New York, NY – August 4, 2011 – Tribeca Film announced today that it has acquired US and Canadian distribution rights to Newlyweds, actor/writer/director Edward Burns’ comedic relationship drama that had its world premiere as the Closing Night selection at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. A release in late 2011 is planned across multiple platforms.

Since the 1995 release of the critically-acclaimed The Brothers McMullen, Edward Burns has been an independent film renegade, utilizing cutting-edge technology to make quality motion pictures on low budgets while reaching wide audiences through new platforms such as iTunes and Video on Demand.

Newlyweds is the 10^th film written and directed by Burns. Shot in a fast paced 12 days exclusively in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood, the film is a chronicle of modern marriage complete with the crackling humor and sharp insights into contemporary relationships that Burns fans have come to love. The film tracks a newly wedded couple whose honeymoon period is upended by the arrival of the husband’s wild-child baby sister and the crumbling marriage of the wife’s meddlesome sister. A 21st Century Manhattan love story,Newlyweds highlights the unarguable truth that when you get married, you’re not just getting a husband or wife, you’re getting the family, the friends, and even the exes.

The cast includes Burns, Caitlin FitzGerald (It’s Complicated), Max Baker, Marsha Dietlein Bennett and Kerry Bishé (Nice Guy Johnny, Scrubs). Burns produced Newlyweds with producing partner Aaron Lubin and William Rexer. Mike Harrop served as executive producer.

New York, NY – July 28, 2011 – Tribeca Film announced today that it has acquired all distribution rights in the US and Canada to The Last Rites of Joe May, an emotionally powerful drama centering on a hustler (Dennis Farina, Get Shorty, Midnight Run, Snatch) traveling a winding road to redemption. Joe May, written and directed by Joe Maggio and produced by Stephanie Striegel and Bill Straus in association with Chicago’s Steppenwolf Films, had its world premiere in competition at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. In the spirit of classic 1970’s filmmaking, Joe May is the story of a sixty-something Chicagoan named Joe May, a short-money hustler of Rolex knockoffs and bootleg DVDs. Joe returns home from a lengthy hospital stay only to find that his landlord thought he was dead and rented out his apartment to Jenny (Jamie Anne Allman, AMC’s The Killing), a single mom with a young daughter. Begrudgingly, Joe accepts Jenny’s offer to share the apartment. Joe attempts to plot his comeback scheme with help from an old contact (Gary Cole), but instead a domino effect gets everything going against him. With his health failing and resources dwindling, Joe is presented with one last shot at redemption in the eyes of a community that’s all but left him for dead. Farina’s Joe May “is designed in the classic tough-guy mold, but the veteran character-actor’s performance also serves to disassemble it,” observed indieWIRE when the film played TFF.

SLACKER is a loving extended-family photo album, an insider’s ethnographic study of (mainly) 20-somethings trying to make sense of their world at the dawn of the 1990s. With an intriguing style inspired by Ophuls and Bresson, Richard Linklater’s break-out film follows an array of characters talking about ideas from books, movies, TV shows, music, and occasionally from direct observation and analysis. New York, NY – June 9, 2011 – Tribeca Film announced today that it has acquired select US distribution rights, including VOD, theatrical, digital, DVD and festival, to Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure from Closer Productions, written and directed by Matthew Bate and produced by Bate and Sophie Hyde. Shut Up Little Man! will be released nationwide on VOD August 25, 2011, and theatrically the same day (expanding on September 9), by Tribeca Film, a comprehensive distribution label operated by Tribeca Enterprises. The documentary premiered in competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and has played in New Directors/New Films and the True/False Film Festival.

Tribeca Film, supported by Founding Partner American Express, brings films to consumers across a range of platforms, including nationwide VOD, theatrical, DVD, pay-TV and digital.

In 1987, Eddie and Mitch, two young punks from the Midwest, moved into a low-rent tenament apartment in the Lower Haight district of San Francisco. Through paper-thin walls, they were informally introduced to their middle-aged alcoholic neighbors, the most unlikely of roommates—Raymond Huffman, a raging homophobe, and Peter Haskett, a flamboyant gay man. Night after night, the boys were treated to a seemingly endless stream of vodka-fueled altercations between the two and for 18 months, they hung a microphone from their kitchen window to chronicle the bizarre and violent relationship between their insane neighbors. Oftentimes nonsensical and always vitriolic, the diatribes of Peter and Ray were an audio goldmine just begging to be recorded and passed around on the underground tape market. Their tapes went on to inspire a cult following, spawning sell-out CD’s, comic artworks by Dan Clowes (Ghostworld), stage-plays, music from the likes of Devo and a Hollywood feeding Frenzy.

Shut Up Little Man! is the first film to be released from the South Australian Film Corporation's FILMLAB program with investment by the Adelaide Film Festival.

10th ANNUAL TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ATTENDANCE

New York, NY – May 3, 2010 – The 2011 Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), co-founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, and presented by Founding Sponsor American Express, today announced that more than 430,000 people attended screenings, panels, talks and free community events – including the opening night world premiere of Cameron Crowe’s The Union, the Tribeca Drive-In series, Street Fair and Family Festival, Tribeca/ESPN Sports Day, Tribeca Disruptive Innovation awards, and NYFest – during the Festival’s 10^th edition.

“We are lucky to have the best audiences in the world, and I was excited to see them respond so enthusiastically and embrace all aspects of our 10^th Festival,” said Nancy Schafer, Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Festival. “We all are feeling energized after seeing the incredible connection between filmmakers and the community this year. I am proud of what the Festival has become in its first decade, but more than that I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

Beginning on April 20 and running through May 1, the Festival hosted over 400 screenings and panels with over 95% attendance. 93 features and 60 short films from 40 countries were enjoyed by more than 115,000 movie-goers and panel attendees during the course of the 12 day Festival, with theaters frequently at capacity.

This year, the Tribeca (Online) Film Festival, presented by American Express, also offered a robust array of free content. Visitors to tribecafilm.com/tribecaonline watched a selection of features and shorts in the Streaming Room; interacted with experts from the worlds of film and technology through the Future of Film blog; connected with filmmakers through the Filmmaker Feed; and had questions answered by talent, industry notables and filmmakers in the enhanced Tribeca Q&A. The site also live-streamed events including red carpets, the Festival awards ceremony, and panels and talks including the Directors Series conversation between TFF Co-Founder Robert De Niro and Brian Williams.

TFF kicked off its 10^th edition with a free open-air screening of Cameron Crowe’s world premiere documentary The Union, followed by a performance from film subject Elton John as a thank you to the New York community at the North Cove at the World Financial Plaza. The event was the first of four free film screenings under the stars, and was followed by the Tribeca Drive-In series which featured Fame, When the Drum is Beating and The Muppets Take Manhattan, co-sponsored by JetBlue and Time Warner Cable and hosted by Brookfield. In total, 9,300 enjoyed free, outdoor films and interactive entertainment from music to Muppets.

Festival organizers and NYPD Community Affairs Officer Rick Lee estimated that a crowd of 300,000 enjoyed the signature Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and Tribeca/ESPN Sports Day on Saturday, April 30. The annual event, which featured live entertainment and family fun including performances from the casts of seven Broadway shows, visits from NY Knicks and Rangers, and even a photo-op with Bubby’s giant faux cow, took place in the Tribeca neighborhood.

This year the festival added four additional blocks to the footprint of the Street Fair. Visitors and families mingled shoulder to shoulder for almost the entire day at the fair, which stretched down Greenwich Street from Chambers to Hubert streets, and in Washington Market Park. The day included free community events, activities, performances, and celebrations by local merchants and community groups.

More than 1,800 attendees joined the conversation at the Festival’s 10 free panels and discussions, while events hosted by the Tribeca Film Institute drew a total of 4,200 attendees. 1,650 also participated in the inaugural NYFest, the city’s first Film and Entertainment Soccer Tournament in conjunction with TFF and in partnership with Umbro.

2011 Tribeca Film Festival Facts, Figures and anecdotes:

In all, 156 of 170 directors attended TFF, from a range of distances. The shortest: Edward Burns, a longtime resident of the Tribeca neighborhood. The longest: Kivu Ruhorahoza, of Grey Matter, whose total round trip flight from Rwanda totaled nearly 40 hours.
The Festival hosted three Rwandan short filmmakers, who presented films they made with support from the Tribeca Film Institute. The TFF screening was not only the first time they had seen their movies on a big screen -- it was the first time they had ever been in a movie theater.
A total of 803 delegates attended TFF – 691 from the U.S. and 112 from countries including Bulgaria, Israel, Norway and South Korea.
At the premiere of eventual Heineken Audience Award Winner Give Up Tomorrow, the filmmakers brought 12 guests up for the Q&A after the film, including family members of subject Paco Larrañaga and activists who traveled to TFF from the Philippines, London, and Spain. The film received an extended standing ovation all the way through the credits and as the guests took the stage.
On the day that World Narrative Competition entry Jesus Henry Christ had its world premiere, star Toni Collette gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The audience made a short video to congratulate the star and new mom.
Powerful documentaries including The Bully Project, Renee, Give Up Tomorrow and Sing Your Song received standing ovations at premieres and screenings, while documentary subjects from Carol Channing to Harry Belafonte to Ozzy Osbourne received outpourings of love from audiences – and in Ozzy’s case, an impersonator was even in the audience.
The Trip stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon performed their dueling Michael Caine impressions at the audiences’ request during their premiere.
20 Film Fellows graduated from the Tribeca Film Institute’s youth education program after 12 days of experiencing the Festival with filmmaker badges and access, and premiering their short films during TFF.
In a TFF full of milestones, two crew members marked their 10^th Festival as volunteers with Tribeca: Elaine Harrison and Sheila Lee who, for the 10^th consecutive year, took time off from her job as a nurse to volunteer at TFF.

· Kansas-based Ethan McCord, the subject of Tribeca short documentary winner Incident In New Baghdad, attended the festival with his girlfriend Tammy and an engagement ring. He proposed in Times Square and she accepted.

2011 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES HEINEKEN AUDIENCE AWARD WINNER – GIVE UP TOMORROW

New York, NY [April 30, 2011] – The 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), co-founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, and presented by founding sponsor American Express, announced the winner of the Heineken Audience Award – Give Up Tomorrow – tonight at Eye Beam in New York City. The film’s director, Michael Collins, will receive a cash prize of $25,000.

Throughout the Festival, which kicked off on April 20, audiences have been able to vote for the Heineken Audience Award by completing nomination ballots upon exiting screenings of TFF films. Films in the World Narrative Competition, World Documentary Competition, Viewpoints, Spotlight and Cinemania sections were eligible for the Heineken Audience Award, the audience choice for best feature film. Final results were tabulated and announced during this evening’s Festival wrap party.

Give Up Tomorrow received a Special Jury Mention in the World Documentary Competition at this year’s TFF and played to rapturous response and standing ovations. The film was also supported by the Tribeca Film Institute’s Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund, and the filmmaker is an alumnus of the Tribeca Film Institute’s Tribeca All Access program.

The film tells the story of culinary student Paco Larrañaga, who, at 19 years old in 1997, was arrested for the kidnap, rape, and murder of two sisters on the provincial island of Cebu in the Philippines. Despite demonstrable evidence of his innocence, including 40 eyewitnesses and photographs placing him hundreds of miles from the scene, Paco’s legal ordeal was only just beginning. Dubbed the Philippines’ “trial of the century,” Paco’s ordeal became a galvanizing focal point in a far-reaching exposé of gross miscarriage of justice at the highest levels.

Following the case and its aftermath for more than a decade, the film traces Paco’s story from the ethnic and class tensions at its roots, through a distracting thread of tabloid sensationalism, and ultimately to appeals and interventions from foreign governments and NGOs as the injustice of Paco’s situation becomes ever more stark and undeniable.

“From the first standing ovation of Give Up Tomorrow at its premiere at the Festival it was clear that audiences were passionate about the portrayal of Paco Larrañaga's unjust incarceration. We hope that the film will raise awareness of Paco’s plight and lead to his freedom," said Nancy Schafer, Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Festival. [April 28, 2011 – New York, NY] – The 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival, co-founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, and presented by founding sponsor American Express, announced the winners of its competition categories tonight at a ceremony hosted at the W Union Square in New York City. The Festival runs through May 1, 2011.

The world competition winners for narrative and documentary films were chosen from 12 narrative and 12 documentary features from 21 countries. Best New Director prizes were awarded for both narrative and documentary films, selected from all feature films by a first-time director throughout the program. Awards were also given for the best narrative short, best documentary short and student visionary films in the short film competitions. This year’s Festival included 93 features and 60 short films from 40 countries.

This year the Festival introduced new annual awards in the narrative competition for Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay, and in the documentary competition for Best Editing. Also announced at the awards were the Tribeca (Online) Film Festival feature and short film winners selected by the online audience. The winner of the Heineken Audience Award, determined by audience votes throughout the Festival, will be announced on April 30.

“It’s wonderful to have reached our 10^th edition and to be able to celebrate with all of these gifted filmmakers. Jury Comments: “Haunting, resonant, but never posed. Conventional shots become dangerous. With balanced storytelling that moves between danger and innocence, this film speaks of sex, adolescence, power, and ambition. It is original and authentic.”

Best Actor in a Narrative Feature Film – Ramadhan “Shami” Bizimana as Yvan in Grey Matter (Matière Grise), directed and written by Kivu Ruhorahoza (Rwanda, Australia). Winner receives $2,500. The award was given by Rula Jebreal.

Jury Comments: “In a world shattered by genocide, this performance was so pure.”

Best Actress in a Narrative Feature Film – Carice van Houten as Ingrid Jonker in Black Butterflies, directed by Paula van der Oest, written by Greg Latter (Germany, Netherlands, South Africa). Winner receives $2,500. The award was given by Rula Jebreal.

Jury Comments: “There are a million colors in this complicated performance. We award this honor for bravery and fragility, and for showing tremendous range and strength throughout.”

Best Cinematography in a Narrative Feature Film – Luisa Tillinger, Artificial Paradises (Paraisos Artificiales) (Mexico). Winner receives $5,000 and $50,000 in post production services provided by Company 3. The award was given by Rula Jebreal.

Jury Comments: “A beautiful portrait of landscape and emotion.”

Best Screenplay for a Narrative Feature Film – Jannicke Systad Jabobsen, Turn Me On, Goddammit (Få meg på, for faen) (Norway). Winner receives $5,000. The award was given by Rula Jebreal.

BEST NEW NARRATIVE DIRECTOR:

(Austin, TX)--The Austin Film Society and The Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas are excited to announce that 23 of the most celebrated Austin filmmakers will remake vignettes from AFS Founder & Artistic Director Richard Linklater’s seminal film SLACKER. This homage project was conceived by The Alamo Drafthouse team to celebrate SLACKER's 20th anniversary year by bringing the film community together to honor one of Texas' best homegrown films. AFS came aboard with a stellar group of filmmakers and a Kickstarter-like campaign to raise an additional $60,000 toward the 2011 Texas Filmmakers Production Fund (accepting applications until June 1).

Each scene will be recreated, using the original dialogue and locations (whenever possible), and individual scenes will then be compiled to create the remake, presenting the city’s changing face while showcasing some of its most exciting talent. Donations of $50 or higher to SLACKER 2011 will receive a ticket to the World Premiere on August 31stwith the remake filmmakers and Richard Linklater in attendance for Q&A. [New York, NY – April 28, 2011] – The Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) today announced several program award winners and grantees at the TFI Awards Luncheon at Riverpark NYC during the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. Two winners of the Tribeca All Access (TAA) Creative Promise Awards presented by Time Warner; seven new TAA alumni grants and fellowships; four winners of the Latin America Media Arts Fund; and four grantees supported by Insurgent Media for the inaugural TFI Documentary Fund were all presented today, totaling $125,000 in funds.

“This year’s winners and grantees are true examples of the incredible strength of films and talent resulting from the support of the Tribeca Film Institute,” said Beth Janson, Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Institute. “Our main hope is that these films go on to completion and build strong relationships with audiences.”

The winners were selected from 12 projects based on the strength of their vision and filmmaking promise. The 2011 TAA Creative Promise Awards, presented by Time Warner, comes with a total prize of $20,000: $10,000 for narrative and $10,000 for documentary, as well as an original piece of art from a contemporary artist. The 2011 Narrative jurors were Hiam Abbass, Ajay Naidu and F. Gary Gray. The 2011 Documentary jurors were Elvis Mitchell, Suroosh Alvi, and John Quinones. Now in its eighth year, TAA was created to help foster and nurture relationships between film industry executives and filmmakers from traditionally underrepresented communities.

TAA also extended its programming and support for alumni this year including $25,000 in grants and fellowships for past TAA projects in development or new works by program alumni. The following grants were announced today:

The Battle for Land (Columbia), Directed by Juan Mejia-- The Battle for Land delves deep into the complexities of mass displacement pushing us past prevailing ideas where displacement is seen as an aberration of war, and progressively revealing a more intricate and terrifying picture. It is above all a journey deep into the heart of uprooting and the dark side of progress.

Cocaine Prison (Bolivia), Directed by Violeta Ayala-- Trying to establish a cocaine business inside Bolivia's craziest prison an unlikely friendship develops, between two 'little fish', a young ambitious trafficker and a middle-aged cocaine worker fighting for release, personifying the country's love affair with cocaine.

Toys (Mexico), Directed by Alba Mora-Roca-- Toys explores how a family's peculiar love for toys helps children overcome the effects of violence in Mexico. It follows a Mexican-Japanese family who, having gathered the largest toy collection in Latin America, travels north to do workshops with victims of the violence generated by fighting drug cartels.

When Two Worlds Collide (Peru), Directed by Taira Akbar and Heidi Brandenburg-- An indigenous leader forced into exile and facing 20 years in prison for resisting the environmental ruin of Amazonian lands by big business. Refusing to surrender he continues his quest, shedding light on conflicting visions shaping the fate of the Amazon and the climate future of our world.

The four selected films will each receive $10,000 in grants and guidance by TFI and were selected by a jury consisting of Benicio Del Toro, Paola Mendoza and Mónica Lozano.

Four additional grantees of the TFI Documentary Fund were also announced through the backing of NY-based Insurgent Media. Insurgent Media was founded by Andrew Karsch, Erik Gordon and Fisher Stevens and is a central innovator in the production and distribution of thought-provoking filmed content. The recipients announced today include:

Teenage, Directed by Matt Wolf and written by Jon Savage– Teenage is an unconventional historical film about youth culture based on an acclaimed book by the punk author Jon Savage. The film examines the invention of modern teenagers in wartime America with profiles of extraordinary adolescents.

Of Monsters and Men, Directed by Morgan Matthews– Of Monsters and Men is a fascinating and touching portrait of men who are obsessed with monsters and their adventures to find them.

Smash & Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers, Directed by Havana Marking and Producer by Mike Lerner– Smash & Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers, in their own words, the most successful jewel thieves of all time take you into their world: the post-Milosovic Balkans, the modern diamond trade and a 21st Century crime gang.

Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, Directed by Ramona Diaz – Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey follows the real life rock-n-roll fairy tale story of Filipino Arnel Pineda, who was plucked from You Tube to become the front man for iconic American rock band, Journey, thereby becoming the latest performer to go from the Internet to real life celebrity.

The TFI Documentary Fund grantees will receive $10,000 each in grants as well as guidance and consultation from TFI on the film’s production. Benefits include: festival and distribution planning and strategizing sessions; fundraising; and industry and/or crew match-making and introductions. The Fund was created to further the development of character-driven documentaries.

“We are supporting nearly 30 documentary projects in 2011 representing a broad spectrum of ideas from around the globe and offering a good mix of artists’ experience,” said Ryan Harrington, TFI’s Director of Documentary Programming. “TFI is excited and proud to continue to grow and strengthen the resources that we provide to our filmmakers.”

Grants which were previously announced were also recognized at the annual awards ceremony including: TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund grantees, provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the TFI Documentary Fund HBO Fellowships.

During this year’s Tribeca Film Festival (April 20-May 1), TFI filmmakers from programs including Tribeca All Access and the TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund, participated in one-on-one industry meetings on Tuesday, April 26 and Wednesday, April 27 to network with film industry executives, potential investors, development executives, producers and agents.

Tribeca All Access is made possible by Bloomberg, with major support from Time Warner and additional support from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Academy Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts and the NYS Department Cultural Affairs. Mitchell’s Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon. The 10^th edition of the Festival will take place from April 20 to May 1 in lower Manhattan.

Detachment is the latest absorbing, multi-layered character study by Kaye (American History X), chronicling the intertwining lives of several high school teachers, administrators and students. Adrien Brody leads a star-studded cast that includes Christina Hendricks, Lucy Liu, James Caan, Marcia Gay Harden, Blythe Danner, Tim Blake Nelson, William Petersen and Bryan Cranston. Talihina Sky is an energetic, behind-the-scenes look at the multiplatinum Kings of Leon, who had a remarkable rise from Pentecostal Southern roots to the top of the charts. The pioneering digital initiative will allow domestic audiences to view feature and short films for free and worldwide audiences to engage with filmmakers and industry experts as TFF’s 10^th edition runs concurrently in lower Manhattan from April 20 to May 1.

The debut of the 2011 Tribeca (Online) Film Festival offers film enthusiasts nationwide new avenues to experience a film festival. Tribeca (Online) is employing the latest digital video and web technology to deliver an immersive, interactive experience unlike any other, re-contextualizing Festival content and presentation.

The multi-dimensional experience features five areas: Festival Streaming Room, Live From..., Tribeca Q&A, Filmmaker Feed, and the Future of Film blog.

· The Streaming Room will host six feature films from the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, including two that are making their world premieres at TFF, and 18 short films, four of which are world premieres, and 9 of which retrospective short films from past Tribeca Film Festivals. Each film will have three to five 24-hour screening windows, during which there will be a select number of “seats” available. · Tribeca Q&A, which launches today, will offer the online audience the opportunity to engage with the larger online community, one another, and experts by submitting questions to a pool of 20-25 exciting film and new media experts from Tribeca’s Jane Rosenthal, Geoff Gilmore, and Nancy Schafer, to Whoopi Goldberg, and Brian Williams, and filmmakers David Gordon Green, and Zach Braff, plus a host of participating Tribeca (Online) filmmakers, programmers, actors, jurors, film experts, and more. Community members will vote on individual questions, and top-rated queries will be submitted for official response, made available to the public.

· The Filmmaker Feed contains aggregated information on all Tribeca (Online) Film Festival filmmakers, each of whom will have a custom page on the feed, with a biography, interviews, favorite links, social media feeds (Twitter/Facebook), blog posts, vide updates, and more;

· The Future of Film blog, brings together experts from the worlds of film and technology to comment on the ever-changing media environment in featured posts. Participants will be announced early April;

· Donor Unknown, directed by Jerry Rothwell. (UK) – North American Premiere, Documentary. JoEllen Marsh grew up knowing her father only as Donor 150. As one of the first generation of “test-tube babies,” she yearns for connection with potential siblings, and turns to the Internet to track them down. As JoEllen slowly broadens her family tree, in the process she forges a fascinatingly modern model of family. After connecting with dozens of siblings across the country, JoEllen decides it’s finally time to seek out Donor 150.

· Flowers of Evil (Fleurs du Mal), directed by David Dusa, written by David Dusa, Raphaëlle Maes, and Louise MolieÌre. (France) – North American Premiere, Narrative. Paris-Tehran. A rootless story of young love between Gecko, an Algerian-French hotel bellman and parkourer, and Anahita, an Iranian student forced to leave her country for her own safety after the controversial elections in 2009. Obsessed with tracking the political movement, Anahita’s friends broadcast through YouTube and coordinate via Twitter. Romance and the Internet become the ground to explore histories lost and identity yet to be found. In French, Farsi with English subtitles.

· My Last Round (Mi Último Round), directed and written by Julio Jorquera. (Chile, Argentina) – North American Premiere, Narrative. When successful boxer Octavio falls in love with kitchen hand Hugo, they move from their small-town homes in the south of Chile to capital city Santiago to protect their taboo relationship. But when Hugo feels unexpected desire for co-worker Jennifer, Octavio is left heartbroken and throws himself into a high-stakes boxing match against all odds. A handsome cast and evocative cinematography offer a sexy, subtle film that evokes hits like The Wrestler and Brokeback Mountain. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Neon Flesh (Carne de Neon), directed and written by Paco Cabezas. (Spain, Argentina, Sweden) – North American Premiere. Young hustler Ricky was left to a life on the streets at the age of 12 when his hooker mother got sent to the can, but upon learning she’ll soon be released, Ricky enlists a couple of good-for-nothing buddies to help him open a whorehouse as a tribute to Mom. This stylish, edgy crime flick plunges headlong into the fringe world of pimps and junkies where succeeding in business can cost your life…. In Spanish with English subtitles

New York Says Thank You, directed by Scott Rettberg. (USA) – World Premiere, Documentary. New York Says Thank You is an epic story following the journey of New Yorkers whose lives were touched by September 11 as they travel the country helping communities rebuild after disasters. Along the way, they face their emotions and ultimately triumph over tragedy through an idea that evolved from a five-year-old New York City boy.

Rabies (Kalevet), directed and written by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado. (Israel) – North American Premiere. A psychotic serial killer on the loose in the woods crosses paths with a group of unsuspecting teenagers. Soon people are dying one by one… but the bad guy isn’t who you think. Turning genre conventions on their head with a smart script and plenty of unexpected scares, Rabies is a surprising debut worthy of its mantle as Israel's first-ever slasher horror film. Out of work and unable to tell his family he’s been fired, a young New Yorker of Japanese descent finds utopian escapism by spending his days and weeks at the local arcade.

The Tribe, (USA), Documentary, directed by Tiffany Shlain (2006). Recipient of 15 awards including IndieWire’s Sundance Critics’ Choice Award in 2006. Barbie dolls and the history of Jewish people actually have quite a lot in common according to this documentary short.

Spring 2011 Release Set for True-Life Story of Photojournalists Who Documented the Fall of Apartheid Rule in South Africa

New York, NY [November 17, 2010] – Tribeca Film has acquired US rights to The Bang Bang Club, a gripping drama based on the incredible lives of a group of young photojournalists whose graphic images drew the world’s attention to South Africa during the last stages of apartheid while enduring the stresses, tensions, and moral dilemmas of working in situations of extreme conflict.

The Bang Bang Club was the name given to four young photographers, Greg Marinovich, Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek and Joao Silva, whose photographs captured the final bloody days of white rule in South Africa and the final demise of apartheid. The film, based on the page-turning book of the same name, tells the remarkable and sometimes harrowing story of these young men – and the extraordinary extremes they went to in order to capture their pictures. The film stars Ryan Phillippe (Stop-Loss), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights), Neels Van Jaarsveld and Frank Rautenbach.

The character-driven drama, written and directed by Steven Silver (The Diameter of a Bomb), had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film is a Foundry Films/Out of Africa production from producers Daniel Iron, Lance Samuels and Adam Friedlander.

Tribeca Film will release it theatrically in the second quarter of 2011, as well as on video-on-demand, and other platforms.

Eight new titles added to Festival Programme

18 October 2010 (Doha. Qatar) - The Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) today announced that internationally acclaimed Egyptian actress Yosra has been appointed President of the Jury for the 2^nd annual Festival, October 26 – 30, 2010.

Yosra replaces previously announced Jury President Hany Abu-Assad who has had to step back from his role due to a delay in production with his latest film, The Courier, currently shooting on location in Louisiana.

Yosra will be joined by four other outstanding and diverse members of the film industry who comprise the inaugural jury – prolific Academy Award nominated actress, producer and director Salma Hayek Pinault (Frida, Ugly Betty), English actor, writer, and director Nick Moran (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels),Indian director Bhavna Talwar (Dharm) and Bosnian screenwriter and film director of the Academy Award winning No Man’s Land, Danis Tanovic. Together they will choose the winners of the Festival’s Arab Film Competition: Best Arab Film and Best Arab Filmmaker who will each receive monetary awards of US$100,000.

Additionally, the festival has also added seven more feature films to its programme - including Andrew Lau’s Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen, John Curran’s Stone starring Robert De Niro and Edward Norton, Machete starring Jessica Alba, Danny Trejo and Don Johnson, Casino Jack starring Kevin Spacey and a special IMAX presentation of Paranormal Activity 2.

Two previously unannounced Indian films Rakht Charitra by Ramgopal Verma and Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan will also have their Qatar premiere at the festival and one new title, Champs Elysees Je t’aime, has been added to the Arab Short Film Competition. ABOUT THE DTFF 2010 JURY

Yosra is one of the major cinema figures in the Arab world. Having held the lead roles in numerous films, she has been granted over fifty cinema awards. She has also starred in highly popular serial television dramas and released an album as a singer. Yosra represented the Egyptian actors to discuss potential improvements of their professional conditions with President Mubarak. As a UNDP good will ambassador, she actively fights against human trafficking, poverty and child abuse. She also supports street children, as well as various educational and environmental causes.

Academy Award nominated actress Salma Hayek Pinault has proven herself as a prolific actress, producer, director, and activist. She received an Academy Award Nomination, a Golden Globe Nomination, a SAG Nomination, and a BAFTA Nomination for Best Actress for the title role in Julie Taymor's Frida. She produced the highly successful series Ugly Betty for American television and won an Emmy for her directorial debut, The Maldinado Miracle. Hayek continues to support, educate and fight for such causes as life-threatening maternal and neonatal tetanus; domestic violence education, awareness and prevention; as well as various humanitarian and environmental causes.

Forced to stop his university studies during the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, Bosnian film director and screenwriter Danis Tanovicwent on a dangerous two-year mission to follow the Army closely with a camera crew to produce documentary footage. Tanovic’s first narrative feature, No Man’s Land, won a total of 42 awards, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2001, the European Film Academy Award for Best Screenplay, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002.

As an actor Nick Moran made his name with roles in hit films such as Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. In 2008, Moran marked his directorial debut with Telstar, the story of songwriter and music producer Joe Meek which he co-wrote and directed for both stage and screen. The Kid, his second feature film as a director, screens at this year’s Doha Tribeca Film Festival.

Bhavna Talwar, the renowned and critically acclaimed National Award winning director, is amongst the new breed of Indian directors, blending Indian storytelling and sensitivity with Western technique and style. A Gucci Group Award Nominee at Venice, Bhavna's debut film, Dharm, has received raving reviews from critics and the media alike, and was chosen as the closing film at the World Cinema Section at the Cannes Film Festival 2007.

(Austin, TX)--The Austin Film Society is pleased to announce Catherine Robb of Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold, LLP taking the helm as the President of the Board, and adds three new directors to its Board: actor and producer Todd Allen, retired Xerox executive Gloria Castro, and Troublemaker Studios business manager Kevin Dartt. Each new director serves a three-year term.

“Our board leadership includes many of Austin’s leading lights in the creative industries,” said AFS Executive Director Rebecca Campbell. “We are privileged to have their guidance and support and amazed that they find time to volunteer on behalf of the film community.”

Catherine Robb is a media and entertainment lawyer with Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold, LLP. Her practice is focused on commercial and business litigation, First Amendment litigation, copyright and trademark litigation, open government issues and privacy concerns. She earned her J.D., 1998, with honors, from the University of Texas School of Law and her B.A. from The University of Virginia.

Actor-writer-producer Todd Allen, a graduate of University of Texas at Austin, has appeared in over 50 films and television programs. Among the more notable are three films with director Lawrence Kasdan, SILVERADO, GRAND CANYON, and WYATT EARP. Todd also co-starred with Robert Duvall in his Academy Award-nominated THE APOSTLE and again in the Emmy-Award winning AMC original mini-series, BROKEN TRAIL.
Gloria Castro made Austin her hometown in 2006, after concluding a long career with Xerox Corporation. Originally joining the southern region office of Xerox in Dallas, she progressed through a number of management roles in Human Resources in Dallas and at the company’s national headquarters in Rochester, NY. Later Gloria moved to southern California, where for several years she was of head of HR for the company’s western region, which included the continental US, Alaska and Hawaii. Her last role was with the international division at the corporate headquarters in Stamford, CT, as HR manager for Latin American operations, covering Mexico, South and Central America. A life-long film fan, Gloria served as board member and president of Cine Las Americas in Austin.
Kevin Dartt is general counsel and studio manager for Troublemaker Studios. Prior to joining Troublemaker, Kevin was an entertainment attorney with Graves, Dougherty, Hearon and Moody.
Other moves include Jann Baskett, a principal with Flashbang Agency, taking over the role of Board Vice President, filmmaker George Sledge its Secretary and Rodney Gibbs of Ricochet Labs as Treasurer. Outgoing board members include Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith and Janet Pierson, producer of South by Southwest Film Festival. Pierson will sit on the AFS Advisory Board.

(Austin, TX) - The Austin Film Society is very proud to announce the recipients of its 2010 Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund(TFPF) and Travel Grant programs, which this year gave away a total of $111,000 in cash and goods and services to 33 projectsfrom emerging Texas filmmakers. AFS has now given out over $1.1 million to 293 film and video projects since the program began in 1996.

Cash grants totaling $93,000 and $6,000 worth of Kodak film stock and $5,000 in in-kind services from Seattle-based Alpha Cine Labs will be dispersed to 24 projects to recipients of the Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund, adding to cash grants totaling $7,000 in stipends already dispersed to 10 Texas filmmakers via the Travel Grant program. The largest grant this year went to Ausinite Patrick Bresnan’s documentary feature VIETNAM APPRECIATION DAY, about a subculture of Vietnam War reenactors in suburban Pennsylvania. He received a $9,000 post-production grant for the film.

"The Austin Film Society is humbled by the hundreds of individuals and companies that contributed to make this year's Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund possible," said Rebecca Campbell, executive director of the Austin Film Society. "It goes to show how committed our community is to independent, diverse voices in filmmaking."

Three Austin filmmakers who made award-winning first features received $7,000 grants to help complete their second films. Bob Byington will follow up the festival darling comedy HARMONY AND ME with SEVEN CHINESE BROTHERS, set to star Patton Oswalt (RATATOUILLE, BIG FAN). Kyle Henry received a grant to complete the 4th and final segment of his omnibus feature FOURPLAY, which began an innovative festival-and-digital-download release earlier this summer. And, Chris Eska, winner of the John Cassavetes Award at the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards for his debut AUGUST EVENING, received a grant for the Civil War-set drama SEPTEMBER MORNING.

Two feature documentaries also received $7,000 grants - Ruth Villatoro’s THE CANTINERA, which follows the daily lives of three “cantineras” in Houston – women hired by Latin bars to drink with their male clients; and Susanne Mason’s RETURN TO SENDER which examines the difficult transition faced by prisoners after they are released.

Projects from outside of Austin also fared well this year. Four filmmakers from Houston received grants – Villatoro’s THE CANTINERA,Roberto Minervini’s narrative feature MARFA RED, Jenalia Moreno & Nancy Sarnoff’s documentary STITCHED and Mary Magsamen & Stephan Hillerbrand’s experimental short FOUR PLACE SETTING.  Two projects by El Paso filmmakers received grants – Elvira Carrizal-Dukes’ narrative feature OCHOA and Mikey Reyes & Carlos Corral’s narrative short RED SANDS. San Antonio filmmaker Will Shipley received a grant for his narrative short MENTIROSO and Laredo filmmaker Marcela Moran received a grant for her documentary short JORNALEROS.

AFS raises funds for TFPF through the annual Texas Film Hall of Fame and major premieres like ME AND ORSON WELLES, PREDATORS and MACHETE. AFS also successfully raised $40,000 for TFPF through online donation and direct mail campaigns this summer. The final grant decisions were made by a panel of three acclaimed filmmakers from outside of the state – Sam Green, the Oscar-nominated director of the documentary THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND; Emily Hubley, director of many award-winning animated shorts and the feature THE TOE TACTIC which premiered at SXSW in 2008; and Alex Rivera, director of the sci-fi feature SLEEP DEALER, winner of two awards at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

AFS Director of Artist Services Bryan Poyser administered the 2010 TFPF and he was assisted by TFPF coordinators Elin Dunigan and Emily Robinson.

AFS: What is the movie or project about?
GP: A young man tries to avoid a conversation about pregnancy with his girlfriend by chasing a mouse around his apartment.

Are there any memorable moments in receiving the grant?

This was one of the first grants I’d ever applied for, so I was incredibly meticulous in the budget I submitted. I met John Pierson, who was one of the judges, a few years later, and he laughed, remembering that the amount I’d requested was calculated to the penny.
Since receiving the grant, how has it affected your career as a working artist?
MOUSE was a key moment in my career — it was the first film that I’d directed that really broke through to a large number of film festivals and television venues. It opened a number of doors for me, helping me meet people, festivals, and organizations that would end up being key partners in helping me get my feature film ROBOT STORIES out into the world a few years later.

QUADRANGLE is an unconventional documentary about two "conventional" couples that swapped partners and lived in a group marriage in the early 1970s. Coming out of the era of free love, and struggling with the monotony of marriage and suburban life, Deanna and Paul began swapping partners with another middle class married couple. This four-way affair became a kind of domestic living experiment when the two couples moved into one home, along with their children. While their individual marriages were failing, they found that together they were happy and thought they had discovered an alternative to divorce - a brave new world that would pave the way for how couples would live in the future. Instead it unraveled. Both couples divorced and married their foursome partners, but they could never truly separate because they were bound by the children they shared.

Proceeds will go toward supporting QUADRANGLE's Academy-Award qualifying run in Los Angeles. QUADRANGLE is a fiscally-sponsored project of the Austin Film Society.More information & tickets >>

(Austin, TX)—Troublemaker Studios, the Austin Film Societyand The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema are excited to announce an explosive sneak preview of MACHETE directed by Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis, with Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez leading an all-star cast, on Thursday, September 2 at8 PM at The Paramount Theater (713 Congress Avenue). All tickets include admission to the official stunt-filled after-party atAustin Studios (1901 E 51st Street).

About the film:
He looked like just another day laborer from the streets, and the perfect fall guy for a crooked political assassination. But he turned out to be Machete (Danny Trejo), a legendary ex-federale with a deadly attitude and the skills to match. Left for dead after clashing with notorious Mexican drug kingpin Torrez (Steven Seagal), Machete has escaped to Texas, looking to disappear and forget his tragic past. But what he finds is a web of corruption and deceit that leaves a bullet in a senator and Machete a wanted man.

Machete sets out to clear his name and expose a deep conspiracy. Helping Machete even the odds are Luz (Michelle Rodriguez)—a sexy taco-truck lady with a rebellious spirit and revolutionary heart, and Padre (Cheech Marin)—a priest who’s good with blessings, but better with guns. Carving a path of bullets, blood, and broken hearts, Machete’s quest ultimately leads him back to Torrez for an epic battle of revenge and redemption.

There will be a pre-sale ticket purchase window for Austin Film Society members, MACHETE crew and Fantastic Fest badgeholders from August 17th until August 20th at Noon. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on at 12 PM Saturday, August 21 through (866) 9PROTIX, protixonline.com or the Paramount Theatre box office.

All tickets include Q&A with the filmmakers and entrance to the official after-party at Austin Studios. Pricing as follows:

$100 – premium orchestra seating 
$50 – rear orchestra and mezzanine seating
$30 – balcony seating
