. Who doesn’t love a bad guy who tries to make things right in the end?
Then, there’s Joshua’s Island by Patrick Hodges. Who doesn’t love Kelsey? Sure, she gets her own novel in Ethan’s Secret, but before that she was a supporting character. She was so hardcore, stood up to the bullies, and stood for what’s right. She helps Joshua in so many ways to develop the courage he needs to stand up for himself.
The Awaken Series, by Michelle Bryan has several intriguing characters: Finn, Po, Tater, and my favorite, Jax. He’s SO ATTRACTIVE, hold on, need to shift away from fan girl mode. He comes to Tara’s aid when you least expect it and continues to help her on her journey. His snide comments are a bonus and there’s no instant love between them, which always ruins a good story.
Dawn of the Rebellion, by Michelle Lynn is up next with Drew. Yes, another Drew. I swear it isn’t the name! Drew’s originally Gabby’s boyfriend, but when she’s taken, Dawn and Drew set out to rescue her. Their relationship blossoms slowly and you see his true character come to life, and it’s very desirable. I’m not going to spoil anything but I cried at the end… read and see why.
Lastly, there’s Rise of the Shadow Seekers, by Korey Ward. My favorite of the trio is Nelson. I loved him from the moment he was introduced. He defended Alex from the bullies, but his looks scream otherwise. He’s broad and intimidating, but doesn’t use it for his own gain. Instead, he helps Alex in his quest and quickly becomes one of his first friends. A friend that anyone would want.
There are plenty characters out there that I didn’t have enough room to give credit to, but check them out in the YAAR library and be on the lookout for those enchanting supporting characters.

Bethany Wicker resides in Louisiana and is a pediatric nurse who loves to read and write any chance she gets. Her sun conure, Apollo, green cheek conure, Rocket, and her two dogs, Jasper and Drake, usually keep her company while she writes, throwing in ideas of their own. She has a loving husband, Lucien, and an amazing family who support her passion for writing. Her inspiration comes from her friend Mariah and the support from her fellow authors from YA Author Rendezvous. My Review of Shade Me

Shade Me is the mystery novel I did not know I was wait for, and I cannot wait for more from the Nikki Kill series. Nikki Kill is unique because it is her gift of synesthesia, or curse if you ask Nikki. Her brain is crosswire to see numbers, letters, and emotions as different colors. When the popular girl at school is found beaten and unconscious, Nikki who has no real connection to her is pulled into the mystery and it seems that Peyton left behind clue only Nikki can find.

Nikki is the type of character I really love to read about, the loner girl who actually gives a damn about other people. Nikki has no reason to continue to try to find out what happened to Peyton even if she is pulled in by being the only number on Peyton’s phone but it quickly becomes a mission for her. I love that Nikki really goes above the call of duty to find out what happened and who is behind Peyton’s attack. From start to finish, Shade Me had me enthralled and the uniqueness of Nikki’s “gift” really added to the enjoyment of the story. It became much more than just a standard young adult mystery novel.

I loved Nikki and while Peyton’s mystery is pretty much conclude by the end of Shade Me, there is a few new questions that pop up that have me dying of curiosity for the next Nikki Kill story. Also can I just say I love the name Nikki Kill, it sounds like she should be a spy or assassin. Girl can hold her own in a fight so maybe I am not far off from future book storylines (just kidding).

The writing and descriptions that Jennifer Brown uses for Nikki’s synesthesia makes me feel like I am seeing it myself. From Nikki’s personality and her kick ass and will not take no attitude, I loved every second of Shade Me. Of course there were times I was yelling in my head at her, but then again I do when I read a really great book that has my completely captivated.

My Review of The Cave

The Cave and The Wind Cave series just became one of my new favorite series so far this year. The fight for survival inside the cave is intense as the group has to navigate the underground trails and passageways and ration food in the hopes to survive until it is safe to return to the surface. The relationships that are formed and tested through the story is what makes this novel.

When the group first goes into the Wind Cave, they are not all friends in fact half of them really do not even know each other. As with any group that has to stick together in dire circumstances, they quickly begin to bond as each of them rely on each other. I like the relationships and friendships that form out of the group as they try to hike through the cave to get supplies and stay away from the toxic surface air until it is safe to return. It is not an easy journey and with most of the group having no climbing or caving experience, the simplest of paths can turn deadly if they are not careful.

I will say that I am not a usual fan of the love triangle, as it is overuse in novels today, but I think that the author, Michaela Montgomery, handled it very well. I only hate having to wait until the next book to see how the love triangle plays out or if Kate chooses herself over the boys. I personally would like to see her choose herself and if either of the love interest really cares, I think they will follow her. Now it is just a wait and see game.

There is so much more to the story of this group left to explore and while it is mainly from Kate’s perspective, I hope that the next book gives us more insight into the other characters as the decisions of the future are now in their hands. I think that the battle for survival has really just begun and will continue throughout the series, especially with the next book Aftermath.

My Thoughts: I loved the first book, Forged in Stone! I loved James and Ainsley story and see some of my favorite characters from Alyssa's Afterglow Trilogy. The best part is that you do not have to read the Afterglow Trilogy to enjoy the Forged Chronicles but for fans they get to see some of their favorites all grown up. The end of Forged in Stone has me dying to read Forged in Ice and the cover is just phenomenal.

My Review of Floor 21

Floor 21 is really unlike anything I have read in the past from the way the narrative is written to the plotline of the story itself. I will admit that reading the story in a recording style took a little getting used to as someone use to traditional storytelling, but almost immediately, the plot captured me and held my attention through the whole novel. Jackie has some complying arguments and insatiable curiosity, which is why I loved following her story. As a naturally curious person, I know that if I had grown up in the Tower, I would also be curious as to what was before, and why we as humans were there now. It is almost basic human nature to wonder about the past and the future and how they define us.

Jackie is a naturally intelligent young woman on the brink of becoming an adult, and wants answers that the Tower Authority is strictly against giving. All she has to go on is old movies and music to get a sense of the life before The Creep took over the tower. She also wants to know how far down the tower goes and if maybe just maybe there are other people in other towers. These questions lead Jackie down a dangerous path that she documents by recording her thoughts on a personal recorder. This is how readers experience the story through those recordings.

This story has its dark and creepy in way of the mysterious substance known as the Creep that wants to take over the tower and could wipe out the last survivors. This science fiction almost horror element plus the recording narrative makes this book feel like a found footage horror movie almost, except it is not quite so terrifying for the most part. Trust me there are defiantly some creeptastic moments during Floor 21.

I am glad I had the chance to broaden my reading tastes by reading Floor 21 by Jason Luthor. I will be keeping an eye out to see if he continues his story from Floor 21 or anything else, he decides to write in the future.

I have yet to finish The Mortal Instrument series, or even start the Infernal Devices, but I am hoping to get to them before the new series comes out. I love the Shadowhunter world, and I am curious to see what happens in this Los Angeles based series and how it differs from the New York based The Mortal Instrument series.

My Review of Placebo Junkies

Placebo Junkies is not the typical novel I usually pick up, but it sounded intriguing. I decided to go outside my usual comfort zone, and boy was I rewarded. Placebo Junkies is twisted tale full of unexpected turns right up to the very end. It looks at the underbelly of human testing and clinical trials and what some people do to but it is also very much a story of a young girl trying to survive on her own.

Audie’s story is one of terrible circumstances and her battle to exert her control over her situation. She also has one good thing in her life, her boyfriend Dylan. She wants nothing more than to give him the best experience in life before his cancer possibly takes him. This love story is beautiful, but tragic in many ways.

I have to say I loved the writing style that J.C. Carleson chooses to express Audie’s story. It alternates between Audie’s different clinical trials and the pain surrounding selling your body for science. The author also uses Audie’s “Guinea Pig” blog posts to give more insight into Audie’s viewpoint on human test subjects and her life. I also love that as a reader I had no clue what was going to happen or what was going on around Audie until the very last few pages.

This book is not an easy read for the squeamish, even though it does not go into severe graphic details. I still found it enjoyable in the sense that the book kept me enthralled with trying to find out what was going to happen next, and what exactly was going on with Audie as the story progressed. I would recommend this to also most anyone. I think it is especially enjoyable for fans of realistic fiction or medical based books.

My Review of Twisted Sisters

Twisted Sisters is the sequel I have been waiting forever since reading Tortured Souls last Halloween. I absolutely loved Tortured Souls and I went in to Twisted Sisters with high hopes. I was not disappointed in fact, I was enthralled from the moment I started the prologue. I could not put this book down, the stakes were high, and the ghosts were terrifying. Watching Kacie, Logan and the rest of the Orion Circle try to battle three angry spirits had me nervously chewing my nails the entire time.

Kacie and Logan’s relationship while tested in Twisted Sisters, I can only say grew stronger by the end. I would say that if not for that strength, I am not sure Kacie and Logan would have had any chance against the spirits. At least together, they could try to protect each other and their friends. I am interested to see how their newish relationship progresses in the next installment of the Orion Circle series.

The biggest things that had me on edge was the hints at a past negative history between some of the circle members and a premonition that could lead to an even bigger battle to come in the next installment. I am on my seat waiting to see what Kimber Leigh Wheaton does with the future of this series. If the stakes continue to rise like they did in Twisted Sisters, I cannot imagine where the next book is going to take readers.

Kimber Leigh Wheaton has a way with writing the paranormal that make you feel like you are there experiencing the haunting yourself. She did it with Tortured Souls and I had trouble falling asleep after reading that one, and she has improved that talent with Twisted Sisters. These books while perfect for Halloween, are also great when you want a good suspenseful scary story to make you jump. I highly recommend The Orion Circle series and Twisted Sisters.

My First Real Paranormal Experience

After years of reading about the paranormal and visiting numerous haunted sites, I finally had my first experience in a place I least expected—New Orleans. Yes, I know it’s one of the most haunted cities in America, but my experience didn’t occur in a cemetery or on a ghost tour… it happened in my hotel room at the Holiday Inn.

I was in New Orleans for the Author Reader Convention In August which was held at the Holiday Inn Superdome. I knew nothing about the hotel, other than the location. Upon checking into my room on the sixteenth floor, I immediately felt uneasy. I chalked it up to traveling alone and proceeded to unpack. The feeling of being watched intensified to the point that I could no longer ignore it. I started a rather embarrassing search of the room for a hidden camera. Checked the peephole—it seemed fine. Peered behind the pictures and mirrors and didn’t see anything. I wasn’t able to look in the vents or smoke detectors, which is for the best since by then I felt absurd. I left the room and went to the bar to meet some friends.

That night I didn’t sleep well, though I never felt scared, just odd. I attributed my lack of sleep to the wildly varying room temperature which I’m sure was related to the older A/C unit blowing from the corner. Plus my room overlooked a busy street, and I’m not used to traffic noise. As it turned out, I didn’t sleep well the entire time I was there. The feeling of being watched never went away, and the only place I didn’t feel it was in the bathroom. Thank goodness, right! I started dressing in there even though I had the entire room to myself. I just couldn’t shake that horrible feeling.

The last day of my trip, I met a local who told me the tragic story of the hotel. January 7, 1973, Mark Essex gained access to the hotel, then a Howard Johnsons, through a fire escape and shot a couple on the eighteenth floor. He then set fire to the room and headed to the eleventh floor where he killed two of the hotel managers. Several more people were shot from his perch on the eighteenth floor where he holed up when police arrived. All in all he killed 19 people, 10 of whom were police officers.

Lots of negative vibes in that hotel. To this day, I don’t know if I felt the spirit of the shooter or one of his victims in my room. All I know is that the room had a somber feel to it, and the hair on my nape was at attention more in four days than in the last decade. My husband attributes it to nerves since I was traveling alone. I don’t know what I think, but this was the closest I’ve come to a paranormal experience.

Prologue

A Child’s Toy

Sunlight filtered through the sliding glass door, shining on the brown spirit board spread out on the antique oak table. A bright blue box emblazoned with the words Fun for all Ages sat beside it, along with an instruction sheet. One girl twirled the planchette with her fingers while watching her friend read the instructions aloud. A child’s game bought at a toy store. What harm could it do? These two girls were about to find out that sometimes evil existed in the most innocent of packages.

“Okay, so it says to rest your fingers on that piece,” Melissa said as she tossed the instruction sheet aside.

“If we put our fingers on it, then how do we know that we didn’t move the thing?” Kendra asked, placing the planchette in the middle of the board.

“I don’t know,” Melissa said, rolling her dark eyes. “Did you want to try it or not?”

“Sure, why not.” Kendra released a bored sigh that turned into a yawn. “Why are we up so damn early?”

“I wanted to get an early start.” Melissa’s shoulders scrunched up into a sheepish shrug. “Lots of time until dark, you know, in case…”

“It’s a toy, Melissa,” Kendra said with a snort of laughter.

“Maybe, maybe not.”

“You’re totally kidding, right?” Kendra stared at her friend from the corner of her eye.

Melissa kept a straight face for a few more seconds, then burst into laughter. “Fooled you!”

“Childish much?”

“Okay, just put your fingertips on this thingy.” Melissa placed her fingers on the planchette before giving a pointed look to her friend.

“I feel kinda stupid,” Kendra said as she placed her fingers on the opposite side of the planchette. “So, ah, if there are any spirits who want to communicate, we’re here.”

“Wow, that was dull.” Melissa took a deep breath. “Spirits across the hazy veil. We call to you from beyond the pale.”

“What was that?” Kendra asked, raising her brow.

“Just a little drama.” Both girls stared at their hands which stayed unmoving. “I call to thee spirits for we are here. Any spirit nearby is welcome to appear.”

The planchette began to vibrate and wiggle.

“Are you doing that?” Kendra asked in a shaky voice.

“No,” Melissa whispered back. “Shh! It’s starting to move.”

“Is a spirit here with us?” Kendra called out to the empty room.

The planchette jumped a bit before sliding to the word, yes. But it didn’t stop there. Before either girl could think to ask another question, it shot across the board, flying from letter to letter. Both Kendra and Melissa snatched their hands away from the shuddering, plastic pointer.

Kill, kill, kill. Over and over again.

“Who are you?” Melissa shrieked the question as an invisible wind blew her long hair around her body.

Amy.

“Amy?” The whipping air died with Kendra’s question. Both girls trembled as the planchette moved to yes.

Tracy.

“There are two of you?” Melissa’s face paled. Cabinet doors opened and slammed closed in rapid succession.

Renee, kill…

The planchette paused. Kendra took a breath to ask another question, but before the words reached her lips, the planchette spelled out a new word.

M…u…r…d…e…r.

“Murder?”

Goosebumps spread up Kendra’s arms after she spoke. She hugged her arms around her body, trying to chase away the bitter chill. Dishes flew from the cabinets, smashing to the floor one after the other. Kendra pushed her chair from the table and fled the room. Drinking glasses from the cupboards flew across the room, hitting the wall where Kendra’s head had been just moments before.

Us.

“You were murdered?” Melissa asked through a gasped breath. She clutched the edge of the table with white knuckles, too scared to move. Pieces of shattered pottery lifted from the floor on an invisible whirlwind, blowing around the terrified girl.

Yes, murder. Free, free, free.

A retelling of the story of Aladdin with a female genie! I have to read this one, and not just because Aladdin was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up. I like that this is also a love story and that Zahra has a tough choice to make. I am excited to see how Jessica Khoury recreates the story of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.

I am always up for a good mystery, and I am curious to see how this one turns out. I suspect there will be many surprising twists before this book is over. I love the synopsis and cannot wait to find out what happen to Sonia and Gretchen that night and more importantly WHO was behind it.
