Tamako Market (たまこまーけっと Tamako Māketto?) is a Japanese anime television series produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Naoko Yamada. It began airing in Japan on January 10, 2013. The anime has been licensed in North America by Sentai Filmworks.

Tamako Kitashirakawa,

Tamako is a first-year in high school whose family runs a mochi shop in their town's shopping district called Tama-ya. She enjoys her high school life and the baton club with her friends Kanna and Midori. She helps her family run the shop and invent new kinds of mochi. Her birthday is on New Year's Eve and is often forgotten due to the busy schedule, as mochi is a highly popular new year's foodstuff. Despite this happening every year, Tamako devots herself to helping her family deal with the huge amount of orders at the end of the year, often forgetting her own birthday while telling everyone to remember it in the weeks leading up to it. Many of her friends in the shopping district show up with presents on New Year's Eve, only to walk away forgetting to give them to her.

Tamako seems to be nervous about public speaking, becoming extremely stiff when she proposed her and Mochizō's plan in the shopping district meeting, though Mochizō seems to have a similar problem. She also has problems swimming, and seems to be afraid of water. When Midori was teaching her to swim in a shallow pool, she lets go of Tamako for her to swim by herself, but Tamako ends up swimming at the same spot, despite kicking with all her effort. Tamako is also shown to be rather slow in catching up with things, particularly regarding people's feelings. She is one of the few characters that does not know Mochizō has a crush on her, and she fails to pick up on her sister's crush when both Midori and Kanna realise it almost straight away. Tamako also feeds Dera mochi on a regular basis, and she feeds him too much for his size, making him bloated and unable to fly properly. While Dera continues to eat, he is still plagued by his duty to find his prince a bride, though with Tamako's contant feeding, he's not in shape to carry out that duty. Anko, Tamako's younger sister, has commented that Dera doesn't need to eat things just because Tamako offers them to him, commenting that he's just as much as an air head as her sister is.

Dera Mochimazzi,

Dera is a bird that speaks in Japanese, with a little bossy tone, that ends up staying at Tamako's house. He is a noble attendant for a royal court from a tropical place and was on journey to find a bride for its prince. However, after gaining an affinity for mochi, he has put on a lot of weight thus cannot fly properly anymore, only being able to manage short distances before he runs out of breath. He is often just referred to as "Bird" (鳥 Tori?) by Tamako's family, or simply "Dera-chan" (デラちゃん?) by Tamako, as his surname sounds very similar to "mochi mazui" (もちまずい?, lit. bad tasting mochi). Tamako's father has commented that Dera should change his name to Dera Mochiumai (デラ・モチうまい?, lit. delicious mochi), to which Dera has has replied that his name is a royal one and it would be an insult to change it. Dera is rather versed in the ways of love, or at least he maintains that he is. He is seen giving Mochizō love advice on his crush on Tamako. He tries to persuade Mochizō to do a courtship dance, as he puts his wings above his head and fans his feathers out. Mochizō, however, has profusely refused this notion, as it is obviously something that's done only among Dera's species.

Dera is also rather full of himself as well, which usually stems from a series of misunderstandings. When he sees a wind chime in Mochizō's window, he flies in proclaiming that it was rather late after his arrival that they're having a feast for him, but he was honoured in any case. Mochizō has to clear up this misunderstanding, telling him that the wind chime is a decoration. He also tells Mochizō that Tamako tried to court him once, but he had to turn her feelings down, and while she was hurt, it was the best he could do. The truth was that Tamako sneezed at him when they first met, due to Dera jumping out of a bouquet of flowers and landing on her face. Dera claims that sneezing at someone is a sign of potential courtship, but Tamako's nose was just irritated at having close contact with an animal that was on her face, preventing her from breathing properly. Kanna has also sneezed at Dera, but seems to have cleared up that misunderstanding immediately by shouting loudly that she's allergic to birds.

Midori Tokiwa,

Midori is Tamako's classmate, childhood friend, and baton club member. Her grandparents own and run a toy shop in the town's shopping district called Tokiwa-do. Midori feels the need to "take care" of Tamako, so much that she may be in love with her.

Kanna Makino,

Kanna is a high school student in the same year as her friends, Tamako and Midori, and is a member of the baton club. She is the daughter of a carpenter who works for the shopping district as Tamako and her family. A relaxed and laid back girl, Kanna does not care what anyone else thinks and is not easily swayed, however she does have a fear of heights. Kanna is often portrayed as rather eccentric, and usually wears a straight and expressionless face despite being fun and and a good friend. Kanna has called herself a good long distance swimmer, while Midori has said that all she was doing was floating rather than swimming, though Kanna sees this as the reason as to why she is good at long distance swimming.

Shiori Asagiri,

Shiori is one of Tamako's classmates and a member of the badminton club. She is a knowledgeable and resourceful girl, with a serious, cool personality. However, it's shown that while she is quiet and often mistaken as distant, she is actually extremely shy and and wants to be good friends with Tamako, being extremely nervous in thanking Tamako for letting her stay at her place. After plucking up the courage to thank Tamako, they are now good friends. Dera also seems to have fallen for her, though she is either unaware of his inter-species feelings, or perhaps has not mentioned them because she does not see Dera in the same way. She has thanked Dera as well, as if it were not for him falling on her (due to his weight snapping branches and footholds), she would not have met Tamako and now be her friend. When Dera mistakes this as love and produces one of his best feathers for her, she shortly replies that she didn't take up badminton because she liked feathers and leaves him in the middle of the street.

Mochizō Ōji,

Mochizō is Tamako's childhood friend whose family also runs a mochi shop called Ōji-ya or in the new name Ricecake Oh!Zee, a mochi shop located across from Tama-ya. Though their fathers are not on good terms due to business competition, he and Tamako are good friends. He is in love with Tamako, and has been in love with her for a few years running, shown by the pile of presents he has kept in a drawer, being unable to hand them to Tamako on her birthday. Mochizō seems to be down on luck, since he has commented that he has never been in Tamako's class at school. He is also shown to be nervous with public speaking, despite telling Tamako to let him take over speaking in the shopping district meeting.
