FISU representatives have visited the representatives of the Organisational Committee of the 26th Winter Universiade on March 31st 2011. Mr. Roger Roth – CTI Chair, Mr. Dejan Susovic - Media and Communication Director/Head of TV Productions and Mr. Milan Augustin – Director WU have me the President of OC 2013 Tone Vogrinec, Games Management Director Srečko Vilar and Sports Director Srečko Medven. Some important issues about technical points were discussed and finalised and the FISU representatives have visited some locations for sports venues. FISU representatives have agreed on the sports programme for the 2013 Winter Universiade which will be presented in May in Lausanne. They have also discussed about media, website and TV production and Media and Communication Director/Head of TV Productions, Mr. Dejan Susovic highlighted all necessary tasks and areas to be covered. He explained the overall process that FISU expects from the OC of the 2013 Winter Universiade. All issues and details will be discussed during a meeting with Slovenian TV.

Closing ceremony

Yesterday evening, the 25th Winter Universiade came to an end as the games were closed with a splendid Closing Ceremony which took place in the Cemal Gürsel Stadium.

After playing the national anthem of Turkey, the flags of all participating countries arrived in the stadium under big cheers from the spectators. Then the participants walked in all together, mixing the countries sending out the message of world unity.

Time for the closing speeches of the authorities as the President of the Organizing Committee was followed by the speech of FISU President Killian.

Then the FISU anthem ‘Gaudeamus Igitur’ was played while the FISU flag was lowered and the Universiade flame was extinguished.

As it was time to hand over the FISU flag to the next organizer, the Erzurum Mayor handed the flag back to FISU President Killian, who handed it over the delegate of the Organizing Committee of the 2013 Winter Universiade which will be hosted in Maribor, Slovenia. The Slovenian delegation then gave a short performance inviting the participants to their country for the next games.

The Closing Ceremony ended with a spectacular cultural performance.

Alpine skier Filip Mlinšek won two medals

Alpine skier Filip Mlinšek won silver medal in slalom and bronze in combination on

the last day of the Winter Universiade.

"Today's slalom race was really good and what is most important, I managed two solid slalom runs. Slalom is a discipline where you cannot predict the outcome. This time, all was in its proper place for me. It wasn’t enough for gold, but it was enough for silver," Mlinšek said after the race and added:" I am going home very happy because I knew that I was able to ski good in both runs, but I had to manage that on the race, which I finally succeeded today."

Less luck had freestyle snowboarders in slope style, where we had good competitors (Urška Pribošič, Žiga Erlač, Žiga Rakovec and Mitja Kodrič). Due to bad weather and strong winds, today’s race was unfortunately canceled.

Slovenia has a total of 8 medals at the Universiade. The leader in medal count is Russia with 39 medals, followed by South Korea on the second place and Ukraine on the third.

Last night was a reception for the delegates of the participating countries at the Palan Hotel, held by the President of the organizing committee of the Universiade 2013 in Maribor Mr. Tone Vogrinec, the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia in Ankara, dr. Milan jazbec and the vice mayor of the Municipality of Maribor mag. Tomaž Kancler.

At the reception th,e Director of the company Univerziada 2013, Mr. Srečko Vilar, Director general of the Sport Directorate at the Ministry of Education and Sport, Mr. Marko Rajšter and Mr. Darko Repenšek, Head of Development and Investments Sector at the Ministry of Education and Sport, were also present.

As Slovenia is hosting the next Winter Universiade practically all delegations were present at the reception. The Slovenian ambassador in Turkey, dr. Milan Jazbec welcomed them and handed gifts for medal winners to the representative of the Slovenian, then Tone Vogrinec congratulated and complimented Turkish organizers and invited them to Maribor in 2013. Vice Mayor of the City of Maribor, mag. Tomaž Kancler and Mr. Srečko Vilar have handed a gift to the President of the International University Sports Federation, George E. Killian - a book about Pohorje.

In today’s closing ceremony the official handover of the flag, from the hands of the Turkish organizers to the representatives of Universiade Maribor 2013, will take place.

Head of our delegation in Erzurum and President of the organizing committee Maribor 2013, Mr. Tone Vogrinec evaluated the 25th WU and stated: “It is impossible to follow Turkey. I have many experiences in winter sports but your organization and venues are better than ours.”

Tone Vogrinec stated that Erzurum is better than Slovenia in terms of its population and venuen, and continued: “The goverment supports Erzurum amazingly. We cannot get the same level in terms of the venues. Our goverment support is not as huge as yours. “ Vogrinec expressed that he loved Türk Telekom Jumping Towers and Erzurum Stadium most and added: “The venues are at the city center. Especially, the jumping towers are outstanding. In Maribor, the jumping towers are 1 hour away from the city center.” Vogirnec stressed that Erzurum took an huge step by organizing 25th WU and continued: “Organizing olympics is a difficult process. All of the candidate countries are very competitive. Erzurum can host olympics, theorically. Winter Games will provide an important experience to Turkey.”

Today was a race in ski cross at the 25 Winter Universiade in Erzurum. Slovenian skiers, who also compete in the World cup, Matej Adorjan and Simon Jecl represented Slovenia. Adorjan ended the race on excellent 5th place and Jecl was 19th. Manuel Eicher from Switzerland won gold.

Freestyle snowboarders Urška Pribošič, Žiga Rakovec, Žiga Erlač and Mitja Kodrič had a training today in the slope style, tomorrow they will compete in the race.

Tomorrow is the last day of the Winter Universiade in Turkey and Slovenian athletes will also compete in alpine skiing, in men’s slalom.

Slovenian ski jumpers won silver medal on yesterday’s team race on the K95. They were just 0.6 points behind first place. Japanese team won gold and bronze went to the Poles. For Slovenia Žiga Mandl, Rok Mandl and Matej Dobovšek have competed. Of the six medals that Slovenia got on the 25th Winter Universiade, five have won ski jumpers. The Slovenian ski jumpers return home tomorrow.

Only Žiga Rakovec will start tomorrow in the snowboarder’s half pipe final. Žiga Erlača, Mitja Kodrič and Urška Pribošič didn’t make to the finals, but we expect more from them in the slope-style, which is their primary discipline.

Slovenian ice figure skaters, Daša Grm and Nika Cerič competed in the short program. Nika Cerič had some bad luck and was 21st at the end with 33.93 points. Coach Marina Pirkmajer said: "I am happy with Nika’s preformance and I am very sorry that she made a mistake in the element, which she usually masters. This is however a very good experience for her because it is her first time on such a big competition and is the youngest participant." Daša Grm was on excellent 12th place with 43.54 points.

Today, delegations of the Organizing Committees of the 2013 and 2015 Winter Universiades (Maribor and Granada) as well as one of the bidding candidates for 2017, Trentino, visited the Athletes’ Village as part of the FISU WU Observer program.

Guided by CSU Vice-Chair Leonz Eder and SU Director Marc Vandenplas, who supervises the Village, the delegates visited the different parts of the wonderful Erzurum Athletes’ Village: the accreditation center, the restaurant, the medical center and a typical room for the athletes.

Until the end of the Games the Future OC delegates will visit the venues to have a clear idea of the magnitude of the Winter Universiade.

Slovenian hockey team ended on 9th place

Competitors in half pipe final were excellent

Slovenian student hockey team ended their performances at the Winter Universiade. Today they have defeated Spain with 8:0 and have ended the tournament on the 9th place. Given the difficult group (Belarus, South Korea and Canada) in which they competed, it is a good result.

Skiers in ski cross, Matej Adorjan and Simon Jecl were 7th and 11th in the qualifications today and will race in tomorrow’s finals.

Alpine men skiers have competed in the giant slalom in Konakli, which is 17 km away from the center of Erzurum. Start of the giant slalom was at 2600 meters above sea level and finish at 2340 m. Our skiers have ended the race on places between 16 and 32. Watch the race here.

In Palandoken freestyle finals took place in the discipline of snowboard half pipe, where Žiga Rakovec ended as 13th, Japanese Ryo Aono won. Žiga said, the competition was fierce, since some competitors at the Universiade have already won in the Wold cup. However, we are looking forward for tomorrow's snowboards slope-style, where we expect a good result.

Slovenian figure skaters Daša Grm and Nika Cerič have ended their performances at the Universiade. In free skating, Daša Grm was 10th and Nika Cerič 22nd. Overall, Daša was on 9th position and Nika remained 22nd.

Today Slovenian ski jumpers will compete in the team race on the K95. Ski jumpers have competed excellent so far and have won two gold and two bronze medals.

In short program in figure skating, Daša Grm and Nika Cerič will begin with qualifications today.

The qualifications will also begin in the snowboarding half pipe, where junior vice-world champion Urška Pribošič, Žiga Erlač, Žiga Rakovec and Mitja Kodrič will represent Slovenia.

On Friday Matej Adorjan and Simon Jecl will start in the ski-cross qualifications.

Hockey team won against Turkey

Slovenian hockey players against Turkey

Slovenian hockey team won against Turkey with 11:1. They will compete on Friday for 9th place.

Today at the 25th Winter Universiade is so to say, a Slovenian day. On the evening the team competition in ski jumping will take place, where the Slovenes are considered as favorites, because they have won four medals so far.

A delegation from the Ministry of Education and Sports, led by Mr Marko Rajšter and representatives of the municipality of Maribor, led by vice mayor mag. Tomaž Kancler have arrived today to Erzurum.

The Universiade in Erzurum with 57 participating countries is slowly coming to the end. There are only 3 days of competitions remaining and the closing ceremony on Sunday.

Gloria Kotnik won bronze in snowboard PGS

Slovenian athletes at the Universiade in Erzurum won their fifth medal. Snowboarder Gloria Kotnik won bronze medal in the parallel giant slalom. Gloria started the race ill, but showed a great amount of fighting spirit and ended the race on the podium. Snowboarder Jure Hafner had the best time in the qualifications, but won ninth place at the end while Tim Mastnak was just behind the medals, on excellent fourth place.

Hockey players have played an attractive game against Belarus and scored 1:0 in the second third, but they had to acknowledge the superiority of their opponents, who triumphed with 5:1.

Slovenia has so far five medals at the Winter Universiade and is currently on the ninth place among 57 participating countries. Russia currently leads. You can follow the medal count here.

Erzurum is hosting WU 2011

At the end of the week a delegation from the city of Maribor will travel to the closing ceremony and the final part of the Universiade in Erzurum. The delegation will be led by the Vice Mayor, mag. Tomaž Kancler and the president of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Tone Vogrinec. They will take the Universiade flag on the closing ceremony on behalf of Slovenia and Maribor. The ceremonial is exactly prescribed and is similar to the one on the Olympic Games. At the end of the closing ceremony, the flag of the Universiade is lowered and the representatives of the next Universiade take the flag by a solemn way. According to the information from Erzurum, the stadium for the closing ceremony is completely sold out and 25000 spectators will watch the event live. The organizers of the Universiade in Erzurum are grandly flirting with the idea, that they could even announce the candidature to organize Winter Olympic Games in the future.

First medals for Slovenian athletes in the winter Universiade in Erzurum

Slovenian student athletes have won their first gold at this year's Winter Universiade. Matej Dobovšek has won gold on the K125, his achievement was 143, 5 m which is also the record of the ski jump. Interestingly, complete ski jumping centre in Erzurum is a result of Slovenian constructors and is ranked among the most modern in the world. The success was rounded with a bronze medal from Rok Mandelj, who achieved 139 m.

Maja Vtič was just behind the medal winners on the K95, but still on an excellent, but ungrateful fourth place. The successes of sport jumpers have rounded the snowboarders. Snowboarder Rok Rogelj finished the snowboard cross as 5th and Aljoša Stefanovič finished as 10th. The first victory for the hockey team was a high one- they have defeated South Korea with 10:2.

Opening ceremony of the 25th Winter Universiade in Erzurum

The opening ceremony of the 25th Winter Universiade 2011 was considered as a fascinating event in the general view, at the level of the openings of the biggest sporting spectacles, the Olympics and world championships. The main theme of the performance was Anatolian Civilization and the outstanding personalities and features of the Anatolian Culture. The show was a multimedia spectacle, with lightshows, fireworks, dance and musical acts. At the opening ceremony the highest representatives of the Turkish state were present and more than 3000 athletes, officials and team members of 57 participating countries. 25.000 spectators attended the opening ceremony, costing 5 million Euros. The Slovenian athletes took part in the parade of teams. It is interesting that Slovenian athletes have also carried, beside the Slovenian national flag, the flag of the Winter Universiade in Maribor 2013.

In hotel Arena in Maribor a press conference was held before the departure of Slovenian athletes to the 25th winter universiade in Erzurum, Turkey. Slovene colors will be represented by 55 student athletes who will compete in eight of the eleven disciplines. 22 members of staff will accompany the athletes to the event and one referee. There a several reasons for a press conference in Maribor but the most important is that Maribor –together with Ruše and Zreče – is the organizer of the next Universiade in 2013. The most athletes in the expedition are represented by the hockey players, led by Murajica Pajić, the trainer of a Maribor hockey club.

The expedition to Erzurum in led by the professor Peter Sitar and Mr. Andrej Pišl. President of the organizing committee of the Universiade Maribor 2013, Mr. Tone Vogrinec has pointed to the important fact, that the Slovenian event takes place directly after Erzurum where Universiade is a national project of the highest level. The Turks have invested around 500 million Euros in the Universiade, which in their case, is a development project of the decade. In our case the investments will be minimal, but we can match with the Turkish organizers in the quality of the organization of the sports events, was determined Vogrinec.

Dr. Kugovnik, the President of FISU has once again warned, before the departure to Erzurum, that Slovenia would have to change its attitude towards the university sport and to the Universiade as well. It is certainly a developmental opportunity that is underestimated by too far many in Slovenia.

FISU 1st CTI Meeting Winter Universiade Maribor 2013

On October, 7th and 8th the city of Maribor is hosting a wide, 16-member delegation of the International University Sports Federation FISU from Bruxelles. Guests from Europe, Asia and America will be monitoring the Universiade 2013 preparations' progress in Maribor, Ruše and Zreče with the help of organisers.

Slovene and foregin representatives of all 11 disciplines performed at the event are going to share their experience at hotel Habakuk.

The FISU delegation is led by Roger Roth (SUI) – the president of FISU, accompanied by vice-president Robert Phillip (CAN) and Milan Augustin (SVK) – the FISU Winter Universiade manager.

The Slovene delegation is led by Tone Vogrinec, the president of the Universiade 2013 Organisation Committee and his co-workers.

Guests are also going to visit all the scenes, where the events will take place - Mariborsko, Ruško and Zreško Pohorje as well as Ljudski vrt, the Lukna hall, RTS, RTV Centre and the University Clinical Center Maribor.

The organisers are planning a press conference, which will take place after the debates.

Slovenian University Sports Association presented the organisation structure of the Universiade 2013, anticipated investments and other project-related expenses at today's press conference, held at the National Assembly. The representatives of SUSA and local communities have presented the project yesterday to the new Minister of Education and Sport, dr. Igor Luksic.

The sources of financing are divided between state budget, local budgets and organisers activities. The sources for road and communal infrastructure are guaranteed from the local and state finances, while most of other funds will be drawn from private investments and European funds.

About Slovenia!

Slovenia (the Republic of Slovenia) is one of the smallest countries in Europe. It is strategically located in the center of Europe, bordered by Italy on the West, Austria to the North, Hungary to the Northeast and Croatia to the South. Therefore, we can say that it lies in the heart of Europe where the Alps and the Mediterranean meet the Pannonian plains and the mysterious Karst. According to the last census, a little over two million people live here on just twenty thousand square kilometres.

Despite its size, Slovenian landscape is very diverse: Julian Alps are in the Northwest Slovenia, there are many wonderful caves in the Karst region, Slovenia also has a portion of coastline: Adriatic sea costal areas lie in the Southwest corner; there are Pannonian plains in the Northeastern part while a versatile landscape of hills, valleys, rivers and forests which cover half of the country dominate its countryside. Limestone formations provide Slovenia with the unique geographical phenomena “Kras” (the Karst), with over 1,000 underground caves, vanishing rivers and even vanishing lakes.

The highest mountain Triglav – the name meaning “three – headed” is 2,864 m high. Triglav is a state symbol, also used on the Slovenian coat of arms and on the flag. Another interesting feature about Slovenia is its shape – many believe the country’s outline resembles that of a chicken. From wherever you arrive, Slovenia is only an arm’s length away. There is only 230 kilometres to the Slovene border from Vienna, 240 kilometres from Budapest, and 350 kilometres from Venice. Slovenia is well linked to the world by road, rail, air, and sea.

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia. It is situated 269.5 m above sea level, its coordinates are 15°39’12” E longitude and 46°33’39” N latitude. It is the business, university, cultural and sports centre of the north-eastern part of Slovenia. It is located by the river Drava, at the point of contact of five different regional units: the Drava valley, important for traffic and energy; the Pohorje hill range with livestock-rearing and tourism; the forests and farms of Kozjak; Slovenske gorice with its vineyards and orchards, and the arable Drava plain.

In almost a thousand year history of the city, Maribor has experienced its up and downs. It gained town rights in the 13th century, and in the late Middle Ages the town had to shelter itself with strong walls to ward off the Turkish army. The remains are still well preserved in Lent, the old part of the town, which lies by the river.

Modern Maribor is metropolitan city with university, diocesan seat, museums, concert and congress centres, shops, a famous park, sports and recreational facilities, etc. It is thus trying to develop high quality tourism. This relies primarily on the delicious cuisine and wine, and the well-preserved city core which reflects the images of centuries.

For most of the year, Maribor enjoys a pleasant Pannonian climate. Winters tend to be cold, spring comes early. Summers are hot, and autumns quite warm. The yearly rainfall averages 1,055 mm; it mostly rains in May, June, and July. Maribor offers many pleasant, sunny days; on average we get some 266 sunny days per year.

The Drava was formerly not so quiet and meek as it seems today, but a great deal more torrential and full of rocks. Rafts and punts were tied up at the Landing stage at Maribor, which is even nowadays still called Lent. The Lent, after being neglected for a couple of decades, has again come to life. The area by the water breathes with the city, draws people to the banks of the Drava and again, spontaneously and imperceptibly, just as the Drava flows, has become the heart and soul of the city.

Maribor is the centre of south Štajerska agriculture and viticulture, which produces the highest quality white wine sorts. Kalvarija, a hill which protects the city from the north wind, is mantled in grape vines which literally sprout from the city, including stara trta. This is believed to be the oldest vine in the world, which has been growing for more than 400 years and is certified in the Guinness Book of Records. It is now a tourist attraction, located on the banks of Drava in the old, renovated part of the town. In every direction, vine-covered hills spread from the very city, dotted with farmsteads at which guests can taste pure authentic home cooking and the best wines that the Maribor wine-growing district has to offer.

Maribor is proud of the numerous cultural, entertainment and sporting events with international participation: ZLATA LISICA (skiing), LENT FESTIVAL (culture), BORŠTNIK MEETING (theatre), NAŠA PESEM (singing), etc. which attract an increasing number of tourists to the city.

Sport Facilities

The existing sports infrastructure in Slovenia already enables a smooth organisation of the winter universiade. To follow the main goal of the universiades - the development of the academic culture - the university city of Maribor, where international academic community has the perfect conditions to achieve this goal, is proposed.

Maribor has proved itself with top quality expert organisation teams and the required sports infrastructure. In addition to that, the construction and the reconstruction of some sports facilites is already in progress.

Although Pohorje already has proper ski courses for all the disciplines in the Alpine Skiing, the construction of new slopes, which will be used for downhill and super-G races, is planned. The same is with tracks for Cross Country and Biathlon, which will be constructed in the foot of the Ski Centre Pohorje. A new Ski Jumping Centre with a normal and a large hill, a new half-pipe for snowboarding and another Ice Hall will be built in Maribor by 2010.

A welcomed novelty at the universiade will definitely be the night events in alpine skiing, cross country and snowboarding.

We would like to stress that 90% of all the slopes on the Pohorje are already equipped with 70 artificial snow guns with a capacity of 3,000 m3 of snow per hour. Until 2011, all the slopes will be 100% covered with more than 100 snow guns.

Pohorje, where most of the competitions will take place, lies at the foot of the Maribor. It is located only 3 km from the city centre, and can be easily reached. Travel time by shuttle bus is approximately 5 minutes.
