<title>Question Mark on the Lawn: Who Are We Really?</title>
<itunes:subtitle />
<itunes:author>Rev. D. Björn Olson</itunes:author>
<itunes:summary>By Rev. D. Björn Olson, recorded Sunday, 1 August 2010. We UUs have often made jokes about ourselves for years and one of them is about placing a burning question mark on a Unitarian Universalist lawn rather than a cross to show anger or dissatisfaction. Maybe it is not a joke. A question mark can indicate burning questions concerning social actions and a variety of other relevant topics. Or, it can indicate "who cares" or "we really don't know who we are nor what we believe." Rev. Olson will talk about the importance of the Unitarian Universalist church with an exclamation point on who we are and the history of what we have become. A challenge to all UUs.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>By Gil Osgood, recorded Sunday, 3 Octobe 2010 This sermon is subtitled "The gift of an empty box." We will be discussing how traditional religious language, like "prayer," "worship" and "soul," may still have something to say to us even if those words seem to have lost all their meaning and evoke only negative emotions when we hear them spoken. We will look at what atheists and theists may have in common and consider what it is that is really important to believe.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>By Anna Sontag, recorded Sunday, 13 March 2011. As this church grapples with the truth of its "program" size and its move downtown from our sheltered woodland, what inspiration or advice may we glean from spiritual and transformational sources? Our journeys of individual growth seem to continue whether or not we willingly participate. We like to reason things out, plan, and take charge - but sometimes our plans confound our progress. Thich Nat Hahn reminds us to move from the concepts and ideas in our heads to our attention in the present moment. Such a shift may bring us to a surprise regarding the true nature of our beings.</itunes:summary>

<title>Standing In Our Own Truth</title>
<itunes:subtitle />
<itunes:author>Rev. Alicia Forsey, Ph.D.</itunes:author>
<itunes:summary>By Rev. Alicia Forsey, Ph.D., recorded Sunday, 20 November 2011. The state of the economy has changed the way many of us think about what is important. Faced with the knowledge that what we used to consider security may not hold up under the strain of corporate greed and other evils -- resulting in unemployment, foreclosures, credit debt and a declining middle class, we know it is imperative that we value and nurture a support system made up of relatives, friends and colleagues. With support we are removed from isolation. We know our fears are shared. We know our own truth is the truth of countless others.</itunes:summary>

<title>Zeus Without a Golden Chariot: Humanity's Evolutionary Path</title>
<itunes:subtitle />
<itunes:author>Anna Sontag</itunes:author>
<itunes:summary>By Anna Sontag, recorded Sunday, 4 December 2011. Inspired by the reflections of Paul Blackburn, we consider the opportunities available that support us feeling like Zeus...even when the floor falls out from under us, when things look bleak, and even when the sun shines in our lives. What new reflexes can we build in our hearts, minds, and bodies to make best use of the infinitely complex, perfectly evolved beings we are, through the combined miracles of evolution and our free will? Perspectives from the new millennium converge with some from several millennia ago.</itunes:summary>

The Shamanic process of “dismemberment” can show us at an archetypal level what human beings go through when things fall apart. What happens when we are “dis-membered” and then we “re-member” ourselves? <itunes:summary>By Rev. Alicia Forsey, Ph.D., recorded Sunday, 29 January 2012. The Ox herding Pictures depict stages of life that we pass through, beginning with emptiness and going through life's stages until emptiness is reached again. These are ancient, and though they are traditionally from the Buddhist tradition, the message is universal. What, if anything, has happened over time to make the various stages of life less clearly defined than what we find in these pictures? Each depiction in the original pictures respected every stage of life as what was (at the time) appropriate and expected. Do we have this kind of clarity and respect for each stage of life today?</itunes:summary>

Tim Tebow, the Quarterback of the Denver Broncos, has ignited a national debate about prayer, and whether it belongs in football and public life in America. After scoring a touchdown, Tebow bows to one knee, lowers his head, and places it on his fist. Is this simple, yet camera-worthy prayerful pose a gesture of self-aggrandizement? A jab at other faiths? Is it a tactical move in a larger political war? Or is it just a humble expression of faith and gratitude? And why does it raise such glowing praise and angry condemnation from those who see it?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>By Rev. Alicia Forsey, Ph.D., recorded Sunday, 19 February 2012. Beautiful Eugene, nestled in a green valley with much to recommend itself. Around the edges of the city limits, what is there? Around the edges of each area within the city, what is distinct? As visitors or new residents come to Eugene, how welcome are they as they cross the edge of the city intending to spend some real time here? Historically, where are the edges that remain in the shadows?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Sermon by Rev. Alicia Forsey, Ph.D., recorded Sunday, 26 February 2012. When we find our way through external obstacles to a place of clarity, with the help of a teacher, a guide or our own patience and reflection on our lives, we are seeking the gold of consciousness where all of the knots we have tied in our inner and outer lives are undone and we are free. Listen and consider how we create knots and how we can start undoing them.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Message by Jerry Russell with an introduction by Rev. Alicia Forsey, Ph.D., recorded Sunday, 11 March 2012, titled "Memory and Forgetting." The Science of how our brains work is a field familiar to UUCE member Jerry Russell. This morning he will share some of his research. Fascinating discoveries! If we did not remember what we experience, where would we find meaning? If we remembered everything, would we be able to function, or would we be completely overwhelmed? Do we forget some things in order to survive? Rumi said that he had been forgetful for sixty years, but not for a second has this flowing toward me stopped or slowed.</itunes:summary>

<title>Building a Sanctuary</title>
<itunes:subtitle />
<itunes:author>Rev. Alicia Forsey, Ph.D.</itunes:author>
<itunes:summary>Sermon by Rev. Alicia Forsey, Ph.D., recorded Sunday, 18 March 2012, titled Building a Sanctuary. A sanctuary is a place of silence. When words are spoken in a true sanctuary, they come after a time of quiet reflection on the inner sanctuary of the self. As UUCE prepares to move to a new location, the question of what will be different in our new sanctuary looms large. To do the kind of outreach we hope to do, we need to be intentional about creating a space where we can be alone while being together. In being silent together, we learn more deeply about who we are together, as well as who we are individually. Silence at the current location may last for two minutes during the meditation. Do we hope for something different in our new sanctuary? What is the foundation of a sanctuary, and what are the building blocks?</itunes:summary>
