In December 1986 the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT) was formally renamed Curtin University of Technology, taking its name from the influential and widely-revered former Prime Minister of Australia, John Curtin.

Remembered as a true statesman, Curtin held office during World War II from 1941-1945, when he died in office only six weeks before the Japanese surrender. He led Australia through some of its darkest years with resolute tenacity and will be remembered by Australians, regardless of their political leanings, as one of the country's greatest leaders.

Introduction.

University Library Australia is a national borrowing scheme that allows all staff and students of all Australian universities to borrow in person from any other interstate university in Australia. The scheme is a cooperative arrangement between CAUL

member libraries.

ULA is a national scheme which complements existing regional borrowing schemes and is simple to use for both the borrower and the library staff. It aims for:

Procedures that minimise effort at home and host libraries

A free service to users (other than fees charged as penalties)

Home libraries indemnifying host libraries against problems

Service use recorded to assist future planning.

It is recommended that the guiding principles of this scheme, the vision of a free, open, simple national scheme, be considered by members of remaining regional borrowing schemes when reviewing local operations.

Host libraries retain the right to set local conditions of access, and local fees.

Potential users should check the FAQ for Borrowers to verify eligibility, host access conditions and registration conditions.

Eligibility.

All students and staff from AVCC member universities. This will include inter alia:

a. distance education students

b. students based at remote campuses ie at a campus of a university whose main campus is in another state or another metropolitan area

ULA is not intended to supplant the home institution as the primary supplier of information resources. If there is evidence that the home institution is persistently under-supporting its students, the host institution may take this up at CAUL level.

Eligibility will be as wide as possible, until proven that it is unsustainable.

All universities should note the ACRL guidelines for services to distance education students.

Authentication/Evidence.

For students.

A photo ID and proof of current enrolment.

For staff.

A photo ID and proof of current employment/affiliation.

Both are needed to establish that the borrower is the person eligible to participate in the scheme. Affiliation eg visiting scholars, must be approved by the home university library; academic affiliation is not sufficient given that it is the library that is carrying the indemnity.

In some states, TAFE members of universities may be indistinguishable from the tertiary members. This is acknowledged but not considered to have any remarkable bearing on the program.

Libraries which issue cards will be responsible for the person who holds it.

BA in Liberal Arts

The uniqueness of the BA program lies in the comparative teaching of international perspectives, the Core Curriculum and Learning Clusters and an emphasis on language, art, and culture.

Core Curriculum is a series of two sequential courses taken by all students, focusing on a range of issues related to such SUA values as peace, human rights and the creative co-existence of nature and humanity.

Learning Clusters are research seminars designed to bridge theory and practice in the investigation of a specific question, and to elicit in the way of a specific product, an educated outcome or response. Students work in teams with one or more faculty facilitators to propose, research and model constructive approaches to local, regional and/or global issues.

All SUA students concentrate on a foreign language and culture. All students participate in a semester of study abroad during their junior year.

MA in Second and Foreign Language Education

The MA program stresses knowledge in and understanding of linguistics, teaching and learning processes and cross-cultural awareness. It provides future teachers with a curriculum that balances a sound theoretical foundation with the practical tools necessary to teach a foreign language to a non-native speaker.

The program strives to provide an academic setting that nurtures men and women from a variety of cultures and national backgrounds, who seek to learn from shared experiences. It also strives to develop critical thinking and learning and to foster a value for life long learning. To this end the program emphasizes small class sizes that cultivate a close and informal relationship among the teachers and students, rigorous academic endeavors, free and open dialogue, and an appreciation for human diversity, especially linguistic and cultural diversity.

The alumni of the graduate program currently live in more than 20 countries, mostly teaching in the field of language education (e.g.: teaching English and/or Japanese.) Some are also working in other fields utilizing their expertise in language and education (e.g.: textbook publishing, translation, public relations.)

Harvard University, which celebrated its 350th anniversary in 1986, is the
oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Founded 16 years
