Check Ya Later, Man

I've decided to lay this blog to rest. It's been a great ride, but it's time to move on. Thank you to all of the wonderful people I've met, who've made this endeavor worthwhile.

When I dove into writing and photographing music a few years back, there was a void in my life that seriously needed to be filled. My grandmother had recently passed away, and I was lonely as all hell. I was also shuffling back and forth between Savannah and New York in the midst of a recession, in pursuit of a number of goals. Some things worked out wonderfully. Others did not. That's life. Becoming immersed in music scenes wherever I landed did something magical, which made the whirl significantly easier to navigate at times. I'm extremely grateful for all of it.

Recently, when I began seeing the various segments and searches of the past few years flipping through my head, I knew it was time to call this quits. I don't think I can naturally place something in mental retrospect, while still trying to convince myself that it's a current set of actions. To me, that feels like a paradox. Without consciously (maybe a little) realizing it, I was phasing this out. This is the moment where I should be getting all gushy and wide-eyed, explicitly listing all of the places I've done and people I've seen over the past few years. That, however, is time consuming, and no matter how hard I try, I'm bound to accidentally forget to include someone(s). Besides, this is a blog post, not a f*^&ing Lifetime Achievement Award. I will, though, humbly (and briefly) tip my hat to Danny Arana, Noko and Sean of All New Episode, the Henry Miller Memorial Library, the 20,000 + people who read Altercation at Alter Bridge, powerkompany, Venice is Sinking, Dare Dukes, the Oryx & Crake crew, Patrick Longstreth and NewYorkisBoring.com, Sam Hoyas of Playing Dead, The Kid Henry, One Might Ugly Backpack's Chris Andrews and CMJ. Thank you. Oscar style speech out.

Did I think this would become as involved as it ultimately did? Yeah. When I set an idea into motion, I "ride the wave until the bitch breaks" (Thank you, Hunter S. Thompson.). I'm still going to be collaborating on projects and such in the near future. Maybe, down the line, I'll fully resurrect this blog in some different format, but that remains to be seen. If we've worked together before, and you'd like to reach out for one thing or another, feel free to do so. I'm around, and happy to help.

In some ways, all of this postingandshowgoingandnetworkingandrunningmyassoffforwhat became a posthumous present to my grandmother. I hope she liked it. The bottom line is that losing her sucked. That sort of thing always does. Though I've often stated that "I didn't handle it well," three years later, I actually think I did. From that pain, I created all of this, and that's a beautiful, beautiful thing.

One Mighty Ugly Backpack in Manhattan

Tonight, Saturday, November 24th, One Might Ugly Backpack has organized a great show at the Ding Dong Lounge in Manhattan. Performers include The Bloody Muffs, Cycles, Strange Things Done in the Midnight Sun and The Best Lies.

It's no secret that Chris Andrews from NY band The Best Lies is a pretty active individual. In addition to playing out on a regular basis, he's constantly booking shows in the area under the auspices of One Might Ugly Backpack. Most of the time, he works with and through The Place Bar & Lounge in Greenpoint, but tonight he's set up a show on the other side of the East River at Manhattan's Ding Dong Lounge. Tonight's show gets started at 8PM, and costs $5 at the door. The bands include The Bloody Muffs, Cycles, Strange Things Done in the Midnight Sun and The Best Lies. Below are brief glimpses at all of the acts.

According to their Facebook page, this three-piece band from Brooklyn/Long Island, has been making magic together since August 2011. I couldn't find much more about them on the internets, so they shall remain shrouded in mystery for the time being.

On Saturday, November 17th, Book Club, Blake Rainey & His Demons and Jeremy Ray will hold a triple EP Release party at The Earl in Atlanta. Below is some more information, including a video flyer by Jeff Shipman, and Book Club's latest music video.

For all that I've come across regarding independent music over the past few years, this is the first time I've heard of a Triple EP Release party. It kind of made me happy to learn of it, because my inner hippie felt that it expressed a notion of togetherness; of three different artists convening on one night to show their new creations to their city. All cheesy sentiment aside, that's exactly what it is.

Tonight, Saturday, November 17th, at The Earl in Atlanta, Book Club, Blake Rainey & His Demons and Jeremy Ray will be the acts releasing their achievements to the public. As a publicity method, they worked with visual artist Jeff Shipman to release the video flyer posted below. It's a really cool pixilation animation piece, which I think you should take a look at. Yes, it's aesthetically appealing, but it also consists of all of the information about tonight's show.

Additionally, Book Club has also launched a brand new music video for their track 'Oh, You Lied," the first single off of "Shapes on the Water." Created by Emer Reilly and Robbie Horlick, it "... is a mish-mash of old-school claymation and stop-motion animation, featuring a sasquatch named Frank, and was actually shot entirely on an iPhone."

Tomorrow night, Thursday, November 8th, Savannah, GA band Cusses will be playing at Lit Lounge on Manhattan's Lower East in support of their new self-titled release. They will be joined by local band Brother Reverend.

What the Hell Just Happened?

With all that's gone on since Hurricane Sandy, it's hard to believe that I'm living in the same New York as I was on October 28th. Having lost power for nine days, I definitely missed most of the news coverage of the storm's aftermath, and even now feel like I can't fully comprehend the devastation that has occurred. I had been able to periodically check Facebook from my phone (when it was charged, at least), and what I'd noticed is how well those involved with the greater indie music scene(s) have been banding (no pun intended) together to benefit those effected by Sandy.

Showing Support

One such group is popular Savannah, GA act Cusses. They released their self-titled debut album on October 30th, which is available for purchase on a number of sites including iTunes, Amazon.com, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble. Prior to Sandy's landfall on October 29th, Cusses had already scheduled a few stops in the Northeast in support of their latest endeavor. Luckily, the weather has not forced them to cancel their dates up here, and they will be playing in Manhattan at Lit Lounge on Thursday, November 8th, and at The Flat in Brooklyn on Friday, November 9th. Prior to leaving for tour, the members also set up a Hurricane Sandy donation spot in Savannah, and will be bringing supplies to help out those hardest hit by the storm. That's a wonderful show of humanitarianism, folks.

Tomorrow night, Cusses will be joined at Lit Lounge by awesome NYC band Brother Reverend. According to their Facebook page, they "...cite the chords of Ray Davies, the commitment of Bob Dylan, and the vision of James Brown as an influence." Their latest record, 'Ike Turner Kills Fascists' was released in February 2012, and you can take a listen to it below.

After taking a few months away from posting, things are back in gear. The 2012 CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival kicks off on Tuesday, October 16th, and this blog is going to be having a little party at Brooklyn's Spike Hill on Sunday, October 21st. That night will be all about highlighting the talents of some of Long Island's finest bands.


Hiatus, Quietus

Taking a break from this here blog wasn't something I'd planned on doing. It sort of just gradually happened, and then "Boom!" I realized that this space had been basically dormant from July-September. Ya see, it was that thing called life. Yup, my overall existence took over, and overshadowed this endeavor. I unfortunately didn't have time to really make it out to shows, and most definitely did not have the focus to sit down and document anything. But, that time has since passed, and some pretty cool stuff is in the works.

As many of you know, the 2012 CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival will be running in NYC from Tuesday, October 16th-Saturday, October 20th. Last year, I worked as an official photographer for the Marathon, and I'm happy to say that I'll be doing it all over again in less than a week. If anyone in the area is interested in attending, badge prices range from $150 for a Show Pass to $549 for a full pass. There will also be a host of "unofficial" events going on that week, so keep your eyes peeled for those, as they're a great time as well.

Uncounted Showcase

I was able to set up an "Unofficial CMJ After Party," which will be presented by this blog, at Spike Hill in Brooklyn for Sunday, October 21st. Since I felt that the night as a whole would require a theme (I read too many books in my younger years), I decided that the showcase should be geared towards highlighting some of the wonderful acts currently emerging from the Long Island Music Scene - Wiretap Crash, Vision Through Sound, The Best Lies, All New Episode and Playing Dead. The party will be hosted by popular local indie radio personality Radio J, and will run from 7PM (doors) until midnight. We've also put together a compilation of tracks by the bands who will be performing that night, which you can take a listen to below, or purchase for $1.00 via Bandcamp.com. All proceeds will go towards the showcase itself.

"What's so great about the Long Island Music Scene?" you ask. Good question! If I may, I'd like to provide you with a solid, yet brief, response. The whole "operation" is comprised of some really hard working people, who are in this game for the sheer love of it. That underlying meaning lends itself to creating one helluva fun-loving, welcoming atmosphere. On Friday, October 5th, local organization New Muse Productions, put together a show at Mr. Beery's in Bethpage. I took some photos that night, including shots of Playing Dead and Wiretap Crash, and I think that they can better express the idea that I was just attempting to convey in writing.









So, don't forget - Sunday, October 21st, come down to Spike Hill, and check out some of the best of what Long Island has to offer.

This week, Baton Rouge, Louisiana band England in 1819 will be playing a series of shows in New York City. Andrew Callaway, one member of this family-oriented group, took some time to share thoughts on the origin of their name, touring and the band's first time playing in the Big Apple.

"An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying king,--/Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow/ Through public scorn,--mud from a muddy spring,--" begins 18th Century poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in his politically charged poem England in 1819. Drawing not from the political sentiment of the piece, rather the sense of distance in it's title, a contemporary band of the same name is pushing their way through the size and depth of their musical creations, connecting with a distant time and location in the process.

England in 1819 consists of Andrew Callaway, Liam Callaway, Dan Callaway and Sean Barna. Yes, all of the Callaways listed are relatives. According to Facebook, the band was born in 2007, when brothers Andrew and Dan found themselves "...living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the entire family together for the first time since their childhood spent in the English countryside." They began writing songs with their father Liam, creating "...an unusual combination of Southern edge and English introspection, with haunting lyrics and massive chamber rock unfurling in a sweeping, evocative surge of sound." The band expanded and intensified with the addition of Barna on drums, and recently released their latest album "Alma," which can be purchased on iTunes.

England in 1819 is currently engaged in a tour to support "Alma." This week, they'll be making a two day stop in New York City - first at Fontana's on the 18th, and then on the 19th at Arlene's Grocery. They also recently released a beautiful video for their track 'Waterfall.' Directed by Stephen Kinigopoulos, the work as a whole feels like a snapshot trip through time, helping to further affirm the band's roots, and define their overall philosophy.

Andrew Callaway was gracious enough to take a few minutes out of his tour schedule to answer a few questions I'd sent him. I've posted the conversation below.

1) Is your band named after the Percy Shelley poem? If so, why?

It is a Shelley reference! We were looking through some poetry books at the house and came across the title. England in 1819 is a heavily political poem, written about the corruption and misguided values of the current political situation. We are not a political band. We connected more with the title than the message. We really loved the sense of distance. Distance in location and distance in time. The name by itself implies size and depth and that's central to our music as well.

2) What's it like playing with family?

It's very interesting to tour as a family. We've had a rotating cast of musicians play with us through the years, but the core has been the three of us. We've got a line-up right now that we are thrilled about. The band also includes Sean Barna on drums and we will soon add the very talented Flanna Sheridan on piano and backing vocals which will really expand the sound!

As far as touring with your dad, it's a great experience. Liam is very laid back and we're more comfortable with each other and have an easier time communicating because we've known each other for our whole lives.
3) How arduous has your tour been?

Arduous? That's one way to say it, haha! It's stressful for sure. We had only toured for a few days at a time before we headed out for this 10 week stretch, so we pretty much just dove in. It's really important to like the people you're with because you just spend so much time together. It's also been an absolute blast. We try to balance performing, business (booking, press) and fun/sight-seeing - and that has definitely makes it more enjoyable.

4) Have you played NYC before?

We have not played NYC before. I've driven through a few times, and went with my high school girlfriend and her family to see The Rockettes. We walked around and saw some street performers too - very touristy stuff. I think we're all really excited to see the city. Our little sister goes to school at Parsons and she's given us a whole list of places to go, so we're going to try to get to as many as possible!

Friday in Savannah: Baby Baby and Gun Party

This weekend, Atlanta bands Gun Party and Baby Baby will be playing in the nighttime summer swelter of Savannah, GA. Those of you who know those nights will know that this will be a good night.

I often pride myself on the quirky titles and quasi interesting story lines I insert into these posts. Sometimes, they're really easy to conjure up. Other times, it feels as if the well has run dry. Right now is one of the latter times. In my head, I want to go on and on, discussing some aspect of the music scene in Savannah, and how that city has a lot to offer both residents and visitors in terms of subculture. That sentence is about as far as my brain will go right now. Grown up things have made me tired (insert yawn). Now, I'll get to my point. Yes, I have one.

This June weekend in Savannah should be a damn good time for those who seek such a thing. Two energetic, popular acts from Atlanta will be making their way(s) across highways to perform at The Wormhole. You know that place. You like going there. It's all sorts of enjoyable, and you should check out Baby Baby and Gun Party when they play there on Friday, June 29th.

I had the chance to check out both bands at Atlanta's IMR Music Festival back in April. In my subsequent write-up, I zeroed in on Gun Party's performance, referring to them as being like behind the scenes footage from an Andy Warhol film. The band recently released a new video for their track 'Nothing Like a Sheep to Make You Feel Like a Wolf,' which was directed by Video Rahim.

To tie this up with a nice little bow, I will offer you a description of Baby Baby, crafted by the members of Gun Party.

Quit hatin. These dudes are fun. Raucous party tunes. Sometimes feete shufflink , sometimes a touch of metaltastic. These guys like hard work and ball sweat. If you haven't started moving yet, then you are really really running out of excuses at this point. Save your excuses for when you need them, like the next day when you were supposed to meet this cute girl for coffee at eleven AM, which you make but then have to explain your godawful smell because you met her at bible study and want her to think you are something that you are not.
They have an album. That they recorded. Do that.

The Kids Are United

These United States have released their latest full-length album. They will be playing this Friday, June 15th, at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.

This week, alt-country band These United States released their fifth full-length album - a self-titled piece that expands upon the energy, fluidity and overall clever construction of their previously endeavors. When speaking with Vermont publication Seven Days, front man Jesse Elliott referred to the album's themes as being about "people and places and all the wacky shit" in this fair country. This hard-touring group has also been dubbed by Paste Magazine the "Least Lazy Band in America," having played over 800 shows since 2008, which has included performances at South by Southwest and the CMJ Music Marathon. Members Elliott, J. Thom Hnatow, Justin Craig, Anna Morsett and Aaron Latos will be opening for Willie Nelson on June 18th at the Shubert Theater in New Haven, CT. It's Miller Time

With a new album, new video and recent nod as Deli Magazine Seattle's "Artist of the Month," Long Island native Debbie Miller is tearing up the music scene in that Pacific Northwest city.

Singer. Songwriter. Multi-instrumentalist. Student of Naturopathic Medicine. The closer you look into the repertoire and skills of Seattle-based artist Debbie Miller, the more astounding she becomes. "Miller, a classically trained pianist who studied under a Julliard alumna for ten years," released her full-length debut album 'Fake Love' in 2010. Shortly thereafter, she moved from New York to Seattle, where she dove into the latter city's already noteworthy music scene.

This past March, the Pacific Northwest transplant put forth her latest, the EP "Measures + Waits." The album has been noted by blog The Other Woman as being "...poignant and beautifully put together." Artist Direct has a "crush" on this clever girl, and Seattle Weekly feels that her "...sweet vocals and restrained melodies give all the songs a clean and peaceful aura." The praise for Miller and her latest endeavor expanded even further when she was overwhelmingly voted "Artist of the Month" for May by Deli Magazine Seattle. According to her website, Debbie Miller began her live music "...career in the Brooklyn and East Village music scenes in 2007." Her talent quickly helped her infiltrate the Manhattan circuit, where she began to make appearances at a number of popular venues, including Rockwood Music Hall. Of the performance spot, Miller has stated, "I love playing at Rockwood, simply because the atmosphere is so lovely and intimate. It lends itself both to solo artists and bands, which I think is a hard thing to pull off. It also serves as a kind of 'hang" for musicians which I think help fosters a community for artists. I have always have a great time playing at Rockwood, and play there nearly every time I am back in NY." Of course, her love for intimate live shows did not end when she transferred her career to the West Coast. In mid-April, Debbie held a release party for "Measures + Waits" at Seattle's Columbia City Theater. The photos below are from that show, and all were shot by Nate Watters.

Debbie Miller and I had a little Q & A session via email about her new EP, video, live ensemble and overall music career. The girl has some good things to say, but we know this already. I've posted our exchange, pretty much unedited, below.

1) Why pursue a career in music? When did you 1st begin writing/performing as a solo artist?

I never thought I would be a singer songwriter. I was under the impression that you needed to be really prolific like Bob Dylan - and the music and words flow through you and you didn't have to think too much. Once I started learning how to play the guitar in college, I thought about writing songs, but I didn't know where to start. In 2007ish after I'd moved back to NY from Boston post-college, I started singing backup & playing a little piano (I'm a classically trained pianist) with Shanna Zell - a talented singer/songwriter and also one of my best friends. That was my first formal introduction to the music scene in NYC. I think being in that environment re-sparked my desire to write. When I was 24, I wrote my first full song at work. It was called "Fake Love", and it was about.... fake love. That was around February, and by June I'd written 2 more songs. When I was offered my first official gig in Feb 2008, I still didn't have enough songs to fill up a 45 minute set, so I wrote a bunch more. And the rest is... the rest. (comedic drumroll)

My music is an extension, and sometimes at the core of who I am. That is why I do it. When I have hard days and think about quitting I literally can't - it is too much a part of me. Also, in music - just as a general statement - there is always room for you somewhere, and there is always a place to play whether its at an open mic, on the street busking, or in a stadium. That is beautiful to me.

2) You perform live w/ an ensemble. Does the cast of characters rotate often? Who are these people and the instruments they play? Did they play on the album tracks as well?

When I am in New York, I often play with the same musicians unless someone has another commitment. Jeremiah Birnbaum has been playing lead guitar for me for over 4 years now, and he even came out to Seattle for my west coast album release show to play on the set which was really special. My New York peeps often include Leah Goldstein (vocals), Greg Coladarci (guitalele - he produced both of my albums), Amanda Gookin & Madeleine Craw Corliss(cello), Fred Kennedy (drums). My bass player always seems to rotate - I have been lucky to have the talents of Matt Wigton, Daniel Foose, and Tony Maceli join me on stage. Sometimes, though, I also perform solo or just with Jeremiah.

When I moved to Seattle last year, I met violinist Jason Welling. We have played a few shows together as a duo. Once I had my album release show organized, I decided it was time to get a band together out here. My band consisted of Tara Kelly Kearns (vocals), Scott Shrock Jr (bass), Ivan Gunderson (drums), Jason Welling (violin), Lijie (vocals, glockenspeil), Amanda Winterhalter (vocals, accordion). I'm sure there will continue to be a rotating cast of characters.

3) What's your view of your personal music style; new album; video? What direction do you feel like your music career is headed in?

I'm still not quite sure what my style is. When people ask me my genre, I resort to "indie-folk". But the truth is, I just write what I feel like without thinking about what category I am trying to fit into. Some of my songs are folky, some have a classical twist, some are funny, some aren't. Having the ability to play both piano and guitar gives me a lot of freedom to experiment with different styles. My musical style is really just an extension of myself. My goal is always to be honest - and I never feel more honest than when I am performing my songs in front of others.

My new album is similar to my first album in some ways - there are serious songs, there are light hearted songs, and songs that I hope people laugh out loud at. I think there is a slight difference in the feel of the new EP (Measures + Waits) when compared to Fake Love. Fake Love was recorded over the course of a year, so my producer (Greg Coladarci) and I were able to create several versions of songs, tweak things lots of times. The new EP was mostly recorded in 4 days. I think that gives it a more organic feel.

My music video for "What's She Got" was so ridiculously fun to envision, brainstorm, and shoot. The song is silly, there is flashmob-ish choreography, I have a giant bra and I get hit by a gargantuan courderoy heart that I got from Target (best $20 ever spent). My mom keeps asking me if I can "make the video go viral", or if I am "trending". I still don't know how she learned all of those words, but I tell her... "I'm trying my best."

My music career is continuing to grow, and I am continuously getting really fun opportunities to share my songs. I am going anywhere and everywhere it will take me, whether it's someone's living room or at a big venue. The most important thing to me is that I stay true to myself and my art - it's this way I feel like I am succeeding.

4) How long ago did you move to Seattle? What drew you to that location? Describe how you perceive the music community in that city in comparison to NY.

I moved to Seattle in Sept 2010 to attend graduate school. (I don't know if this will be interesting for your blog.) I am in a full-time medical program studying naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University. Like my music, what I am studying I feel is an extension of myself. I am so lucky I am in a situation that I have time for both of these things in my life.

The Seattle and New York communities are quite different - but then again when I moved to Seattle, I was in a much different place with my music. When I started out in NY, I literally was starting from scratch - writing songs, learning how to books shows, trying to figure out how to put a band together, networking, etc. When I arrived in Seattle, I already had an album under my belt. To say I "hit the ground running" is an overstatement, but I certainly had a lot more experience that gave me a difference perspective. Seattle is of course a much smaller city, and so is the community. There are lots of opportunities to play a lot of different type of shows. Back in New York I was playing a show once or more a month, usually at Rockwood or Bar 4. In Seattle, I have played at songwriter-in-the-round shows, art-walk shows, cafes, large venues, benefit shows. Most recently, I have gotten involved with The Bushwick Bookclub Seattle (actually originating in Bushwick, Brooklyn) which presents songs inspired by books, performed in front of a live audience. This clearly exists in NY as well, but I think because Seattle is smaller, it tends to draw somewhat of a larger audience. Soon, I will be playing at my first outdoor festival, which is very exciting!

When I started out in New York, I was so fortunate to have been a part of the Local Correspondents music community in Brooklyn which is largerly based out of Bar 4 in Park Slope. I miss that community a great deal - it is really where I feel I grew the most at a writer and a performer. It is comprised of a highly talented group of musicians, whose presence I am usually humbled in and whose songs I still am continuously inspired by. New York also has amazing venues for singer-songwriters that are intimate like Rockwood Music Hall and The Living Room. I think Seattle would truly benefit from venues of this type - they are slightly harder to find here. That is not to say that Seattle doesn't have fantastic venues as well, sometimes they are just slightly more conducive to band shows.

The one thing that both Seattle and New York have is an amazing crop of talented musicians and bands. I am so lucky to have experienced being immersed in both scenes.

Altercation at Alter Bridge

This week, hard rock band Alter Bridge and their social media staff fueled a controversy over the use of a photograph by concert photographer Dan DeSlover from ConcertCapture.com.

Concert photographer Dan DeSlover found his work at the center of a debate regarding legalities, courtesies and artist's rights, when a photo he'd shot of Mark Tremonti from Alter Bridge ended up on the group's Facebook page by way of a third party. Though the visual artist was given proper photo credit, no link to his website was included. It was also brought to DeSlover's attention that his photo was being utilized for a commercial purpose - the sale of Tremonti's new solo effort via iTunes (seen in the screenshot above). He then contacted Alter Bridge's management, asking for a small sum of $75 as compensation. Management declined, and then removed his photo from the band's page.

There is nothing wrong with a photographer asking for payment. There is also nothing wrong with the band and their camp deciding not to pay, and then simply removing a photograph. The issue should have ended there. What the admin(s) of Alter Bridge's fanpage did next is where I feel the true offense occurred. They took a private business issue, and made it extremely public. They also did so in what came across as a condescending manner. Below is a copy of the status update that was posted on Alter Bridge's page addressing the incident:

Sorry we had to take down the picture of Mark. Got an email from the photographer wanting to charge us $75.00 to display it. Needless to say, we declined. Post a cool picture of Mark on our page and we will use it tomorrow!

Time spent working on a grassroots level has brought me to a few, still evolving, conclusions. When dealing with artists, payment kind of operates on a sliding scale - like a clinic might. Sometimes what a musician can afford to pay a photographer is little to nothing. I have gotten paid for my efforts in the form of T-shirts, free drinks, free admission, gratitude and occasionally cash. When I break it down, and look at what they're getting paid for their efforts, my compensation seems fair enough. If/when financial circumstances change, then fees should as well. I'd like to stress again that I have worked solely with independent artists. They are not supported by labels, do not have over 700,000 fans on a social networking site, do not have albums that have graced the Billboard charts and most certainly do not have strong-willed public relations and management professionals consistently working on their behalf. A photographer can't expect to be paid professional level rates by a group of fledgling rockers, just as those same rockers can't expect to be paid by a venue, or say BMI, in the same way that a band like Alter Bridge can. That's where my sliding scale theory comes into play. Alter Bridge could have paid DeSlover $75 to use a photo they liked. They chose not to, and ceased using his work. Fine. Further choosing to use a public forum to mock that man's effort to get paid is bad form. What the band and their staff overlooked is that a public statement is open to response. A response is exactly what they got.

Some people who commented supported their "needless to say..." attitude, while others took a contrary stance. In an effort to feign good PR, the Facebook admins took it upon themselves to delete all comments that made Alter Bridge look bad, posed a number of contradictory arguments, and then ultimately deleted the whole thread without ever apologizing to the photographer. A few savvy types from the Facebook group Music Photographers screen captured portions of that which has now been deleted, and posted it on Reddit.

The overall notion of how to make a proper living as a creative exists in an expansive gray area. Take this blog, for example. Whether I like it or not, this online endeavor of mine is essentially a non-profit. Since starting it in December, Google Ad Sense has calculated that I've earned $.91. So really, if you break it down, I'm paying to play as much as the musicians. I obviously know I'm not alone, which is both reassuring and depressing. Artists of all varieties have, throughout history, fought to be, not only appreciated, but compensated. Putting your hopes on securing a stable income through the music industry is probably not the best idea. If you're going to swim in that ocean, you better enjoy it, because gratification will most likely be your most substantial form of payment. Bills have to get paid, and that's why we have day jobsw. If we're lucky, we spend our days working within our field in one way or another. That's really all we can ask for.

Mike from the Henry Miller Memorial Library was awesome enough to point me in the direction of some bands local to the Big Sur, CA area. So, here's a peak at a few of the acts working the indie circuit in The Golden State.

Levi Strom

Oregon native Levi Strom describes his style as being a blend of folk, rock, country, new wave, jam and electronic; "heartfelt but bold, with gravity heavy lyrics and oddly catchy melodies." He first appeared on the West Coast scene back in 2005, when he released his self-titled debut album. After five years of songwriting, and another year of recording, mixing and mastering (in both Big Sur and L.A.), Strom released his follow-up album "The Lone Wolf" in September of 2011. According to the artist's website, "Many of the tracks were recorded live, some right as they were being written...If you want a taste of the many styles Levi is capable of, this record will not disappoint...".

His new single "Songbird" was released this past December, and has been featured on the Stanford Soundtrack 2011 Compilation. For those of you who live in the New York area, Levi Strom will be playing with Cave Country, who you'll learn more about in just a moment, at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn on Friday, June 8th.

Cave Country

Comprised of members Jim Reynolds (Vocals/Guitar), Evan apRoberts (Vocals/Guitar), John Thompson (Drums/Percussion) and Andrew MacIver (Vocals/Keys), Cave Country "is a contemporary blend of country, indie rock and folk, colored by rich vocal harmony that emanate from their home on the California coast." Reynolds, apRoberts and Thompson had been playing together in a progressive outfit called 'Madeline Flats,' when in 2008, they took the advice of a friend, and decided to focus on creating "songs from the heart." Cave Country released their first self-titled effort in 2009, and have since come forth with their full length album, "Just a Little Coal." They have been noted by Deli L.A. writer Hugo Gomez as being "...warm, melodic and honest -- the way folk music should be."

The sounds of Cave Country are consistently associated with the state they call home, evoking notions of sunshine, wine sipping and life on the road. They have been compared to popular artists such as Buffalo Springfield, Wilco and The Byrds. Below is the video for their soft, breezy, harmonious track 'Constant Arrival.'

The Range of Light Wilderness

Based in, and inspired by, Big Sur, this Gnome Life Records band consists of Tommy Frank MacDonald (Vocals/Guitar), Jessie Campbell (Vocals/Drums) and Nick Alves (Vocals/Bass). They released a 16-track self-titled album in June of 2011, and can make you feel like "...that old beach blanket in your trunk might really be a magic carpet...It's all moonlight and waves here, pine-pitch and sunshine."

Last year, The Range of Light Wilderness was interviewed by San Francisco publication Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website, a really entertaining, irreverent site designed for "...busboys, poets, social workers, students, artists, musicians, magicians, mathematicians, maniacs, yodelers and everyone else out there who wants to enjoy life not as a rich person, but as a real person." Honestly, the whole endeavor is worth taking a look at. Anyway, the interviewer lovingly pegged them as both hippies and hilarious people, whilst referring to their sound as being "beautiful beachy surfy folk music."

The Shrouded Strangers

Take a quick look at their Facebook page, and you'll see that the members of The Shrouded Strangers have placed themselves in these genres: "Psych-Honky Tonk, Guitar Cubism, Appalachian Jazz." Guitar Cubism? Creative placement. Creative group. They individually hail from all over the USA (DC, Pennsylvania, Virginia, California), which adds to the diversity that comprises their style.
The Shrouded Strangers' latest undertaking, the "Lost Forever" LP, was released in early 2012, and can be purchased via the band's website. This past April, their new single 'Featherbed' was featured on My Old Kentucky Blog, who translated the track's energy as "...thick guitar fuzz, made-in-heaven riff, and, and yummy psychedelic effects." The child of the '90s in me feels right at home hearing a band that jogs my memory into spitting out the name Eric's Trip.

Sidenote: The Shrouded Strangers played at Le Voyeur in Olympia, WA in March of this year. About five years ago, I spent a very lovely night at that bar with some old friends and their friends (some of whom worked at the establishment), drinking beers way after they'd shut the doors to outside customers. Great night. I bought a T-shirt. I still wear it.

Overview of Atlanta's IMR Music Festival, which was held at The Five Spot on April 27th and 28th. Originally seen in Target Audience Magazine.

I view Atlanta from the perspective of an outsider. I have no choice but to do so. I am neither a native, nor a transplanted resident. I have, however, been a resident of a number of other cities, including New York, Boston, Asheville and Savannah. My natural inclination is to compare Atlanta to those places with which I’m familiar. I could say that its subculture is akin to Asheville’s; its prolonged summer and hints of lawlessness remind me of Savannah; its firmly rooted, respected history is strikingly Bostonian; and of course, its drive, zest and networking skills deserve a snug seat in the corner of a bar on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Really, what I just did was pretty unfair to the city of Atlanta – depriving it of an independent description and all. I do, however, solemnly swear that I only did it because I don’t yet know enough about the city to properly assess the traits that declare its independence. So, let’s get started with that.

Atlanta is a city of independents. It’s a city of hospitality, style, realism, enthusiasm and more than a little bit of hedonism. Oh, and furnished front porches – it’s full of porches that seem eerily absent of people occupying the decorated spaces. Ruminate as you will. Atlanta is also a city of community, both mainstream and underground. The last weekend in April was a prime example of that such fellowship. That Saturday, the annual, wildly popular (as was evident by the volume of traffic) Inman Park Festival was in full effect. In addition, IMR, or Indie Music Reviewer to the less informed, held their first ever two day festival at The Five Spot on April 27 ^th & 28th. Though I was unable to attend the former, I was there for portions of the latter, where I socialized to the best of my socially awkward ability, and also took some photographs.

On Friday, I captured performances by Jack of Hearts, Baby Baby, Cusses and Trances Arc. Experience has shown me that a live show by Savannah’s Cusses is generally a slam dunk, and their appearance at the IMR Music Festival was no exception. The lovely Angel Bond ensnared her audience with her gritty, yet sweet, vocals and dynamic movements. I was also truly floored by the power of Jack of Hearts. Drummer Sarah Wilson is the catalyst of that group, taking their well-crafted rock/pop style to visceral, primal extremes. I spent much of Saturday just watching, and getting absorbed in the scene at The Five Spot. Gun Party snapped me out of my trance. They describe themselves on Facebook as being “…an eclectic hornet's nest of melodic mayhem…,” and I’d say that’s right on target. They’re like a wild party in a forgotten industrial warehouse; something out of a graphic novel; the “behind the scenes” footage of an Andy Warhol film.

It’s hard to gauge the success and overall merit of a music festival’s freshman year. As the event is going on, every precedent is in the process of being set. I refuse to be one of those people who letter grades a festival, so I’ll simply offer a few observations. The IMR Music Festival was nearly as visual as it was musical. Each band’s performance was accompanied by a sort of laser light extravaganza, which enhanced the view for the general audience, as well as the dozen or so photographers and videographers present. Spending two days holed up in a single location full of kinetic lights and roaring music can get a bit redundant. Though a sense of constriction was generated as a result of situating the festival solely at The Five Spot, doing so also had the ability to create a sense of camaraderie; of hunkering down in a fort and planting seeds. As far as business decisions go, I believe the organizers were wise to choose only one location. Start small. Assess when it’s over. Grow over time.

The IMR Music Festival would have been more Boston if conversations about German poetry could be overheard at the bar; more Asheville if groups of train jumpers had been roaming the parking lot with their mutts; more New York if attendees had been darting their heads nervously about, looking for some elusive big break; and more Savannah if the whole sha-bang had ultimately been broken up by the cops. But it was none of that. It was Atlanta – conspiringly creative and neighborly – already energetically building upward from this year’s foundation.

Sometimes, tragedy hits close to home. A number of Long Island bands recently played a benefit show at Mr. Beery's to aid the family of fellow musician Mike Miller.



Normally, I like to post positive notices about musicians. Unfortunately, life doesn't always swing to the positive pole, so having a 100% good cheer rate is impossible. There is, however, a certain degree of contentment that can arise from acknowledging that reality, and also a certain joy that can be experienced when resources and passions are pooled to help alleviate some of the negative.

A few weeks ago, a benefit show was held at Mr. Beery's in Bethpage NY, to raise money for the family of local musician Mike Miller. Miller is the vocalist/guitarist, and the head namesake, of Mike Miller & the High Life, an outfit which also consists of Matt McLaughlin (Bass/Backing Vocals), Dom Barranco (Drums/Percussion) and Jess Debellis (Keys/Percussion/Backing Vocals).

In early March of this year, Mike Miller's cousins, Matthew and Elizabeth Bergman, lost their lives as result of injuries they sustained in an apartment fire in Reno, Nevada. He was 16, she was 12. The April 15th show on Long Island was arranged as a means of raising money to help Miller's uncle Ronald begin a financial recovery process after enduring such a terrible loss. Mike Miller & the High Life was joined that night by Playing Dead, Graz & the Dangerous Few, as well as Andrew and Derek from Vision Through Sound. Below are a few performance photos I shot.

That night, Mr. Beery's and Mike Miller were able to successfully raise $508 for the surviving members of the Bergman family. There were also a number of fundraising efforts in California and Nevada, as well an online campaign, the latter of which reached a total of $5617.

Long Island band The Kid Henry will be playing at The Studio at Webster Hall tomorrow night, April 25th. They've got a lot of drive, a lot of heart and a lot worth paying attention to.



I have, on a number of occasions, described the members of The Kid Henry as being "some of the nicest people I've ever met." That's not an exaggeration either. They are definitely a genuine group, always ready to extend the hand of friendship to those they meet, and then openly support those friends when moments and happenings call for such gestures. The "human" aspect of this band is far from the only thing that defines their role in the somewhat fragmented music scene on Long Island; their sound is head turning - driven by skill, enthusiasm and downright clever songwriting.

According to their Facebook page, "The Kid Henry is an alternative rock band, featuring classically-trained vocalist Alexandra Lombardi. Formed in 2008, The Kid Henry has been a fixture in the resurgent Long Island music scene ever since. The individuals that make up The Kid Henry bring together eclectic musical taste and style to create a distinct sound built on driving rhythm, anthemic melody and personal, honest lyrics." A recent article on LongIsland.com, stated that "One thing you can count on from this band is a high-energy, exciting performance," and also focused on the group's flow, camaraderie and multitude of musical talents. The Kid Henry will be playing tomorrow night, Wednesday, April 25th, at The Studio at Webster Hall in New York City. Dallas, TX band Nervous Curtains will be playing a string of shows in the NYC area this weekend. Here's some more information about them, their latest album release and spring tour.

Texas post-punk/synth trio Nervous Curtains offers listeners "black humor in dramatic presentation" and "hypnotic waves of power, torn and jagged as rock music tends to be." The band formed in 2009, and released their first album "Out of Sync with Time" in 2010. Members Sean Kirkpatrick (vocals/keyboard instruments), Ian Hamilton (keyboard instruments) and Robert Anderson (percussion instruments) debuted their latest album "Fake Infinity" in February 2012. Released on Latest Flame Records, the album is described in both straight-forward and musing fashions, consistent with the feelings of our listless, lost, sometimes hapless, ironically hopeful era. The bright-eyed aspects of this perspective seem to be focused more on surviving, rather than thriving. It all makes me think of the early days of the Renaissance and post-apocalyptic films like "Children of Men." More simplistically, it's just the reality of living in this here 21st Century. Fiddling while Rome is burning, I guess. Anyway, here's that description:

A landscape of discarded metal baked on broken concrete foundations of abandoned buildings...carefree summers have given way to oppressive heat waves. Naive optimism and idealism have been shattered. There's a new beauty in the rubble. The world is at its end, and it's whatever you make it to be. "Kill your dreams before they kill you." Be grateful for the advice. This is certainly no beach party.

Baeble Music recently posted their video for track "Coming Out Viral." The site also offered a description of the video's narrative structure - "...a schizophrenic priest discovers a book, which sheds an uncomfortable light on the extreme polarities between public and private life."

Their tour does not stop in NYC. After playing in NYC, Nervous Curtains will be heading to other large cities such as Washington D.C. and Chicago. A complete list of their spring tour stops can be found on their blog.

The Dirty Grand EP Release

On March 27th, NYC three piece The Dirty Grand released a hard copy preview of their new EP "Facedown" at Williamsburg's Cameo Gallery. Wendy 13ird was there with her camera.

On March 27th, NYC outfit The Dirty Grand held a party at Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg to offer fans a free hard copy preview of their new EP "Facedown." Before coming together as a unit, members Jake Bernstein, Tony Diodore and Andrew Griffiths were already veterans of NYC's music community. Since introducing themselves to the local scene back in October, they have played at a number of popular venues, including Pianos, Webster Hall and Brooklyn Bowl, as well as the aforementioned Cameo Gallery. "Facedown" is the band's second EP. You can take a listen to it via their Bandcamp site.

Last week's show received a preliminary write-up in Deli Magazine, in which their style of electronic post-punk was compared to "...reflective, after-hours groups like Destroyer and The Weeknd. Beyond the novelty of carving out a place equal parts electronica and post-punk, Dirty Grand also displays a deep cynicism, providing an unsettling backdrop to their urban meditations."

Flyers by Oryx & Crake and The Viking Progress

The Viking Progress is releasing their new album "Whistling While the End is Near." In support of this, they will be playing with Oryx & Crake this weekend in both Atlanta and Athens.



Patrick Morales of The Viking Progress is yet another player in the friendly, collaborative Georgia music scene with which I'm so enamored. His band's new album, "Whistling While the End is Near," is a prime, tangible example of what can be achieved when people combine their brains and talents. Being the result of years of experiences, circumstances and labor, it should not go unnoticed.

According to information provided by a variety of sources, Patrick was introduced to the members of Oryx & Crake five years ago, after returning to Georgia from "...spending a summer working on two Alaskan fishing boats, the Viking and the Progress, and had a collection of roughly recorded songs which he'd written and recorded on those boats. Through the creaks of the boat, the hiss of his cheap tape recorder, and his fingers fumbling to turn it on and off between takes, there were some haunting and infectious melodies that had pretty weighty subject matter. Each of the songs was a vignette of a different person (or persons) experiencing the ending of the world."



When Patrick teamed up with Suny Lyons (Hope For Agoldensummer) to turn his initial recordings into a fully produced album, he sought the additional skills of Oryx & Crake's Matt Jarrard, Marie Davon of Venice is Sinking and powerkompany and Scott Spillane, the last of whom has worked with Neutral Milk Hotel and Elephant 6. A preview of "Whistling While the End is Near" is included below.

Oryx & Crake and The Viking Progress will be playing tonight, March 30th, at The Earl in Atlanta, and tomorrow, March 31st, at The Caledonia Lounge in Athens. These are a pair of shows not to be missed. In addition to getting a live taste of "Whistling While the End is near," the audiences will also have the opportunity to hear preview tracks from Oryx & Crake's new album. Morales also recently went on tour with Dare Dukes in support of the latter's latest release "Thugs and China Dolls." Not So Tarnished

Beneath a relatively shiny exterior, the city of Boston boasts an impressive roster of gritty, dynamic musical inhabitants. Here's a glimpse at the contributions of two local acts - The Dirty Dishes and Art Decade.



How Do You Pronounce Worcester?

Back in my younger, wiser days, I spent almost a year living in downtown Boston. I don't know everything there is to know about the place, but I think I have a decent understanding of it.

There are more than 100 colleges in the greater Boston area. This lends to it's outward demographic appearing to be largely comprised of junior yuppie frat types, who holler and philander after one too many pints of beer. The T (that's "subway" to the common New Yorker) stops running just around midnight. The bars tap out at 2am. Boylston Street, a main transportation vein in and out of the downtown area, is dotted with shops selling power suits that only Nancy Grace could love. And I swear, even the tourist-trodden pavement on that particular strip smells oddly like laundry detergent.

All of that, however, is just the surface of Boston, and it's a largely misleading surface at that. Dig a little deeper, and there's a serious amount of subculture to be found in this New England metropolis. The city's music scene has been steadily redesigning and defining itself as well as the prominent, symphony standardized world of academia, with which Boston has come to be explicitly associated.



Dirty, Dirty

The Dirty Dishes began playing together in 2008, and have since crafted "...their distinct musical style which has been compared to My Bloody Valentine, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deerhoof and Smashing Pumpkins." The "four piece indie/shoegaze band" released their 5-track album "The Most Tarnished Birds" on March 4th. Boston publication "The Dig" referred to front woman Jenny Tuite's vocals as being "mesmerizing...comatose poetry with a kung fu grip."

Their live performance is like a musical version of synchronized athletics. It feels like members Zack Fierman (drums), Alex Molini (synth/guitar), Doug Wartman (bass) and Tuite (guitar/vocals) , make moves within assigned plays, never losing site of the construct of their songs, and how to best transfer their overwhelming energy to the audience. It's hard to tell whether that understanding is instinctual, learned or both, but I don't think that pinpointing the root of their talent as a unit really matters. What does matter, and what is clear as day, is that, on stage, The Dirty Dishes capture and covey both the calculations of science and the consciousness of art.

They recently wrapped up a series of shows at SXSW, and tonight will be performing with Cloud Nothings at Brighton Music Hall, as a part of "MTV Hive Live in Boston." Entry is $10, and the show will be live streamed to a global audience. Below are photos I shot of The Dirty Dishes' January show at Brooklyn's Shea Stadium.





Define: Art

The core members of Boston's Art Decade include Ben Talmi (guitar/vocals) and Binod Singh (bass/vocals). With a name derived from David Bowie's album "Low," the band utilizes a drummer, second guitarist and occasional string ensemble for live performances. In an interview with The Peverett Phile, Art Decade's musical influences were associated with ELO and Muse. Talmi cited respect for the arrangements of legendary Beatles producer George Martin, and stated, "I would be so happy if I ever got the opportunity to score a film, definitely a dream of mine...".
The title of Art Decade's debut album, "Western Sunrise," extends the astute, educated, classical thread running through the core of this band. It is based on the title of a poem, and was interpreted by Talmi as being a description of achieving the impossible. Though the album has yet to be released to the public in full, a preview of the title track is available.

The track is also accompanied by a beautiful visual explosion, reminiscent of the stylings of 19th C. Impressionist painters. Produced by Ricky Gonzalez and directed by Whitney Alexander, the "Western Sunrise" video has been featured in Motionographer, as well as Stash 90.

The gritty, dynamic musical inhabitants of Boston definitely reflect and expand upon the city's history and classically influenced culture. They do, however, take it to another level, by weaving that intellect with a fervent desire to create and publicize their independent endeavors. So, here's to you, Boston. If any of you ever travel there, don't hesitate to further explore the city's music scene. And if you stumble out of a bar after the T has shut it's gates for the night, just call a cab. It's not that hard.

Preview Pick: NovaKord//"Out There"

Atlanta, GA band NovaKord will be releasing their new album "Out There" on Friday, April 7th during their show at local venue The Basement.

On Friday, April 7th, Atlanta-based experimental/progressive trio Novakord will be releasing their latest album "Out There." This debut will coincide with the band's performance at The Basement, where they will be joined by acts Dark Room, We Roll Like Madmen and Wowser Bowser.

NovaKord describes themselves as combining "...the progressive scope of electronica infused bands like Radiohead with the mainstream appeal similar to Muse." The title track from their complete soon-to-be-released work was named "Best Song of 2011" by the Atlanta Writer's Roundtable, and Indie Music Reviewer has noted that "NovaKord brings the phrase ‘vocal hotness’ to a new level...A SOLID group with great sounds...your ears are left yearning for more.” It's definitely a sound that envelopes the listener. NovaKord's ample style pulls you into a zone, where you can fully absorb the band's carefully constructed beats and compositions.

Members Wes Daniel (vocals/guitars/keyboards), Billy Snyder (bass/keyboards/vocals) and Johnny Cunningham (drums/percussion/vocals) have been playing together under the band's name for just over a year. They have quickly accumulated a solid following in their home city, and will be touring throughout the Southeast this spring to endorse "Out There." Soul Interchange

Charleston, SC band Megan Jean & the KFB will be playing at the Rodeo Bar and Grill in NYC on Monday, March 19th. These modern day gypsies are brilliant, fierce and full of soul.

What is soul? If I were writing a high school research paper on the subject, the next paragraph would consist of some academic, dictionary definitions of the word itself. If I were writing a college research paper, I would go into vast philosophical rhetoric on the general subject, dissecting it until it no longer resembled its high school self. Believe me, I'm tempted to do all of that, but I won't.

So anyway, what is soul? It feels weird, and almost inappropriate, to try to define it in words, but this is writing, so I'll persist. Soul is certainly an abstract thing. It's a broad, innate sense of feeling, very often associated with artists. I am of the opinion that soul cannot be taught in school. No matter how skilled one becomes in his or her craft, if they don't naturally tune into that something called soul, then - frankly - they just don't have it.

I doubt that many people walk into a music venue seeking soul like a metal detector clutching hobbyist on a beach. Most of the time, you show up because you want to show up, and can be pleasantly caught off guard when soul grabs your shoulders, and eloquently, passionately screams in your face. That's what happened to me when I first saw Charleston, SC husband and wife duo Megan Jean & the KFB back in October 2010. On their blog, they describe themselves as being "hard-touring, foot stompin', guitar beatin', upright lickin', washboard scratchin', banjo pickin' madness with a voice like the devil herself." Their 2010 release "Dead Woman Walking" is the kind of album that is so real and raw, you reach out to it when looking for such things as insight and solace.

Megan Jean & the KFB has spent much of the winter recording at KJP in Birmingham, AL. The videos below were shot during two separate performances in Macon, GA this past fall. They were accompanied in The Blue Indian with write-ups by William Haun, who noted that "the eclectic multi-instrumentalists...have made their mark...and it's safe to say that they play as important a role in Macon's music scene as any of our local bands." The band will be marking up New York City on Monday, March 19th, when they will be playing a 9pm show at the Rodeo Bar and Grill.

Megan Jean & the KFB will also be appearing on the PBS show Music Voyager. The episode is centered around East Tennesse, and will air in NYC on April 26th. For more information about the show and this particular listing, follow this link.

Touring Edition

Two bands from two entirely different locations - Freshkills (NYC) and Daymoths (Minnesota) - will be playing in Atlanta next week. Here's some more information on both.

Freshkills



This Brooklyn-based group initially struck me as being a grittier, more genuine cousin to bands such as Franz Ferdinand and The Strokes. Freshkills have an in-your-face sound attitude (sounditude?) that is too often lacking in today's rock n' roll culture. Consistently described in the press as being "post-punk," they will be releasing their latest album, "Raise Up the Sheets" on March 13th. According to their website, "The songs are prettier, darker, more concise and more expansive...The whole band sounds like they've been cornered and will have to fight their way out." They have previously toured the US and UK w/ the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sleigh Bells and TV On the Radio.
After playing tonight's show at Pianos in Manhattan, Freshkills will be heading further south, stopping in Atlanta for a March 12th show at The Earl.

Daymoths

This two-piece ensemble hails from Twin Cities, Minnesota, and consists of Emily Dantuma (piano/organ/keyboards/vocals) and Ollie Dodge (drums/vocals). Represented by Orchid Promotion, the company's website describes the Daymoths as having reached a "stripped down, spacious sound - easy on the ears, but with hints of the edgy, experimental perspectives these two have become known for...Sentimental but not overly fluffed or cheesed out...". Their past shows have been reviewed by a number of publications in the Midwest and beyond, and their work has received consistent air time on CMJ supported stations throughout the country.
Daymoths released their ambient, subtle and pleasant album, "Back in Time," in December of 2011. They are currently touring in support of it, and will be playing at Atlanta's Drunken Unicorn on March 14th.

Randy Garcia: Surge of a Maverick

Atlanta musician Randy Garcia has recently released a solo effort, entitled 'Resurgens," and is also involved with a number of other endeavors in and around his local music community.



When I first became acquainted with Atlanta-based musician Randy Garcia and his new solo album "Resurgens," I was pretty much astounded - not just by the intricate and enjoyable creation he was presenting, but by the sheer depth of his overall ability and involvement with his local music community. In addition to being a solo artist, Garcia is proprietor of, and producer for, Nophi Recordings, has been hosting Atlanta music festival Nophest for the past six years, and is also the drummer for Swank Sinatra. It takes a lot of energy and intelligence to hold so many titles, and Randy Garcia does so with true panache. With all of that being said, let's take a closer look at this man and his projects.





Nophi Recordings' realization, "Resurgens," is Garcia's tenth full-length album, which he released under the monicker R_Garcia. It is the fruition of over a decade's worth of brainstorming, experiencing, musing and learning. It "...evokes Atlanta, comebacks and revenants...the tracks comment on the evolution of electronic music from 80s techno-pop to the present...as if you were listening to someone's life-long collection of songs you've somehow never heard before, or perhaps the soundtrack to their dreams." In response to the album, electronic music magazine Igloomag stated, "Randy Garcia is a master craftsman, involved with and exceeding every level of his work, and brings a winsome attitude to his music that makes it irresistible." Think of "Resurgens" as a dance escapade, with the unforgettable edge of personal poetry. It's a prime example of solid music, and a perfect accompaniment to both your day-to-day existence and Saturday night escape. Feel free to take a listen for yourself:

Garcia's creative ventures also include his involvement with rock outfit Swank Sinatra. According to the band's Facebook Page, they are known around Atlanta for their "high energy shows and unrelenting sound." Members Bob Place, Brandon Pittman and Garcia want to "...climb a mountain just to start an avalanche. They would sail a ship just to watch it sink...In all reality...Swank Sinatra has played a lot of shows, met a lot of cool people, and even learned a little along the way." Their latest album, "El Terrible," was released by Nophi Recordings this past January, and can be found on the band's site. All promotional photos of them were taken by Kamil Lee.

The common thread in all of Randy Garcia's aforementioned musicality is, of course, Nophi Recordings. Founded in 1998, it focused primarily on "...instrumental and electronic music, relying heavily on handmade aesthetic and grass-roots promotion. " Nophi has grown considerably since the early 2000s, and was voted "Best Record Label (Readers Choice) in 2009 by Creative Loafing Atlanta. Garcia's festival counterpart to Nophi Recordings, known as Nophest, is gearing up for its sixth year. This self-proclaimed "non-corporate, no bullshit festival," has evolved into Atlanta's "largest independent local music festival." Planning for this year's edition of Nophest has already begun. After taking in all of this information about Randy Garcia's involvement with the greater music industry, I felt compelled to throw a few questions at him. He graciously replied, and the full content of his answers can be found below:

Q. Talk about Nophest and it's philosophy. How long have you been running this?

A. Nophest has been happening for six years now. The festival was originally held over Thanksgiving weekend, but after two years of that, it was decided that the late Atlanta summer is much more hospitable to music festivals. I'd like to think that the philosophy is more like that of an informal party than a structured event. There is definitely hard work and planning involved -- but ultimately I try to have as much fun and be as relaxed as possible about the entire process. The music business can be really stressful, and so to alleviate that stress, I try to make everything really informal and easy. During the booking and planning stages, I try to focus my energy on finding great bands and listening to as much new music as I can. Nothing makes me happier than booking a criminally overlooked band or giving a new band their first gig at Nophest. During the event, I run around like crazy and drink lots of cheap beer to keep my head from exploding from worry!

Q. You've been working on a DIY platform for over a decade. You're obviously really passionate...What keeps you going when you have those moments where you think that everything you're doing is pointless?

A. I've tried to quit music so many times. I might go months without picking up an instrument or finishing a song. Sometimes I hear a record or live performance that just blows my mind -- and I feel like throwing all my gear in the trash and hanging up all of my aspirations. I might go home and feel sorry for myself for a bit, until I remember that I'm not really chasing a dream -- I'm actually living my dream. I've no desire for fame or material excess, nor any interest in a life without complete control over my privacy and artistic vision. I've no desire to compete with other musicians, and I have no problem making my own way when the business of music becomes inhibiting or archaic, as it often does. I'm not tied to any third parties. I don't have a manager or a lawyer. What keeps me going is freedom. It's the most important ingredient in my music and lifestyle.

Q. What do you think is so awesome about the Atlanta/Georgia music community?

A. Atlanta has so much music, art, film and diversity of expression compared to other places I've lived. I think it's awesome that the best artists in this town aren't concerned with scene politics or what the local rags say about them. I think it's awesome that the large majority of people I know through the music scene are the people I would be most prone to hang out with on days off. Most importantly: we really do have an equally vibrant and functional community in Atlanta.

Not Done Melting Faces

After ten years of playing music together, popular Long Island band Exemption will be disbanding this month, with the members shifting focus to other musical endeavors.

This week, Long Island three-piece band Exemption announced that they will be splitting up. Now, musical alliances come and go, so news that a group of rockers is disbanding is nothing shocking; however, hearing that news from a group such as Exemption is enough to jar - if only slightly - even the most jaded of those who've gotten to know them. Guitarist Nick Lee had these words to share with the band's friends:

At the end of the day, we remained the band we were for as long as we did because of the love and support we got from our close friends, families, and fans who genuinely took interest in our music. Without the love we received from you all over the years, I don’t think we would have made it this far. Exemption’s music belongs to you as much as it belongs to us and we could never thank you enough for everyone’s individual help and support. I couldn’t imagine creating a list of people to thank at this point. There are just way too many people and bands that have lent us their ears or their companionship. You know who you are and we know who you are and we love you and thank you from the grimy bottom of our black hearts. We will keep everyone updated on the progress of our new music...we are not done melting faces by a long shot.

Long Island's music scene has, as of late, developed a large scale reputation as being a sort of "has been." Since 2003, Nick Lee, Raymond Marte and Thomas Moran have been pumping out energetic, skilled music that puts the validity of such a negative designation into question. On stage, they unleash a hard rocking, manic excitement, while still managing to exude the warmth of their off stage personalities. Their efforts as a team have lead them to numerous grassroots achievements. They've developed a devoted local following, gone on a number of tours, released three albums, were recently featured as Deli NYC's "Band of the Month" and will be making an appearance in a live film currently being compiled by Centerville Studios. Might I add that, at the end of this ten year span of togetherness, the three members are all still in their early twenties.

The live photographs of them seen here are from Vision Through Sound's Tenth Anniversary show this past June. If you would like to see these guys live one last time, they will be playing with Daikaiju at Brooklyn's The Charleston on March 10th. Exemption, you guys are awesome. You will obviously be missed.
