She was someone from outside of the town looking in, who pieced together a life with nature and not many people. A moving story, that does a good job of showing how people can react to people who are different from them. One of the best books I’ve ever read.

Mary Kay Andrews recent addition to her beach series is Beach Town. If you have enjoyed reading Andrew’s beach series then this is a must read.

We have just completed our first week of homeschool, and I wanted to share our curriculum choices with my readers. I think this is very helpful to those that are not satisfied with their current curriculum to have other options that are working for others. I have chosen to homeschool my children due to everything that is going on in the world today. Thankfully this is not my first experience homeschooling my children like so many families that have chosen to do so this school year. I homeschooled my daughters four years ago for a period of three years. Since this is not my first experience I know some of the tips to keeping from spending so much on curriculum. I have gone to second hand bookstores and traded books my children have out grown for either current or older curriculum. Most new homeschool families are unaware that older curriculum is still up to date only an older version (2nd edition vs 3rd edition). Also Facebook is an excellent resource to buy used curriculum. I purchased most of my current curriculum from other homeschool families on Facebook.

Second Grade Curriculum

ELA/Reading

I have selected Bob Jones University for my son’s ELA/Reading Curriculum. At level one you start off at a first grade reading level and by the time you finish the curriculum your child will be at nearly a 3rd grade reading level. Just remember if your child is coming from public school like mine are they may not be at the level of homeschool curriculum. Especially with the crazy 2019-2020 school year everyone had. I didn’t want my son to feel like homeschool was going to be too hard for him. All of the BJU Readers I consigned my children’s books for to off set the cost of the curriculum. I highly recommend the teachers editions to go with the BJU Curriculum.

Spelling

Since I felt as though my son was behind due to the crazy 1st grade year he had, and I wanted to reinforce how to sound out words correctly. By using All About Spelling my son is reminded of all the sounds each letter and letter families make. I feel like teachers do not have the time to go over each of these sound to where our children only are aware of one sound the letters make. We began school a week ago and my son had not been struggling as much as he was with reading.

Math

As for Math I was uncertain as to which curriculum to use so I got a variety; Saxon Math 5/4 (Tests and Worksheets), Houghton Mifflin Math Level 1, and Math-U-See: Foundations of Mathematics. I wasn’t sure how much math was covered during his 1st grade year so I picked a variety of curriculum to make sure we covered all of 1st grade and 2nd grade concepts.

5th Grade Curriculum

Reading

We are using Abeka for my 5th grader. I’ve always heard that Abeka’s curriculum is hard which is perfect for my daughter. She needs a curriculum that is going to challenge her. I questioned wether she needed to go up to 6th grade curriculum, but decided to keep her on a 5th grade level due to spending half of her 4th grade year at home.

ELA/Spelling

I chose to use Abeka’s Language, Spelling and Vocabulary as well. This way my daughter will be well rounded in grammar and spelling. I’m very pleased with this complete set. The Language B goes over a lot of the sentence structure that is often over looked in public school. I feel like this curriculum will cover anything she has yet to learn.

Science

If you have not heard of Apologia their science curriculum is worth looking into. I have used Botany in the past and wanted to try Exploring Creation with Zoology 1 for my 2nd and 5th grader. This curriculum allows us to work together as a family. Make sure to get the Junior Journal if your children are in elementary school. If you are homeschooling multiple children for the first time you understand how difficult it can be to teach on several different grade levels.

Social Studies

BJU Heritage Studies 5 is a great curriculum for learning about maps and all of the countries. This is another curriculum that both of my children will be working on together. In the state of South Carolina our children are tested on ELA, math, science and social studies except for the grades below 3rd. This way both of my children are learning about science and social studies, but I am focusing on my 5th grader.
