Melodic pop-punk outfit Southcott formed in Rockland County, NY, in late 2001. Originally looking for a replacement player for their existing group, Southcott was born after guitarist Mike Bateman and drummer John Damiano recruited a friend on the local scene, Chris Pennings, as
their bassist. Later, Pennings became the group's vocalist instead. The guys recorded an EP in 2003 for Rock Out Records entitled The Lost Art of Saying Goodbye. On the road for most of 2005, they signed with Seattle's Less Avenged Records that July, while also contributing the track "Apple Shampoo" to Pacific Ridge's blink-182 tribute album. Lineup changes occurred through the years, and by the time Southcott had finished recording their debut full-length, bassist Mike "Trix" Morina and guitarist Mike Sullivan had completed the band. The five-piece next signed with the Cleveland-based Universal imprint Rust Records in December 2005. Citing influences for their brand of "happy music" from Bright Eyes to the Beatles to NOFX, Flee the Scene was jointly released by Rust and Less Avenged in early February 2006. The band hit the road hard nationwide in support; by the year's end, Southcott was down to a quartet with Sullivan and Bateman gone, and guitarist Jordan Eckes signed on in their place. Though the buzz around Southcott was continually growing, especially with their relentess touring regime, the group suddenly dissolved in February 2007; a few members resurfaced soon after in Thieves and Villains. Answer quick"All Ages Show." What the first thing that comes to mind? It most likely spiky-haired 13 year olds running in packs, colors dripping down the back of their necks from day-of-show dye jobs. Probably not melody loving high school kids and
college students freely intermingling with a subdued contingent of work-a-day thirty-somethings. It not what you would have guessed, but that exactly what you find when Southern California quintet Something Corporate takes the stage.

And, while on the topic of assumptions, you probably assume that your average teenager in a band might cite Limp Bizkit or Sum 41 as their major influences. Not so with Something Corporate 18 year old frontman and chief songwriter Andrew McMahon. He explains, "I love the great 0s Elton John, where he was at the best part of his youth, writing angst-filled songs."

As his love for the legendary Elton John would suggest, Andrew weapon of choice has 88 keys. While that might suggest that piano is featured more in any given song, Andrew insists that egos have always taken a back seat to the good of the music. "Whatever feels right, we do," he states. "Sometimes you just suck it up and say, ey, I don belong on this one. And with two guitarists in the mix, Something Corporate is hardly what you would call a piano-centered band. Andrew explains, "Ie always been a fan of a more driving sound, blending guitar with piano chords." After careful listens one notices other influences like Jimmy Eat World and Jets To Brazil in the mix.

In addition to this musical blend, what endears people most is Andrew off-beat notes on love, relationships and being a member of Generation Y observations that frequently belie his chronological age and appearance. In "Punk Rock Princess," Andrew dissects the desire to love a cool girl and to be her "garage band king." He asks her, "You could tell me why you just don fit in and how youe 'gonna be something" In "iF yoU C Jordan," he describes an on-going, relentless assault by a misguided high school bully, who can seem to accept that he no longer in High School. The song taunts, "its jealousy that led us to this song. Won play it often, just at least until youe gone." And, they meant it, that is they meant it until the song ended up on the EP.

If finding the perfect sound and words for each song is a painstaking process, one thing that has been surprisingly easy from the start for Something Corporate has been finding gigs.

"About a year before we were Something Corporate, Andrew, Brian, and I started a band to play the high school battle of the bands in Dana Hills," explains bassist Clutch of his band beginning. "We ended up winning on a fluke. We were horrible, but everybody was pretty horrible, too." The victorious group disbanded, but after Andrew stumbled upon Josh jamming on his guitar at a party, the pianist desire to play in a band was renewed. "You don find a lot of really great high school players," says Andrew. "I saw Josh, and I was like, ow, he really knows how to play. With a new name, a new lineup, and a new sense of purpose, Something Corporate met with little resistance.

"That summer we decided to kick it into gear. We set up a show at a local theater, and ended up selling 150 or 200 tickets, packing a bunch of kids in there," recalls Clutch. "We called the local club a couple weeks later, told them what we did, and they said if we could sell that many tickets we could definitely play at their club. That started it."

From there, the unlikely assemblage of teenagers quickly became local favorites, and landed one-off opening slots with acts like Sugar Ray and Better Than Ezra. It should be no surprise, then, that record labels soon came knocking. Perhaps more surprising, though, is that the most persistent of these was Drive-Thru, a label best known for youth-oriented punk.

"As you can probably assume from listening to the music, our punk sensibility is not necessarily intact," Andrew laughs. Nonetheless, Drive-Thru track record of artist development made signing with the label a no-brainer. Besides, Andrew points out, "They sign cool bands and connect with kids in a way that not many record labels do."

"People who listen to radio songs tend to like our band because we write choruses with hooks, so wel always have a pop crowd," he continues. "But, because of our association with Drive-Thru, maybe a kid who wouldn normally listen to a band like us might give it a shot and hear something they like." Andrew also notes that immersion in the culture of Drive-Thru bands and fans may have led to a gutsier sound for the newer material, but, Something Corporate isn about to trade in the upright piano.

"Musically, my goal in life has always been to touch people the way that first Counting Crows record did to me," says Andrew. "People tend to underestimate what kids will comprehend and what theyl connect to. I think the more honest I am with myself, the more people get it."

"And regardless of whether or not people always get it," he concludes, "theyl definitely get that wee not just spitting out bullshit."

Search the City is an alternative/punk band from Detroit, Michigan. In 2006, their debut EP Ghosts was released. They were signed to Tooth & Nail Records and released their new debut album A Fire So Big The Heavens Can See It on April 1, 2008. The band toured with groups such as Run Kid Run, A Dream Too Late, Dr. Manhattan, Ivoryline, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Breathe Carolina, and
Panima. A Fire So Big the Heavens Can See It charted at No. 46 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. As of 2011, the band is back together and writing music again. The Search the City Facebook page was "Not under the control of the band," until they regained access on February 27, 2012. On June 19, 2012, the band released a YouTube video called "Search The City is alive!". In this video the band announced a new demo, which will be released on June 27. They also announced that there has been a bandmember change. In the video they introduce the 21 year old Travis Bobier as the new vocalist of the band, taking the place of former vocalist Josh Frost, Chris Jenkins replacing former drummer Adam McMillion, and Joe Marks taking a permanent place of former full time bassist's Jim Baired, and temp bassist's Eli Clark and Brandon Ellis. On June 27, 2012, Search the City released two demos produced my Alan Reitman, "Watch the Stars Fall" and "Rewrite the Ending" on Facebook. They also created and released a lyric video on YouTube for both demos. After releasing these demos, the band plans on touring and recording a new record.

Scenes from a Movie members Tony Bush and Jon Ewing were friends in high school, but
Ewing attended the University of Charleston while Bush went to college at Bowling Green. Ewing, together with guitarist Luke Del Papa, then convinced Bush to drop out of school, and the group expanded to a quintet, choosing the name Scenes from a Movie. Adding Jared Miller on drums and Adam Triplett on bass the group started touring, soon finding slots opening for groups such as The Starting Line, Thursday, and Boys Like Girls. They signed to East West Records subsidiary, One Big Spark, in 2006, and continued touring, playing at Warped Tour 2007 and then opening for Permanent ME and The Junior Varsity. Their debut LP, The Pulse, was released on July 24, 2007, which garnered comparisons to Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco. They were named SPIN Band of the Day on September 14, 2007. On October 2, 2007, Tony Bush and Adam Triplett announced their departure from the band. The band later split up.

Run Kid Run is a Christian pop/rock band from Carmi, Illinois and Morganfield, Kentucky, formed in 2006. Their debut album This Is Who We Are, was released on May 18, 2006 through Tooth & Nail Records. All of the members, except Paul Stewart, were originally from punk rock band Side Walk Slam on Tooth & Nail Records. The video for
the song "We've Only Just Begun" was featured on the American Eagle music video store soundtrack after its release. The band's second album titled Love at the Core was released on April 29, 2008. Both albums were produced by James Paul Wisner. The song Freedom, from their Love at the Core album, has recently become a hit song on the Christian radio station Air 1. They recently finished working in the studio with Mark Lee Townsend and Matt Thiessen on their newest album Patterns, that was released November 15, 2011.

Beginning with the band in 1999, Francesco Grasso (vocals, guitars) and Alessandro Mita (guitars) rehearsed with a series of crews before deciding to assemble their own squad. It was still in 2000 that the band recorded their first 6 tracks promo, with the monicker "Black Thorns Lodge". This Promo 2000 was trying to combine and interpret different influences raging from gothic and Swedish metal to 80s pop and wave. Promo 2000, although still naive, allowed Francesco and Alessandro to gain them the attention of both audience and critics (demo of the month on the Italian top magazine Psycho!, elected among the

three best Italian young bands by the Psycho! readers, together with bands as Lacuna Coil and Linea77). Instantly, the cult label My Kingdom Music showed his interest in having this newborn creature on his roster. But Alessandro and Francesco didnt feel satisfied with what Black Thorns Lodge was becoming. They felt the need to totally evolve both musically and lyrically. So, at the end of 2001, they simply decided to let the Black Thorns Lodge die, and to restart a new adventure with the new monicker ROOM WITH A VIEW. "The change of our monicker had the symbolic meaning of a rebirth for us", Francesco says."When we were still called Black Thorns Lodge, we felt that the music we played and also our monicker were not so personal as we wanted them to be. We needed to escape from cliches, to open ourselves on new and stimulating horizons... "Room with a View", that's it. I like to think about a dynamic view, something like an emotional kaleidoscope". My Kingdom Music had the insight to realize the potential this band held, and the guys were quickly signed and put in the studio to record their debut album, "First Year Departure". Recorded during 2002, and released in 2003, "First Year Departure", with its passionate mood, its vintage soundscapes and its retro-futuristic spirit, has gathered not only an instant fan base, but critical acclaim on the main international magazines and webzines. The drums parts for this record were handled by Fabio Cappabianca, coming from previous experiences in some of the best Italian hardcore bands such as Face the Fact, Purification and Dehumanize. "Most of the stuff on our debut album has been composed in very little time, like an irrational and raving stream of consciousness", Alessandro says. "It's a journey of imbalance into the daydreaming minds of four melancholic young men", Francesco adds. "In "First Year Departure" there's a deep sense of uneasiness. But it's life itself that's uneasy: behind the joy of a discovery there's always the bitterness of parting".

Since their debut album release, the band didnt stop for a single moment, constantly confronting with line-up changes, but always working and maturing in their capabilities, with hard work and extreme dedication. Until summer of 2004, when they finally flew to Örebro, Sweden, to work with the famous producer Jens Bogren on their second effort, in one of the finest studios in Europe, the renowned Fascination Street Studio (Millencolin, Katatonia, Opeth, Soilwork, Pain of Salvation, Deep Insight, Disco Ensemble, etc.).

With their debut album, RWAV have created a sound that was quite unique and unambiguously their own. Still, with their new "Collecting Shells at Lighthouse Hill", starts a brand new beginning. With their basis built strongly from their previous achievements, RWAV have ventured to progress as well. The result is an astonishing mixture of modern rock aggressiveness combined with solid songwriting and strong melodies. Permanent Me first formed while its members were in high school, first as "The Madison Chase", then "Crown Victorian", and then thirdly as "Yes, Virginia". The group benefited from online promotion on sites such as MySpace, and after catching the ear of Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley and producer Matt Squire, Yes, Virginia signed to independent label I Surrender Records. The group changed its name to
Permanent Me after legal issues with a band with the same name from NYC. They then recorded their first EP, Dear Virginia, which came out in May 2006.Later in 2006 the group signed to Island Records subsidiary Stolen Transmission and released their first full-length, After the Room Clears, early in 2007. After the release of their CD bassist Justin Morrell announced he was leaving Permanent Me and later joined the band Big City Lights. Justin was replaced with Mike's cousin Arthur. In November 2007 it was announced that Mike and Arthur were leaving Permanent Me. In January 2008 Permanent Me released a new demo on their Myspace, and were writing a new record. Permanent Me decided in March 2008 to disband go their separate ways. Brian has now formed The Revue with ex-members of The Blue Scene Matt McAuliffe & Anthony Polzella & Drummer Rob Rudkin Mike is now drumming for Nightmare of You. Arthur now plays bass for Ryan Star, The Hate My Day Jobs, The The The Thunder and other artists in the NYC area.

Hawaii is known for many things: colorful shirts, amazing surf and tropical weather. This state is not typically known for producing powerful rock music, until now. “Stand close, I’m about to explode!” sings Danny Casler, front-man for
National Product. You will not find a more appropriate lyric befitting the universal power and potential that Luna, the band's debut release, brings to the forefront of Rock. Luna will arrive in 2007 just in time to change the course of your summer. National Product began as a group of friends from the island of Oahu. As band-mates and creative partners, they became a tight family of brothers, committed to their musical vision and their desire to touch as many lives as possible. With such lofty goals, they soon realized that they needed a broader base than what was available to them on the island: “I think the underground community that we had was very special; it was tight knit and everyone knew everyone else—all the bands that grew up out of that were like family members,” Danny explains about Hawaii’s music scene, which is best known for traditional and reggae music. “There are a lot of great bands here, but none have ever had mainstream success because it’s really difficult to crossover to the States,” adds drummer Rob Caveney. “They either grow content with where they are or give up once they realize how difficult it is to leave. I feel like National Product is one of the first bands to go on this journey. That is huge for us because it’s not something that happens every day.” These dedicated artists moved to Southern California in 2001 and have diligently applied their 'do-it-yourself' hard work ethic to reach their goals every day. Danny Casler, Rob Caveney, guitarists Stan Moniz and Jeff Feuerhaken, bassist Nathan Elliot and keyboardist Dan Niles have constantly pushed themselves by booking their shows and touring the US, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as the entire country of Mexico. They performed a number of dates on the Vans Warped Tour and have shared the stage with well known acts including New Found Glory, Yellowcard, Rise Against and Saosin. And before anyone realized the power and potential of Myspace, National Product developed a huge presence with a continually growing fan-base and quickly surpassed 1,000,000 plays and more than 100,000 friends as an unsigned band. With a sound that can be compared to The All-American Rejects, Third Eye Blind, and The Fray, My Favorite Highway's upbeat and melodically driven pop rock has developed into something that the world of pop music hasn't seen for a while.

Two brothers and two cousins from Fairfax, Virginia formed the band in January of 2005. Great bands are defined by great songs; and in the
age of MTV and a constantly changing music industry great songs are hard to come by. It is this groups ability to compose great songs that will define their success. My Favorite Highway has set themselves apart from the mass of indie rock and trendy pop punk bands that occupy the modern rock scene. Featuring ex-members of PERFECTLY NORMAL from the Toronto area, Kenny Bridges, Mark Bowser, Peter Krpan and Chris Hughes joined together in late spring of 1999 to form .moneen. Later on Mark moved onto synthesizing Mexican children out of raw DNA, then moved in Chris Slorach to take his place. Two memorable years together and Chris Slorach parted with .moneen. Farmiliar friend Erik Hughes picked up the bass once again, having filled-in for Mark on their first tour ever.

Playing what they like to call
"the collaboration of melodic influence", they conduct their own experiments into the world of aggressive melodic pop. Using influences such as Failure, Hum, Eric's Trip and Choke to capture their sound, while then using classical and jazz influences to make it their own. Musical influence as well as ethical influence came from their roots in the local suburb Punk/Hardcore scenes, giving them an independent stance propped up by elements of DIY.

Over the past four years now .moneen. have been writing music and performing across Canada and the USA. As the result of their efforts combined with luck, and the helping hands of friends, .moneen. have traveled and performed across Canada over four times, played the Northeastern and East Coast USA a number of times, and have toured the periphery of the United States of America. Most notably, .moneen. have been fortunate enough to tour with bands such as Face To Face, Taking Back Sunday, and The Get Up Kids. More and more they are becoming known for thier empassioned live performances that often reach a near-violent fervor. Invoking spontonaety and imrovisation they are the kind of band that strive to make each show a little different.

With one CD/EP Smaller Chairs for the Early 1900's (Smallman Records), and one CD/LP The Theory of Harmonial Value (Smallman/Hopeless Records), .moneen. have seen sucess that few Canadian indie bands experience. June 2003 will see their second full lenth release
Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now? on Vagrant Records worldwide, and Smallman Records in Canada.

Still new to the scene, .moneen. will not hesitate to grow as a band and strive towards new goals. They will progress with passion, and will always keep fresh in their minds that this is their "collaboration of melodic influence".

Welcome to Ever After. A fairytale and a single, 54 minute track stitched from 12 discrete songs—the most audacious songs Marianas Trench has ever crafted. Ever After is constructed around a story written by Ramsay himself and then finessed into an accompanying booklet. It’s an actual physical experience; a warm throwback to the album era when your music was more than a bunch of orphaned songs sitting on an endless iPod playlist.

It’s also the project that captures Marianas Trench at
a soaring artistic peak. After the breakthrough of Masterpiece Theatre in 2009 and a lot of ensuing months on the road, Ramsay and bandmates Ian Casselman, Mike Ayley, and Matt Webb were eager to start recording again. They finally settled into Ramsay’s studio to begin work on their next theatrical masterpiece by the end of 2010.

“All the songs live on their own as songs, but they also serve the purpose of telling the story throughout the record,” he explains. As for the seamless hour-long symphony he constructed, Ramsay adds, “I wanted to do that on the last record but as a writer I wasn’t ready. I had to step it up, which is also why I decided to produce Ever After on my own. If this is all gonna tie together, then you really need to see it through yourself.”

The tale itself concerns the heartless Queen Carolina, the exiled King, and the stolen heart of his daughter Porcelain. We’re lowered into this barren and heartless Toyland through the title track; a sweeping epic that makes good on Ramsay’s promise that “some things are really over on the top” on Ever After. “It sounds like a chase scene,” he says. “I was, like, ‘If we're gonna do this, we're gonna do this right. We're gonna need 50 string players.' ”

After that Michael Bay-sized opener, we get what you might call the basic working unit of Ever After. “Haven’t Had Enough” has a lean ‘80s funk edge to it, as do skin-tight tracks like “Desperate Measures”, “B Team”, and the amazing “Stutter”, but with Ramsay’s jones for the Beach Boys and Queen-calibre vocal arrangements crash into something with the dimensions of Thriller-era Michael Jackson.

Ramsay is also playing up the underused R&B side of his voice on Ever After, turning the epic power ballad “By Now” into an emotional workout, soaring over the krushed groove of “Fallout”, and generally manifesting his inner soul man all over the place. It’s acrobatic work, but he was keen to push himself. “I like to sing in that style,” he says, “it’s something I really enjoy, but it’s gonna be a challenge live, for sure.”

“Truth or Dare” makes an even bolder statement with its choppy flamenco parts and a hook that sounds like a Maori singing backwards, but nothing touches “No Place Like Home” for outlandishness and high-flying ambition. On this climactic track, the band wraps up the third act of the story with a whirlwind battle and epilogue, piling stacked vocals on top of multiple switch-ups and fake-outs, making an end run through Brian May guitar and a touch of the Who’s “Baba O’Riley” before hitting a blockbuster-sized finish and a final, sweet coda played on a harp and a child's music box.

It’s insane. And brilliant. And it puts the cherry on top of Marianas Trench’s mad, multi-media vision. What Marianas Trench has done with Ever After is create the story and soundtrack to a dark Tim Burton rock opera that hasn’t been made yet.

The story starts in the very same place that it does for most bandsbegin recording demos, show demos around, label interest heats up, finish album, talk to labels, think some more about it, sign in blood, begin touring endlessly on said album. But its here where the differences between LoveHateHero and the rest of the bands today start to show. Three days before the band's 4th major tour on their first album, three of the members leave. Including BOTH guitar players. One of the guitar players even takes the Van with him. And all of the sudden, there were only two members left. Faced with the decision (and challenge) to either throw in the towel, or try and find a way to
keep going, Paris and Pierrick chose the latter. To them, it was an easy decision in the face of the worst of circumstances. And that decision has come to define this band as a band who does not stop, give in, skip shows, forget fans names, or by any other means, back down in the face of adversity. Brand new van's gone? Fine. We'll dump the bank accounts, bust out the circular saw, and take the road in a bunked-out former city transit van. What's that about fried trailer axles, tires, fuel injectors? Who cares. Its time to rock. You can be guaranteed if something out there gets in the way of this band making it to the next show, they are going to find a way around it, or through it. And when they get to town and hit the stage, nothing matters anymore but the rock. Not how many kids are there, not how sick they are of one another, nothing. Guitar players want to stay home and cuddle with their chicks? Fine, with a couple phone calls from their drummer Scott Gee, a schooled musician and drummer since the age of 7, and a wink and a nod from the universe, Mike Russell shows up ready to jump in the band and leave home forever. Couple weeks into the tour, with a good natured Canadian filling in on second guitar, they roll into another faceless club in upstate New York, only to find guitar whiz Kevin Gruft warming up for his local band - except his warmup sounds like George Dokken battling EVH. The boys immediately lock him in their sights, and following his graduation from high school, fly him out to Los Angeles to start working on the 2nd album. This is how LoveHateHero gets it done - full-on commitment to the cause and connection with every living soul they play for. This is a band on the mission to bring their music as hard as possible to any stage that will have them. LostAlone are a British rock band from Derby, Derbyshire that has been active since 2005. The band currently consists of Steven Battelle (lead vocals, guitar), Alan Williamson (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Mark Gibson (drums, percussion, backing vocals). To date, LostAlone have released two albums, Say No to the World (2007) and I'm a UFO in This City (2012).

Since their inception, LostAlone have toured in the UK and mainland Europe supporting a number of major artists such as Enter Shikari, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, and 30 Seconds to Mars on their Into the Wild Tour, as well as completing several European headline tours. They have also made appearances at festivals such as Taste of Chaos, Give it a Name, Download, Reading, T in the Park, Oxegen and Rock am Ring. They were signed to Island Records. The band cites their Christian beliefs as the reason they got together. The name Letter Kills comes from Second Corinthians 3:6 - "for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." Their first album, The Bridge, was released July 2, 2004, selling around 202,000+ copies. They toured the United States, with Story of the Year as part of the Nintendo Fusion Tour and on
the Van's Warped Tour they also where the opening act for the band The Used in the winter of 2005. They have also toured with The Used, Lostprophets, My Chemical Romance, Three Days Grace and many other bands. While recording their followup to The Bridge, guitarist Dustin Lovelis left the band to form The Fling, and the band soon broke up in 2006 . They cited the cause of their breakup as lack of artistic freedom with their label. After the band broke up, lead singer Matthew Shelton returned to his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas where he started a new band called Teleo. Lead guitarist Timothy Cordova moved back to Utah and got his Masters Degree, and shortly after became a middle school Language Arts teacher. Cordova currently plays guitar for The Rock Music. In 2008 Matt Shelton became the permanent lead singer of the band The Wedding replacing Kevin Keihn. There is currently no word if the band Teleo is going to be in works. July 2009 Lead singer Matthew James started to promote his new acoustic solo project Hotel Spangler with the album Dead and Done.

Emo-rocking pop-punk act Just Surrender formed in 2003, originally dubbed A Second Chance. The group sprang up around high-school buddies bassist/vocalist Jason Maffucci, guitarist Andrew Meunier, and drummer Steve Miller before the search for a suitable fourth member eventually ended with the addition of guitarist/vocalist Dan Simons. Based out of Dover Plains, NY, the crew recorded a four-song EP with producer John Naclerio (Brand New, Senses Fail), and
within months of posting some songs online, their music had logged nearly half a million listens and their tradeoff vocals earned the band comparisons to Taking Back Sunday. As gigs at the Chance Theater in nearby Poughkeepsie were getting visibly bigger, fellow New Yorkers Autopilot Off took notice and brought the young group out on tour. This quickly led to other higher-profile shows with bands like Bayside, Hawthorne Heights, Matchbook Romance, the Early November, and more. In March 2005, A Second Chance inked a deal with Broken English Records -- co-owned by Naclerio and Autopilot Off's Chris Hughes -- and changed their name to Just Surrender (due to trademark concerns) soon after. Jawbreaker was an American punk band from San Francisco, California, from 1988 to 1996. The band also had roots in Los Angeles, where members Blake Schwarzenbach and Adam Pfahler attended Crossroads High School together, and New York City, where Schwarzenbach and Pfahler met bass player Chris Bauermeister at New York University in 1988. The band put its DIY ethos into practice by managing themselves.

Jawbreaker released four full-length studio albums between 1990 and 1995 as well as a number of EPs, 7 inches and splits. Even though they were signed to a major record label for their final album Dear You, Jawbreaker failed to achieve much commercial success during their years of recording and performing. The band split up in 1996 and members of Jawbreaker went on to form or feature in several bands since then. In January 2008, Pfahler announced that the band had recently reunited for an upcoming documentary.

History

Unfun (1989-1990)

Unfun, Jawbreaker's first LP was recorded in Venice, California, and released in 1990. It is a combination of pop-influenced punk and DC-influenced hardcore. However, unlike contemporary "pop-punk", Unfun has a dark quality and a maturity emblemized by its
literary aspirations. While many bands at the time were willing to settle for pat social commentary, Jawbreaker pushed its lyrics, emphasizing depth and resonance.

Brief hiatus and Bivouac (1991-1992)

Jawbreaker went on hiatus from late 1990 to early 1991 while members of the band finished college. Upon reforming, they relocated to San Francisco's Mission District. Around this time that they began to gather a following at 924 Gilman Street, a Berkeley venue. The band immediately began to write songs for a new album, Bivouac, which was recorded in 1991. The album was a sprawling epic?it featured slower, gloomier songs than "Unfun", as well as more complex arrangements. While the CD release of the album had its share of poppy moments the remainder of the album gravitated toward lush, dark songs punctuated by instrumental breakdowns infusions of call-and-response interplay among the three band members. Almost a period piece, the instrumentation and record quality has the watermark of late '80s/early '90s indie music. Largely, this was a very ambitious effort for the band and, unfortunately, according to many critics, largely fell short of its ambitions.

The vinyl release's track layout - as a whole - boasts a considerably darker demeanor than the CD version (which included the "Chesterfield King" EP.)

24 Hour Revenge Therapy (1993-1994)

Touring relentlessly in support of "Bivouac", Schwarzenbach's raspy vocal stylings finally caught up with him, requiring throat surgery. After Schwarzenbach's surgery the band recorded 24 Hour Revenge Therapy, released in 1994. The bulk of the album was recorded by well known indie producer Steve Albini (though it is officially credited to Albini's cat, Fluss). The liner notes to the "Etc." compilation, note that Albini charged the band $1,032 for recording the album.

Not only had Blake's singing become slightly less raspy on "24 Hour Revenge Therapy", but the band's songs had also become shorter and more imbued with a festive elation than those on Bivouac.

In the midst of the writing/recording process for the album, the band embarked on their "When It Pains, It Roars" tour. Growing criticism from core fans, especially after the band played a few dates in late 1993 with major label superstar Nirvana, left Jawbreaker disillusioned. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is largely heralded as Jawbreaker's crowning achievement. Its songs encapsulate the range of emotions and specific experiences of many of the educated but working-class population that largely comprised Jawbreaker's fanbase.

Dear You and break up (1995-1996)

After the success of 24 Hour Revenge Therapy, Jawbreaker signed with Geffen Records and worked with producer Rob Cavallo, who had received acclaim producing Green Day's breakthrough album Dookie. Dear You was a stark departure from the harder edge of their earlier recordings. Blake's singing and the guitar sound were cleaner. Cavallo gave the album a "radio-friendly" polish their previous albums lacked. The band had mixed feelings about this new sound and major label atmosphere. Adam and Blake talked extensively about the benefits of self-managing their band and how major labels spelled financial death for many bands. Adam and Blake's views are epitomized in their comments in Maximum Rock and Roll's major labels issue.

Nevertheless, Blake has stated that this album kept the band alive, as they were on the verge of breaking up after 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. Despite a vigorous marketing push by Geffen, album sales for Dear You were anemic in the wake of a post-Green Day market and failed to come close to those of their previous albums. However, the album was a critical success, bringing Jawbreaker's artistic maturity to a new audience. In 2004, the members of the group reacquired the rights to Dear You and successfully put the long out-of-print album back into circulation with additional tracks, including a more polished version of "Boxcar", an interactive copy of their only music video ("Fireman"), and updated liner notes that include a picture of Kurt Cobain wearing a Jawbreaker t-shirt. Their hit "Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault" was included on EA Sports video game NCAA Football 06The most dramatic, yet semi-secret result of the "Dear You" release period was a show Jawbreaker played in Los Angeles, Ca. at the Roxy on Sunset in September 1995. To their surprise the mostly industry crowd included George Harrison and Tom Petty who were both out to hear their favorite "punk" band live. Harrison joined Blake on guitar for a high rock version of "Accident Prone" while Petty harmonized on vocals adding a long Fender piano riff to the tune. George was adamant in his praise for the band's essential working class ethic. Petty claimed to be inspired by the energy and promised to record his own version of "Bivouac."

After Dear You was released in September 1995, the band soldiered on for another year before calling it quits. One of their last tours found them opening for the Foo Fighters. A San Francisco stop on this tour is featured on their post-breakup release; Live 4/30/96. The LP version of the live album was a mail-order only offer limited to one hundred copies from Allied Records.

Post-break up (1997-present)

Singer Blake Schwarzenbach went on to form the New York City-based band Jets to Brazil, which has since broken up. Between bands, he found work as a freelance writer, even writing a few game reviews for GameSpot. He is now an adjunct English professor at Hunter College in New York City. After a brief stint with The Thorns of Life, he is currently playing with forgetters.

Drummer Adam Pfahler lives in San Francisco and currently runs Lost Weekend Video and Blackball Records, which primarily keeps the Jawbreaker catalog in print. He has played drums in Bay Area pop punk band J Church and played in Whysall Lane with Richard Baluyut, the lead singer for Versus.

Bassist Chris Bauermeister briefly played with Horace Pinker while he was working on a doctorate degree in History at Purdue. He moved to Olympia, Washington, where he played bass in the band Shorebirds with singer/guitarist Matt Cannino from the band Latterman. As of 2009, Bauermeister is in a new band with Cannino: Mutoid Men.

Rumored reunion

On , 2008, Pfahler announced that during the course of filming a Jawbreaker documentary, the band played music together in private. These comments ignited rumors about a possible reunion. Pfahler had this to say:

"Yes, the documentary is still on, still being made. The hold up is that Keith and Tim have yet to find a distributor who is willing to pony up the closing costs to finish this thing (flights, editing time, blowing it up to 35mm. etc.). So they are doing this as a labor of love in between their regular gigs and family time. I trust this love bodes well for the finished product. A few months back they came to SF and we got some really great footage with all three of us and Billy Anderson (who worked on Bivouac, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy and a couple one-offs as a producer/engineer). We even played together, but didn't roll footage out of both respect for the sanctity of the moment and fear that we'd suck. Anyway, I have audio of it. Maybe I'll post that some day."

Musical style

Jawbreaker's music is characterized by raw vocals, a driving rhythm section, and grinding guitar?a mix used by many punk bands. Unlike most other punk bands, Jawbreaker delves into complex song structure, melody, instrumental interludes, and obscure sampled recordings. Jawbreaker's lyrics, written largely by Schwarzenbach, are imbued with a literary melancholy comparable to the work of early Charles Bukowski and late Anne Sexton. Jawbreaker's songs fuse personal longing with animistic fetishization of both public objects (boats and boxcars) and private (books and bottles). Many of Jawbreaker's songs reflect on post-college depression, social issues, and youthful aspiration.

Cult status

The band's cult status as the definitive nineties punk band has grown since its breakup. In 2003, a Jawbreaker tribute album, Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault, was released on Dying Wish Records, and featured covers by 18 bands including Fall Out Boy, Nerf Herder, Sparta, and Face to Face. Another tribute album, So Much for Letting Go, was released on Coptercrash Records. Chris Conley of Saves the Day has cited Jawbreaker as an influence on his writing. Jesse Lacey is known to cover Jawbreaker songs such as "Accident Prone" in some of his concerts. Set Your Goals covered "Do You Still Hate Me" on a Bay Area punk compilation. Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes, The City On Film) and Mike Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs, American Football, and Owen) can be seen on Youtube performing duets of 'Boxcar' and 'Chesterfield King'. Author Dave Roche frequently cites Jawbreaker as one of his favorite bands. Bird flu phylogeographer Robert Wallace quotes a Schwarzenbach lyric on his website. A character in the punk rock webcomic Nothing Nice To Say routinely refers to Jawbreaker as one of his favorite bands. This character's name is Blake, and he seems to be modeled after Schwarzenbach. Jawfaker, an East Coast band, formed in 2006 to perform Jawbreaker songs live. Author Tao Lin references Jawbreaker throughout his novel Eeeee Eee Eeee, including multiple references to the song "Ache". Lagwagon also covered Jawbreaker's "Want," which can be found on their b-sides album, "Let's Talk About Leftovers." The Lawrence Arms and The Sour Notes have also been known to cover Jawbreaker songs, and cite them as an influence which is clearly evident in their music and lyrics. Comparisons have also been drawn between early Jawbreaker and Face to Face, who as mentioned above covered Chesterfield King on the tribute album and their own covers album Standards and Practices Ampere makes a lyrical reference to "Kiss the Bottle" in their song "Abject Failure". In addition, Rise Against has been known to cover "Tour Song" from time to time in various acoustic sessions (such as on Sessions@AOL). Alternative county band, Lucero, also cover the Jawbreaker B-Side, "Kiss The Bottle" both live and on record. The recorded version can be found on the Re-Issue of The Attic Tapes.

Hit The Lights Biography

The Lima, Ohio-based emocore band Hit the Lights formed in the summer of 2003. Vocalist Colin Ross and guitarist Omar Zehery had previously teamed together in the little-known group Goodbye Session, while guitarist Nick Thompson tenured with the Summer Departure. Bassist David Bermosk and drummer Nate Van Dame (a former roadie for emo favorites Hawthorne Heights) completed the lineup, and after taking their name from a track on Metallica's influential debut LP, Kill 'Em All, Hit the Lights earned a fervent cult following on the basis of their feverish live shows. Studio time followed, and the group recorded its debut EP, 2004's From Ohio with Love, alongside A Day in the Life and Red Affair. After self-releasing the Until We Get Caught EP in 2005, Hit the Lights signed to the Triple Crown label, which reissued the disc in advance of the band's first full-length effort, 2006's This Is a Stick Up...Don't Make It a Murder. In 2007, Ross parted ways with the band, and Nick Thompson took over as the vocalist for 2008's Skip School, Start Fights.
