"Rap artist" Trinidad James admits to being a new artist with very little experience. He speaks candidly about having less than a years worth of experience. Trinidad James managed to quickly fly past his rap counterparts and literally become an overnight success. How does this make you feel as an artist who has struggled and dedicated years to refining your craft???

Phillis Wheatley 1753-1784

Phillis Wheatley was one of the first "African-American" poets and women to have her work published. At the age of 7 she was taken from Africa and brought to America where she was sold into slavery. Phillis Wheatley lived a life more fortunate than other slaves; shortly after her arrival to the U.S. she learned English and spoke so eloquently it astonished others.

Phillis Wheatley was allowed by her owners the Wheatley's to study Latin and English Literature, this literary exposure allowed her to develop into a great writer!

"Phillis's place was designated by her white world, and she was virtually cut off from her own people, but she was definitely still a slave, although a privileged one. Though superior to most in her intellectual and literary accomplishments, she was clearly never their social equal."-vcu

"On Being Brought from Africa to America" by Phillis Wheatley
Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand
That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
"Their colour is a diabolic dye."
Remember, Christians, Negroes, black as Cain,
May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.

This is one of the many controversial pieces written by the once enslaved poet, who seemed to praise slavery because it led her to Christianity. Despite the critical debate about the writer's loyalty and literary content... Phillis Wheatley was an astonishing African writer who paved the way for other minority writers.

NYPD's Stop and Frisk Stats

2013-02-06T06:23:00.001-05:00

The recently released NYPD "Stop and Frisk" policy stats are completely alarming! It is reported that 9 out of 10 people that were "stopped and Frisked"in 2011 were African American or Hispanic! In 2011 there were close to 700,000 stops reported by police that year.

"The data comes from a report released by the NYPD Monday, which showed that of the 685,724 stops made by police that year, 53% of those questioned were black, 34% were Latino, 9% were white and 3% were Asian... The citywide population in 2011 was 23.4% black, 29.4% Hispanic, 12.9% Asian, and 34.3% non-Hispanic white, according to the report."- CNN

These numbers are unbelievable!! These numbers also bring the major problem of racial profiling to the fore front!! Racial profiling is illegal and unjust tactic that should not be used when stopping an individual that looks "suspicious".

The Stop and Frisk policy is a strategy originally created to decrease crime in many of our communities. The top reasons for stop and frisk encounters are to check for weapon possession.
According to Police Commissioner Kelly all stop and frisk encounters are reported by police and they are meant to "increase public confidence". Whose confidence??

"The city’s reliance on stop and frisk has come under intense scrutiny and legal challenges. Critics say that the police unfairly target black and Hispanic young men, who have made up 85 percent of those stopped."- The New York Times

I am writing this story in response to my son's homework assignment tonight. The assignment talked about the NYPD's Stop and frisk policy and how the very same policy might affect him. This homework assignment really stimulated plenty of thoughts in my mind and really messed with my emotions. I am strongly against any policy that would discourage or diminish the confidence, pride or dignity of an individual by violating his or her personal space and constitutional rights!! This policy profiles people based on race and sends a negative message to the community! It also encourages racism by stereotyping a particular group and labeling them as "suspicious"!! What do suspicious people look like??? What do criminals look like??

I do not want my son followed around a store or targeted on the streets because he fits the description of a "suspicious" individual! I dedicate this blog to my son who is a Black and Hispanic male growing up in the heart of New York City. *I Love you Jay!*

One Time for your Mind!! - I am not bashing all police officers! I understand that their job is not easy. But we need to regulate this policies today!! Please check out this very thought provoking cartoon and tell me what you think. Remember stand for something or fall for anything!!

Thank you for reading...

Rihanna reveals new Tat and Thoughts About her relationship with Chris

2013-02-04T07:20:00.000-05:00

Hello Rihanna!! Rihanna Looks Great in this hot shot from a Rolling Stone Magazine photo shoot by Terry Richardson. If you look closely you can see that the Star Diva has added another tat to her collection of Body art! Its the classic beautiful side profile of the Egyptian Queen Nefertiti!! I like it!

Rihanna is confident about her reunion with her ex-Chris Brown and here is her take on the situation..."I decided it was more important for me to be happy...I wasn't going to let anybody's opinion get in the way of that. Even if it's a mistake, it's my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I'd rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it."- Rolling Stone Mag.

Okay Rih!! Follow your heart and we will (try to) mind our business!! Be Happy!

Freeway Ricky Ross gives a word of advice 2 Rick Ross

2013-01-30T07:28:00.002-05:00

Ricky Donnell Ross AkA "Freeway" Ricky Ross, a convicted 1980's Drug King pin whose reign presided over Los Angeles, California, speaks out about the Rick Ross shooting that happened this past Monday. "Luckily he got away this time" blurted the ex King pin, who also expressed that he was thankful the rapper didn't suffer any injuries from Monday's shooting.

Freeway Rick Ross who is well known for his real life street experiences suggested for the entertainer Rick Ross to fly straight and that his embellished songs of the streets may cause him some real harm.

“In the ghetto you have to live out a certain set or rules. In the hood, they don’t go to court and sue you. They usually take it up with their fists or with guns or knives,” Freeway Ricky stated.

"The Hip-Hop industry is no longer a place one dimensional artists can't wear the business hat. Rappers are just as mainstream as anyone else when it comes to the advertising & business world. Enter the next generation of Brooklyn Hip-Hop Entrepreneurs and you will come across Sean Hampton.

Sean describes himself as an “entertainer, storyteller, motivator, griot” on his previous mixtape Brooklyn’s Griot and his efforts were reflective of the perpetual struggle between speaking about matters of urgency and catering to what will move units. He claims Hip-Hop Godfather Russell Simmons and superb mc/business icon Jay-Z as his biggest inspirations while he stakes his claim as the next best business mind with dope lines."- Bio

Word around town is Rihanna will no longer be the poster girl for Nivea Skin care! Why you ask?? Rihanna's sexy n rebellious image does not reflect that of the Nivea skin care company. The Ceo of Nivea says "Nivea is a company which stands for trust, family and reliability...Within the future brand positioning Nivea focuses more than ever on its core values. This leads to a change in advertising strategy as well as marketing campaigns," the statement continued. Well you win some and you lose some. We still love you Rihanna!!
