Microphones!

There are two basic types of microphones: dynamic mics and condenser mics. Here are the main differences between them. Dynamic mics are more rugged than condensers making them more suitable for onstage use. Condensers are more sensitive and more delicate, and are most often used for studio recording.

If you are new to recording, you are most likely seeking an all-purpose mic rather than one that is specialized in some way. If so, look for mics described as general use or that have a long list of instruments that they record well. Large-diaphragm condenser mics are an especially versatile class. They are used for voices, for a range of instruments, for close miking, and for overhead or area applications.

Dynamic microphones

They tend to be used for live sound applications, for vocals and instruments, and some are also used for recording. The Shure SM57 has been both a studio and stage staple for many years. As a group, dynamic mics are relatively affordable, and many of the big-name mic manufacturers have economy series mics that give you great performance for a low price.

There are a lot of ways to learn how to record music on the internet. I would say one of the best ones is youtube. There is a lot of people that with a very low budget have achieved an amazing brutal tone!

"Personal" Audio Interfaces!

So an Audio Interface is a software that is used to generate sound. Here we are going to focus on two types of audio interfaces: PCI Cards and USB connection. When I say "Personal" Audio Interfaces, I mean interfaces for recording yourself playing @home.

A PCI card is a hardware circuit card that goes inside your desktop computer. PCI cards have one particular strength that makes them a favorite: they have extremely low latency (because they are directly connected into your computer). Latency is the amount of delay that occurs when playing through an interface into a computer. One of the weaknesses is that you will most likely have to purchase either a mixer or an audio I/O interface to use as the front end for your PCI card, unless you can purchase a PCI card that has the exact connections you need.

Now lets talk about USB connection audio interfaces.

Mobility and simplicity is one of the principle reasons for selecting a USB box over a PCI card. Latency (amount of delay that occurs when playing through an interface into a computer) is practically a non-issue because of the rapid increasing engineering technology, so don't worry about it when selecting a USB audio interface. USB is hot swappable and plug-and-play, so you can simply unplug the interface and go whenever and wherever you want with it without having to shut down and restart your computer. All these features make USB especially nice for musicians with laptops.

Reference monitors!

If there is something you will need to buy in order to have a good home studio is your reference monitors. You will need to spend a reasonable amount of money (not $500) since a good set of monitors will let you hear what you record with precise and accurate detail. You also will need to take into consideration what you want to record. For instance, if you only want to record yourself playing and singing songs, probably a medium-size set of desktop monitor will be good for you, but if you are more into hip-hop, you will definitely need a sub woofer. Now let me give you some products that I think will fit into the @home music creation section.

Let me first of all introduce myself. My name is Diego Castillo and I'm from Panama. I really enjoy listening to any type of music, and since a year or maybe less, I have came up with this passion of home recording. Because of that I have decided to create this blog, where I am going to post anything new that I learn (which will be a lot), and any news that we as beginners should now about recording.
