Many of us were not able to figure out what cities some of the letters were representing. Today the mystery is finally solved! Eddie Taylor is the font creator and while doing a search on the web, he found my blog. He left a comment and explained what each letter was for:

So now we know. :-) And honestly, I am so glad that he stopped by because I would never have guessed that K was for Kuwait or X was for Xian.

Easy Butterfly Lever Cards {using washi tape}

I had been cutting various bags and boxes from the Great Gift Giving bundle and this post was supposed to be about the Gift Giving Baskets Cut Its. In fact, I started cutting out the chevron basket the other day.

The project came to a pause when I couldn't bring myself to clear the mat. The negatives look so pretty I had to save them and use the chevrons for something else.

Previously I had used contact paper to save my negatives but since I stocked up on those Target "washi tape", I decided to use them instead.

The paper tape worked really well holding the negatives together. I stick everything onto a sheet of white cardstock before concluding that I would use some of the chevrons right then and there.

The good folks on Facebook gave me plenty of suggestions on what to do with the negatives and after pondering for a little bit, I decided to use them on a card (of course! lol.).

I had every intention on finishing my basket and I did not want to spend too long on this distraction. I knew that the lever cards would be a quick project so I went ahead and cut out two of the butterfly ones. Paired with some vellum and printed washi tape, this is what I ended up with:

I made a slight adjustment to the lever card template and shifted the butterfly higher so that there is more room below it to place the chevrons. I cut out the butterflies with heavy-weight vellum and embossed one with a Sizzix embossing folder.

I was looking for something to go with the grey chevrons when I found my yellow chevron and "handmade with love" washi tape. I though they went well with the yellow butterflies.

It is not my usual style to add stitched lines to my cards but in this case, I added them as it seemed to go with that "handmade" notion.

To make the grey chevron card, I glued down the chevrons, cut a flag shape out of the "with love" part of the paper tape, and adhered that onto the card.

To finish the cards, I rounded the corners of the cards with my corner chomper.

Playtime Treehouse

I posted a couple of pictures of the Playtime Treehouse recently and some of you have asked about the embossing that I did on it.

Even though I've already answered those questions privately (and on my Facebook page), I thought I would post the info here for the rest of you. I used Tim Holtz embossing folders to add textures to the tree top and the trunk.

I'm not sure if the folders are sold separately but they were each bundled with another folder when I bought them. I've attached the links below so you can see how they look like. If you know of any place(s) that sell them separately, please let me know and I'll update this post. Thanks!

Jin's (modified) Cupcake Lever Card {tutorial inside}

So, having showed you how to use the LD Accordian Lever Cards Cut Its (if you missed it, the tutorial is HERE), I thought I would show you how I modified mine to increase the cute factor.

Besides rounding the corners, did anyone notice that I also added an extra layer on the card front?

Here, let me show you how I did it using Silhouette Studio:

1. Using the layer for the card front....

... I used the rectangle tool and drew a rectangle over the cupcake.

Set the rectangle aside.

2. Select the card base, right-click, and Release Compound Path to separate the cupcake from the card layer.

3. Delete away the card front and the score lines, leaving only the cupcake and the rectangle from Step 1 on the mat.

4. Make a 0.125" offset of the cupcake.

5. Use the Align tool and center the offset with the rectangle.

6. Right-click, Make Compound Path.

7. Delete away the cupcake and it's done! :)

Now all that is left on the mat is the new layer for the card front that you can use to make a cute card even more adorable!

To finish my card, I adhered the new layer onto the card front and trimmed the top and bottom of the card so that the patterned paper is lined up with the solid base. I also used a corner chomper to round the corners.

Tutorial: How to make LD's Accordian Lever Cards (Flip card)

LD 's Accordian Lever Cards are similar to the common flipcards or swing cards. When the card is opened, the main image from the card front will flip to the inside. Included in the Great Gift Giving Bundle that LD recently released, is a set of 10 flipcards (Accordian Lever Cards Cut Its) and in today's tutorial I am going to show you how to put together the first card. You should be able to follow the same instructions to assemble the other cards in the set as they all work the way.

1. Cut out all the layers.

2. Follow the score line to fold the card front.

3. On the inside layer, follow the score lines and mountain-fold in the center.

4. Valley-fold the two sides as pictured below. Do not crease the cupcake.

5. This is how it should look like folded.

6. Line the cupcake over the negative cut in the card front.

7. Using your choice of adhesive (I used a tape roller), adhere the left section of the inside layer to the card front.

8. Press down to adhere both sides firmly.

9. This is how the card front should look like at this point:

10. Next, adhere the right sides of the card together.

11. Personally, I find that it is easiest to adhere the two layers by first folding down the inside (darker layer), and followed by pressing the outer layer down on it.

12. When the card is opened, this is how it should look like inside:

14. Set the prepared card base aside and assemble the cupcake.

15. Adhere the cupcake onto the card front and the card is done!

16. When the card is opened, the cupcake will flip or swing to the inside.

Jin's Sweet Cherry Pie photocards

I loved the sheep photocards that I made back in February, and I've always intended to make more with the other photos that I've taken, but it seems like I never have the time for it. If you follow my blog, you may notice that I move on to a new project very quickly. There are so many fun images in every LD set and I want to use as many of them as possible. In fact, I once told LD that I wish I could cut out every single one of their SVGs but alas! life gets in the way and there never seem to be enough time in a day to make more than a card, much less cut out every image in an LD set.

LD released their Great Gift Giving bundle the other day and I love love LOVE everything in it. I was especially excited to see that they included several Cut Its that I have been waiting for, like the Bowl Full of Cherries.

I cut out the cherry pie at the first opportunity that I got, and even though I have mixed feelings that the cherry is a totally separate cut from the pie (the base layer excludes the cherry so that the stem is just a thin layer and it can rip easily), I liked the whole assembled piece a lot. I even applied Glossy Accents to the cherry to give it more dimension and some shine.

I took several pictures of the pie and posted one on my Facebook page. And then it hit me. I could use that picture to make photocards!

Using Silhouette Studio (Designer Edition), I imported the photo and used it to fill a rounded-corner rectangle. I also used a pattern from the co-ordinating paper pack to frame it. I thought it turned out adorable!

I really need to go through my stash of photos and make photocards out of them. In fact, I may even use Silhouette Studio to make family photocards. The more I play with Silhouette Studio, the more I discover that I can make so much more than the typical card with the program. I still have a lot to learn and yet they keep updating the software and adding more features! Can't wait to see what else I can make with it. :-)

Superhero Mom

Here's a card that I've wanted to make since LD released their Superhero collection back in early April. Have you ever seen an image and knew exactly what you want to do with it? That was me when I saw the Superheros but then Spring Break, and school, and home stuff, etc. got in the way and I never got around to it.

Yesterday, it dawned upon me that Mother's Day is this weekend. I figured I'd better get this card out of my system before I have to wait another year to share it with you.

Today's project is another double-sided, print-and-cut, hybrid card. I call it a "hybrid" because I used both print-and-cut, AND traditional paper-piecing methods to make it.

The kids are getting pretty excited about this Sunday. They already have it all planned out! I overheard the three when they were discussing what to do the other day and it seems like I will not be allowed to get out of bed until they shower me with their surprises. I think it is going to involve some presents (that they are making themselves), and breakfast (which they will get Daddy to help them with), and I thought I heard that they will also be making my bed.

Methinks Daddy is going to end up doing everything. 'Guess I'd better get started on a Super Dad card for him today.

It's Teacher's Appreciation Week and I'm a slacker mom. :P

I have been basking in the sun since it showed up late last week. So much so that I forgot all about the kids' teachers.

Monday morning came and all of a sudden, I realized that I have gift cards but no card card to give away with. Oopsie...

The girls left for school assuring me that they will make the cards for the teachers themselves when they return. "For sure!"

Uhh....huh. Riiiight.

'think I'd better get some backups done. You know, just in case.

LD released the Playtime graphic set without releasing the Cut Its version and even though they posted on Facebook that it's coming, I've not seen it yet. That wasn't going to stop me from using the image that I want though. Armed with my MTC and Sil Studio, I decided to print-and-cut the card out.

Tracing the image was a breeze until I realize that SSDE cannot "see" the white sock. So I ended up using Make-the-Cut to trace the image and SSDE to print-and-cut it out. Thank goodness for MTC's Alpha-Tracing. It worked perfectly!

It's Monday night and the kiddos are fast asleep. Guess who watched TV and went outside to play, and didn't make cards for their teachers like they said they would?

Video Tutorial for Beginners: How to cut an LD SVG with Silhouette Studio Designer Edition

If you are new to LD and Silhouette Studio, today's tutorial is for you! I made this specifically for those of you who have not used an LD SVG with your Silhouette machine before. You will need the Designer Edition Upgrade for your Silhouette Studio program in order to follow today's tutorial because the free Silhouette Studio program that came with your Silhouette machine cannot import SVGs.

For today's demonstration, I will be using my Silhouette Cameo with the LD Slumber Party Cut It set. All of LD's Cut Its include the image in several formats (.ai, .dxf, .eps, .gsd, .svg) and I will be using the .svg file.

In Silhouette Studio (Designer Edition), you can bring the image onto the virtual mat by using the File>Open commands but I like to drag and drop the file onto the mat.

Before you can separate the layers, you need to Ungroup the image. Just right-click, Ungroup or you can use CTRL+U.

Next, drag the layers out to separate them.

Before sending them to the Cameo to cut, make sure that the cutting lines are turned on. Just select all the layers by using CTRL+A, open the Cut Style Window and select Cut.

Now click on the Send to Silhouette button.

Place your papers onto the cutting mat and make sure that the LCD screen on the machine shows that Load Cutting Mat is selected. Press the Enter button on the machine to load the mat into the cutter.

From your Silhouette Studio program, choose the appropriate settings (Speed, Thickness) for the type of paper that you are cutting and click CUT. The Silhouette Cameo will begin cutting.

Once the Cameo has finished cutting, unload the mat by pressing the Enter button on the machine.

Carefully remove the cutouts from the mat.

Adhere the layers together with the adhesive of your choice.

You can use your finished piece for your crafty projects. I used mine to make this:

Butterfly from LD's Butterflies and Blossoms

It's Spring Break! The weather is wet and icky but I am hoping for drier days. I want to go outside to play!

I can't believe that there are less than 40 days of school left. It feels like it was only yesterday that I was whining about being alone at home and I even made a card for the occasion! (Click here to see the card). How is it possible that the school year is almost over? Looking back, we have done quite a bit this year and the girls have learned so much! Besides the usual curriculum, they have been excited to participate in many after-school programs. The twins also recently participated in the Science Fair. Twin A did an experiment with melting crayons while Twin B grew rock candy.

Twin A's project was inspired by the popular melted crayons art and while Twin B didn't actually send in a report for the fair, she had a blast doing her candy experiment and watching the crystal grow. If you have not made rock candy before, just click HERE for the instructions.

Well, that's enough chatter about the kiddies for now. Let's talk LD, shall we?

Video Tutorial: How to Print-and-Cut the LD Flower Party Pinwheels with Silhouette Studio

One of the files in this month's LD bonus freebies is the Flower Party Pinwheels. It is basically a printable with 6 mini pinwheels that the user is supposed to cut by hand.

I printed the PDF file and after cutting one pinwheel out with my scissors, I decided to trace the entire thing with my Silhouette Studio and get the Cameo to cut. Besides the printable PDF, the file also came with the colored images in the PNG format. Perfect for tracing!

By using only the cutting lines, I could cut any size pinwheels and with any cardstock that I have.

Here is a 5" pinwheel that was cut out from a pattern paper:

Due to the length of this post (and video), I will not be showing how I put the pinwheels together but the printable PDF that comes with the file includes the assembly instructions. It is pretty straightforward- just fold and align all the corners with the holes together and secure with a brad.

The pinwheel cupcake topper measures less than 2.5" wide and I secured the corners with a button and clear thread. I hot-glued the pinwheel to a cakepop stick but you could probably use a toothpick too.

These pinwheel cupcake toppers are very fun to make and I hope that you will give my tutorial a try and print-and-cut some of these out. It's a lot faster than cutting out by hand!
