So you may have noticed some rather obvious changes to the blog like the look and feel, and the name. This is a sign of the change to come. The blog is changing into a beacon of truth surrounding all details of this project: the production, the cast & crew, and will serve as the ultimate voice of truth for the film, and for me.

I hope you continue to stick with me if for no other reason than to hear some great stories. The blog will continue to be updated infrequently in the new year (that is my commitment to you), and I hope to hear from many people through Twitter.

Site's Down. Don't Frown.

Yes the official film site http://www.universalgroovemovie.com/ is down. Hosting company is upgrading servers again, and they'll be back on line shortly (by Monday I suspect). That being said the servers aren't the only things that are changing.

The site will be sproting a brand new look, and we'll probably be moving off this Blogspot page to our own hosted WordPress (yay!)

I've been dabbling with the Twitterverse of late, and I started a UG Twitter that you can follow here: http://www.twitter.com/ugmovie It's sparse right now, but it'll start being updated on a more regular basis.

I've noted that there are a few Facebook pages for the film out there, however I'll eventually get around to putting up a Facebook page for the film.

While the project is still not available for anyone to purchase, there is some news around the corner, and hopefully some of you will be able to see the film soon.

Corey Haim Passes To The Other Side

At 8:47am EST my phone was buzzing with a text message from someone out west; it read: Corey Haim found dead this morning in LA. Wasn't he in your movie??

Yes he was.

I was taken back having working very closely with him during the production; I am sad for his family; and I am sad for his fans. So shocking considering his life long battle with drugs, and his apparent recent getting it together. It's exceptionally sad when someone so young dies...well before their time.

I had the opportunity to not just work with him, but speak to him on a personal level during the shoot some 10 years ago, and he was full of energy and brimming with spirit and dreams. Constantly searching and shooting for that comeback, and hoping that "this" --whatever moment he was in--would be that critical moment.

We are sad to see him go, and glad that we have a piece of his soul on record for all of time in his self professed 30th film.

Funny to note that Corey was the one who dubbed me 'Deep; and it's been my nickname ever since. Near the end of the production I traded him my blue Hard Rock Cafe hat (he's wearing it in some promotional footage for a golf tournament that he participated in some time ago) for a yellow and black checkered shirt of his--I still have it...my timeless memory of the production from the months our lives were intertwined.

I remember the first time meeting him in a restaurant with Judy trying to convince him to join the project; I remember the first time I picked him up to take him to the production meeting--cleverly running out of gas; and I remember seeing The Lost Boys in a pre-screening in Dorval with a bunch of friends in '86 never even crossing my mind that I'd end up working with Corey one day.

There are many fond memories of the production, and this '80s heart-throb by myself and yourselves. No matter what anyone has ever said of his career, his comeback, his successes and his failures the world has proven time and time again that everyone wanted to talk about Corey Haim, and everyone wanted to know what he was up to.

He will be missed the world over.

To The Fans: Please know that the film is truly complete, and has been since 2008. In an effort to meet the needs of everyone who's written in, and who's shown support of the film, and our tribulations I'll get it out to you somehow.

The Groove, The Bad, and The Augh!

Some of you have E-mailed me have pointed out some fairly obvious things, so I thought it best to add another entry as my attention turns back to Universal Groove in 2010:

1) the blog hasn't been updated in a while

2) you can't find a copy of Universal Groove anywhere despite the web site stating that it's available

3) the web site hasn't been updated in forever

4) there is no web site anymore

5) no matter how hard you try you still want to see it

To be quite honest things have become a bit of a mess of late with this film. Yes it *IS* completed. (May 2008) There exists a picture locked version, and an about as final cut as it's going to get cut.

However since post-production ended Francois and I have gone our separate ways over disagreements on another project, and he falsely believes that I shipped him out to sea (as it were). As a result we're haven't touched antennae on this project and it's stalled (again).

I am unable to get hold of the film masters so any distro deal that we were working on isn't going to move until the masters make an appearance.

So now that the bad news has been delivered, what is the good?

The Universal Groove web site will go back up in the next month with updates. The hosting company is upgrading their entire infrastructure. This gives me the time to update it and throw it back up.

I spent the better part of 2009 clearing my plate and ignoring this project because of the sheer emotional damage that it does to me every time I pick it up, but now my attention is returned. I'm working on a "making of story" following the making of Universal Groove that will go through the development, production, and post-production experiences...the trials and tribulations of this entire project. Essentially my catharsis so I can finally move one. I hope to have it ready for your consumption in the first half of this year.

As for will the film be released? If ever, I suspect it'll take the moving of mountains, the re-birth of a star and the tracking down of the masters to make it happen; not impossible, just not possible today.

Wheph! What a long ride it's been, and we're inching ever closer to the end of it all. Everyone's getting ready to jump on to new projects, as we're tying off the loose ends for this flick; and *everyone* seems to be going their own separate ways to blaze whatever paths they can into the light of the future.

That being said there's still a lot of reason to keep this blog site up and about, and more current than it's ever been by letting everyone know what we're doing, and as we hit our strides heading for the door.

Thank you all for hanging in there, and thank you all for keeping the faith. We won't disappoint, and those who haven't seen the film yet are due to see it very soon at a store near you.

So it took quite a bit longer to get the packages together than originally expected, and then the initial delay on getting things out, but now finally everything is moving this March 2008.

Just about everything from the first 1,000 has gone out (sorry for those who're still waiting), and we're on top of our production again--yay for us! Which really means super yay for those of you who got in on that action. Unfortunately the rest of you are going to have to wait for someone to pick us up for distro. Moving things through the website proved to be a little too much work for the small team that we'd put together to do it (i.e. me)

The kits and a brand spanking new press release are all headed to NYC, LA, Toronto, and other wonderful places where people have hammered us for press information on the film. I hope you'll start seeing snippets on TV--clips from the final cut of the film.

Once everything gets shipped I'm going to go back to the days of yore and try and return to filling you all in on the trials and tribulations of actually getting this project done.

If you're a distributor and you've go the hots for this project, lemme know, we're ready to go.

Like a Clock Ticking

The countdown is on. We haven't forgotten anyone or anything. The first 1,000 orders have started shipping, so if you're one of the lucky ones who purchased be prepared to receive something in time for the holiday season.

So what's the status so far?

We're working on putting the promotional kits together, and a bit of a mini press tour. Spread the news and let everyone know that they'll be seeing this film before the year is out.

A short note this time, but the next one will be chocked full o' juicy details; it's time to go back into the time machine and start spitting out more stories on how we got this far.

The final changes to the film have been compiled and they will be submitted to the studio this week. We just came off the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, so it's going to be short and hard working week to get everything submitted and pumping through the editing machine.

The beast has been asleep for a while, and we've been concentrating on thing things such as presskits, getting the marketing tour ready to roll, and interview schedules...it's been pretty busy to say the least.

The film looks great, and we're anxious for everyone to see it.

For those of you who were lucky enough to be one of the first 1,000 we've decided that those units will start shipping as part of the first manufacturing run, so you'll likely get yours just after the official release date.

Bump, bump bump...

After a lot of careful consideration we have come to realize that we're very close to completion of the production run, and completion of the film, but with everything that's been going on we've decided to hold the release date until December 1, 2007.

This will be the definitive release date, there are no more bumps in the night that will occur since we're right there. Everyone who's ordered an advanced copy will appreciate that we weren't completely happy with some of the special effects--yes there's special effects in the film--and there were a few minor things to fix in the tail end of the film.

We really want to get this right. So I hope you can stand the heat, and continue to wait it out. Everyone's patience is greatly appreciated and I know that it'll be worth the wait for everyone.

The work on the film is nearly 100% complete now. The picture is locked, the sound is complete; and we're almost ready to roll. We've sent the film back to post one last time for minor tweaks here and there, but nothing that would cause alarms or delays in the project's release.

I suspect that we're going to hit the October 1, 2007 release date. Packaging and art are being designed right now, but everything's moving along on schedule, and much to everyone's satisfaction.

We're all starting to breathe a little easier here these days.

Thanks to everyone who sent all the great encouraging words over the years we struggled to get this done--we're right on the finish line, and coming in fast.

The original targetted running time for the film--since we began this incarnation of editing--was 74 minutes, and I think we hit that. There is a 1h40m version of the film also with some additional yumminess, however due to missing footage we're not sure if it plays well. We're still deciding on which version would be most appropriate to release.

Also stay tuned on your TV Set: We've sent out press packages to all your favorite "movie / hollywood type" shows, and we've been asked for kits and footage by E! Entertainment & Entertainment Tonight Canada (I know)... So something other than what you can get in the Internet should be showing up pretty soon.

Oh The Glory That Be's!

Last night I was witness to the picture locked version of Universal Groove; now that was a site for sore eyes. Over 8 years in the making, and it's inches away from final cut.

The sound crew did a fantastic job on the film, and all the effects have really added a new dimension to the film. Watching the same thing over and over again for the past two years has made me biased to what the sound was like (I had to imagine everything) but last night was truly incredible. All the digital tracks have been laid down, the sountrack has been applied, and the s/fx have been piled on to make one hell of a film.

The running time of the picture locked version I saw yesterday was 1h40m, and I'm very happy to say that we're going to keep almost all of it.

The film is about as close as it can get to the original vision of what we set out to do in 1999, and all things considered I think it came out quite well. If the final cut stays near enough to the picture locked version I saw yesterday then you should expect a couple of surprises for the audience too.

UNIVERSAL GROOVE STARRING LOST BOY COREY HAIM RELEASING

July 29, 2007, Montreal, Canada -- Producers Francois Garcia, and Sandeep Panesar are elated to finally be releasing the Corey Haim film Universal Groove to the public at large this October 1, 2007.

The production, which completed principal photography in 1999, was plagued with horrific post-production problems from multiple editors, to a 2003 studio break in which robbed the production of critical footage needed to complete the film.

"We were at a loss for what to do next," says Francois Garcia, producer and director.

In 2005 footage from that robbery reached the Internet and served to further damage the producers' post-production efforts.

"Sadly we went through two editing teams to get to the one that we ended up with, " says Sandeep Panesar, producer and writer, "but the guys we ended up with really shone through for us."

By October 2006 the production was back on track, and move ever closer to completion. Panesar and Garcia worked relentlessly with the new post-production team to complete scenes that were damanged by the studio robbery, introduce a new storyline, and develop some visually stimulating sequences through the addition of critical CGI elements.

Over all the production has taken 8 1/4 years to complete from original draft to final release date. Ultimately this has been a wait longer than most anticpated.

"The fans in the end are the ones who have suffered," says Garcia, "and endured."

October 1, 2007 will mark the films release, however the producers following in the footsteps of their original idea to create an independent feature film are completing the distribution in the same manner. There is currently no commercial distributor attached to the film, and it will be released exclusively through the film's official web site at http://www.universalgroovemovie.com .

The site is home to an official blog penned by Panesar that chronicles the events over the last 8 years of production, proving to be a great read for the fans at the very least.

"Thankfully we were able to give something back to [the fans] to make it worth the wait." finishes Panesar.

In the end both Garcia and Panesar are pleased that the final product accurate represents the original vision, and now provides a retrospective look into the afterhours party scene that has changed since the film was originally shot.

In an attempt to guerrilla push the film on the Internet it is no coincidence that that Universal Groove begins presales through the official site on July 29, 2007--the date that Corey Haim's reality / comedy show The Two Coreys airs on A&E Networks.

the bad and the good of it all.

The Bad News:

No we're not done yet; it's still going to be a little while longer, so hold onto your hats.

Sadly since my last blogging on the film it's been 2 months; and in that 2 months our stall has unstuck itself. Naturally our "for sure" 2006 deadline wasn't met, however we did achieve a few things since that date:

1) Nice flashy web site up and running (www.universalgroovemovie.com)
2) Hammered out a nifty trailer should be surfacing in a three weeks
3) derailed our post-production
4) and gotten it back on track again...for the nth time.

Sometimes real-life just gets in the way of making a movie, and things slow down. We're not strangers to this by any means. I think the post-production process has completely petered out and died 5 or 6 times since the movie was actually shot.

The Good News:

The film is looking great. We're into final sound processing, the plans for selling the DVD are locked in, and we're zeroing in on the release date. Since we're so close to this years anniversary of original production we're shooting for July 2007.

At least the IMDB entry's been fixed up and finally properly reflects Universal Groove's (post-production) status.

The media kits are being prepped and we'll be releasing new digital images and stills from the film in the next three weeks, and then the trailer should arrive in style.

Licenses for music are still being signed, and a few outstanding contracts with other contributors are slowing down the post-production process, but it's really happening and it'll really be done very soon.

the trials and tribulations of independent film

Don't worry we haven't fallen off the face of the earth and slipped into limbo with the film, we're just plain late again--as I'm sure most of you out there already know that December 2006 "for sure" wasn't so for sure after all. Who could predict the wash of delay after delay we have experienced with this production.

We're now end of February and we've finally got our picture locked, and the majority of our music negotiated and signed. We experienced a little difficulty getting some wound work taken care of in december which could have easily completely destroyed the production, but now it's finally taken care of.

And now I have something to write about.

The film's gone into sound production; it looks a million times better than we could have ever hoped. The final production will likely run around 75 minutes, but it will tell the original story that we wanted told.

Sound work should take about another month or so, and then provided everything looks and sounds as good as it can we'll be done with the film, and we can start working on the release itself.

Stay tuned we'll be setting free the release date and more regular updates over the next few weeks. Once we've got a confirmation that everything's progressing we'll make offical the last drop dead release date to you.

The brand spanking new Universal Groove web site is now launched! For those of you who saw the old nasty site circa 2001 this should be a fresh and welcome change from what used to be up.

The site will give you a chance to read a little more about the film, check out production stills, download desktop wallpapers, and see trailers & videos.

In tandem with the launch of the new site we've opened up the pre-sales invitation area. We haven't started pre-selling the film yet, however we're collecting names of interested parties, and we'll notify you shortly. The initial pre-sales will be done in 2 lots of 500 by invitation only.

Once those units have cleared the film will be open to regular pre-sales through the web site.

rumour control 6.0- what's in a name?

I've been getting a flood of E-mails asking me to explain the origins of the name Universal Groove. Apart from being forced to come up with it through a series of legal threats the name actually does have a real meaning.

Have you ever been to a party, and closed in on the kitchen by the end of the night. Have you ever noticed that everyone closes in on that same location at that same party? Maybe it's not the kitchen, maybe it's a bedroom, or a living room, or another room in the house, but all party's end up there; It happens, trust me on this one...

So when you're there in that room be it kitchen, garage or bedroom, there is a moment--one single moment--when you can look around and feel it. That it is the moment when everyone and everything at that party is moving to an unheard rhythm, bouncing to an inconcieveable beat, moving on that thing that's indescribeable, but all in attendance are in tune...the party has hit its stride or its groove.

At that groove-u-lent moment when the party hits it, there are umpteen parties in the world simultaneously hitting their strides too. All hitting their grooves... These definingmoments in an party event come together in that ring that circles the planet where you and can be connected to everyone and everything else in that "groove" by tapping into the band known as the Universal Groove.

The Universal Groove is that ring that connects all parties in the groove; it is the mechanism that allows all people at all moments when in a particular stride, connect.

Tapping into the Universal Groove connects you to all other people around the world in that moment....You know when you're at a party and everything hits that groove...you're connected to all other parties at the moment, an that is the Universal Groove.

I just switched the blog over to the new blogger format; it seems ok so far. I can't say that I've noticed anything hugely different between it and the original format, however if you see anything out of the ordinary let me know right away and I'll get it fixed.

We completed the Universal Groove synopsis and for those of you who've been asking what the film is about here it is:

Universal Groove Synopsis

Universal Groove is an opportunity to step in the pre millennium underground party scene through the eyes of eight people who all tap into the Universal Groove-that moment when the party connects everyone to each other. Each character starts the night with a personal mission, but all leave the party slightly changed by their human interactions. The film uses the afterhours backdrop to draw eight characters together at one event--GROOVE. Each of the eight characters is pulled through a night of inspiration and escape through drugs through the release of all manner of frustration. Jim (Corey Haim) the director is struggling with writer's block; Eve (Anne Nahabedian) the painter needs inspiration; Beamer (Jordan Perlis), the stockbroker needs to get away from a hard day; Gina (Rami Yasin) the party fixture, needs human contact; Zed (Robert Rudman) the waiter needs a reason to let go of his pain; Candy (Kianha Daniels) and Kane (Marie-Eve Blackburn) the party girls are ready to go on a moments notice; and Push (Corey Besner) the dealer is there to help them all along their way.

Now I have to say that I've not really been reading the life is crap blog on a daily basis--or at all--but the fact that they take pot shots at Corey is amusing and makes me think that someone is reading it more often than I am...but there is at least one article that mentions me...which I think need some answers from earlier this year:

Now there's a couple of dirty things going on in the above statement / tirade / munging that aren't exactly correct...perhaps truthful, but not necessarily correct. The blog has well been updated since that date mentioned above, and guess what? I'm neither dead nor missing. I am however still living in a crack induced dream state which keeps me constantly awake, increasingly looking like Geddy Lee (and he looks like serious shit), and when I reach out the walls feel like I'm in either Videodrome or Existenz.

The movie is releasing. We're shooting for a date sometime this month (december 2006), and the film will be good.

And trust me I wouldn't be a Corey whore if my life depended on it. Not certain I could pimp him out even if I could get him to be my bitch, and the imagery is just plain wrong too.
