They allow you to go and enjoy a nice dinner as a gift. Just make sure you tip the server the same percentage as you would if you were paying the total bill. General-purpose gift cards give the consumer a broader range on where to use the card. These types of cards are typically Visa, MasterCard or American Express and can be used anywhere those major credit cards are accepted. The flexibility is the main benefit of using the general-purpose card. You can fill up your gas tank, go out to eat, buy concert tickets or what ever else you want to do with it.

If your gift card is lost or stolen, good luck! Some retailers will not replace a missing gift card. Other retailers such as Macy's and Bloomingdales are more easygoing and will issue you a new card if you can provide a receipt showing your most recent purchase. Some general-purpose cards will cancel the missing card and will re-issue a new one for a $5.95 to $10 fee.

So make sure you keep your card in a safe place, use it before it expires and buy it directly from the merchandiser and you will avoid most of these fees.

As of 2004, 68 percent of all major retailers offer some sort of a gift card. The number is probably even greater now that it is 2006. Coffee giant, Starbucks, has estimated that 10 percent of all their sales come from gift cards.

Another reason retailers love gift cards is consumers will pay less attention to sales and they tend to spend more than what they have on the card. Retailers notice that consumers will spend the whole amount on the card and have a small balance of $2 or $3 left on it. Chances are, shoppers will never use the card again and this works to the retailer's advantage.

One more advantage to retailers is instead of having just the holiday rush and then being prepared for holiday returns, they actually get a double rush. Since consumers give gift cards as holiday presents, the gift card holder will usually rush straight to the mall after the holidays to spend their cards. This results in a major cut-down in returned merchandise.

There are a few disadvantages for retailers. Gift cards can cost the retailer for 50 cents to $3 per card, depending on how many are ordered. There are also implementation costs of up to $50,000. Implementation costs cover all start up fees related to producing and tracking of gift cards.

Gift Card Exchanging

Recently, Internet businesses have created web sites allowing people to sell or swap unwanted gift cards. EBay got involved in this idea and now has more than 7,500 gift cards listed for sale or auction. This can be a good idea if you receive a gift card to a particular store and you do not like anything in that store. You can exchange these cards on these sites for other cards or even cash. Sites such as SwapAGift.com and CardAvenue.com are good sites that offer this service. On CardAvenue.com, you can even buy gift cards at a discounted rate. For example, you may be able to buy a $25 Office Depot card for $17; that is another way of saving.

Giving wine as a gift does possess some risks. Not only do you run the risk of purchasing a bottle and "accidentally" drinking it before you can give it to the recipient, but there is also a slight chance that you will get someone a bottle of wine they don't find particularly appealing. In order to minimize this risk, be sure to buy the recipient the type of wine they like, not the type you like. If you are buying for someone who loves white wine, try to stay away from purchasing red, no matter how cute the Merlot looks sitting on its shelf.

For instances where you are unsure of what wine a person may like, try giving them a wine basket with a variety of wines or a gift certificate to a wine store.

Port, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir are increasingly becoming the gold, frankincense and myrrh of the modern day, establishing themselves as gifts of the wise. Because the holidays bring about so much stress preparing for the arrival of in-laws, cooking a turkey dinner, watching for poop as reindeer fly over head, wine can help the giver give something easy and the receiver drink something soothing. As a gift, it's a win-win situation: when it comes to wine, one size fits all.

1st Anniversary- The first anniversary is the year of paper. Paper gifts are not as boring as one may think. It can be as simple as a handwritten poem or as lavish as an airline ticket.

2nd Anniversary- The second anniversary is cotton. A good cotton gift is clothing. Personalizing it makes it even more special. Nowadays you can personalize just about anything.

9th Anniversary- Pottery is the ninth anniversary. Sculptures, vases and bowls are the most common of these gifts. A great gift idea would be to enjoy a pottery class together.

10th Anniversary- Tin or Aluminum is the gifts for 10 years of bliss. Jewelry boxes or tin gift containers filled with goodies make great tin/aluminum gifts. Gift basket containers would be a great to incorporate tin or aluminum.

11th Anniversary- Eleven years of marriage equal a gift of Steel. Gifts can be anything from a stainless steel watch or pendant to stainless kitchen appliances.

20th Anniversary- Twentieth Anniversary is the gift of China. That is pretty self explanatory.

25th Anniversary- Twenty five years of marriage is also known as The Silver Anniversary. Silver jewelry or nice jewelry boxes are always safe bets.

30th Anniversary- Pearl is the gift of a thirty year anniversary. Pearls can be given as a necklace or placed in a ring.

35th Anniversary- Coral or Jade is the gifts for this anniversary. You can find coral gifts such as vases, sculptures, trays or games made or coral. Jade gifts are usually jewelry like bracelets and earrings.

40th Anniversary- The fortieth year anniversary gift is Ruby. Like many of the gifts, jewelry is a good gift.

For a couple with no money, but a TV set: Males, tell your woman you love her, wish you could give her the world, but can she accept at this time in the relationship your holding her hand during the shows and cuddling with her all night, breakfast in bed in the morning. Female: Get something that resembles ribbon, wrap it over the remote and tell him he gets to watch whatever he wants tonight with you sitting next to him and sharing the experience.

Gift Certificates are great for any occasion as long as you follow the rules:

Make it as specific as possible but broad enough to enjoy. Specific, something you know they like, NOT BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT, you can like it, just know that they like it. Know, don't assume. If they go to the movies regulary, a pass to a theater with 21 screening would rock, passes to your favorite sub-titled french film would not rock.

If they are always brand name clothes shopping a gift certificate to a store that carries their brand of clothing would rock, a gift certificate to Walmart would not rock.

If they are into tools and do-it-yourself home projects, software of house "how to" such as Home Depot or This Old House would rock. Giving them a drill would not rock (unless you know they are looking for a drill and you know it is their favorite brand of drill).

These little things may seem obvious to those that gift all of the time and receive rave reactions. Bless you. But for those of you who feel you bumble and stumble through the gift giving process I hope this helped.

It is safe to assume that probably 9 out 10 people use perfume on an everyday basis. Be it to the office, to keep fresh or for a wild night out, perfumes have become part of our daily lives. When did the perfume make its first appearance? This is something that we like to find out.

It is believed that the perfumes first started way back in the 10th Century BC among the Medes and Persians, primarily to hide their bad hygiene. During that time, scented waters and aromatic lotions were made out of rose, fig, absinthe and nard. These were also served as aromatic wines. The Egyptians also used perfumes for the purpose of mummification. In fact, research has shown that the Egyptians even considered perfumes to be part of worship. Their perfumes were made from flowers and spices like saffron, irises, cinnamon, heliotrope, myrrh and cedar oil. Egypt was probably the first lead for perfume in the ancient world. The Greeks and Romans also had an equal love for fragrances in the ancient world.

During the arrival of Christianity in the period of Galo-Romans to Gothic Era, churches were known to have used perfumed wax candles and fragrant incense. The essence of perfume stretched all the way to the period of monarchy of Valois Kings, Renaissance and Bourbons Kings. At these times, perfumes were even used as magic potions and whatnots to entice and deceive - totally different reason and purpose compared to modern times.

The modern perfume revolution came into full swing when perfumer Paul Parquet created the first modern perfume for Houbigant in 1882 under the name of "Fougere Royale". A method known as enfleurage was used to process the natural ingredients. This method produces very fine tuberose and jasmine oil but in small amounts hence making them extremely costly. During the industrial revolution, powerful European chemical companies made a breakthrough discovery in aroma-chemical such as heliotropine, coumarin, artificial musk, vanillin, ionone and l'hydroxycitronellal.

The dawn of the 20th century marked crucial discoveries for perfumes. The first discovery was in 1903 when Moureu and Delange discovered methyl heptine carbonate and methyl octine carbonates which fragrances were similar to those of violet leaves. The surfacing of department stores in Europe was the perfect platform for perfumers like Francois Coty who was the first person to produce a combination of natural and synthetic fragrances. He created a perfume called L'Origan in 1905. By 1930, there were numerous perfume houses like Houbigant, Rigaud, Lubin, Guerlain, D'Orsay, Roger & Gallet and a host of others.

Today the perfume is industry is booming and with new fragrances and designers, mushrooming it is unlikely that the perfume industry would ever go on slow mode. Famous fragrances by top-notch designers like Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gauthier, Kenzo, Yves Saint Laurent, Kelvin Clein and a host of other labels, are constantly reinventing themselves to produce top quality irresistible perfumes.
