All right now, right off the bat: Does anyone remember the Sheridan play?

It was, among other things, a broadly witty send-up of the empty, misdirected, decadent and elitist attitudes of our blue-blooded betters. I say "our" figuratively, meaning all of us who don't have hereditary titles and diapers monogrammed with a crest and some really mean looking birds. I suppose you could say "our" literally if you are a 200-and-something-year-old working-class Cockney.

So anyway, for no better reason than the words "school" and "scandal" going together so nicely, and having a show-off-ish reference to an 18th century English play, you're through six sentences and nearly three paragraphs before you find out what so upsets me as to require such an elaborate warm-up: it's the government schools.

They're a scandal.

One size fits all?
Now let's agree up front that the only honest term for these sorry institutions is government schools or state schools; public schools, although it does claim the advantage of reminding one of public restrooms, seems to imply that the public at large actually has some influence on how affairs are conducted at these places or, as in a public restroom, can enter and exit freely. That would be a knee-slapper if it weren't a tear-jerker.

Fact is, so-called public schools are run by, well, the government! Of course, owing to the political realities of 21st century America, the state is in league with the unions, scores of them, as they cooperate in the micromanagement of our children's lives. Certainly there are many, many dedicated teachers and administrators (probably a few too many of the latter, frankly) who try to do their best for their schools and their charges. But isn't it quite clear, after fifty years of manic progressive education, that large chunks of several generations of students have exited the graduation ceremony with diplomas they could not read?

Dumb by design
And how could it not be by design? I don't mean to suggest a scheme from an episode of the "X-Files"; I do mean to suggest that not all of the experimentation done in the name of John Dewey to American schoolchildren in this century has had the aim of making them better informed and more critical thinkers. The mass dumbing-down of the last 50 years can't be blamed on Stalinist cliques and zealous cadres, however.

The movers and shakers in that long-term undertaking were intensely ideological individuals working through associations, conferences and both formal and informal networks. With like-thinking social engineers working in the schools, the teachers' colleges, the unions, the legislature and the media, we got cultural warfare long before we got the term for it.

This isn't crazy right-wing thinking anymore. In fact, come to think of it, since the fall of the Soviet Union a whole lot of things that used to be crazy right-wing thinking aren't crazy or even necessarily right-wing anymore. Like Alger Hiss being guilty. And the Rosenbergs. And the infiltration of Hollywood and the U.S. government through the 1930s, '40s and 50's (and...?). And, sadly, the Tuskegee experiments. The MK-Ultra programs. Waco and Ruby Ridge.

Here's a bumper sticker for you: CONSPIRACIES HAPPEN. I'm not a pack animal, so I don't subscribe to any single group's unified field theory of world domination, like the "insiders," the history of the hidden hand, the so-called protocols of some old robed conspirators, etc., etc. Neither do I discount everything these people have to say. (Don't many of us wonder about Korean Air Line Flight 007? And TWA 800? And then there's always Roswell for the folks who don't care about evidence at all.) Can't we simply agree that there will always be people around who are up to no good?

School choice
Over the past century, education has become a monstrous assault on the children of America. No more proof is needed that better educations are had at private schools, particularly faith-based ones. The verdict on education has been in for some time. But the vast power and resources of the federal and state governments, plus those of the teachers' unions, are arrayed against parents who fight in larger and larger numbers for choice in their children's education.

When schools are attended by willing students; when parents are full partners with teachers and administrators; when the marketplace inevitably supplies various kinds of institutions (religious, atheist, college-preparatory, trade-oriented, left-wing, right-wing and hot wing) for various constituencies (make that customers); when the one-size-fits-all mentality of the manic progressive educrats is consigned to the same dust bin that had plenty of room for that wasted old 74-year-old USSR, well, then the parents of this country can reclaim half the deed to their kids' minds and hearts.

Located in an enclave of Dallas, Texas Southern Methodist University (commonly referred to as SMU) has a rich history on its University Park campus where the institution was first established in 1911. A private college founded by and still affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church the school has a population of about 11,000 with about 55% of those enrolled being undergraduates. Despite a charter date of April 11, 1911 administrative issues kept the first class from starting until 1915.
The genesis for the Methodist Church becoming interested in the new university being discussed for the Dallas area was a direct result of a 1914 Tennessee Supreme Court ruling which revoked church authority from influencing the southern private school of Vanderbilt University (located in Nashville, Tennessee). After suffering a court ordered defeat in Tennessee the church shifted its attention to the formation of a Methodist university in Dallas while also investing resources into Emory University in the Atlanta, Georgia area.The creation of modern day SMU was a direct result of earlier failed attempts to transplant neighboring university Southwestern University to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. In the early twentieth century when then Southwestern University president Robert Hyer was unsuccessful in moving the school he presided over from Georgetown, Texas to Dallas (the two cities are about 170 miles apart) he resigned from his position at Southwestern and spearheaded the effort to start a new university that would eventually become Southern Methodist University.
Despite failed efforts to move Southwestern University the school and its new rival to the north SMU remained on good terms with one another as they frequently competed in athletic contests and shared upper level administrators. The once friendly rivalry petered out when Southwestern went through a reorganization that transformed the school into a small liberal arts college.Dallas Hall was the name given to the first official building on the SMU campus. The name Dallas Hall is in recognition of the $300,000 (a sizable sum in the early 1900s) that citizens of Dallas donated to lock in the location for the brand new university. Dallas Hall remains the centerpiece of the SMU landscape even to this day. The first building stands proudly as a symbol of the community's willingness to take on personal sacrifice in an effort to bring education and culture to their community.
Robert Hyer, former Southwestern University president, became the first president of Southern Methodist University and one of his first notable acts as president was to select the school colors that are still flown to this day. The main campus at the University of Louisville is known as the Belknap Campus. While the University of Louisville (also commonly referred to as U of L) is a 20,000 student public institution of higher learning that was established in 1798 the main campus of today was not acquired until sometime later in 1923.Whereas many colleges and universities share names with the states they reside in the University of Louisville is part of a much smaller subset that takes its name from the city the school is housed in. While there are a handful of universities with titles tied to the cities these schools are connected to most are private institutions.The University of Louisville has the noteworthy honor of being the first instance of a public university in America being city owned. The historic nature of U of L goes far beyond the conditions surrounding its formation and contains such claims as the first US emergency room,first ambulance service for non-military personnel, and one of the first blood banks in America.
The U of L facilities as they currently exist are divided into three campuses which are known as the Belknap Campus (main campus), Health Sciences Campus (medical campus), and Shelby Campus (currently the night school campus). While each campus contributes to the unique cultural landscape of the university the focus of this article will be contained to discussion of the main campus or Belknap Campus.If a U of L student asks someone to meet them on campus the odds on favorite spot for that rendezvous is the Belknap Campus where a majority of the academic colleges are housed. The main campus that was interestingly once the spot of an orphanage (many original buildings from the orphanage still stand) is about three miles south of the downtown area of Louisville. Over the past fifteen years projects have consistently been underway to develop and expand the area around the Belknap Campus. This process has predominately been facilitated by the university purchasing land surrounding the main campus with much of that area being made up of abandoned factories.
During the recent expansion the 56,000 seat Papa John's Cardinal Stadium was built for the football team at a cost of $63 million. Additional notable projects resulting from the expansion of the Belknap Campus include the Jim Patterson Stadium (2,500 seat - $10 million cost) which hosts University of Louisville baseball games, the building of the Trager Center field house, new track facility, soccer fields, a tennis center, and new student housing that includes Minardi Hall, Kurz Hall, and the Bettie Johnson Apartments.Rounding out the cultural fair of the Belknap Campus area are museums and similar points of interest. The Hite Art Institute and Rauch Planetarium are popular on campus spots as is the equally popular Speed Art Museum (amongst the biggest and oldest art museums in Kentucky) which is located right off campus and receives 180,000 guests a year.As time passes the University of Louisville continues to evolve from its humble eighteenth century beginnings. As recently as 2008 85 additional acres off the Belknap Campus were purchased with preliminary plans earmarking the land for student housing, parking, and conversion of historical buildings for practical modern use. With each passing year a group of University of Louisville students say goodbye to the Belknap Campus and a new batch of wide eyed freshmen arrive to the spot where they will form lifetime lasting memories.

Ohio University Southern Campus is located in Ironton, Ohio and is a four-year public university that offers both Associate's and Bachelor's degrees. For those students who are seeking a degree in equine studies, OU Southern offers an Associate's in Applied Science Degree in Equine Studies. This program has been developed to provide students with the knowledge and skills that are required to have a long and successful career as a trained professional in the equine industry.Students who successfully complete the degree will have an appreciation and understanding of the horse through courses in anatomy and physiology and through participating in the psychological process of working hands on with horses. Students will also know how to care for, feed, and maintain a horse so that it will be able to reach its highest potential. Besides learning about the horse itself, students will learn the legal and ethical issues that the equine industry faces on a daily basis. Students will also be introduced to the business aspect of the equine industry along with the training side. Students will also learn good communication skills that are needed to succeed in the equine industry today.The Equine Studies Program is broken into four different parts with the first section being devoted to equine science and health. The courses in this section of the program are taught by a veterinarian with years of equine experience and include classes in nutrition, reproduction, anatomy and physiology, first aid, and preventative medicine. The second section of the program is devoted to the business portion of the equine industry and is designed to promote the understanding of the financial and physical aspects of the horse industry. The third portion of the program is devoted to riding and training horses. Students will take riding classes in three different seats: western seat, hunt seat, and saddle seat. The last portion of the curriculum is devoted to field experience and internships. These are essential to give the students a realist view of a career that involves horses.Graduates of this program will have many different career options to choose from and students will be able to select different elective courses to enhance their knowledge in the field of study that they choose to pursue. Graduates will be able to find employment in a number of fields including:

Students who are accepted to the equine studies program can apply for scholarships and state and federal aid to assist with the expenses that are associated with attending college.The Ohio Horse Park is a center of learning for both students and the public.
