Hello everyone, I’m back! It’s been a long time since my last post so I am eager to get back into the blogosphere. Let me just quickly recap from where I left off…

My campaigns course took a huge turn from being a capstone class to full-time job. As an account executive, I had the pleasure of working with a team of my peers to work on a social media and mobile campaign for a very large, local corporation. Since the company was such a big name, we had a very large task in front of us. It did not take long before I began pulling all-nighters and getting my hands dirty in every aspect of the project. Two months flew by before I could even blink. By then we had conducted a focus group, created an integrated marketing campaign spanning social media, guerrilla marketing and events, completed a plans book to present our ideas and pitched our campaign to our college and professors. Our group finally presented to the client in downtown Atlanta and then I was back on this planet. Finally! My blinders were off and I had the brief opportunity to update myself on my family and world happenings (Yes, I really was that busy).

Overall, even with the immense amount of work involved and the sometimes-intense circumstances, the class was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I met some really amazing people, gained a lot of experiences I can take with me on my job search and a new confidence.

Almost immediately after the class ended, I moved back home. Since then I have been hitting the job hunt at full force. I’m ready to start my career, and this experience has only proven to me that I can handle anything an employer wants to throw my direction. This is good because I am undergoing the difficult task of relocating to Washington D.C. I’m not afraid of the challenge, but more eager to get into the game and start my next chapter in life.

Now that I am home, I will be putting more time into my social networking. I don’t want to keep my followers waiting any longer. If you haven’t checked out my twitter feed or website yet, the information is below.

Look for more updates soon and have a great one!

My capstone course, Advertising Campaigns, began today. We have not been given our teams yet, but we have gotten word on who our client for the course will be: Turner Broadcasting! What an awesome client! Needless to say, I was shocked, but I am so excited to begin planning and creative executions. Positions of Advertising Executive, Account Planner, Media Planner, Public Relations and Promotions, and Creatives will be assigned tomorrow (and, of course, I will keep the progress posted). The class is a substantial size, so it is still to be determined how many teams will be presenting to headquarters in Atlanta on July 27th.

Hopefully, more to come tomorrow!

Here it is again. The blog from my past finds its way back again...

Two years ago, the economy crashed. Badly. I was a rising junior witnessing my close friend trying to find a job right after graduation. He was a member of multiple honors clubs, extensive experience in leadership and management, several internships, glowing recommendations and a high GPA. None of this mattered though, because the jobs simply weren’t out there. The debt from his four-year private school tuition was, but no jobs. Highly successful individuals were getting laid-off left and right, unemployment sky-rocketed and people were forced to chose between putting gas in their tank to get to work or feeding their families. And what did this young, educated man have to outweigh the success of his thousands of over-qualified competition? His potential. To put it simply, “we have hired someone else for the position. I’m sorry.”

This is when I wrote this blog. Just a short four semesters away until I was thrust out of college and I had to “figure it out” in the “real world.” Fear is an excellent emotion when a writer wants to be inspired. Fear is exactly where I was when I wrote this post.

Now, I am about to graduate into that real world. Thankfully economy has taken a better turn since the last time I read this, but there are still striking similarities of what I am now feeling and what my friend was undergoing. In my commentary after finding my original blog post, I wrote, “When will this end? Someone please help us!” Well, I have a sneaking suspicion that these feelings will never end. No matter the economy, it seems graduates will still feel the same anxiety and nervousness of being plucked out of their comfort zone and shoved into the world unknown.

I began with this: ‘Amidst a crowed stadium full of caps, gowns, and tassels, one thing is missing among the sea of college graduates: a smile. In light of recent economic events, grads are deciding that their commencement isn't much of a milestone to celebrate. The paradigm has shifted once again to reveal a very different kind of emotion at these graduation ceremonies. It seems that graduating seniors are more discouraged when it comes time to turn their tassels then joyful--a feeling of dread and hesitation to walk across the stage into a very real economic crisis.’

So times are necessarily so dismal. Students will be happy, if not relieved to finally graduate. But now that I am experiencing this phenomenon firsthand, there’s always going to be a feeling of “dread and hesitation” when graduating, especially for those without a job lined up.

‘Those that are determined to find a job in this failing economic status are faced with the cliche rejection: "We're looking for more experience." Let me ask this: For those willing to work for little to nothing as long as it more-or-less pertains to their field of study, why aren't companies willing to create that experience than keep their minds closed to having it? Where is this experience supposed to come from? Why must students be judged solely by their electronic applications and rejected before any personal conversation? Answer: older citizens within the communities that have been laid off of their higher end jobs and are now willing to work the lower end jobs the college graduates should be filling. They have the experience that looks better on a shiny computer screen or crisp sheet of paper. Just goes to show how misdirected this economy has gotten in the last year and a half.’

The fact is, this is how it has been for much longer than the economy crash, and will be until the human race no longer needs to work for a living. Business is business, and employers want the best, most qualified worker to do the job right. How do employment candidates get this? Work. Plain and simple. No ifs, ands, or buts. No matter what the job is, graduates have to find a job to get the experience (any experience) that an employer wants. Also, with online spaces booming with activity and buzz every single second of the day, gone are the days where candidates hand in a paper application. It’s now become old-fashioned. Just send them an application online followed by an e-mailed thank you note.

‘Where are these students supposed to go? What is this teaching the generations, and new college classes, to come? Where will these students end up when they have yet to receive experience when the economy begins to get better? Maybe. . .they are all just out of luck. Tell me, where is the change?’

Sadly, it’s no where. Charles Darwin theorized the survival of the fittest. You have to be the best to survive. So prepare accordingly. Looking back, that is what I have decided college is for: learning skills and techniques to use out in the workforce and preparing for the hunt when you get there.

Bottom line, there’s no use in complaining. You could be using that time to find a job – even if the economy says there aren’t any. Find one, because we really don’t have a choice.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brieincapri.blogspot.com/2011/05/here-it-is-again-blog-from-my-past.html' title='Here it is again. Early last year, I began working on a personal website to add to my job hunting materials. Unfortunately, it's not quite ready, but I'm hoping to have it up and running within the next week. Regardless, the time has come for most of us to start opening our ears to the last minute advice people have about job hunting.

As I was perusing the Twitter realm, one of my professors tweeted this article, which I felt is very beneficial for anyone considering a personal website or trying to figure out what to do with their already existing one. Being a struggling graduate myself, I felt this was very appropriate for my generation, especially with the growing expectation of digital knowledge.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/27/jobs/27search.html?_r=1&src=tptw

This second link is another article I found via Twitter. I re-tweeted it earlier today, so I apologize if you are seeing it for a second time. In addition to the first, I also found its information to be extremely helpful to almost-grads. It spells out exactly what we need to be doing and looking for in the next several months. Hopefully, this will give us the leg up when sending out our applications.

http://www.monsterthinking.com/2011/04/07/jobsearch-tips-for-new-grads-standing-out-from-the-crowd/

Although I could consider you all my "competition," I am not the type of person to hold back useful information that could help you land a job (even though I find myself in that same position myself). If you liked these articles and would like to see more, don't hesitant to send me a comment or email to let me know. I'm finding a ton of really motivating pieces that I am willing to share to people who are willing to read. So, my fellow classmates, read on and prosper! May we all have jobs come graduation!

www.goodreads.com

I found this website one day and I have been in love with it ever since. If you are like me and forget which books you are wanting to read, or just want to share what you are reading with friends, it is a perfect website to do that.

First, Goodreads's database is HUGE! Every book you have ever wanted to find is included on their website, including a variety of editions for each. You can search books through book lists, reviews, ISBN numbers, etc.

When you have found the books you are looking for, Goodreads automatically organizes it into three categories (read, currently reading, to-read). If you have just finished a book, you can write a review or simply give it a quick five-star rating. No more accidently re-reading a book you have already completed! Also, you can add desired books to your "to-read" list. If these categories are not enough for you, you have the capability to make new lists to suit your hearts desire.

Are you thinking about reading a book, but are wanting more information about the plot and reviews it has gotten? No problem...

Even if this is not enough to you, there is a whole lot more that the application has to offer. For those who like to update their status on Facebook and Twitter, you have the same capabilites on Goodreads. Update where you are at in your book and let your friends know how it is going so far.

Still not enough? When you have finished reading your book, take some trivia questions about the novel. Sign up for book challenges, clubs, polls, and even giveaways for free books. If your in between books, that's okay, keep up with your friend's progress on their books and challenges. Do you maintain a blog? Do what I did, install a widget so your viewers can keep up with what you are reading.

Ladies and gents, the list goes on and on. Goodreads.com is immense in what it can do and extremely invaluable if you are an avid book reader. If your looking for another creative outlet online that's going to encourage your love of reading (instead of sucking away your time), I urge you to try it out. As it turns out, Google is returning their attention to Blogger for new and innovative ways to enhance the interactive blogging experience. Anil Sabharawal, Blogger's product manager, says bloggers should be "utilizing the full power of the modern web."

So, they have introduced a new "viewing option." For blogs hosted by Blogger, simply type "view" at the end of the the blog site's usual URL address. This will prompt a reader to Blogger's new interactive interface. It include five different types of platforms: Flipcard, Mosiac, Shapshot, Timeslide, and Sidebar. The reader has the ability to change these options on their own.

These options are not currently defaulted because it not completely customizable yet. Users may also disable this new feature if they would like. Ben Parr of Mashable reiterates Sabharawal stating, "the next quarter, you can expect these views to gain customizable backgrounds and fonts and be available as default templates."

As I have mentioned before, I am still trying to get acquainted with the blogosphere, so I have been doing some research on how to "blog effectively." One of the reoccurring themes was this: allow people to easily connect to your blog. Sounds simple enough.

Alright, tweet this: "Twitter followers, kindly visit my blog, http://brieincapri.blogspot.com. My latest stats of readership are beginning to sadden me. Much thanks." With a quick and proud dusting off of my hands, I had done what every good blogger does. Time to celebrate.

Fast forward. Today, approximately 3:10 P.M., I realized I needed a short break from my mentally taxing Management project. It was time to update my Twitter status; however, upon reaching the website, Twitter was down momentarily. Sad.

With time left on my break, I decided to turn my attentions back to my blog. It needed to be updated today. I reached yet another impasse. I couldn't think of anything, either useful or useless, to share with my followers. This did not come as a surprise to me since lately I have been plagued by a severe infestation of writer's block.

The time on my imaginary break timer was ticking. Just then, I saw my blog's "Stats" button. Curiosity struck. Did my easy tweet connectivity promotion work?

It did!

But I noticed a strange website that had visited me. I did not recognize the name, nor did it appear to have come from my Twitter plea. Who was this person? My curiosity heightened. Clicking on their link, I began an investigation only to be stopped short by a startling discovery. The culprit?

Okay, that's cool. I can live with that. But, I wonder, why? My neighboring blogs seem to have been around the blogging block for quite a while. What has made my modest little blog site impressive enough to be featured next to these veterans. Should I be proud or suspicious? Hmm.... I wonder.
Day after day, I would come home to find her on the couch basically nailed to her computer screen. She would be reading and re-reading PW's blog posts. Like any other increasingly frustrated sleep-deprived person, I was flipping through the channels trying to find something that would capture my attention. As I was scrolling, I stumbled across Amazing Wedding Cakes on WEtv.

I love these cakes shows, so it definitely sparked my interest. Then I thought, since this hobby is growing in popularity, why don't I post some amazing cakes on my blog?

The Man Your Man Could Smell Like has appeared again, and this time he is wearing a hula skirt. Ever wondered how these free-flowing commercials are produced?
This is a new video that Jen has created to "go virus " - AKA, viral. I thought it was entertaining and thought I would share it.
Good service. Excellent food. What about a classy and sophisticated atmosphere perfect for your french fry enjoyment?

In this video clip, all of those dreams will come true.

Before delving into the entertainment segment for today, let me give you a short personal history about how I am connected to this YouTube clip. These remarkable performers hail from my first Alma mater, Young Harris College, a school with students so charismatic and proud to play the tune of another drum. Who you are about to watch is an acapella group called the Compulsive Lyres that, obviously, fit that bill perfectly. Excuse the restaurant pun.

Traveling back a little further, I spent the majority of my high school career behind the counter of Chick-fil-a. I worked there for three years and I am still a religious customer. In fact, I ate it for lunch yesterday. Could it be any better than this video incorporates two big aspects of my life? I think not.

Enjoy.

P.S., I find it quite amusing that all of the people in the establishment continue to go about their meal as if this happens to them on a daily basis.
I am terrible at being a Christian." The sickening resemblance of this first line is what sucked me into Mad Max's personal anecdote of goodwill. I also must admit, I haven't been a very good Christian lately and found myself relating to his descriptions of his tale with haunting similarities.

His tale is inspiring and even harder to believe that it actually happened. So many of us only hear about these stories from other people, but it truly hits home when it happens to us (or someone we can so easily relate to). It's not fiction, it's life, which makes this so chilling.

I guess it's time to be a better Christian. It's time to put my priorities second and show some good-Christian-will to someone other than myself.
Thanks Max.
Its sophisticated and intelligent, but extremely relatable. Obviously, I'm a fan.

Recently, I found one of his articles entitled, "The Insiders Guide to Social Media Etiquette." He made many valid points of common faux pas of online space. For the people, like myself, that engross themselves in social networking and other forms of media, it was an extremely interesting article.
So, thank you again Chris. More great advice from the social media guru.
That's right. Teachers are actually being told not to partake in energizing activities and lessons in class because its risky. Let me backtrack.

Being an advocate for feedback, I wanted to give a few helpful suggestions on how a professor's class could be more engaging. More skill and activity, less lecture. Over time, I was actually surprised, given his flamboyant nature, that he did not have as much interaction in his classes before I approached him. Needless to say, it raised some suspicions. After further inquiry, it turns out that he did have plenty of creative ideas for the course! He went on and on about discussions, speeches, projects, skill building, workshops and so much more. I was shocked!

Then why aren't students partaking in those activities now? Why is there still a lecture style?

"Because I was told it was in my best interest to copy from another professor this semester."

Look, I get it. New teachers need guidance and a certain level of trial-and-error. Having ideas of grandeur may not always work out and certain material needs to be covered to fulfill the requirements of the class. Alright. But seriously, turning down their ideas for the sake of getting their feet wet? And by who - higher-ups that haven't seen their field of study in at least a decade. Which is why they are the higher-ups in education, right? Who knows, maybe they haven't stepped in a classroom in that long either. It's surely a possibility.

If you ask me, there is no winner with this situation. Stifling a professor's enthusiasm to teach students about their field with hands-on, engaging curriculum doesn't help their drive to educate, nor does it motivate the students to learn. To tell a professor that it isn't wise to "go big" isn't even a little bit fair to the students in the course. Instead, they will leave with the short end of the deal. And for what? Nothing.

Have we really lost what it means to get an education? It's about having knowledgeable members of our field of study teach students the information and skills they need for when they enter the workforce. If this is the case, lecture classes just aren't as effective as skill-building ones. Unmotivated teachers hardly have any impact on students. Where has education gone wrong?

As a student, I am appalled and downtrodden by this news. How many unmemorable classes have I gone through that I could have really enjoyed? How much more could I have learned? What did I have to sacrifice? If we all pay this much money to have a quality education, no one should be telling professors, or students for that matter, to suppress their creative in the sake of a traditional regiment.

What Brands are You?

Have you ever thought about it? What brands define your personality?

In my classes, I often think how we are all so surrounded by millions of brands. New ones are coming out of the woodwork everyday and people are constantly changing what (and whose) products they use. In this mass of different brands, everyone can probaby pick out two or three brands that play a huge role in your life. I'm not talking about Colgate because you use their toothpaste everyday. I'm talking about the brands that allow people to understand a little bit of who you are and identify with what you like and enjoy. Now some might say they don't associate with a brand. I don't buy this for one minute. Look at your television, your car, your computer, you home appliances, even your cereal. They are everywhere!

What brands are you? Be open-minded, take the challenge, and let me know what you come up with. An Ethical Dilemma.

After talking to my cousin, she told me that she wanted to get a tattoo - tomorrow. Although I realize it is her personal choice to do so, I find myself in a very delicate predicament. Since I am her family and understand she is going through a very emotional time in her life right now, do I try to sway her out of it?

Several years ago, I was in a phase when I wanted desperately to get a tattoo. Although I find tattoos to be perfectly fine and a unique way of expressing yourself, it wasn't for me during that time in my life. What I wanted wasn't so meaningful to me that I wanted to sketch it on my body permanently. After a good deal of time and logical thinking, that is what I discovered and I am happy with my decision I made. That is, until I find something I would want to have marked on me forever. But until then, I am satisfied.

In many ways, where I was at during that period of my life and where she finds herself now is very similiar. I would have regretted it - will she?

I have talked myself in, and then back out, of such a decision and I see her on heading along the same path. Needless to say, it's slippery ground. It makes me wonder where the fine line is between loving someone enough to stop them from making a bad decision, or loving them enough to let them make decisions on their own. Life is just so full of those tricky choices, isnt it?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brieincapri.blogspot.com/2011/02/so-you-wanna-get-tattoo-daunting.html' title='So You Wanna Get a Tattoo? A syndrome called Academic Remission. This is otherwise known as the inability to concentrate, participate, collaborate or complete their assignments prior to the designated time of merriment and joy off campus. This syndrome is a proven impediment of metal skill that subsides only after a period of warmth and happiness has occurred before returning back into dull routines of academia and societal responsibility.

After polling a small group of students, it is easy to figure most of the population between the ages of 15 and 25 are wriggling with impatience. Teachers everywhere are urged to renegotiate their lesson plans and schedules to accommodate this nationwide phenomenon. It is to be certain, however, this will not be permanent. April is predicted to be the appropriate month to return to normal educational activities.

Students, do not fear, spring break will soon be here - but it never comes quite fast enough now does it?

A Knee-Knocking Blast from the Past

I found this blog post I wrote two years ago hidden away in my hard drive. After re-reading it, I find some haunting similarities to what is still happening to today's college graduates, otherwise known as myself at this point.

Since it was so long ago, I was obviously naive to some important things regarding the work force and trying to finding a job, but it doesn't make it any less scary that this has been happening for so long, especially when dealing with such a nerve-racking experience.

When will this end? Someone please help us!

Has anyone noticed what this recent economy has been doing to the struggling college graduates of the 2009 class?

Amidst a crowed stadium full of caps, gowns, and tassels, one thing is missing among the sea of college graduates: a smile. In light of recent economic events, grads are deciding that their commencement isn't much of a milestone to celebrate. The paradigm has shifted once again to reveal a very different kind of emotion at these graduation ceremonies. It seems that graduating seniors are more discouraged when it comes time to turn their tassels then joyful--a feeling of dread and hesitation to walk across the stage into a very real economic crisis.

The current events surrounding our nation in the last several months have made finding a job nearly impossible for any scholar looking for work after they have received their degrees. I'm sure many people can relate to several personal anecdotes of students running into higher education and the military just to avoid the problematic workforce. Students, with good reason, feel it's necessary to run into more debt or signing the next six years of their lives away to the military.

Those that are determined to find a job in this failing economic status are faced with the cliche rejection: "We're looking for more experience." Let me ask this: For those willing to work for little to nothing as long as it more-or-less pertains to their field of study, why aren't companies willing to create that experience than keep their minds closed to having it? Where is this experience supposed to come from? Why must students be judged solely by their electronic applications and rejected before any personal conversation? Answer: older citizens within the communities that have been laid off of their higher end jobs and are now willing to work the lower end jobs the college graduates should be filling. They have the experience that looks better on a shiny computer screen or crisp sheet of paper. Just goes to show how misdirected this economy has gotten in the last year and a half.

Where are these students supposed to go? What is this teaching the generations, and new college classes, to come? Where will these students end up when they have yet to receive experience when the economy begins to get better? Maybe. . .they are all just out of luck. Tell me, where is the change?
