When Universal Studios Singapore opens in early 2010, fans of Universal and Disney theme parks in California and Florida will find a lot of familiar rides and attractions on the opening day visitors map.

Universal Studios Singapore opens on 14 February 2010

Universal Studios Singapore will open 5 pm to 9 pm every night from 14 Feb to 21 Feb. Visitors can purchase tickets, costing $10 each, and get dining and shopping vouchers of the same value. The park’s dining and retail outlets will be open for dinners/quick-bites and shopping.

Ticket sales start from 12.18pm Friday, 12 February, at the ticket booths outside Universal Studios Singapore.

Admissions will be limited to 3,000 guests a day to ensure guests get a good experience. Members of the public are discouraged from turning up for the tours without a pre-bought ticket.

Thinking of staying at one of the newly opened hotels at Singapore's first integrated resort (IR) anytime soon?

If you haven't booked a room at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) by now, you will likely have to wait until March at the earliest before you can take a vacation there. The IR revealed on its Facebook fan page last Friday that its four newly opened hotels 'have reached maximum capacity' until the end of April. Then, in an update posted on Saturday, it said that it had 'managed to free up some rooms' in the months of March and April.

This past weekend (Jan 23-24), RWS saw occupancy rates at its four hotels soar to over 90 per cent, said Robin Goh, assistant director for communications, adding that both the Festive Hotel and the Hard Rock Hotel Singapore reported full houses.

RWS expects to be operating at full or near-full capacity during weekends for the foreseeable future. Already, every room during a nine-day period spanning the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday from Feb 13 to Feb 21 has been snapped up by both Singaporeans and overseas guests eager to be among the first in the world to stay at the IR.

Last Wednesday, RWS celebrated the soft opening of four of its six hotels - Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Hotel Michael and the by-invitation-only Crockfords Tower. This was the first of several phased openings at the $6.59 billion development on the island.

Collectively, the four hotels offer 1,350 rooms and 10 restaurants. The other two hotels - Equarius Hotel and Spa Villas - will add another 500 rooms when they are launched as part of the second phase later this year.

When the IR's call centre first opened its hotline on Jan 11, the first three days alone saw some 5,000 room nights booked. RWS said last week that it expects six out of every 10 visitors to be from overseas, and of these, a quarter will come from China.

But there could be some hope yet for latecomers, said Mr Goh. 'As per industry practice, travel agents have what is known as 'agent allotments' of rooms. Hence, guests might be lucky to snag a room if there are some rooms still available under individual travel agents.'

His advice: Book rooms fast before demand surges as more attractions and entertainment options, including the casino and the Universal Studios Singapore theme park, open over the next few months.

Rack rates start from $400 a night for Festive Hotel, $450 for Hard Rock Hotel and $500 for Hotel Michael.

No fixed dates for opening of theme park, casino at Resorts World Sentosa

No date has been fixed for the opening of the Universal Studios Singapore theme park at Resorts World Sentosa.

Chairman of Resorts World Sentosa Lim Kok Thay made the clarification amid media reports that the theme park is scheduled to open by the end of next week.

Speaking at a news conference after the soft opening of four hotels at the integrated resort on Wednesday, Mr Lim also said it is not known yet when the casino will open as it awaits its operating licence from the authorities.

"After the opening today of Crockfords Tower, the rest of the facilities would follow suit from next week onwards," said Mr Lim. "Obviously that would include the Festive Walk, the Universal theme park, as well as the casino component."

Four of the six hotels at the integrated resort were opened to the public at 8.18am, an auspicious time.

They are Crockfords Tower, Hotel Michael, Festive Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel Singapore.

Even though Resorts World Sentosa has managed to open ahead of Marina Bay Sands, Mr Lim said it is not a race.

"(Competition to open first) would be foolish, which means that one may end up cutting corners," Mr Lim explained. "So, we've been single mindedly working on our own project and not having to look over our shoulders because we have a masterplan, we stuck by that and we just delivered on the timing that we promised the government. Although, it turned out to be somewhat earlier than we expected."

The convention centre at the integrated resort is also now open, and it has already received 33 bookings.

Some 6,400 staff are already on the payroll.

SOUTH-EAST Asia's first big-name theme park - Universal Studios Singapore - at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) looks set to open its doors next week, just a week after the resort welcomes visitors to its hotels and shops today.

Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, chairman of Genting Group, which owns the $6.59 billion resort, said yesterday: 'By the end of next week, Universal Studios Singapore will open, and when we officially launch Resorts World Sentosa later this year, it will be another significant and historical milestone achievement for the group.'

He was speaking at the Kuala Lumpur launch of the group's logo to mark its 45th anniversary.

Crockfords Tower - Crockfords Lounge

In the unofficial but cutthroat race to open Singapore's first integrated resort, Resorts World Sentosa will begin opening in stages from January 20, 2010, starting with its four hotels opening on the same day. It's a long-drawn tussle between the resort and Marina Bay Sands, which just announced that it is looking to open its casino resort at the end of March, but is facing delays due to rains, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It's the first shot in the IR salvo, and in a press statement that just smacks ever so slightly of gloating, chairman of the Genting Group and Resorts World Sentosa Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay said, 'We have been single-minded about the promise to deliver a true IR that will make Singapore and Singaporeans proud -- no distractions or excuses -- and today, we are happy to say we marked the first milestone towards delivering on that promise."

As to the opening of the Universal Studios Singapore theme park and more importantly, the casino license, no details are yet available but are in the process of approvals.

Resorts World Sentosa has began operations at two of its four hotels, celebrating with a lion dance and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The four hotels -- Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Crockfords Tower and Hotel Michael -- will offer a total of 1,350 rooms and 10 restaurant outlets at the opening, while another two hotels, Equarius Hotel and Spa Villas, will add another 500 rooms when they launch after 2010.

Festive Hotel

Special packages for hotel rooms at Resorts World Sentosa

Tour agents in Singapore are launching special packages for hotel stays at Resorts World Sentosa, which is slated to open on January 20.

Reservations for the hotel rooms at the integrated resort will open only on January 11 at 10am. However, the integrated resort said it has received hundreds of calls on its reservations hotline.

Travel agents said while they are targeting markets like the US and the UK, their main focus will be visitors from around the region - including Indonesia, Hong Kong and China.

Other travel agents said they are offering hotel stays at Resorts World as part of a regional tour package to places like Malaysia, Bintan and Batam.

Alicia Seah, senior vice-president, Marketing and PR, Commonwealth Travel Service, said: "We are expecting families, leisure travellers as well as business travellers, who are holding their incentive trips here in Singapore."

Moreover, those early birds who do not mind the fact that the casino will not be ready until late January will get 30 to 40 per cent off the travel deals.

Judy Lam, group vice-president, Sales & Marketing, Tour East, said: "The pre-opening packages can start from S$200 to S$300 for either a two-night package or a three nights' package. The actual opening packages would start from about S$500."

During the soft launch, room rates at Resorts World's three hotels - Hotel Michael, Festive Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel - are likely to range between S$400 per night for a regular deluxe room and S$3,000 for the presidential suite.

Pure Magic at Universal Studios Singapore

There’s something magical stirring in Universal Studios Singapore, in the land of Far Far Away. Inside a fantastical store called the Fairy Godmother Potion shop, Princess Fiona’s fairy godmother (if you remember her, she’s the rotund, bespectacled flying ‘witch’ in disguise who’s actually Charming’s mother) is bottling magical elixirs out of an enormous tank.

Step inside this store and you’ll find wooden beams, brick walls, huge doorways and Shrek characters welcoming you as you enter. The space is bound to draw you into the mystical world of Shrek, where fantastical characters come to life: donkeys shoot their mouths off and ogres are actually friendly.

I was awestruck when I saw the store, which is complete and has been fitted out. There are three things you can do there: there’s a retail shop for you to bring home your memories of the park, a counter where ‘potions’ aka fresh juices would be sold and a ferris-wheel kiddies can ride while their parents shop or get a breather. How awesome is that?

At the Fairy Godmother Potion Shop, you’ll find all things Shrek! Personally, I’m in love with Gingy, the gingerbread man but I absolutely love the huge variety of Shrek plush toys, character caps, photo frames and lots, lots more! (Note to fellow fans of Gingy, you HAVE TO look out for the stuffed confectionery character on the shelves, it’s simply a sweetheart! Get the pun?)

At the drinks stand (called Fairy Godmother’s Potion Factory) where fresh juices are served, the best thirst quenchers for anyone are served. Rejuvenating and healthy, the little ones would love it too. The most wondrous thing is that you can ‘brew’ any concoction you desire, and this is limited only by your imagination.

A youth 'elixir' made of beetroot, strawberry and apple juice -- let your imagination run wild as you come up with your own potions!

Last but not least, the Magic Potion Spin ride would delight the tykes who’re ever eager to hop on another attraction. Offering the rider a bird’s eye view of the hustle and bustle in the shop, the ferris wheel will allow its passengers a chance to catch the fun and whimsical atmosphere.

Honestly, words and pictures can’t capture the magic you will experience as you will be transported into another world when you set foot into the store. So I shan’t deliberate because I know you’ll come. You know you want to!

Queues at Universal Studio Singapore

WE know Singapore is one hot country. That, or it is raining. And cats and dogs at that.

So how have we prepared our guests for this, given that we know there will definitely be snaking queues as excited visitors throng the Universal Studios Singapore park once it is opened?

Look at the pictures themselves for an answer.

Guests can queue in relative comfort in the shade provided; coolers are used to keep temperatures down in queue lines as well. This is one of the queue areas in the Madagascar zone.

This picture was taken in on a hot Tuesday at midday, when our very hardworking workers get a break.

Of course there are outdoor attractions, such as our blockbuster Battlestar Galactica. However, guests can enjoy the airconditioning in the queue areas while they wait their turn before going on the world's tallest pair of dueling coasters.

Universal Studios Singapore has indoor attractions which are air-conditioned as well, and these include the Revenge of the Mummy, Shrek 4-D Adventure, as well as the madcap animals from Madagascar: A Crate Adventure, amongst several others, so seriously, we are very serious about you having serious fun while being kept comfortable and sheltered from the elements.

Most of the pedestrian areas in the resort and Universal Studios Singapore are covered with a special canopy, which cuts off the heat from the sun and reduces the temperature in the area below by three to five degrees celsius. We are also using eco-coolers, which use about 20 percent of the energy used by conventional air conditioners to keep temperatures down.

We have an eco-lagoon as well where underground storage tanks are used to collect and store rainfall for our lush landscapes, and which, while saving the earth and her resources, helps us save up to $160,000 in our water bills.

These are but some of the reasons why we got the BCA Green award this year for our efforts in being environmentally friendly.

Resorts World Sentosa today announced the ticket prices for passes to Universal Studios Singapore, which begins as attractively as S$32 for a senior-citizen day pass to S$118 for a two-day adult pass. Starting from a weekday rate of S$66 for an adult and S$48 for a child, a family of four could enjoy a full-day outing at Universal Studios Singapore for the equivalent of a buffet brunch at an upscale hotel (see Annex A for rates).

Packed with 24 attractions, 18 of them new or adapted for Singapore, visitors to Universal Studios Singapore will be the first to try out many blockbuster theme park rides. The theme park boasts a collection of many world firsts: the world’s biggest single collection of DreamWorks Animation attractions; the world’s first Far Far Away Castle from the world of Shrek; the world’s first Madagascar theme park ride; the world’s tallest dueling roller coaster Battlestar Galactica, the world’s first Sci-Fi zone, and more.

For just one ticket charge, visitors will also get to enjoy non-stop live entertainment that takes them back to seven thematic worlds, as well as 30 theme restaurants and food carts and 20 theme retail stores and kiosks – all within the park to dine and shop from.

Resorts World Sentosa, Asia’s largest family holiday destination, will open early next year with Universal Studios Singapore, four hotels, a casino and a host of shopping, dining and entertainment offerings. Its all-suite boutique Crockfords Hotel accepts by-invitation guests only, but deluxe room rates for its three other hotels start from S$400 at Festive Hotel, S$450 at Hard Rock Hotel, and S$500 at Hotel Michael.

So many things have been happening on the Resorts World Sentosa front, as we move towards Opening Day.

Testing of some of the attractions in Universal Studios Singapore has already commenced, and if you take a trip to Sentosa Island, you will be able to see for yourselves the changes which have taken place.

Of course, those of you who have been following our progress via our website, Facebook and Twitter updates will know that we are trying our darnest to make this Integrated Resort the best in the world, to offer visitors A Million Moments, in just One World.

As our other bloggers have posted, we are still in the midst of recruitment, to get the best for the resort.
