Whether you realize it or not, Law of Attraction is always working. The words you use and the thoughts you are thinking effect the level of success and abundance you will have in your business. It is important to release the negative emotions and keep the energy in a positive state.

A few years ago I took a course on Law of Attraction from Michael Losier. I had took a couple other courses but it wasn’t until I took Michael Losier’s course that I really understood how to make it work. One thing I learned from Michael was that you first need to figure out what you DON’T WANT. Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the center of the page from top to bottom. Then, on the left side of the page, make a list of everything you don’t want in your business. When you are finished with that list, go back and look at it. Next, on the right side of the page, take each negative thing on the list and change it to what you DO WANT.

These new positive things are what you want to focus on. There are times when that can be a challenge but it is important that you focus on abundant thinking. Turn these positive things into affirmations. . You can use Emotional Freedom Technique to shift your energy to a more abundant vibration.

These days, with the economy the way it is, there are more and more people in scarcity mode. Take a moment to listen when you are among groups of people. You will hear people talking about gas prices, inflation, job security, and the list goes on.

One thing that disturbs me is that I am hearing some network marketers talk from scarcity thinking. This is detrimental to your business. I have heard some say people are broke and can’t afford products.

This is NOT the time to be caught up in scarcity mindset. Don’t you realize people need what we have with network marketing? People are looking for answers. Many are looking to supplement their income. Thinking that people can’t afford to buy is pretty much insuring that you will never have any success in your business.

The network marketing industry thrives in economic down times. Smart network marketers will position themselves in front of those who are online searching for ways to supplement their income. Those who are applying Attraction Marketing will be ahead of the game.

Attraction Marketing is something I have been applying in my business and teaching my downline since I started with my primary company 14 years ago. I called it Remote Marketing. Nowadays we call it Attraction Marketing.

I had used conventional network marketing in a prior company and hated it. I knew there had to be a better way. I started thinking about how conventional businesses operate. Build Belief In Yourself and the Network Marketing Industry

To be a successful, full time network marketer it is crucial that you build belief. You want the freedom that lifestyle can bring. That amount of success will never come if you don’t believe. You need belief not only in yourselfand your ability to get there but you also must believe in the network marketing industry.

Here are a few ways to build belief:

1. Using the Products – You must believe in the products or services you are offering otherwise, you’ll never be able to have belief in the industry or your ability to build a business.

Let me tell you, a great product experience can work wonders in building belief in your ability to sell it. My product experience is the reason I am in the network marketing industry today. Use the products. You’ll have great stories to tell and STORIES SELL!

2. Attend Events – You should be attending as many events as you possibly can. Whenever you can get together with other distributors you can learn from each other. Not only learning but energizing each other.

3. Listen to audios and videos – There are loads of audios and videos put out by your company, your upline and other network marketing trainers. Serious network marketers are listening to these trainings as much as possible. The more you listen, the more you will be able to speak up about things that will help other people.

4. Attend Conference Calls – Listening to and even participating in conference calls is another awesome way to build belief in yourself and the network marketing industry. Conference calls are a great way to learn more and polish up your skills.

There are a lot of conference calls you can access, especially if you are using any of the training on the internet. It is impossible to be on all of them. Usually these conference calls are recorded so you can listen anytime.

5. Read Books – I know, you already know reading books is important but I am always amazed how few books people actually read. That is one reason why I put my reading listonline a while back. It’s not even the full list. I just went through books I have in my office and ones I could remember.

6. Subscribe to Newsletters & Blogs – There are loads of blogs and newsletters that you can benefit from. It is particularly important to subscribe to all upline newsletters you can find.

Also subscribe to newsletters and blogs on marketing, personal development and things related to your company. I also recommend subscribing to industry journals likeNetwork Marketing Times Magazine.

7. Talk to someone who has done it – Find someone in your upline who has achieved what you are wanting to achieve. Talk to them. Learn what they did to be successful. Not only what they did but notice their mindset.

8. Affirmations – I have been a firm believer in affirmations for a long time. The words you use have power. You raise or lower your energy and belief by the words you use. You can even program yourself and your habits. You can change things you don’t like.

Affirmations can be effective in helping reprogram success habits. Add EFT to your affirmations and watch the changes you can make. I never do affirmations without adding some EFT. It’s powerful. Give it a try.

9. Visualization – See yourself and feel what it feels like to achieve success in network marketing. Spend a little time each day visualizing and getting comfortable with various aspects of your business.

These are just a few things you can do to build belief. I’m sure there are others I haven’t mentioned.

Don’t Just Sit In A Field And Wait

How Cows Make Me Smile And Motivate Me For Success

“Those who want milk don’t just sit in a field and wait for a cow to back up to them.” – Author Unknown

That is my all time favorite quote. I first heard it over 12 years ago on a conference call. It cracked me up back then and it still makes me smile. The illustration is so ridiculous yet so appropriate.

If you want milk you have to do something to get it. Action is required. These days you can go to the store so its pretty easy.

Sadly many people approach their business as though they were sitting in a field waiting for something to happen. I guess they are hoping osmosis will kick in and things will just happen.

They start their network marketing business with a glimmer in their eye. “One day I’ll retire from the drudgery of a job,” or “I will earn a thousand or so to supplement my income”, or “I’ll earn enough to cover a car payment.”

Remember that feeling? You learned about how network marketing worked and bought into the dream. The problem is, far too many sign up as distributors but they don’t take any action. They just wait for something to happen.

Network marketing is a business that you can fulfill your dreams. You can open up unimaginable freedom and lifestyle changes but . . .

. . . one thing is required. Well, actually a few things are required but they all require ACTION!!

Here are 3 ways to help keep yourself motivated for action:

1. Know Your WHY -This is really important. Recently I heard someone say your why should be big enough to make you cry. Mine sure did. Even still I can get choked up when I tell my story of how I got started. It needs to be emotional and inspiring. Although others will benefit from your cause, it has to be about you.

Example: My why was freedom: emotionally, financially and freedom from health problems – I was financially in trouble and I was suffering from suicidal depression. At that time I was exposed to medicinal grade essential oils. My sponsor, who knew I was in bad shape brought some oils over for me to try. Within minutes of trying an oil blend, I was lifted out of that depression to such a point that I was giggling and dancing around the house. My son came home, not knowing what had happened, asked if I was “On something.” That was life changing for me.

Having been in network marketing already but not feeling a good fit, I realized this was the company for me. This could, not only help my husband’s health issues, but also the financial mess we were in. We live in the poorest county in Ohio, my husband had lost his job of over 20 years. He had serious health issues and had been in the hospital. We were in a desperate situation. Being over 40, it was difficult for Mark to find a decent job so we both ended up doing all kinds of things but not making ends meet.

Freedom from all that mess was my HUGE WHY!

2. Focus Daily on your WHY – When you are doing that, make sure you think deeply for a few minutes and let yourself access the emotion under it. This is VERY important. You’ll find motivation if you focus on this why EVERY SINGLE DAY. Start your day with it so you set the tone for the day.

3. Take Daily Action – Read books, listen to audios and conference calls, work on personal development, use at least 3-5 ways to promote your business, etc. Learn what you need to do and do something daily.

Even if you take small steps in the beginning, keep stepping forward and making progress. Visualize, set goals, work on personal development, learn to be a good marketer and leader. Stick to it and have a DMO – Daily Method of Operation.

If you stick to it and keep taking action, you won’t regret it.

Search engine reputation management (SERM) is reaching the next level. PR firms across the globe are starting to offer elaborate services in corporation with SEO firms. A professional approach doesn't just consist of cleansing the search results once a reputation is already in trouble. Companies need to become aware that all their activities can result in well-ranked online messages that can have a huge effect on the perception of their brand.

SERP Cleansing

Already quite well known is the service of pushing undesired search results for your name out of the prominent first search engine result page (SERP). This can be done by textually optimizing pages on different domains for your brand name and by directing various links to those pages. Only once 10 results are better optimized than the negative result, will the negative result be removed from the first top-10 page. It will, however, still be visible on the next page, and in cases where the negative message is situated on a domain like CNN.com, it's very hard to beat it (10 times).

If you can find a less negative page on the same domain as the result you want to lose, you might be able to switch the page shown in the search results for your name. This way you don't need multiple results to outrank the negative one, but only one. That one result doesn't have to compete against a domain like CNN.com because it is on that same domain. The page that you choose needs some keyword relevance for your brand name. Enter a query like "site:cnn.com apple" to find possible contenders. If possible, try to add your company name in the comments of a desired page, but it is likely most of the work should be done by links. Intensely linking to the desired page from multiple domains allows it to outrank the undesired one. Because Google likes to show just a few pages for each domain in the top-10 it is likely to take its place. Only in rare cases do you need to push two or more pages from the same domain to have a clean top-10.

If the negative result is clear slander, search engines are known to remove certain results for you. Sites like chillingeffects.org can often help you to take the right legal steps to get this done. You can also try to arrange a settlement with the complainer or the website the message is on. This is often cheaper than SERM, but the negative result needs to be removed for this to be effective. Rectifications or positive remarks on how things ended well at the bottom of the negative page are seldom read.

Reputation Monitoring

It is always smart to set alerts for your brand names, product names, and key employees. Google Alerts can signal you when your name is mentioned on regular web pages. Social media is often much quicker to indicate problems and Google doesn't offer a service for that yet. Free services like Social Mention can be used to monitor various social media channels so you can resolve a problem before it ends up on regular web pages that could rank in your branded SERPs.

Professional reputation monitoring needs to be done across many channels and many keywords. Big brands have thousands of keywords that are mentioned thousands of times each day. It requires careful keyword selection and expensive professional tools to detect the negative remarks that need attention in time. A contingency plan and quick reaction force are also needed to quickly dismantle potential negative outbreaks.

SERP Claiming

Even if your reputation is still clean within search results, it might be a smart thing to make it harder for that one dissatisfied customer to get a lot of attention. If the top results for your name would all be well optimized, it's harder for newcomers to enter the top-10.

There's several steps you can take to create a strong result page for your name.

Create business profiles on various strong domains.
Create social media profiles.
Contribute to sites and events to get an "about the author" page.
Get others to write about you.
Have multiple websites yourself.
Also optimize for Google results like AdWords, images, video, and local search so you control a larger portion of the SERP.

If these pages are well optimized for your name, if they are on authority domains, and if they are well linked from other sites, it is harder to beat them. Hypes have a chance of temporarily outranking your controlled search results, but they will drop within a short timeframe.

Branding

The main difference between marketing and PR is that PR doesn't seem to include a big commercial aspect. Where SEO has been mainly focused on marketing in the past, it is also very effective for PR purposes. SEO for marketing mainly focuses on ranking your own website; SEO for PR should also be focused on boosting messages on other sites.

Ranking for technical terminology that your customers will never use won't bring a lot of sales. If you do, however, rank with insightful information on new developments, people in your industry will notice. This attracts job applicants, business partners, and media coverage that confirms your authority to potential customers.

Positive attention for your brand should rank - for whatever keyword they're relevant for. If you win awards, speak at conferences, sponsor a charity, or when business is kind to you, it should rank and get additional attention from Google visitors.

Image search also doesn't bring a lot of direct sales, but it is very effective for branding purposes.

If you use certain claims in your sales pitches, make sure the sources that confirm your claim rank well. You can also make sure contradictory sources don't rank well.

As you can see, SEO has become more than a traffic source. SEO PR might even be more important to large corporations than SEO marketing.

Various activities require you to have a lot of control over media coverage. The media also intensely uses search engines to find background information, sources, and experts. Stock quotes and IPOs are great examples of how media coverage and Google results have a great impact on your financial situation. If you're able to make the right information rank better across a broad spectrum of keywords, you can influence how positive or negative certain events are seen.

Lobbying

Marketing an idea is even more powerful than marketing a product. Public opinion can be heavilyinfluenced through SEO activities. People still don't realize that Google results are based on simple calculations and that they don't represent an unbiased version of the truth.

Working for various lobby groups during the last U.S. presidential elections has really opened my eyes. On multiple occasions we got to determine which experts were interviewed and which sources were cited by prominent media. Not that these sources weren't reputable, but we chose which reputable source got most of the attention. Statements by our lobby group needed to be confirmed by multiple experts and opposite statements needed to be surrounded by doubt and contradiction.

We even discovered that a couple of senators had been misguided by a message we planted only through Google. No other source could explain the exact numbers they cited. Everybody seems to use Google.

Negative PR

Hopefully this last option doesn't get to be used often in the future. Besides making sure negative messages don't hurt your brand for times to come, you can also make sure negative messages for your competitor keep ranking well. You're not creating the messages, you just make a selected few of them rank better for your competitor's brand name.

While working on an SEO PR case, I came across old negative messages that were manipulated in this way. I was, however, able to reconstruct which competitor was behind this unethical practice, and after some apologies they removed the links they had bought.

We should probably agree to keep SEO PR ethical. You don't want to be hit by something like this either, so don't practice it yourself.

SEO = PR

Search engine reputation management isn't the only form of PR work you're able to do with SEO. All PR activities have an SEO ingredient in them. It's about time all PR firms start to notice this.

That statement says a lot. Every day we let go by without doing something that moves us forward toward our goals we are actually back sliding.

In your business, much like when you are in a boat, you are moving in a direction toward your destination. If you stop moving forward you will find yourself drifting, but if you are drifting, you are moving along with a current. The current is not moving towards your goals.

Consistently working at making progress and always moving forward is imperative if we want to reach our goals. There will be down times where we aren’t moving as effectively or as fast as we do in our peak times but we must still be focused on doing something each day that makes forward progress. If we don’t do that, we will never reach our goals. We will always be trying to catch up.

Successful marketers are in marketing mode every day, everywhere. We don’t build our business in spurts, working for a little while, then neglecting our business for days or weeks.

Decide what you are going to do – Set Goals
Work consistently toward those goals every day.
Those goals should become good habits.

If you’re struggling to get past 100 visitors a day and want to break the 500-1000 consistent visitors a day milestone, just execute the 3 strategies I’ve listed below. This can be used even if you’re at 1000+ visitors and will only add more traffic.

How To Massively Boost Your MLM Blog Traffic

1. Write Great Content

Once a week write a killer post which is long and structured and stuffed with a huge amount of value. This requires you to do about an hour of research and brainstorming on the most popular trends in your niche that offers a solution.

Killer content is not an opinion but rather a solution to peoples problems. Some examples could be “7 Areas That Guarantee Network marketing Success” or “21 Things You Should Be Doing For Self Mastery Instead Of Self Destruction” Expect longer than normal to write these articles.

A lot of network marketers and bloggers tend to overlook the importance of writing great content. If you write engaging, informing, and solution providing articles, your posts will be shared, liked and emailed by your readers. Before you know it your articles have taken a life of their own and you’ll have more traffic to your MLM blog than you ever though was possible.

The number one reason that this may not be true for you is because you’re probably giving your opinion on any given topic and people really don’t care about opinions. They are seeking solutions on how to better run their business.

Here are some example topics you can write about:

how to get leads online
how to increase traffic to their sites
how to run a proper sales funnel
how to make their prospects open their emails
how to handle objections
how to get their CPC rates down on their PPC campaigns
how to write magnetic headlines
how to get prospects to optin to their email list
how to maximize on direct response marketing
how to come up with blog content
how to motivate their downlone
how to recruit the big time MLM players
how to work on their mindset
how to simplify information overload
how to deal woth rejection
how to write high converting solo ad copy

and the list goes on

What’s the one thing you notice about those topics? They’re all “how to” topics because online network marketers want to know “how to” make sure their business remains a long term asset and not a short term fluke.

They don’t care why you chose your opportunity, why your comp plan is the greatest in MLM history, and why your product is a “no brainer” and that everybody should have one.

Your prospect doesn’t want to know “why”, they want to know “how” to make the money they expected when they first became a network marketing distributor.

Once you have written your killer content you can focus on writing “normal” posts that shouldn’t take you more than 45min – 1hr and link these to your killer content article. For example, you can write your killer post on Monday and link all of your normal posts that you wrote on Tues-Fri back to it.

Example of “normal” posts:

Asking your visitors a question and aiming for a discussion
A news article in your niche that will help them avoid or implement into their business
Simple but effective solutions pertaining to their business building efforts
A list of resources or new tips and tricks you’ve discovered that’s helped you with your business

These normal posts create diversity and keeps your visitors engaged and more likely to share your content and come back to your site which will certainly boost your MLM blog traffic.

2. Network Your Blog

This strategy is more useful when your blog is new, but still effective for any person trying to enhance their exposure. This is done by visiting and commenting on other blogs in your niche, linking posts to these sites, interacting with the owners of these blogs by email, instant messaging, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

The main goal of networking is to build genuine and sincere relationships with these blog owners. If you really want to boost your MLM blog traffic, then listen to me clearly, never ever approach others just for your benefit but rather because you respect them, their work and because you want to grow and build together.

You guys can put together a linking strategy, mastermind on traffic strategies, build a large blog network of with other blog owners for a massive link wheel, etc. The possibilities are endless but important to make sure your networking your blog.

However, don’t confuse this with promoting you blog because you are making efforts to work with other bloggers to intersect each others work for massive exposure.

3. Promote Your Awesome Blog

Since you’re providing killer content jam packed with value, it’s now time to let the world know. They’re several ways to do this but don’t spam and become unattractive by bombarding everybody you know 1000 times a day to “check out” your stuff ….and…. don’t beg either.

Post your article in Facebook and LinkedIn Groups that allow you to do so

Have an option for them to optin to your email list so you can bring them back to your new articles daily
Contribute to forums… older and somewhat outdated strategy but will still bring visitors to your site

2) You’ll be redirected to a new page where you’ll be asked to choose a Log-in name (this can be your real name or a nickname/handle), a display name (this should be your real name) and your email address. You’ll also be asked to choose and then confirm a password. Once you’ve filled out all of these fields, click on the button marked “Create Account.”

3) Choose your payment plan. It costs money to join iFreelance.com (it will be money well-spent if you’re good at what you do and you bid fairly). iFreelance has three membership levels, ranging in price from $6.25 to $12 monthly. Each level/plan has successively more benefits and advantages. However, we would suggest that you start out with the least expensive plan. You can always upgrade later on. Click on your chosen plan.

4) On the next page, choose how you want to pay for your membership. You can be billed monthly, annually, or every two years. You can save even more money if you choose an annual or bi-annual plan. After clicking in the corresponding field, you’ll be asked to choose under what category you want your profile to be listed.

5) Depending on which membership level you’ve selected, you’ll get to choose options to be listed within your profile. You’ll be asked to choose a certain number of “sub-categories” which you’ll work under. You can choose as many as are applicable and as you are allowed.

6) Once you’ve chosen all your options, fill out your bio information. Then choose your payment method. (iFreelance accepts PayPal and most major credit cards.) Don’t forget to agree to iFreelance’s “Terms of Service.” Finally, click on “Create Account.”

2) In the next page, you will have to submit necessary information such as Name, Country, E-mail address and have to choose your Username and password. 3) Your account will be created. You now have to verify your account through your E-mail. After verification, you will be prompted to complete your profile. For years Alexa has provided traffic rankings for Web sites from aarp.org to zappos.com. Then, about five years ago we created some special rules so that we could provide rankings for homepages on sites like geocities and tripod. These rules allowed people to write reviews of their favorite personal homepages, compare traffic rankings, create related links and more.

But we never created similar rules for the blog hosting sites. Sure, you could get a traffic ranking for a blog if it happened to be hosted with its own domain name -- sites likewonkette.com or kottke.org. But, if you were Attu (attu.blogspot.com) you were out of luck. The best you could get was the ranking for your host, blogspot.com, but not for your own blog.

But now that is changing: Alexa is ranking individual blogs.

Go to you favorite blog, click the "Site Info" button on your Alexa toolbar and check it out. You can see rankings, related links and more for your blogs.

There are still a few wrinkles to iron out. For example, you can't review blogs yet. We are also adding to our list of known blog hosts... if we aren't ranking your individual blog, let us know about it and we will do our best to track it too.

Another change is that we are actually counting blog and homepage traffic twice... once for the individual blog or homepage, and again for the host. If you take a look at Geocities traffic history graph you are going to see a HUGE jump in traffic starting today. This is because all the traffic that was previously only counted toward the homepages is now also counted toward the host.

All the usual disclaimers about the traffic rankings apply particularly to blogs and personal homepages which will overwhelmingly fall outside of Alexa's Top 100,000. Caveats abound here. In short, if you fall outside the Top 100,000, you may want to take your rankings with a grain of salt.

For example, great infographics that strike a chord (like this one), beautiful videos that tell a story (like this one) and remarkable collections of facts that challenge common assumptions (like this one) are all targeted at audiences likely to share (geeks with facial hair, those interested in weight loss and those with political thoughts about macroeconomics respectively).

If you can identify groups that have high concentrations of the blue and orange circles in the diagram above, you dramatically improve the chances of reaching larger audiences and growing your traffic numbers. Targeting blog content at less-share-likely groups may not be a terrible decision (particularly if that's where you passion or your target audience lies), but it will decrease the propensity for your blog's work to spread like wildfire across the web.

At the very least, I'd recommend most bloggers install Google Analytics (which is free), and watch to see where visits originate, which sources drive quality traffic and what others might be saying about you and your content when they link over. As you can see, there's all sorts of great insights to be gleaned by looking at where visits originate, analyzing how they were earned and trying to repeat the successes, focus on the high quality and high traffic sources and put less effort into marketing paths that may not be effective. In this example, it's pretty clear that Facebook and Twitter are both excellent channels. StumbleUpon sends a lot of traffic, but they don't stay very long (averaging only 36 seconds vs. the general average of 4 minutes!).

Employing analytics is critical to knowing where you're succeeding, and where you have more opportunity. Don't ignore it, or you'll be doomed to never learn from mistakes or execute on potential.

#6 - ADD GRAPHICS, PHOTOS AND ILLUSTRATIONS (WITH LINK-BACK LICENSING)

If you're someone who can produce graphics, take photos, illustrate or even just create funny doodles in MS Paint, you should leverage that talent on your blog. By uploading and hosting images (or using a third-party service like Flickr to embed your images with licensing requirements on that site), you create another traffic source for yourself via Image Search, and often massively improve the engagement and enjoyment of your visitors.

When using images, I highly recommend creating a way for others to use them on their own sites legally and with permission, but in such a way that benefits you as the content creator. For example, you could have a consistent notice under your images indicating that re-using is fine, but that those who do should link back to this post. You can also post that as a sidebar link, include it in your terms of use, or note it however you think will get the most adoption.

Some people will use your images without linking back, which sucks. However, you can find them by employing the Image Search function of "similar images," shown below:

Clicking the "similar" link on any given image will show you other images that Google thinks look alike, which can often uncover new sources of traffic. Just reach out and ask if you can get a link, nicely. Much of the time, you'll not only get your link, but make a valuable contact or new friend, too!

#7 - CONDUCT KEYWORD RESEARCH WHILE WRITING YOUR POSTS

Not surprisingly, a big part of showing up in search engines is targeting the terms and phrases your audience are actually typing into a search engine. It's hard to know what these words will be unless you do some research, and luckily, there's a free tool from Google to help called the AdWords Keyword Tool.

Type some words at the top, hit search and AdWords will show you phrases that match the intent and/or terms you've employed. There's lots to play around with here, but watch out in particular for the "match types" options I've highlighted below:

When you choose "exact match" AdWords will show you only the quantity of searches estimated for that precise phrase. If you use broad match, they'll include any search phrases that use related/similar words in a pattern they think could have overlap with your keyword intent (which can get pretty darn broad). "Phrase match" will give you only those phrases that include the word or words in your search - still fairly wide-ranging, but between "exact" and "broad."

When you're writing a blog post, keyword research is best utilized for the title and headline of the post. For example, if I wanted to write a post here on Moz about how to generate good ideas for bloggers, I might craft something that uses the phrase "blog post ideas" or "blogging ideas" near the front of my title and headline, as in "Blog Post Ideas for When You're Truly Stuck," or "Blogging Ideas that Will Help You Clear Writer's Block."

Optimizing a post to target a specific keyword isn't nearly as hard as it sounds. 80% of the value comes from merely using the phrase effectively in the title of the blog post, and writing high quality content about the subject. If you're interested in more, read Perfecting Keyword Targeting and On-Page Optimization (a slightly older resource, but just as relevant today as when it was written).

#8 - FREQUENTLY REFERENCE YOUR OWN POSTS AND THOSE OF OTHERS

The web was not made for static, text-only content! Readers appreciate links, as do other bloggers, site owners and even search engines. When you reference your own material in-context and in a way that's not manipulative (watch out for over-optimizing by linking to a category, post or page every time a phrase is used - this is almost certainly discounted by search engines and looks terrible to those who want to read your posts), you potentially draw visitors to your other content AND give search engines a nice signal about those previous posts.

Perhaps even more valuable is referencing the content of others. The biblical expression "give and ye shall receive," perfectly applies on the web. Other site owners will often receive Google Alerts or look through their incoming referrers (as I showed above in tip #5) to see who's talking about them and what they're saying. Linking out is a direct line to earning links, social mentions, friendly emails and new relationships with those you reference. In its early days, this tactic was one of the best ways we earned recognition and traffic with the SEOmoz blog and the power continues to this day.

#9 - PARTICIPATE IN SOCIAL SHARING COMMUNITIES LIKE REDDIT + STUMBLEUPON

The major social networking sites aren't alone in their power to send traffic to a blog. Social community sites like Reddit (which now receives more than 2 billion! with a "B"! views each month), StumbleUpon,Pinterest, Tumblr, Care2 (for nonprofits and causes), GoodReads (books), Ravelry (knitting), Newsvine (news/politics) and many, many more (Wikipedia maintains a decent, though not comprehensive list here).

Each of these sites have different rules, formats and ways of participating and sharing content. As with participation in blog or forum communities described above in tactic #2, you need to add value to these communities to see value back. Simply drive-by spamming or leaving your link won't get you very far, and could even cause a backlash. Instead, learn the ropes, engage authentically and you'll find that fans, links and traffic can develop.

These communities are also excellent sources of inspiration for posts on your blog. By observing what performs well and earns recognition, you can tailor your content to meet those guidelines and reap the rewards in visits and awareness. My top recommendation for most bloggers is to at least check whether there's an appropriate subreddit in which you should be participating. Subreddits and their search functioncan help with that.

#10 - GUEST BLOG (AND ACCEPT THE GUEST POSTS OF OTHERS)

When you're first starting out, it can be tough to convince other bloggers to allow you to post on their sites OR have an audience large enough to inspire others to want to contribute to your site. This is when friends and professional connections are critical. When you don't have a compelling marketing message, leverage your relationships - find the folks who know you, like you and trust you and ask those who have blog to let you take a shot at authoring something, then ask them to return the favor.

Guest blogging is a fantastic way to spread your brand to new folks who've never seen your work before, and it can be useful in earning early links and references back to your site, which will drive direct traffic and help your search rankings (diverse, external links are a key part of how search engines rank sites and pages). Several recommendations for those who engage in guest blogging:

Find sites that have a relevant audience - it sucks to pour your time into writing a post, only to see it fizzle because the readers weren't interested. Spend a bit more time researching the posts that succeed on your target site, the makeup of the audience, what types of comments they leave and you'll earn a much higher return with each post.
Don't be discouraged if you ask and get a "no" or a "no response." As your profile grows in your niche, you'll have more opportunities, requests and an easier time getting a "yes," so don't take early rejections too hard and watch out - in many marketing practices, persistence pays, but pestering a blogger to write for them is not one of these (and may get your email address permanently banned from their inbox).
When pitching your guest post make it as easy as possible for the other party. When requesting to post, have a phenomenal piece of writing all set to publish that's never been shared before and give them the ability to read it. These requests get far more "yes" replies than asking for the chance to write with no evidence of what you'll contribute. At the very least, make an outline and write a title + snippet.
Likewise, when requesting a contribution, especially from someone with a significant industry profile, asking for a very specific piece of writing is much easier than getting them to write an entire piece from scratch of their own design. You should also present statistics that highlight the value of posting on your site - traffic data, social followers, RSS subscribers, etc. can all be very persuasive to a skeptical writer.

A great tool for frequent guest bloggers is Ann Smarty's MyBlogGuest, which offers the ability to connect writers with those seeking guest contributions (and the reverse).

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ are also great places to find guest blogging opportunities. In particular, check out the profiles of those you're connected with to see if they run blogs of their own that might be a good fit. Google's Blog Search function and Google Reader's Search are also solid tools for discovery.

#11 - INCORPORATE GREAT DESIGN INTO YOUR SITE

The power of beautiful, usable, professional design can't be overstated. When readers look at a blog, the first thing they judge is how it "feels" from a design and UX perspective. Sites that use default templates or have horrifying, 1990's design will receive less trust, a lower time-on-page, fewer pages per visit and a lower likelihood of being shared. Those that feature stunning design that clearly indicates quality work will experience the reverse - and reap amazing benefits.

If you're looking for a designer to help upgrade the quality of your blog, there's a few resources I recommend:

Dribbble - great for finding high quality professional designers
Forrst - another excellent design profile community
Behance - featuring galleries from a wide range of visual professionals
Sortfolio - an awesome tool to ID designers by region, skill and budget
99 Designs - a controversial site that provides designs on spec via contests (I have mixed feelings on this one, but many people find it useful, particularly for budget-conscious projects)

This is one area where budgeting a couple thousand dollars (if you can afford it) or even a few hundred (if you're low on cash) can make a big difference in the traffic, sharing and viral-impact of every post you write.

#12 - INTERACT ON OTHER BLOGS' COMMENTS

As bloggers, we see a lot of comments. Many are spam, only a few add real value, and even fewer are truly fascinating and remarkable. If you can be in this final category consistently, in ways that make a blogger sit up and think "man, I wish that person commented here more often!" you can achieve great things for your own site's visibility through participation in the comments of other blogs.

Combine the tools presented in #10 (particularly Google Reader/Blog Search) and #4 (especiallyFollowerWonk) for discovery. The feed subscriber counts in Google Reader can be particularly helpful for identifying good blogs for participation. Then apply the principles covered in this post on comment marketing.

Do be conscious of the name you use when commenting and the URL(s) you point back to. Consistency matters, particularly on naming, and linking to internal pages or using a name that's clearly made for keyword-spamming rather than true conversation will kill your efforts before they begin.

#13 - PARTICIPATE IN Q+A SITES

Every day, thousands of people ask questions on the web. Popular services like Yahoo! Answers,Answers.com, Quora, StackExchange, Formspring and more serve those hungry for information whose web searches couldn't track down the responses they needed.

The best strategy I've seen for engaging on Q+A sites isn't to answer every question that comes along, but rather, to strategically provide high value to a Q+A community by engaging in those places where:

The question quality is high, and responses thus far have been thin
The question receives high visibility (either by ranking well for search queries, being featured on the site or getting social traffic/referrals). Most of the Q+A sites will show some stats around the traffic of a question
The question is something you can answer in a way that provides remarkable value to anyone who's curious and drops by

I also find great value in answering a few questions in-depth by producing an actual blog post to tackle them, then linking back. This is also a way I personally find blog post topics - if people are interested in the answer on a Q+A site, chances are good that lots of folks would want to read it on my blog, too!

Just be authentic in your answer, particularly if you're linking. If you'd like to see some examples, I answer a lot of questions at Quora, frequently include relevant links, but am rarely accused of spamming or link dropping because it's clearly about providing relevant value, not just getting a link for SEO (links on most user-contributed sites are "nofollow" anyway, meaning they shouldn't pass search-engine value). There's a dangerous line to walk here, but if you do so with tact and candor, you can earn a great audience from your participation.

#14 - ENABLE SUBSCRIPTIONS VIA FEED + EMAIL (AND TRACK THEM!)

If someone drops by your site, has a good experience and thinks "I should come back here and check this out again when they have more posts," chances are pretty high (I'd estimate 90%+) that you'll never see them again. That sucks! It shouldn't be the case, but we have busy lives and the Internet's filled with animated gifs of cats.

In order to pull back some of these would-be fans, I highly recommend creating an RSS feed using Feedburner and putting visible buttons on the sidebar, top or bottom of your blog posts encouraging those who enjoy your content to sign up (either via feed, or via email, both of which are popular options).

If you're using Wordpress, there's some easy plugins for this, too.

Once you've set things up, visit every few weeks and check on your subscribers - are they clicking on posts? If so, which ones? Learning what plays well for those who subscribe to your content can help make you a better blogger, and earn more visits from RSS, too.

#15 - ATTEND AND HOST EVENTS

Despite the immense power of the web to connect us all regardless of geography, in-person meetings are still remarkably useful for bloggers seeking to grow their traffic and influence. The people you meet and connect with in real-world settings are far more likely to naturally lead to discussions about your blog and ways you can help each other. This yields guest posts, links, tweets, shares, blogroll inclusion and general business development like nothing else.

I'm a big advocate of Lanyrd, an event directory service that connects with your social networks to see who among your contacts will be at which events in which geographies. This can be phenomenally useful for identifying which meetups, conferences or gatherings are worth attending (and who you can carpool with).

The founder of Lanyrd also contributed this great answer on Quora about other search engines/directories for events (which makes me like them even more).

#16 - USE YOUR EMAIL CONNECTIONS (AND SIGNATURE) TO PROMOTE YOUR BLOG

As a blogger, you're likely to be sending a lot of email out to others who use the web and have the power to help spread your work. Make sure you're not ignoring email as a channel, one-to-one though it may be. When given an opportunity in a conversation that's relevant, feel free to bring up your blog, a specific post or a topic you've written about. I find myself using blogging as a way to scalably answer questions - if I receive the same question many times, I'll try to make a blog post that answers it so I can simply link to that in the future.

I also like to use my email signature to promote the content I share online. If I was really sharp, I'd do link tracking using a service like Bit.ly so I could see how many clicks email footers really earn. I suspect it's not high, but it's also not 0.

#17 - SURVEY YOUR READERS

Web surveys are easy to run and often produce high engagement and great topics for conversation. If there's a subject or discussion that's particularly contested, or where you suspect showing the distribution of beliefs, usage or opinions can be revealing, check out a tool like SurveyMonkey (they have a small free version) or PollDaddy. Google Docs also offers a survey tool that's totally free, but not yet great in my view.

#18 - ADD VALUE TO A POPULAR CONVERSATION

Numerous niches in the blogosphere have a few "big sites" where key issues arise, get discussed and spawn conversations on other blogs and sites. Getting into the fray can be a great way to present your point-of-view, earn attention from those interested in the discussion and potentially get links and traffic from the industry leaders as part of the process.

You can see me trying this out with Fred Wilson's AVC blog last year (an incredibly popular and well-respected blog in the VC world). Fred wrote a post about Marketing that I disagreed with strongly and publicly and a day later, he wrote a follow-up where he included a graphic I made AND a link to my post.

If you're seeking sources to find these "popular conversations," Alltop, Topsy, Techmeme (in the tech world) and their sister sites MediaGazer, Memeorandum and WeSmirch, as well as PopURLs can all be useful.

#19 - AGGREGATE THE BEST OF YOUR NICHE

Bloggers, publishers and site owners of every variety in the web world love and hate to be compared and ranked against one another. It incites endless intrigue, discussion, methodology arguments and competitive behavior - but, it's amazing for earning attention. When a blogger publishes a list of "the best X" or "the top X" in their field, most everyone who's ranked highly praises the list, shares it and links to it. Here's an example from the world of marketing itself:

That's a screenshot of the AdAge Power 150, a list that's been maintained for years in the marketing world and receives an endless amount of discussion by those listed (and not listed). For example, why is SEOmoz's Twitter score only a "13" when we have so many more followers, interactions and retweets than many of those with higher scores? Who knows. But I know it's good for AdAge. :-)

Now, obviously, I would encourage anyone building something like this to be as transparent, accurate and authentic as possible. A high quality resource that lists a "best and brightest" in your niche - be they blogs, Twitter accounts, Facebook pages, individual posts, people, conferences or whatever else you can think to rank - is an excellent piece of content for earning traffic and becoming a known quantity in your field.

Oh, and once you do produce it - make sure to let those featured know they've been listed. Tweeting at them with a link is a good way to do this, but if you have email addresses, by all means, reach out. It can often be the start of a great relationship!

#20 - CONNECT YOUR WEB PROFILES AND CONTENT TO YOUR BLOG

Many of you likely have profiles on services like YouTube, Slideshare, Yahoo!, DeviantArt and dozens of other social and Web 1.0 sites. You might be uploading content to Flickr, to Facebook, to Picasa or even something more esoteric like Prezi. Whatever you're producing on the web and wherever you're doing it, tie it back to your blog.

Including your blog's link on your actual profile pages is among the most obvious, but it's also incredibly valuable. On any service where interaction takes place, those interested in who you are and what you have to share will follow those links, and if they lead back to your blog, they become opportunities for capturing a loyal visitor or earning a share (or both!). But don't just do this with profiles - do it with content, too! If you've created a video for YouTube, make your blog's URL appear at the start or end of the video. Include it in the description of the video and on the uploading profile's page. If you're sharing photos on any of the dozens of photo services, use a watermark or even just some text with your domain name so interested users can find you.

If you're having trouble finding and updating all those old profiles (or figuring out where you might want to create/share some new ones), KnowEm is a great tool for discovering your own profiles (by searching for your name or pseudonyms you've used) and claiming profiles on sites you may not yet have participated in.

I'd also strongly recommend leveraging Google's relatively new protocol for rel=author. AJ Kohn wrote a great post on how to set it up here, and Yoast has another good one on building it into Wordpress sites. The benefit for bloggers who do build large enough audiences to gain Google's trust is earning your profile photo next to all the content you author - a powerful markup advantage that likely drives extra clicks from the search results and creates great, memorable branding, too.

#21 - UNCOVER THE LINKS OF YOUR FELLOW BLOGGERS (AND NAB 'EM!)

If other blogs in your niche have earned references from sites around the web, there's a decent chance that they'll link to you as well. Conducting competitive link research can also show you what content from your competition has performed well and the strategies they may be using to market their work. To uncover these links, you'll need to use some tools.

OpenSiteExplorer is my favorite, but I'm biased (it's made by Moz). However, it is free to use - if you create a registered account here, you can get unlimited use of the tool showing up to 1,000 links per page or site in perpetuity.

There are other good tools for link research as well, including Blekko, Majestic, Ahrefs and, I've heard that in the near-future, SearchMetrics.

Finding a link is great, but it's through the exhaustive research of looking through dozens or hundreds that you can identify patterns and strategies. You're also likely to find a lot of guest blogging opportunities and other chances for outreach. If you maintain a great persona and brand in your niche, your ability to earn these will rise dramatically.

BONUS #22 - BE CONSISTENT AND DON'T GIVE UP

If there's one piece of advice I wish I could share with every blogger, it's this:

The above image comes from Everywhereist's analytics. Geraldine could have given up 18 months into her daily blogging. After all, she was putting in 3-5 hours each day writing content, taking photos, visiting sites, coming up with topics, trying to guest blog and grow her Twitter followers and never doing any SEO (don't ask, it's a running joke between us). And then, almost two years after her blog began, and more than 500 posts in, things finally got going. She got some nice guest blogging gigs, had some posts of hers go "hot" in the social sphere, earned mentions on some bigger sites, then got really big press from Time's Best Blogs of 2011.

I'd guess there's hundreds of new bloggers on the web each day who have all the opportunity Geraldine had, but after months (maybe only weeks) of slogging away, they give up.

When I started the SEOmoz blog in 2004, I had some advantages (mostly a good deal of marketing and SEO knowledge), but it was nearly 2 years before the blog could be called anything like a success. Earning traffic isn't rocket science, but it does take time, perseverance and consistency. Don't give up. Stick to your schedule. Remember that everyone has a few posts that suck, and it's only by writing and publishing those sucky posts that you get into the habit necessary to eventually transform your blog into something remarkable.
