Metallic finishes can make any outfit pop. Wearing a lot of jewelry isn’t the only way to achieve the sparkle glam of metallics. Selecting handbags and shoes that have heavy metallic finishes are a great way to dominate your outfit with flashy glam. Metallics come in a range of finishes that match mostly every hue. A few of the most popular metalllics are gold, silver, and rose gold. And even within those colors, there is white gold and gunmetal.

One of the reasons I love the Valentino Rockstud pump is because these shoes exude sparkle. The gold rockstuds are like wearing jewelry on your feet. Because there are so many rockstuds on these shoes, they can command the attention of any outfit. Even if I wore a solid black dress, my ensemble would still have glitz and glamour because of these pumps.

I also love handbags that are dominated with heavy metallic hardware. When I first saw this Moschino handbag, I knew I have to have it. One reason is because I love clutches. Yes, I must admit I’m addicted to clutches. The second reason is because the hardware overpowers the handbag – and that I like. I can wear this clutch with any outfit and it will complement any gold metallic accessory I wear with it. Also, the metallic gold is very vibrant and commands attention.

So don’t feel that wearing jewelry in the only option to accentuate an outfit. You can shine bright like a diamond and make your outfit stand out – except a diamond isn’t necessarily needed, as metallics will also do the trick.

Can crop tops be worn over the age of 30 and 40? Absolutely!

The crop to trend has been around for a few years and is still going strong in 2016. And for those who have killer abs and don’t mind flaunting them, this trend never goes out of style. Many glam girls may feel as if they cannot wear this trend if they are not perfect in the stomach area. Some of you may feel that if you are over the age of thirty, this style should be left in your 20s. However glam girls, this is not so. There is a way to wear crop top where you can show a modest amount of skin no matter your age.

A great option to wearing a crop top and remain classy and chic is to wear it with either high waisted pants or a high waisted skirt. Pairing a crop top with either of these two options will only show a sliver of your stomach. The small area where the crop top ends and the pants or skirt begins is all that will show. This is ideal if you want to wear this style over thirty without looking like you are trying to dress like a teenager. Also since wearing all black can be slimming, opt to wear this trend with a black crop top and black bottom so that you can look chic, slim, and fabulous!

Give Blue a Break and Add Some Variety to Your Jeans

Jeans are great casual apparel to have in your wardrobe. A great pair of jeans should feel comfortable and fit you well. They should have enough stretch for you to move comfortably throughout your day or evening. Yes glam girls, you should have both daytime and nighttime jeans. If you work in an office you may want to leave your tight fitting “don’t hurt ‘em” jeans for the evening or weekends. I’m not saying you can’t be stylish at the office, but those jeans that you have to jump around in order to zip them should be reserved for the weekend.

For most jeans blue is the typical color. However there are other hues that are just as stylish. Black or gray denim are other options that can be styled in just as many ways as blue denim. To add pizzazz to your jean collection, jeans with a camouflage print can be a great way to spice up your denim wardrobe. Camouflage jeans are just as versatile as blue jeans. You can style them with a variety of color choices such as black, white, or army green. I love camouflage jeans so much that I have three pairs. The jeans shown above are skinny jeans and have black leather accents. I also have a pair of camouflage knickers with black leather and a pair without leather. I like to pair my camouflage jeans with gold accessories which accent the olive hue well. These jeans are from my favorite denim designer, B. Black Denim by Valdavia Ellis. Her jeans are specifically made to fit your curves well without flattening your bottom as with so many other brands. Now that’s what I call a win-win!

It’s Ok To Be Stylish, But Every Trend Is Not Your Friend

As we start to create our wardrobe for the upcoming season, let’s talk about fashion trends. Is it really necessary to try them all? Once we begin to comb through fashion magazines and look online at all of the new fashions trends, it can become exhausting to try and figure out which trend to wear next. There are some people who will wear every fashion trend that comes out. We have all seen them. They will wear any and every fashion trend, regardless if the trend looks good on them. When they shouldn’t, they are wearing crop tops – and it looks more like crop not! Once you are confident in your personal style you will realize that “every fashion trend is not your friend” – and that is perfectly fine. It is ok to pick up a trendy piece here and there, but if it does not complement your personal style, there is no need to force yourself to wear it.

To try and wear every fashion trend can also be a waste of money. Some trends are so fleeting that by the time you wear the trend twice it has already gone out of style. Also some fashion trends are just bad. Yes, I said it! As much as I love fashion, I can stare something in the face and admit “this is just ugly” and I don’t care who designed it or what expensive label might be on it. You can find yourself in three to six months saying, “What the heck was I thinking?”

So before you try the next fashion trend ask yourself these questions:

Is this trend really cute?
Will I wear this again in six months?
Is it really worth the money?
Does it fit my personal style?
If I could keep only 10 items from my closet, would this make the list?

If the answer to most of these questions are no, then leave that trendy piece in the store and save your money for ice cream!

Building My Fall Wardrobe Early with Sheath Dresses

Yesterday I shared that summer is not too early to start building your winter wardrobe. Summer is a great time to begin creating your wardrobe strategy for the upcoming fall and winter season. Do you plan to wear more dresses than slacks this fall? Will you wear more blouses than sweaters with your skirts? Do you want to try a new look that you have never tried? These are the types of questions you should ask yourself in the summer so that you can begin to look for specific items in preparation for fall.

One of my favorite articles of clothing that fits my personal style best is the sheath dress. This style of dress is cut in a straight shape and is form-fitting to a woman’s body. The sheath dress is one of my favorite styles in dresses because it is classic, has clean lines, and it fits my body type well.

I caught this dress on sale and immediately knew I had to have it. It is a limited edition B. Black dress from the House of Made. The dress was originally $150, but I got it on sale for only $50. Yes, a handmade dress by designer Valdavia Ellis is indeed a steal! I’m still doing my happy dance from when I purchased it in early July. The unique fabric and design of the dress is beautiful and I don’t have anything like it in my wardrobe. I plan to wear it with heels and a clutch or with knee-high leather boots and a large handbag. I’ll be sure to take a picture and put it on the blog when I wear it this fall.

Summer is not just for vacations and beaches. It’s also for doing some shopping – and lots of it. During the summer months it’s ideal to pick up practical summer clothes and accessories for the season. But it is also an ideal time to start gathering pieces for your winter wardrobe.

Many brands and retail stores have great preseason sales that begin in July and August. During these sales, you can be one of the first to have access to items at a discount before they are released to the public at regular price. For example, Nordstrom has its annual Early Access Anniversary Sale each July. However, cardholders can have access to select items at a discounted price that is lower than the price during the regular annual sale. These types of opportunities are the perfect time to take inventory of your closet and begin to take note of what you need for your winter wardrobe.

Most often a nice winter coat or winter boats are a couple of the pricier items in your wardrobe. Of course glam girls, this is outside of your designer shoes and purses. Summer is a great time to catch these items on sale. You can also have access to the best selections because by the time winter comes, many fashionistas will have snatched up all most of the stylish pieces. Glam girls we know that for some designer brands, if it comes in your size and is available, you have to purchase it right then. Turn your back to take a selfie and that item will be gone! So your homework for summer school is to start building your winter wardrobe during the summer months. Because in the words of Game of Thrones, “Winter is coming!”

Every so often it is a good idea to reward yourself with a treat. “Work hard, play hard” is a motto many people live by to reward themselves for the hard work they endure to create successful lives for themselves. If you choose to splurge on items related to fashion, make sure your splurges are investments into your wardrobe. Buying trendy pieces every now and then is fine, but you don’t want to be too trendy in your splurges as it can become just a waste of money – especially if you only wear the items once. When it comes to your personal style, it is best to reward yourself with items that you can incorporate into several outfits that will last over time.

Couture shoes and handbags are great investment pieces to include in your ensembles as you build your personal style wardrobe. High-end pieces are not only fashionable, but most often use quality materials that should last for several years.

I usually reward myself with something nice every four to six months. My most recent treats were a pair of Valentino Rockstud pumps and a Saint Laurent crossbody bag. I had been eying these items for over a year. Since these are pricier items, I decided to stick with black as the neutral fashion color. The black with gold accents will allow me to wear these items with multiple outfits.

The crossbody bag is very stylish and convenient when you’re on the go. This handbag can also be styled in multiple ways, so it’s like having more than one purse. This handbag can be also worn on the shoulder or as a clutch. The Valentino Rockstud pumps add a nice flair to almost any outfit. When worn, they look like jewelry on your feet. These pumps can also be styled in a variety of ways. They can be worn with a classic sheath dress or with a pair of jeans. My fashion rewards will allow me to wear them with different types of outfits over the next several years.

Last week I discussed how the right accessory can spice up your outfit. There is one accessory that can instantly take your outfit from bland to glam – the brooch. A brooch can add pizazz to a simple black dress or add some flare to a sweater. There are many options to choose when you wear a brooch. They come in different sizes, gems, and metallic colors, so the possibilities are endless on how to style them. A fun activity if you like to thrift shop is to find vintage brooches. This will add uniqueness to your jewelry collection that you can grow over time.

Here are 5 ways to style a brooch and include it into your personal style:

#1 – Add It to the Middle of Your Shirt Collar: Button every button on your shirt, including the top button, and place the brooch in the middle of your neck collar. This will give you a preppy glam look.

#2 – Wear It on a Dress: A brooch can quickly turn a plain dress into a sophisticated outfit.

#3 – Place Several on the Lapel of a Blazer or Coat: The more the merrier. Stack two or three in different sizes.

Summer Makeup is the Perfect Time to Try Brighter Colors

I hope everyone’s July 4^th holiday weekend is off to a great start!

Summertime is the perfect season to try brighter colors with your makeup. Most often summer clothes for women are made with brighter and bolder colors than fall and winter. Typical summer colors you’ll see in women’s clothing are jewel tone colors such as magenta pink, yellow, green, and teal. Complementing these colors with lipsticks in hues of fuchsia pink, violet purple, or tangerine orange will have your makeup pop and standout against your summer clothes.

The key to make sure your summer makeup remains vivid throughout the day is to set it with a good foundation. Your foundation should closely match your skin color. Most often during the summer months you will tan, so your foundation during these months should be at least one shade darker than your winter foundation. Also, your foundation should match your skin type. If you have dry skin, you want to wear a foundation that will add moisture to you face. If you have oily skin, you should wear oil free makeup to prevent a shine and extra oil that might ruin your makeup.

Eyeshadow primer is another must during the summer. Many summer outings will have you outside for several hours, so an eyeshadow primer will ensure your eyeshadow stays in place and doesn’t crease throughout the day. This will keep your colors looking bold and fresh. Summer is also a great time to wear different color bronzers and highlighters such as bronze, gold and rose gold. These colors will add a dewy glow to your makeup that will make you look like you’ve just been kissed by the sun.

Last don’t forget the blot powder and blot tissue. There is nothing worse than walking around looking like you’ve just gotten out of the swimming pool. This is a must. Your selfies are depending on it! ;-)

Glam girls represent many different industries and titles in the workplace. These workplace environments can range from business professional, to business casual, to casual. No matter where you work, your personal style should reflect your current title or the next title above you. Although some people say, “I don’t care what people think of me, my strong work performance is all that should matter” unfortunately in many cases, that is not true. People are judged every day in the workplace by how they look. Is it fair, maybe not? But sometimes to command the respect you deserve in the office, retail store or restaurant, you need to dress the part.

For example, if you are a manager at an ad agency with a casual dress code you should probably forgo wearing flip flops and jeans daily. Yes it may be tempting because everyone else is wearing it, but if you want to command attention as a leader, you want to dress differently than everyone else. Also, if you are in a business casual atmosphere and you notice your boss who is a Director or Vice President often wears business attire, you should also incorporate some business pieces into your wardrobe. Outside of your work performance, it gives the appearance that you are ready to step into that role if the opportunity arises.

Each day you get ready for work is a chance to dress for success. You should always make sure your personal style best represents you and your title to give you the respect you deserve. A couple of checks and balance questions to ask yourself as you get dressed each morning are, “If I unexpectedly have to cover my boss is a meeting today, can I command respect of the room with my attire?” Or, “Based on how I’m dressed, if a visitor were to stop me in the hallway, would he or she think I was in an authority position, an assistant, or an intern?”

Think of these questions as you shop. Then work to build a wardrobe that sets you up for success and takes you to the next level!

I mentioned in a Facebook post last week that, “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is the perfect wardrobe. Select stylish pieces that last over time and build, build, build!” As you build the perfect wardrobe that is unique to your personal style, you want to make sure you select high quality fabrics that will last for several years. One of the worse experiences you can have as a glam girl who takes pride in her personal style, is to pay premium prices for clothes that feel uncomfortable, look thin, or completely fall apart at the seams. Some high-street fashion stores are beginning to price their clothing over $150 for an article of clothing. There is no reason you should pay over $150 for a skirt that is so thin that you see your undergarments or the split busts open once you sit down – no matter how cute it is. I’m all for a high-street fashion as I incorporate pieces in my wardrobe from high-street stores, but I do make sure the fabric is of better quality.

The majority of your wardrobe should consist of high quality materials such as natural fibers. The most popular natural fibers are wool, cashmere, and cotton. The more delicate natural fibers are linen and silk. You do not have to break the bank to wear these fabrics. You can find these fabrics at stores such as Nordstrom Rack. Make sure to try on clothes before you take off the tags. Walk around in them and experience how they feel. If you are itching in the department store, you should probably leave it there.

The key is quality over quantity!

As a working professional, there are times when you have to take a business trip out of town. Life gets busy, so most often packing for a business trip is last minute. However, you don’t want to forgo your sense of fashion and style and throw anything in your suitcase. You want to make sure you look just as polished in your wardrobe out of town as you do when you’re in town. You may experience enough stress preparing for a presentation or researching a client, so you don’t need to add to your stress level mismatched and thrown together outfits while on your business trip. The key is to not just pack, but pack with a purpose. A well packed suitcase with not only your essentials – but also well planned outfits – can contribute to you feeling your best when you need to professionally perform well on your business trip.

Here are 3 tips to ensure you carry your personal style with you on a business trip:

#1 – Start Packing Ahead of Time: Give yourself at least three days to plan out your outfits before your trip. This will ensure you aren’t rushed while packing. When you’re rushed, you may forget small items that will complement your outfit well like a statement necklace or a brooch.

#2 – Plan Your Outfits by Day: Most often business trips are usually short, typically one to three days. However, you may attend several functions in a short time period. As you plan your outfits in advance, make sure to plan them by both day and event. For example, on your first day you may attend a conference and have drinks with a client afterwards. The next day you may give a presentation in the morning, and attend a client picnic during the afternoon. Make sure to pack well put together outfits for every occasion.

#3 – Coordinate Your Colors: Since most likely you’ll take once suitcase, you may not have room to pack four or five pairs of shoes. Coordinating your colors to one to two hues during your trip will allow for you to pack up to two pairs of shoes that can match several outfits.

Why Tailoring Your Clothes Should Be a Part of Your Personal Style

Glam girls, let’s admit it – we love our clothes! Many of us would need grief counseling and our bestie to put us on a 24 hour watch if we ever lost some of our favorite pieces. As you invest in pieces to build your perfect wardrobe, your clothes should be tailored to flawlessly fit your body.

Clothes from department stores come in a range of sizes, and most are designed to fit an average size. But your body dimensions may be atypical. For example your waist could be smaller than the average waist for your size, or if you’re curvy, your hips and bottom may be bigger than the norm for your size. However, if you go down a size your clothes will fit too tight and if you go up a size they will fit too loose. This can be fixed with tailoring. Tailoring is different from normal altering. For example if your pants are too long, you will get them shortened to fit your height. However, these same pants could not fit you well in other areas.

As you invest in your clothes no matter if they are couture or high-street, you will look more polished if your clothes fit your exact measurements. Clothes should fit like they were specifically tailored for you.

So how do you know if your clothes should be tailored?

A few best practices are…

One, they should not fit too tight across the hips and bottom. If your clothes look like they are pulling across the crotch area, they are too tight. Secondly, your clothes should not fit too loose. If you see too much material gapping in the crotch, bottom, and back of your thighs areas, your clothes are too big. Third, if the length of your blazer comes too far past your wrist, the arms are too long. Last, if there is too much material gapping around your waist, lower back, and under your arms, the fit in those areas are too big. Tailoring can solve these problems.

Here are three reasons why a tailor should be your new best friend:

#1 – Your Clothes Will Fit Better: Clothes should be investment pieces that last for several years, so they should fit like they were made specifically for you. You will feel more confident in them if they fit you properly.

#2 – You Can Completely Alter an Item: If you like an article of clothing, but there’s just one thing you could change to make it perfect for you, change it! For example, you can change the hemline of a flowy maxi dress from straight to high-low. You can be creative as you desire!

#3 – You Can Refresh Old Clothes: Sometimes old clothes don’t always need to be tossed. If a button is missing, replace it with new ones. Or if there is a rip on the elbows of a sweater, put suede patches on the elbows to give the sweater a new look. With tailoring, you can be as creative as you want!

Probably every glam girl has said this at least once in her lifetime, “I don’t have anything to wear!” Followed by the next line which is just as bad, “I’m on a budget and can’t go shopping!” Add this next line and you have truly felt the blues, “There’s nothing in this closet. I’m not going!” We have all probably said at least one of these lines with a closet full of clothes. The truth is you do have clothes in your closet – and if I was a betting woman – I’d say some of your clothes still have tags on them. There is a quick fix to this problem and it is right under your nose. If you are bored with your current wardrobe and can’t immediately get a new outfit, try switching your accessories to make the outfit look new.

Many of us have experienced this, so of course I won’t leave you glam girls hanging. Here are 3 tips to spice up an outfit with the right accessories:

Tip #1 – A Couture Handbag: High-end designer handbags add chic and sophistication to your outfit. Most have unique gold or silver details on them that subtly say, “Classy, classy, classy!” For example the double “Cs” on a Chanel handbag have been in style over 50 years. Another example is the “YSL” Saint Laurent handbag. Carrying either of these two handbags takes your outfit to the next level.

Tip #2 – Handbags and Jewelry with Metallic Details: Accessories with gold, rose gold, or silver metallic detailing on them can make an outfit look completely different. If you previously wore gold accessories with an outfit, switch it up the next time and wear silver accessories with different shoes and a different purse.

Tip #3 – Add Pearls: Pearls are classic and always on trend. They will never go out of style. Ever! To spice up an outfit, layer them on your neck and wrist.

7 Summer 2016 Fashion Trends to Incorporate into Your Wardrobe

It is now officially summer! Whoo Hoo! Hopefully you all have purged those closets from clothes you will no longer wear to make space for a few summer items. During the summer months, you want to stay cool yet stylish. Many outside events can lead to large crowds and standing for long periods of time. Make sure your outfit is light enough to keep you cool, while your shoes are comfortable enough in case there is limited seating – especially for you glam girls who like to show up late. There will be no seats left for you. ;-)

Here are a few summer fashion trends to weave into your wardrobe for summer 2016.

Trend #1 –Cold Shoulder Tops: These tops can be a sexy and stylish addition to your wardrobe. Cold shoulder tops have more coverage than off the shoulder tops as they typically cover your neck and upper chest and only show off your shoulders. These tops look great paired with a skirt or high-waisted shorts.

Trend #2 – Off the Shoulder Tops: These tops completely show off your neck and upper chest and are also sexy and stylish. The neck is a great attribute on a woman, so no need to cover up with a lot of jewelry. A plain neckline is ok with these tops. The sky is the limit when wearing off the shoulder tops. Pair them with skirts, slacks, jeans or shorts.

Trend #3 – Tops with Exaggerated Sleeves: Tops with exaggerated sleeves allow you to show off just how stylish you are. The more exaggerated the sleeve, the more your outfit will stand out. Pair these tops with slacks or pencil skirts.

Trend #4 – Frayed/Ripped Denim Shorts: These should already be in your closet if you like to wear shorts. This trend has been going strong since 2008. If you don’t yet have them, get them in them in your closet now.

Trend #5 – Gladiator Sandals: This style in sandals has returned summer after summer over the past five years. Haven’t tried them yet? Maybe 2016 will be your year. Since these sandals come to the knee, they look best with skirts and shorts that hit above the knee.

Trend #6 – Lace up Flats: These styles of shoes keep you comfortable and fashionable while on the go. Shoes that wrap around the ankle make your legs look sexy.

Trend #7 –Graphic Handbags: Handbags this summer are whimsical and fun. Find a handbag with a graphic that shows just how unique you are. Make sure the handbag fits your personal style so that this time next year you won’t think to yourself, “Why the heck did I buy this bag?”

Are White Shoes All That Bad? 3 Tips on How to Style Them

They say never say never, right? I have never liked white shoes, EVER! I found them to look cheap and have always preferred to wear nude colored shoes when wearing all white. I said I would never wear them. Well I officially have to eat those words! I have found a pair of white pumps that I like, no I love. Yes glam world, it’s official. The day has come – Kenya Templeton wears white shoes. Oh my!

I guess one can say I’m cheating just a bit. Hmmm – maybe a little. My white shoes have gunmetal detailing on them. But hey, I’m easing into the shock of this new white shoe journey. So baby steps everyone, baby steps. The gunmetal detailing adds character to the white shoes and will allow me to style them in various ways. Today I am wearing them with jeans and a gunmetal colored clutch.

So how can you wear white shoes? Here are a few styling tips that can ease you into the process if you too like me hated white shoes.

Tip #1: Wear them with all black. Here I styled a dressy look incorporating a pair of white pumps that have black and silver detailing, with a black tube top jumpsuit. Keeping all accessories black and silver will allow for your white shoes to really stand out against the all black outfit. Pair your white shoes with white nail polish to add an additional pop of white to your look. This outfit can be worn to an event that calls for semi-formal glam.

Tip #2: Wear them with jean shorts. Here I styled a causal look with white espadrilles and a black off the shoulder top. These white causal shoes have black tips, so I paired them with a black crossbody handbag. This look is for when you’re on the go and want to be comfortable. I call this casual glam.

Tip #3: Find a pair that has colored detailing on them. If you cannot yet go cold turkey and wear all white shoes, wear some that have a little bit of another color on them to ease you into it.
