Celebrating “Make A Difference Day” on Sat. Oct. 24, United Way of Southern Nevada’s Volunteer Center is hosting various hands-on projects throughout the Valley to encourage widespread community involvement. The activities are designed to improve local neighborhoods and provide immediate help to those in need.

“Make A Difference Day” is a national day of volunteerism and is known as America’s largest day of doing good. Last year 3 million people across the country made a difference in their communities by completing thousands of projects to ensure a brighter tomorrow. The projects organized by United Way’s Volunteer Center are affiliated with the national day.

“This year we are challenging locals to get involved and become the change they want to see in their community,” said Robin Kelley, director of the Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada. “Now is a great time to get involved, because we have several events throughout the community with volunteer work that can appeal to everyone, but that also makes a large community impact.”

The Volunteer Center is hosting approximately seven separate projects around the Valley on Sat. Oct. 24 including:

Color Me Red (9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Henderson): Volunteers will grab paint brushes and red paint to refresh old and worn out curbs

Make A Difference in N. Las Vegas (9 a.m. – 1 p.m., N. Las Vegas): Beautifying the community to its original state, volunteers will help remove graffiti and repaint curbs and fire hydrants

Shots for Tots (10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Southern Nevada Health District): Safeguarding children against harmful diseases, the Southern Nevada Health District is offering free childhood immunization and an interactive community fair

Soup and a Smile (6:15 - 7:30 a.m., Cashman Center): Serving hot soup, tea, bread and other warm items, volunteers will feed the homeless

In celebration of “Get Smart About Credit Day” on Oct. 15, United Way of Southern Nevada is partnering with the Nevada Bankers Association to teach financial responsibility and credit lessons to high school students Oct. 12-29. Aligned with United Way’s core principal of providing lasting change through financial stability, nearly 50 classes will be held at schools across the Valley reaching 1,000 students.

“Get Smart About Credit” is a program focused on supplying young adults with the necessary tools for successfully handling their financial responsibilities both now and in the future. The program provides the youth with a solid understanding of how to manage their personal finances and provides tips for increasing income and personal wealth later in life.

"To build for a better tomorrow, we need to educate southern Nevada’s youth on how to responsibly manage their finances," said Dan Goulet, president and CEO of United Way of Southern Nevada. “By promoting good learning and fiscal habits early on in life these young students are being prepared for a financially sound future.”

From Oct. 12-29, the program will connect qualified volunteer instructors with local educational faculties to bring valuable lessons in financial stability. The instructors will tour schools and prepare hands-on presentations for the students.

As part of the event’s activities, 20 functional table “centerpieces” consisting of science and exploration tools were donated to United Way partner preschools and early childhood development centers for science curriculum enrichment.

Featuring guest speaker Jane Greenspun Gale (Founding Board Member, Springs Preserve), the event was attended by more than 100 WLC members and business leaders, and illustrated the importance of maintaining an environmentally-friendly and socially productive lifestyle. As part of the event’s activities, 20 functional table “centerpieces” consisting of science and exploration tools were donated to United Way partner preschools and early childhood development centers for science curriculum enrichment. The gift is one step towards closing the educational gap for underprivileged students and aligns with United Way’s mission to initiate lasting change in education, with particular emphasis on early education.

“We are always looking to plan creative and beneficial events that serve both the needs of our members and the needs of our community,” stated Cathy Jones, co-chair of United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council. “This breakfast leads us down the path of promoting educational success for Southern Nevada’s youth, while providing an enriching and enlightening networking experience for our community’s top female professional and philanthropic leaders.”

As a benefit to its many members, the Women’s Leadership Council continually organizes meaningful social and educational activities that align with the mission of United Way. Most recently during its Spring Suit Drive, the group collected more than 2,000 women’s suits and professional clothing and donated them to local women’s shelters and Goodwill Career Connections to benefit women in need.

Now boasting a membership of 105, the group has more than tripled during the past year, with a combined contribution that has exceeded $400,000 since its inception in November 2007.

Nevada 2-1-1, a health and human services help line, is partnering with the Nevada State Health Division, Maternal & Child Health Programs office to integrate the current Maternal & Child Health 800 number into the Nevada 2-1-1 database of services. This additional resource will provide information and referral assistance to callers in need of prenatal care from conception to birth.

“We areexcited about the new partnership with the Nevada State Health Division, which will enable Nevada 2-1-1 to be the main source of prenatalinformation and referral services throughout the state," said Mary Liveratti, Nevada 2-1-1 state chair.

The previous 800 number used by the Health Division will be forwarded to Nevada 2-1-1 effective immediately and the 800 number will be phased out after six months. Calls to Nevada 2-1-1 are answered by a live operator who provides information and referral for prenatal, pediatric and perinatal (birth to age one) services.

Prior to being integrated into Nevada 2-1-1, the Maternal & Child Health line was available with limited hours. “Now callers will be able to access resources about prenatal care in the evenings and on the weekends with an easy-to-remember phone number,2-1-1," said Liveratti.

Viewed as the ideal subcontractor for the partnership, Nevada 2-1-1 offers statewide coverage, extended hours of service, a comprehensive reporting system and professionally trained information and referral specialists.

Nevada 2-1-1 is a statewide coalition of United Way of Southern Nevada, United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra, Crisis Call Center, HELP of Southern Nevada and the State of Nevada along with other non-profit and private businesses.
