In their stowed form the kites fit into a container mounted on the foredeck.

For the larger sizes the kite line is operated by a small electric or hydraulic winch that allows the height of the kite to be controlled remotely from the wheelhouse.

On deployment, the small diameter tube the gives the kite its shape is inflated and then the kite is launched with the boat heading downwind.

Once launched, the kite can operate effectively over an arc of 60° either side of the downwind line, thus allowing the kite to be effective over a considerable range of wind directions.

The Omega Sails kite has been tested on a number of different vessels including on one Atlantic voyage from the Canaries to Guadeloupe when the kite was the only means of propulsion used.

On this voyage, the 10m power catamaran averaged close to 5 knots.

Omega Sails is claiming that the kite can maintain a speed of 5 to 6 knots when the wind is blowing at between 15 to 30 knots.

A more demanding application has been found on 20m fishing boats operating from the Brittany coastline.

Here the fishermen have found that they could use a kite of an effective size of 200 square metres for about 40% of the time and this has led to fuel saving of between 15% and 25%.

With the sail costing in the region of €20,000, this means that it could be possible for the cost of the kite to be recovered in just over one year with this sort of intensive use.

Full story...

      Posted via http://maritime-news.posterous.com Maritime-News posterous

Authorities have said that there have been no reported injuries and they do not believe any vehicles fell from the bridge.

U.S. Coast Guard added that the M/V Delta Mariner was not carrying any hazardous cargo.

The 312-foot long and 8,000 horsepower M/V Delta Mariner, owned and operated by Foss Maritime, is used to carry Boeing rocket components, including rocket booster cores, for the Boeing Delta IV rocket program.

The versatile vessel is designed to navigate shallow inland waterways as well as the open ocean, and generally hauls rocket components approximately 550 miles from the Boeing factory in Decatur, Alabama down the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway to the Gulf of Mexico, according to Foss’ website.

State officials say that the bridge, formally the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge, was designed so that if it were struck that only portions of the structure would fail.

Inspectors estimate the gap in the bridge to be approximately 300 feet wide.

Full story...

      Posted via http://maritime-news.posterous.com Maritime-News posterous

He thought it would be the last time he'd ever see the Queen Bee.

But yesterday, more than three years after Douglas and his brother-in-law were tossed off the boat by a wave, the U.S. Coast Guard called to say the vessel had washed up on the Spanish coast.

It was rusty and covered in barnacles, but intact. "It looks entirely different," Douglas said upon seeing the photos.

"That's amazing." Douglas remembers the water was restless on the day he set out to sea, and the fish weren't biting.

He tried to keep the boat stationary, bracing himself as huge rollers crashed into it.

"At all times, it's a very sketchy area," Douglas told msnbc.com.

"You wouldn't want to be dumped in the ocean there."

But that's exactly what happened when a rogue wave knocked Douglas and his brother-in-law, Rich St. Pierre, off the boat and into a sink-or-swim fight for survival. Douglas remembers thinking the water was not too cold.

"The only way I was going to survive was just to get started, not tread water," he said.

Full story...

      Posted via http://maritime-news.posterous.com Maritime-News posterous

The fresh water comes from melting ice and river run-off.

The rise could be due to strong Arctic winds increasing an ocean current called the Beaufort Gyre, making the sea surface bulge upwards.

The Beaufort Gyre is one of the least understood bodies of water on the planet. It is a slowly swirling body of ice and water north of Alaska, about 10 times bigger than Lake Michigan in the United States.

Some scientists believe the natural rhythms of the gyre could be affected by global warming which could have serious implications for the ocean's circulation and rising sea levels.

Climate models have suggested that wind blowing on the surface of the sea has formed a raised dome in the middle of the Beaufort Gyre, but there have been few in-depth studies to confirm this.

Full story...

      Posted via http://maritime-news.posterous.com Maritime-News posterous

That’s when we heard a loud slamming noise and we all rushed to grab the life vests,” one of the passengers, Nyoman Tirtawati, told the Jakarta Globe.
The ship, called the Andika Nusantara, set sail from Lembar Port in Padang Bai in West Lombok district at about 11 a.m. When it was about halfway between Gili Asahan and the main island of Lombok, it began to encounter waves that were up to three meters high.
Carda Damanik, head of the local branch of state-owned ferry operator ASDP Indonesia, said the rough seas caused the ship’s load, which included eight fully loaded trucks and dozens of cars, to shift toward one side. That made the boat tilt at a 10-degree angle.
Three ships were sent to rescue the passengers and crew. The evacuation took place about 11 hours after the initial incident.

Full story...

      Posted via http://maritime-news.posterous.com Maritime-News posterous

Jim Mears. Mears’ crewmate, 22-year-old Trevor Horan, escaped the capsizing.

Now, scuba diver Steve Gatto, of Sicklerville, Camden County, has called on the Coast Guard to let him and a team of divers assist in the search for the sunken Mandy Ness and then dive the wreckage once it’s found.

“When there’s loss of life, it’s important that people are asking why, and they want answers.

Hopefully, we can find answers and people can have closure,” Gatto said Sunday afternoon.

Gatto said he reached out to the Coast Guard shortly after the capsizing earlier this month to offer his services because he feels that his team is qualified to do the job. He said he submitted an estimate for the job to the Coast Guard late Friday afternoon, but could not discuss the details of the estimate.

“It’s interesting to do these things and find out where they lead. We feel that we can help out no matter whom it is. In order to be eligible FERC says the project needs to be small, short-term and located in an environmentally non-sensitive area, among other things.

FERC first developed the pilot license process in 2008 in order to allow developers to test new hydrokinetic technologies (tidal, wave and inland) in order to determine appropriate sites for the technology and confirm its environmental effects.

FERC says they have seen a growing interest in such projects since its inception, with a total of 3 entities with applications already submitted and another 9 in pre-stages of the application process.

Full story...

      Posted via http://maritime-news.posterous.com Maritime-News posterous

Malcolm Frost, 26, was diving with friends at Double Island late on Tuesday when he was stung.

He was taken to Palm Cove where lifeguards were alerted about 5.15pm. Lifeguard Lana Shanks, who was on duty at Palm Cove, said Mr Frost was in severe pain and had difficultly breathing.

Ms Shanks called an ambulance before administering bottled oxygen to Mr Frost and using three bottles of vinegar to treat the stinger wound on his lower back.

"When you’ve already used vinegar and administered oxygen, you just need to reassure them," Ms Shanks said of stinger victims.

"They’re very restless and they won’t sit still.

"When you looked into his face, you just knew he was in pain."

While Mr Frost was wearing a dive suit when he was stung, North Queensland Surf Lifesaving regional manager Colin Sparkes said the irukandji barb may have penetrated through a tear in the suit or an exposed area of skin.

Full story...

      Posted via http://maritime-news.posterous.com Maritime-News posterous

"We'll continue to make those messages clear.

The most important way to make those messages clear is to show that we are prepared, that we are strong, that we'll have a presence in that part of the world," Panetta added.

The USS Enterprise, along with the other six ships in the carrier strike group, will deploy to the Middle East in March. Some 50 relatively small pieces of the mysterious white flotsam, interspersed with sargassum weed, extended in an east-west line for 6 miles.

Graham and colleagues collected samples, the largest about the size of a softball.

The material was hard but porous and uniformly embedded with black spheres less than a half-inch in diameter.

Two days later, the researchers collected similar samples about 25 miles south of Dauphin Island.

Nobody knew what the material was. Some speculated it came from Deepwater Horizon; others hypothesized that it could be coral or another substance made by marine plants or animals.

Graham sent a few pieces of the material to Chris Reddy, a marine chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), where Reddy and colleagues determined that the material was a manmade, not natural, substance.

The WHOI scientists then analyzed the oil on the debris using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography, a technique that can identify the thousands of individual chemical compounds that comprise different oils from different reservoirs.

The chemical “fingerprint” of the oil on the debris matched that of oil from Deepwater Horizon.
