Russia: Better conservation for the environment and the economy

The Kamchatka peninsula , far east of Russia, is home to steaming geysers, simmering volcanoes, snow-capped mountains and a wide variety of plants and animals. The rare Steller’s sea eagle soars through its skies, while the only population of sea otters in the Western Pacific finds shelter along its coast.

Through a UNDP-GEF programme in Kamchatka, more effective management of natural parks and protected areas, and new livelihood resources for local communities have helped spur economic development and the adoption of better conservation practices.

The municipality of Lugansk took an environmental hotspot - a landfill with over three million tons of waste - and turned it into an opportunity. They cleaned it up, established a system to capture the methane emitted from the landfill, and are now burning the methane gas as a way to reduce overall green house gas emissions. In the future, it could also be used to generate electricity for local use.

Argande: Fashion for development?

From creation to the catwalk - See how the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkey and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) are supporting hundreds of women from South East Anatolia to become fashion entrepreneurs, forming and owning their own cooperative. Only three percent of women in this region are engaged in paid labour.

In a pro bono partnership with key fashion designers and Turkey’s leading retailer, MUDO, nearly 150 women are being trained in business skills, like sales and marketing, and in technical skills such as design, cutting and sewing. The women draw inspiration for their designs from traditional regional motifs. The collection Argande – the name of a beautiful goddess and ruler of ancient Mesopotamia – has become a regular at Turkey's fashion week.
