Fatboy Slim Live in Manila 2013 Concert Review

October 10, 2013 or technically October 11, 2013 at 1 A.M., Norman Cook a.k.a. Fatboy Slim pushed the tempo at the Republiq Club in Resorts World Manila!

One of the most sought-after DJs in the late 90's and beyond, it’s a dream come true to see and hear Fatboy Slim play in front on me. Seeing one fourth of the great new wave band the Housemartins is definitely a bliss! Flashbacks of my highschool days accompanied by blinker lights did help to condition myself for 2 hours of non-stop dancing to Fatboy Slim's house/electornica beats.

James Harden and Eric Gordon @ NBA 3X

It's gonna be a superb NBA off season for the Philippines! And another James will be visiting the town.

After witnessing NBA Champion LeBron James, Filipinos will be thrilled again by the arrival of James Harden of the Houston Rockets and Eric Gordon of the New Orleans Pelicans this July 27, 2013 for the NBA 3X at the Mall of Asia.

As a Houston Rockets fan since the Yao Ming-Tracy Mcgrady era, Ron Arrest-Aaron Brooks days, and to the current Beardsanity-Linsanity connection, I would say it would be a great treat for all local Houston Rockets fans out there to see James Harden for the second time around since the Smart All Star Weekend 2 years ago.

I'm a fan since his demolishing of the Spurs from the 2011-2012 playoffs (even though I am a big Manu fan) and winning the 6th Man of the Year honors as a Thunder. Then he was traded to the Rockets to become their franchise player. I was really satisfied that they were able to reach the play offs as the youngest team assembled from last season with only one player left from the previous roster: Chandler Parsons. Harden became also an All Star and was on the top 5 on the NBA scoring list as a first time Rocket last year. And with the addition of Dwight Howard, the Rockets are one of the teams to look out for on the Western Conference.

The newly renamed New Orleans Pelicans also got a bright future with its franchise player Eric Gordon. After being sidelined with injuries from last season, Eric was able to finish the season strong. And with the acquisition of Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans, plus mainstays Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson, they had become the most intriguing youngest line up for the next season.

Having these two NBA stars gracing this year's NBA 3 on 3 compition would definitely inspire the participants to strive and win it all on the tournament.

Lebron James Manila Tour

NBA Superstar Champion LeBron James will be arriving in Manila for his one day tour tomorrow, July 23, 2013.

This would be the first time that LeBron James will be visiting Manila since his NBA debut 10 years ago. He just recently won MVP, finals MVP and a championship ring from the last NBA season with the Miami Heat. And I believe it would be like a finals celebration tomorrow at the MOA Arena based from the long free ticket line give away by Nike in their Fort Bonifacio High Street branch a few days ago. I hope this would be the start of his regular trips to the Philippines.

Rejoice indie and true hipster kids!!

UK indie rock band the xx will be playing in Manila this July 30. The xx is presently composed of Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie Smith.

I am so hyped up that they will be performing here in Manila. I didn't expect that someone will be bringing them here on the height of their careers or that they considered playing here because they performed two years ago in Singapore. So there is a public clamor or just great brave souls bringing them here.

I am a big fan of the band. I discovered their music on a one lazy afternoon watching indie band music videos at Channel V Asia around August - September 2009. It was the music video of 'Basic Space.' I was intrigued by the electronica minimalist approach of the song with a 'Tracey Thorn' (Everything But the Girl) and 'Joao Gilberto' (Bossa nova singer) vocals. Few months after, I saw the 'VCR' video, I was completely sold! Then I got hold of their first album. Kaboom! I was instantly hooked. The first song of their debut album 'Intro' sent shivers down to my spines. Their album spent almost 2 years on my music player and was on heavy airplay. Their live concert performance podcast for NPR.com is a favorite. The 'Sampha' remix of 'Basic Space' was the best remixed song on that year. They already released a second album 'Coexist' last year and still gathering massive success on their musical careers.

Now all of their songs are on repeat and heavy rotation on my music player.

Concert Review: Back To The 80s - Modern English | The Alarm

New wavers at heart were all in cloud nine after watching the Alarm and Modern English play at the Mall of Asia Arena last night, May 3, 2013.

The concert started around 9PM with front act Juan Miguel Salvador & The Authority. There was a very good mix of new wave songs in between the acts that kept the audience excited for the main bands.

About 10:23PM, the Alarm went up to the stage. Mike Peters (vocals/ guitars) was very active on the stage and asked the audience to stand up to rock out with him. Their sixth song on their setlist: "Rain in Summertime", made the crowd go run in front of the stage. Funny thing is that Mike made use of four bottled water as rain props substitute while singing the song. What a wet party, especially for those in the front! It was very timely for it is scorching hot in Manila for weeks now and it just rained in the afternoon - "Love to feel the rain in the summertime!" For those who were able to notice, that Mike somewhat sounded like Bono on some songs. After a few more songs, they played their number one hit, “Absolute Reality” into the delight of the crowd. That song was a big favorite when I was young, especially the acoustic version.

Robbie Grey of Modern English

Next is the last performer of the night: Modern English. They went straight ahead and played their post punk songs and new ones as well. Aside from singing, Robbie Grey would be a great stand up comedian and had lots of laughs on his side comments. I liked most of their songs with some dark wave feel, reminisce of Joy Division. After a couple of songs, they played one of their commercial hits "Ink and Paper." A funny moment: Robbie Grey pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket to read some lyrics for "Ink and Paper" because they had not played the song for decades, "Ink and Paper" indeed! The people went frenzy singing the chorus with Robbie. When they sang "Hands Across the Sea," the audience on the front got really excited that they sang the first verse ahead of Robbie that made him say that it is his job to sang it and not the audience. Hilarious!

Gary McDowell of Modern English

Gary McDowell's guitar works and effects were awesome, reminds me of Bernard Sumner meets Tom Morello on his occasional guitar scratching. Then they played their most famous song which supposed to be their last song on their set: "Melt with You." Robbie sang the first words of the second verse on the first verse but it was forgivable. The crowd went wild and there was a big videoke in the MOA Arena. Everybody was dancing and jumping while singing the song. What an awesome performance! After they bid goodbye, people went screaming 'more' in which the band obliged with two more songs for the encore, including the stripped down, dreamy, atmospheric and weird (as what Robbie said) version of "Melt with You." It was a real treat to their fans. Robbie said that he wants to see the videos uploaded in youtube so I found some:

It was a great night for new wavers and for these 80s kids who were not fans of glam rock/ those who did not attend the other concert on the same night. It was indeed a flashback of my child hood days: vinyls, mobile discos in debuts on the streets, my sister's spray nets and the fashion of the 80s. This could be the closest thing watching U2 and Joy Division. But Modern English and the Alarm had already own a place in my music heart and it was indeed awesome to watch them perform live in this lifetime! Thank you Modern English and the Alarm!!!

"PULP SUMMERSLAM XIII 2013: TILL DEATH DO US PART"

Every year, PULP SUMMERSLAM does not fail to amaze me by bringing in amazing and interesting line up of bands here in the country. And for PULP SUMMERSLAM 2013 "Til Death Do Us Part", PULP will be bringing in Cannibal Corpse, Dragon Force, As I Lay Dying, Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive, A Sky Lit Drive, and Amoral.

These three bands are getting me hyped up:

I am excited to watch Cannibal Corpse and relive my high school metal days (and LA 105 days). I want to absorb the technical metal riffs of Dragon Force. Coheed & Cambria's Claudio Sanchez' emo rock whine would be pleasure to my ears and hope not to miss them this second time around.

I need to dig more for the music of As I Lay Dying, Circa Survive, A Sky Lit Drive and Amoral and include them on my current playlist.

Japanese math-rock band Toe will be back here in Manila on April 19, 2013, 8pm at Metrotent, Metrowalk Plaza, Meralco Avenue, Ortigas, Pasig City to promote their The Future Is Now - Release Asian Tour.

Chi Cheng (July 15, 1970 – April 13, 2013)

Deftones founding member and bassist Chi Cheng passed away last April 13, 2013.

A statement was posted on oneloveforchi.com which stated that Chi had died. The statement read:

"Our dearest Family, This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emegency room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear. He fought the good fight.You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go. With great love and “Much Respect!” Mom J (and Chi)"

Concert Review: Bloc Party Live in Manila and Setlist

Bluest Light: Bloc Party Live in Manila

Never seen myself so pumped up with the entire crowd going nuts while watching Bloc Party play in front of us!

Kele Okereke did a great job on getting the crowd get involve into their upbeat tunes and ‘getting the party started’ (just like what he said).

Besides Kele’s very kind British accent, I was amused by Matt Tong’s pounding on the drums and all his 16 beats murdering my ears with gusto! He did brought the house down with his body building pose antics, his big white towel and his incredible Hulk attire! LOL!

Russell Lissack’s mastery of guitar delays was superb and Gordon Moakes being a multi instrumentalist with his bass hooks and glockenspiel playing!

The concert was well attended with a very long line infront of World Trade Center. It started at exactly 8PM with the unbelievable homegrown band Up Dharma Down. I believe they played around 4-5 songs with the highlight of their new album carrier single “Turn It Well. “ It was fun to see Armi Millare dancing and also lovely to hear some haunting vocal effects on top of her already majestic singing. Nice use of technology!

And after a 30 minute break, it’s the main event! Bloc Party started their set by 9:05PM and finished around 10:30PM. A good deal for a 20 song concert considering alt punk songs are relatively short even if they had 2 encores.

The audience went pandemonium when they played their first single and most popular song ‘Banquet ‘. Everyone sang and jumped with excitement!

One of the highlights of the show: when Kele did a cover of ‘We Found Love’ by Rihanna on the intro of their song ‘Flux.’ I know they are doing this already since last year but it is could have been good if Kele wore the Nirvana smiley face inspired Rihanna Shirt.

I think this is the first time I saw a concert with two encores. Maybe this is their way to have the crowd to be more Bloc Party blood thirsty. Quite a bummer that they don’t play “Pioneers” on this tour and dropped “Like Eating Glass” on their Manila set list but was really happy that they played “This Modern Love.”

CONCERT REVIEW: Motion City Soundtrack in Manila!

Motion City Soundtrack was on fire and busted their moves at the SM North Edsa Skydome last March 9, 2013!

I got flashbacks of my college days while watching the band play infront of my eyes.

I was amazed that most of the attendees were high school and college kids singing their hearts out with most of the songs of the band.

Justin Pierre still sports that Eraserhead/ Robert Smith hairdo and was doing some stand up comedy monologues in between some songs. He was also a beneficiary of troll stuff toy thrown by a fan directly at this body. He was happy that the toy looked like him and decided to hang it on his mic stand.

The band performed minutes before 9 PM and finished around 10:05.

It was a fast concert but they were able to dish out 19 songs. Check out the concert set list below:

MCS were appreciative of the tight crowd and said that it was one of the loudest concert crowds that they have encountered.

I was just annoyed with those 2 kids using their Ipads to video the band because it really blocked my view. A crumpled paper could have been handy. LOL.

The concert was a pure bliss of emo-pop punk experience for me and its good to see these kids enjoying the show as well.

Eight years ago, they were touted by music critics as the new 'The Clash' / 'Gang of Four' prototype band of this generation. But I believe that they have already carved out their own names in music history.

British Indie Rock band Bloc Party will be performing in the Philippines for the first time this March 22, 2013, 8PM at the World Trade Center Hall D, Pasay City.

The band is composed of Kele Okereke on vocals/guitar, Russell Lissack on lead guitar, Gordon Moakes on bass guitar and

Grimes Live in Manila!!!

My Bloody Valentine returns with a new album after 22 years!!!

My favorite band, My Bloody Valentine, has released their 3^rd album last February 2, 2013, surprising all of their fans (including me) after 22 years from the last record album “Loveless.”

The new album is simply titled ‘m b v’ and you can purchase them thru digital downloads from their website: mybloodyvalentine.org . You can also order CDs and Vinyls on their website.

I was able to browse all of their new stuff via their Youtube account: OfficialMBV. They have posted all of the songs from the new album on Youtube which is a very cool move by MBV.

I almost cried hearing them once again specially with the radio friendly tune: “New You.” I already finishing my album review on the album and I’ll just post it when I am thoroughly done.

I discovered MBV in the year 2000 when my friend from Tower Records handed me a copy of their EP “You Made Me Realise” and I was instantly hooked. I love the lush angelic vocals of Bilinda Butcher and the sonic guitars of Kevin Shields.

And I am really excited that they will play in Taipei on February 13, 2013 which is like an hour away from Manila. I really do hope I’ll be able to watch them SOON.

BLUE ZOO live in MANILA!!!

The British new wave band Blue Zoo will be performing in Manila tomorrow, February 8, 2013, 8PM at the Hard Rock Cafe in Glorietta, Makati.City and on February 9, 2013 at Thunderbird Resorts, Eastridge Avenue, Binangonan, Rizal.

Blue Zoo was formed in 1980 and is comprised of the following band members:

The audio quality is a treat and I could imagine Thom Yorke singing and performing in front of me. I really do enjoy Radiohead live and I've been listening for 3 years on one of their live performance uploaded online at NPR.com. It's their concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Aug. 28, 2008. And with this much older Bonnaroo recording, its a welcome addition for my collection. The Bonnaroo upload just reminded me of the much legal NPR release.

Who's your Daddy? The Zombies live in Manila!!!

For almost 3 years, I thought that the song “Time of the Season” was a song by The Byrds, as part of the mixtape done by Travis Barker (Blink 182) and DJ AM (Crazy Town) in which was in heavy rotation on my Ipod. And two months ago, I was just enlightened that it was the English band The Zombies, who created that song! (The Byrds song is Turn, Turn, Turn and I got it all mixed up.)

Last Oct 19, 2012, a piece of music history unfolded in front of my eyes and fulfilled my ears with joy as I witnessed The Zombies performed live here in the Philippines at the PICC Hall in Pasay City!

The original members of the Zombies: Colin Blunstone on vocals and Rod Argent on keyboards were accompanied by this talented line up: Jim Rodford on bass (The Kinks founding member, also played for the Animals), his son Steve Rodford on drums and Tom Toomey on guitars.

They jump started the show with one of their hits: “Sticks and Stones” and the crowd was pumped up. I was surprised that they played “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” in which I was accustomed with the Beatles version. I just learned that it was a Smokey Robinson original.

Colin Blunstone said that they first played in the Philippines last 1967. That was 3 years after their first recorded hit “She’s Not There” and a year before they released their seminal album “Odessey and Oracle” and then calling it quits. Colin said that the band was originally formed in 1961 and they just celebrated their 50^th anniversary last year.

I was amazed that these 60s bands, the Beatles and the Zombies, went in the Philippines at their prime and how lucky were those able to watch their shows then.

It was also a night of music history class and trivia. Rod said that their album “Odessey and Oracle” which was recorded in 1967 and released a year later, didn’t sell well on its debut. “Then 12 years later it gradually picked up speed, momentum and sense. It sells more every year now than it ever did when it first came out. (F*ck), it was a strange story,” Rod said. He also quoted that Paul Weller’s (The Jam, Style Council) favourite album of all time is “Odessey and Oracle,” Dave Grohl’s (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) favourite song was the first tune from that album “Care of Cell 44.” He also mentioned that the Foo Fighters recorded the song “This Will Be Our Year” on their last album. Rod mentioned that he was happy for all the recognition the band was getting from new and upcoming bands in the US and UK like the Vaccines, etc. Then after that music lecture, they played the classic “Time of the Season.”

The Zombies also played a ballad tune titled “Miles Away” which he said a crowd favourite and a hit in the Philippines. The audience was very elated while Colin sang it. I was moved by the song “Hold Your Head Up” with its stomping rock arrangements and the keyboard/Mellotron wizardry of Rod Argent.

Jim said that it was his 2^nd time in Manila but it was already the 3^rd time that the Zombies performed in the Philippines. They just played at Cebu Waterfront last October 19.

Rod also promoted their website: thezombies.net . ”But make sure you put in thezombies.net. If you just put in zombies dot net, I won’t be responsible for what you might see,” drawing laughter from the audience.

The Zombies ended their set with the smash hit: “She’s Not There” but came back with an encore of two songs: Summertime (My Dad’s favourite Zombies song) and How We Were Before.

It was my first time to watch a 60’s era band and I was blown away! Colin still got his voice and still manages to remember every lyrics compared to other 80s new wave bands whose vocalists need some lyric sheets! I checked that there were no teleprompters in front of the stage. Collin is a tall guy and looks classy on the stage. Rod was very energetic and magnificent on his Mellotron playing skills (somewhat reminds me of the keyboardist Ray Manzarek of the Doors or isn’t it Ray got his skills from Rod?). Based from what I saw, Rod is the musical director of the band and the driving force behind the Zombies. And I cannot believe that I also saw ¼ of the band The Kinks in the presence of Jim Rodford. It was indeed an awesome night! What I also observed is that they extended their songs from the original 2 minute song to a 5 minute jam. They did that by incorporating mellotron adlibs in the middle of the song.

It was my second time inside PICC and I was glad that the building still looks great inside out. The concert was well attended and notable guests included former First Lady Imelda Marcos (whom got a special mention from Colin), former chief Justice Renato Corona, and sports analysist Quinito Henson.

Watching the Zombies live was a great nostalgic night for all music lovers, old and young. I was amazed that there were teenagers or young yuppies attended the concert and reacted when Dave Grohl’s name was mentioned by Rod. I hope they come back and play for the 4^th time before the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar! (For now, I need to watch the Walking Dead’s season 3 episodes for some zombie lovin' action!)

Cruising Ventura Hi-way: AMERICA with KALAPANA (Manila 2012)

It was a nostalgic night for all hippie dads and moms, lovebirds, and early 90s kids to see and watch the bands America and Kalapana live in the Smart Araneta Coliseum last October 17, 2012.

The concert started around 8PM with supporting band, Hawaii’s Kalapana. The band played their hits like “Night Bird” and of course their smash hit “The Hurt”. “The Hurt” was big then in Philippine radio in the early 90’s especially when it was done with a disco remix version and had it played in clubs like Faces; or on a mobile disco of an 18^th year old girl’s debut street party. Sadly, their original vocalist Mackey Feary already passed away but his legacy and music still lives on. I got their best of CD in which I wished they could have it signed. They played a 40 minute set with their Hawaiian chill jazz music to the delight of the crowd.

America (circa ealy 1980s)

Then the main act of the night: America. The London England formed classic folk rock band is led by two of its original members Gerry Beckly (vocals, guitars, keyboards, harmonica, and bass) and Dewey Bunnell (vocals, guitars) with sessionist Richard Campbell on bass, Michael Woods on lead guitars and long-time drummer Willie Leacox. Original member Dan Peek quit the group in 1977.

The stage showed a big screen on the background with the band name logo on it and their album covers. America showed up on stage around 9:30PM and started with one of their hits ‘Tin Man’ (in reference to Tin Woodman from the Wizard of Oz) followed by ‘You Can Do Magic.’ They also played classics ‘I Need You’, ‘Inspector Mills ‘, ‘Sandman ‘and my personal favourite ‘Ventura Hi-way.’

I was surprised that they played some cover songs like ‘Woodstock’ by Joni Mitchell, ‘California Dreamin’ by Mamas & the Papas but the highlight of that night was their rendition of ‘Til I Hear It From You’ by the Gin Blossoms. Gerry Beckly said that ‘Til I Hear It From You’ is one of the songs they wished they had written before.

“It’s always a pleasure to see Manila on the list, the Philippines in general,” said Dewey.

Gerry: “We love Manila. If you want to follow where in the world we are touring, go to our website which is venturahiway.com. Don’t whatever you do google ‘America’, it does not work” drawing laughter from the audience. He also said that they perform 100 shows each year for 42 years in which I and the crowd were quite stunned. He said it while Dewey was doing some funny trembling knees at the background. They ended their set with ‘Sister Golden Hair. ‘

They came back to do their encore with a Filipino love song favourite which was made into a movie title – ‘All My Life’ and ending the night with their hippie smash hit - ‘A Horse With No Name.’

It is not the first time for America and Kalapana to play here in Manila and they really love to come play here. They went on to finish their Philippine tour in the following venues: Waterfront Hotel Cebu (October 19) and University of Baguio (October 21).

The overall reception of the crowd was very good. The concert was well attended. It also has high profile attendees like our President Benigno Aquino III and his nemesis, former Chief Justice Renato Corona. DILG Secretary Mar Roxas and other high ranking government officials were present.

Well, this event served like a ‘Tatay Rock’ flashback years for me when I was a kid because it reminded me of the time I was playing my Dad’s record collection like ‘America’, ‘The Doors’, etc., and learning to play guitars using old songhits. It could have been a more feel-good night if I had a cold San Mig light beer at hand but nonetheless I had a great time!
