Regular University and College Admission Requirements

For students who were educated in a country where English is NOT the official language, you must meet ONE of the following criteria:

Students must submit valid and official test results from TOEFL,TOEIC, IELTS or Cambridge or any other widely accepted language testing authority with the minimum score of: TOEFL 500 PBT, 185 CBT, 74-76 iBT, TOEIC 775, IELTS overall score of 5.0, Cambridge CAE or CPC band 5.5,

OR take the ESL in Canada English Language Placement test and score a minimum of 65,

OR successful completion of CLB level Nine of an accredited ESL program,

OR successful completion of an accredited language school International School Year or foundations year pathways program,

OR transcript of a full time, one year of post secondary education, English as the only medium of instruction with a mark of at least 75% or B grade.

Students can send copies of their English language studies for a preliminary assessment. If your English is below the test requirements ESL in Canada offers an academic preparation program to bring students up to the level necessary for college and university admission.

Toronto Academic Preparation Programs and Schedules for 2010

January & February - 200 hours, five hour a day program
March & April - 200 hours, five hour a day program
May & June - 200 hours, five hour a day program
July & August - 200 hours, five hour a day program
September & October - 200 hours, five hour a day program
November & December - 200 hours, five hour a day program

The Academic Preparation Programs are designed for students interested in professional education and careers in business administration, IT, computers, health, engineering, technology and energy in the English-speaking North American community. The curriculum employs English Language skills training, grammar instruction, communication techniques, in an environment of professional interaction and stimulating work-related activities.

Upgrading Teaching Qualifications in Ontario Canada

Ongoing professional learning is an integral part of public school teaching. The teaching profession’s standards reflect the expectation that all public school teachers will participate in ongoing learning. Adding to professional knowledge enhances teaching practices, which improves student learning.

The regulated system of Additional Basic Qualifications (ABQs) and Additional Qualifications (AQs) is one form of professional learning. ABQs/AQs are set out in legislation, accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers, offered by providers approved by the College and, when successfully completed, recorded on the teacher's Certificate of Qualification.

Some providers are approved to offer courses from specific schedules:

Schedule A Additional Basic Qualification courses and Schedule B Additional Basic Qualification courses in Technological Education may be offered by faculties/schools of education.

Schedule C one-session Additional Qualification courses and Schedule D three-session Additional Qualification courses may be offered by all providers approved by the College.

Schedule E one-session Honours Specialist courses may be offered by faculties or schools of education.

Principals’ Qualification Program (PQP)
and
Supervisory Officers’ Qualification Program (SOQP).

Accredited course providers may choose to offer none, some or all of the courses that have been accredited in any particular session. The university may deliver a course face-to-face, online or in a combination of formats, in accordance with the submission that has been accredited by the College.

Use CELPIP for UBC University Admission in Canada

Before admission to the University of British Columbia, international students must demonstrate competence in the English language, regardless of their country of origin or citizenship status.

One of the ways to demonstrate competence is to achieve a minimum of 4L in the CELPIT-A, CELL, and CELTOP. Some University of British Columbia individual faculties require higher levels for example, entry into first-year English courses, a minimum of 5 is required on the CELPIT-A.

CELPIP is the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program.

Developed at the University of British Columbia (UBC), CELPIP is a complete set of computer-delivered English language proficiency tests used to assess an individual’s functional skills in English for listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Test-General CEPIT-G assesses proficiency levels of general reading and writing skills. The test consists of five parts based on everyday general reading and writing tasks.

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Test-Academic CELPIT-A assesses proficiency of beginning college or university-level reading and writing. The test consists of four subtests: sentence structure, reading comprehension, English usage, and essay writing.

The Canadian English Language Listening Test CELL assesses proficiency levels of functional listening skills. This test requires examinees to choose responses to pre-recorded questions based on statements, questions, short dialogues, and longer conversations.

The Canadian English Language Test of Oral Proficiency CELTOP assesses the proficiency level of oral communication skills. Examinees respond to pre-recorded questions based on everyday situations, tabular or graphic material, news reports, telephone messages, and conversations.
