Understanding Media Lately

Business Intelligence

My Industry research will be in Healthcare and i chose this because, i am from Ghana in West Africa and healthcare seems to be the biggest issue my country has been battling with for years. Nevertheless, healthcare isn't just a hot topic among Africans, even here in the United States healthcare stands out as the hot topic and no matter who wins the elections this year the healthcare system will be reformed and most likely transformed and analytics play a major role in this transformation. I found an article that analyzes the fluoride content of water in the EBSCO Host Database; article (Bliss R. M., 2004). In dental health, tooth decay seems to be a predominant issue bothering people and this is caused by the lack of fluoride. The article talks about NCC's fluoride intake assessment instrument which will be used to study the amount of fluoride people consume from a variety of sources. With this new database, researchers will learn whether consumers are meeting or going above the established adequate daily intake level of fluoride.

In the world of Business intelligence especially when it comes to healthcare, this data gathering will help predict how many people can be affected by a low fluoride consumption and how best to curb the situation. In going forward, people will know the required amount of fluoride in men is 3 mg and 4 mg in women.

Ghana Mourns

2012-07-26T21:03:00.000-07:00

Tuesday July 24, 2012 turned into a day of mourning for the citizens of Ghana, Africa and the world as a whole. At about 2pm Tuesday afternoon the state run television stations broke into their regular programming to announce the President's death. The chief of staff John Henry Martey Newman told the nation that the President had died a few hours after being taken to the 37 military hospital, but did not give further details.

Many students from Ghana and other countries travel abroad to study and gain knowledge and to us this man was a great inspiration. He studied at the London school of Economics and Political Science and earned a PhD in Law at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

In his early career, Mills was a lecturer at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana. In 1971 he was selected for the Fulbright Scholar Program at Stanford Law School in California.

After receiving his PhD, he returned to Ghana and taught at his Alma Mater, the University of Ghana for the next 25 years. During this time he became a visiting professor of Temple Law School in Philadelphia from 1978 to 1979 and 1986 to 1987.

Mills indeed had an impressive career prior to him becoming the third president of the 4th Republic of Ghana. The important issue now is how he died and the role the media has played in relaying this information to the public. It’s true that most of us are typically very negative when we discuss the media. Even in this class, most of our blogs are about something absurd the media has done. In this case, however, the media and their snooping abilities have been very beneficial to us as a public. Ghana as a country wants to know the details of how their President died so unexpectedly. His office did not release the cause of his death but the media did a great job of giving us hints; they said he had been suffering from throat cancer and had been receiving treatment for about two years and even recently came to the US for eight days for checkups and tests. This information was enough to satisfy the citizens of Ghana for the time being. I think at this point, we are all thankful for the media and the information they have provided us with in this issue.

R.I.P Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, May the good Lord guard your soul.

They Need Privacy!

2012-07-19T18:17:00.002-07:00

Just a couple weeks ago I spoke to you about the divorce between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and how I wish every part of their life was not so public. This week, am afraid to say this news has even escalated to a higher level of gossip.

According to fox news, Holmes is also reportedly seeking full legal custody and primary residential custody of their 6-year-old daughter, Suri. This has really given the media a lot to talk about including how the church of Scientology was the main reason why she did that and if Tom is good enough to take care of Suri. Just early this week Tom Cruise had the chance to spend time with his 6-year old daughter, they went flying around in a helicopter, and just father and daughter time.

Even with this the media has turned it all into a competition “But already declaring Katie the winner would be like crowning the Oklahoma Thunder NBA champs after only winning Game 1 (news flash: the Miami Heat ended up winning)”, and comparing who shows more affection and who is better and parenting than the other.

I just think things are really getting out of hand here; first of all a 6-year old kid does not need all of that especially under these circumstances. Comparing whether mum treats her better than dad won't help this girl in anyway in her mental development but would rather weaken the relationship and good thoughts she has about one of them. Again I say the media should let this family have their private life and leave this kid to grow in a balanced environment.

Butt Implants

2012-07-12T16:53:00.004-07:00

To earn money in this world people have to work their butt off, some have to wake up as early as 5am to work an eight hour day while others go all the way and work twelve hour shifts to be able to make earns meat. On the other hand, others try to take a shortcut and according to Kimberly Smedley, the booty business seems to be a lucrative profession.

Smedley, 45, a Georgia native, was arrested in October of 2011 while preparing to inject clients in a Washington, D.C. hotel. She pleaded guilty to administering silicone injections to a large female clientele over an eight-year period. According to The Smoking Gun, Smedley reportedly earned about $1.3 million from her illegal enterprise, it is said that she injected her clients–usually in hotel rooms–with a substance intended for “metal or plastic lubrication, and as an additive for paint, furniture, and automotive polishes,” according to a sentencing memo filed by prosecutors in U.S. District Court in Baltimore, Maryland.

I seriously do not understand what this world is coming to, Will people ever be content with their body or at least go through the right channels like surgery, if a procedure like this needs to be done? How can one sit and let themselves be injected with a substance intended for metal or plastic lubrication? Something that is poisonous and a life threat if a wrong nerve is hit. Or even perhaps let someone other than a nurse inject them?

Divorce Really??

2012-07-05T21:39:00.002-07:00

Divorce is the final termination of a marital union, canceling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the bonds between the parties. In America, it is said that first marriages that end in divorce last for about eight years. I personally don't believe in divorce but I think to some extent, if all else fails and a divorce is the only option, then the couple can choose to end their marriage.

Katie Homes & Tom Cruise

At the end of the day, I think it should be a private issue between the couple based on what is best for them-- not something that the whole world is entitled to have an opinion on. With that said, the trending news all over the internet this week has been about famous actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes getting a divorce. It seems I can't turn on the TV, open a web page, or walk past a magazine rack without seeing something about their divorce. I even heard on TV today that the Church of Scientology is afraid of how their reputation will be affected because of the divorce.

It's extremely frustrating to me that this news has taken over the media. It's clear that the media is getting carried away when they are discussing how the divorce of two people will affect an entire church sect. It seems ridiculous to me. If my parents were to get divorced, there's no way anyone would mention how the Methodist Church would be affected. I understand people are surprised and interested in the gossip, but it seems to have gone too far.

Another Life Threat??

2012-06-28T12:09:00.000-07:00

Playing video games- be it on one's cell phone, laptop, handheld or gaming console is always fun. One of the best parts is the fact that players usually have more than one life in the game. With this is mind, if a player makes a mistake and dies it is no big deal because they can easily restart the game. They may then attempt to rectify their mistakes, using as many tries as need until they finally get it.

Life, on the other hand, is no where close to being like that. Many people wish for "re-do's" at their life. However, as the popular Drake song song goes "You Only Live Once." Many people believe that the reason they are still living the life they have is because of luck or spiritual protection.

Curtis Jackson

Curtis Jackson (AKA 50 Cent) is no exception to that. He was shot and struck by nine bullets in the year 2000 after trying to quit drug dealing and pursue a rap career. This begs the question: Who gets shot nine times and lives to talk about it? Since that shooting he began wearing bullet proof vests as a form of protection. This helped until about a month ago. He was hospitalized for food poisoning after his tour in London.

And finally, earlier this week he was rushed to a nearby hospital, when his bullet-proof SUV was rear ended by a Mack truck on a Long Island expressway in New York. It is reported that the car nearly flipped after being hit by the truck. His website has more info and pictures about the incident.

I think he is a good man and the world is not ready to see another star die yet. I hope people will stop committing crime and this world will all live in peace in harmony. God Bless America!

THE END HAS COME

2012-06-20T20:29:00.001-07:00

To some the words "The End" means a movie has come to an end. When others hear these words, they think of the coming of the great Messiah and their chance to go to Heaven. Still others become afraid because it makes them think of the end of the world. Today, the end doesn't relate to any of these, but instead the end of the road to the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.

The 2012 NBA playoffs have been entertaining and tension packed. With the Heat up to 3-1, History says Oklahoma City Thunder aren't coming back. This has been the trend for years; no team has been able to come back after a 3-1 deficit. Yes, it was said earlier that no one has been able to erase a 2-0 deficit in the playoffs and Oklahoma City did it against the Spurs but I am here to tell you there is a huge difference between the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat.

On Thursday, the Miami Heat will bring the end to the NBA finals in Miami and send the Thunder home crying. Most ESPN Critics think the same way and we are going to keep our fingers crossed for game 5. If the Heat lose game 5, they must then go back Oklahoma City to play the last two games. I seriously doubt that is going to happen. The Heat has made some impressive plays, changed up their style and have stood up relying on each other and not just one person like their opponents. Heat deviated from their normal play by releasing most of the stress from Lebron James and having other players including Mario Chalmers, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade step up their game.

Lebron James is in a remarkable situation. Over his nine seasons he has earned three MVP awards, three trips to the NBA. And now this: For the first time, he's one win from a championship. ''I have a job to do,'' James said Wednesday. ''And my job is not done.''

I believe he has to finish his job tomorrow because it is his time. It's now or Never!! Go Heat!

Cry For Attention

2012-06-13T17:05:00.000-07:00

Again our famous Artists have done it again. The very people we hail up high for their tremendous performance in movies, unique voices, and the crowd they pull even with a simple word that comes out of their mouth. These people are role models for a lot of people especially the ones who want to be great musicians or movie stars like them.

The music industry is one of the most diverse industries in the world; it doesn’t have any barriers such as age, color or even race. Everything out there affects every one of us one way or the other even if we don’t speak the same language or have different cultures. Musicians affect a variety of people with their lyrics, dress code and even sometimes their stage performance. The effects can either be to calm the person down with their warm words, give hope for the future and even sometimes get the people on edge with bad lyrics.

I am a great music lover and the part I love most about music is the concerts. Lately almost every one buys their music online through Amazon, iTunes, Android market and even sometimes the artist’s website. Even though listening to the songs creates a bond with the musician the biggest way is to attend the concerts of one’s favorite musicians, where you actually get to see them perform ones favorite songs and actually get to know a little bit more about them and how they actually look behind the camera.

Last Thursday, the 53-year old very famous singer, Madonna at her musical concert in Istanbul started stripping and eventually flashed her boobs in front of over 55,000 fans. I know people seek attention all the time but for a 53-year old? And you are Madonna and not just any upcoming star. What I ask myself is; how would a parent who was there with their family feel? What are teaching kids who might have seen this on TV since it was live broadcasted on some channels? What are these adults who are supposed to be our role models teaching us?

Famous dying

2012-06-07T19:15:00.003-07:00

It is so sad to wake up in the morning and the first thing you hear is that a once famous musician, artist, or TV star is dead. Lately, this has been all over the news, but the worst part of it all is the trending suicide death these people have started. Dying a natural death or through an accident is one thing, but SUICIDE is a big NO!
I enjoy listening to music and rapping....perhaps singing to the song every now and then, but I have never been good at instruments. I marvel whenever I see an instrumentalist- especially guitarists.
According to http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/07/showbiz/bob-welch-dead/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 a famous musician (guitarist) Bob Welch from the 1960's was found dead in his home in Nashville, TN. Police say "All indications are that it was a suicide." A suicide note was found, the article said.
Now, my question is ; Why would a 66 year old man shoot himself?
He was not just an ordinary civilian . His death is on CNN....so what would cause a man of that age for him to pick up a gun and shoot?
This is devastating!
Do you think there should be more suicide awareness or there could be something big behind all these deaths??
