Dear Alumni Members

It is with great sadness that we share that Ang Hean Leng, UMAA President (2017-2019), has passed away on 22 December 2019.

Despite his illness, Hean Leng continued to play an active role in building up UMAA, and was instrumental in laying a solid foundation for UMAA's 30th Anniversary celebration. His generosity in giving to his alma mater and to the association has left a deep impact, and he will be sorely missed.

Should any alumni wish to pay respects, details of the wake are as follows:

Venue:

3, Jalan Tijani 1/B, Taman Tijani Ukay, Ampang 68000 Selangor

Prayers will be held on 22 and 23 December evening

University of Melbourne and Malaysian research collaboration: Trials promise good news for countries with dengue and Zika virus

noreply@blogger.com (University of Melbourne Alumni Association of Malaysia) — Sat, 23 Nov 2019 10:50:00 +0000

"An international team of scientists have reported an effective and environmentally sustainable way to block the transmission of mosquito-borne dengue virus, in trials carried out in Malaysia.

Using a strain of the bacteria Wolbachia, which inhibit mosquitoes from transmitting viruses to humans, researchers at the Universities of Melbourne and Glasgow and the Institute for Medical Research in Malaysia were able to successfully reduce cases of dengue at sites in Kuala Lumpur.

Professor Hoffmann, from Melbourne University’s Bio21 Institute, said the findings could make a difference to a number of countries who have dengue.

“This study provides us with a new Wolbachia strain for field release and highlights disease impact within a complex urban setting where dengue incidence rates are high,” he said. “The intervention succeeded despite ongoing pesticide applications and other challenges that can make it hard for the Wolbachia to become established. The approach holds promise not only in Malaysia but also in other countries.”

Each year there are around 90 million symptomatic cases of dengue, with severe disease in around 1 per cent of cases, including life-threatening haemorrhage or shock syndrome. In Malaysia alone, over 100,000 dengue cases were reported in 2016, with an annual cost estimated at $US175 million."

BE-150 Kuala Lumpur Alumni Gathering

noreply@blogger.com (University of Melbourne Alumni Association of Malaysia) — Wed, 26 Jun 2019 03:09:00 +0000

This June Professor Julie Willis, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, travelled to Kuala Lumpur to join Malaysian graduates in an alumni gathering.

The event saw 60 Architecture, Building and Planning alumni and Engineering alumni from across Malaysia gather together at the Hotel Majestic where they caught up with old friends, met new ones and connected with peers across the built environments and engineering industries.

This year’s visit to Malaysia was particularly significant as 2019 marks 150 years of built environment education at the University of Melbourne. This milestone is being celebrated in a year-long program titled BE-150, with one of the key aspirations of the program being to create opportunities to engage with our community – our students, the practitioners working in our professions, our staff, our alumni, our industry partners and the broader public.

The program aims to create instances for meaningful interaction and forming new connections, and this most recent Kuala Lumpur alumni celebration was the perfect example of what the BE 150 aims to achieve: a diverse alumni community coming together to meet, mingle and exchange thoughts on the current and future state of our professions.

Julie opened the celebration by highlighting the longstanding relationship between the Faculty and Malaysia. The first students from Malaysia to study with ABP arrived in the 1950s. In 2019, we have 150 Malaysian students studying across the Faculty’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs. With over 800 Malaysian alumni in total, the cohort is one of our largest, and Malaysian graduates are responsible for dramatically shaping the urban forms, practices and even skylines of a number of cities.

The celebration also welcomed guest speaker Yvonne Leong, a former director of BEP Akitek, one of Malaysia’s most successful architecture firms. Yvonne spoke of the strong link between BEP Akitek and our Faculty; Mr Kington Loo, one of Malaysia’s most successful architects and former Partner of BEP, was also one of our faculty’s first two Malaysian graduates who obtained their degrees in 1954.

Mr Loo’s contribution to the architectural community of Malaysia has been significant, and Yvonne highlighted many of his key projects including the Subang Airport (1962 – 1965), recounting how part way through the project the government revealed the approved cost had to be reduced by 30%, while the project deadline remained the same. This was a challenge that Loo and his team rose to by reducing the structural grid from 60’x60’ to 48’x48’, as well as revising the extent of air-conditioned spaces. To save on time, the construction contract was separated into packages, namely site works, substructure and superstructure. The project was a success, with Subang airport serving as KL’s main airport until 1998.

This story encapsulates the drive, ingenuity and commitment shared by our alumni, and it was heartening to see these qualities celebrated at the gathering.

BEP Akitek will also be celebrating a significant milestone in the not too distant future, with the 100-year anniversary of their firm’s establishment coming up in 2020. A book detailing the firm’s work over the last 100 years will be released to coincide with this significant anniversary, with the Faculty’s very own Professor Philip Goad, eminent architectural historian, set to write the introduction.

The Faculty is honoured to have this longstanding and ongoing association with Malaysia through our alumni and looks forward to returning in the near future.

Global Management Consulting: Davira Chairunnisa in Kuala Lumpur

noreply@blogger.com (University of Melbourne Alumni Association of Malaysia) — Fri, 05 Apr 2019 08:55:00 +0000

Davira Chairunnisa travelled to Kuala Lumpur on the Global Management Consulting (GMC) subject in the Bachelor of Commerce.

She worked in a student group to complete a project for Linfox Malaysia in November 2018.

‘Stepping out of our comfort zone is the best way to grow.’

This statement reflects my experience of two weeks spent working in an overseas country, with different backgrounds and cultures. With so many lessons learnt, and knowledge gained, enrolling in GMC was one of the best decisions I’ve made at University so far! In-company experience I was honoured to consult for Linfox Malaysia together with my team to evaluate Linfox's fleet utilisation based on analysis of their key customers. The project was challenging for our team due to the unfamiliarity of the logistics industry, yet we valued our time working at Linfox.

On my team’s first day, we had a tour of the office and were introduced to Linfox employees. Everyone was friendly and welcomed us warmly to the office. After this, the country manager explained our project and communicated his expectations to the team.

As part of the project requirements, we were required to visit external customer sites. The site visits allowed my team to view the supply-chain segment in operation, which gave us an additional perspective on the industry. It also turned out to be a highlight for me because our team did some qualitative research onsite, allowing us to have a discussion with Linfox personnel. I enjoyed this most as I love meeting and communicating with new people.

Conducting site visits

My team had to depart at 5.00am one morning to conduct interviews with truck drivers and the sole scheduler from Linfox. When conducting site visits, we were amazed by the seamless integration between Linfox’s drivers, schedulers and customers, where each of them were proficient in their roles and ran an efficient operation process.

I enjoyed hearing about driver experiences in their current occupation. The information was helpful for our project, but on a personal level their diligence inspired me to appreciate everything I have. The drivers worked long hours to provide for their families and I saw the importance of family to them. These external site visits affected me deeply and I will never forget them.

Skills gained

I learnt how crucial teamwork and effective communication were in producing results. My team set our objectives at the beginning of the project and allotted ourselves individual daily tasks. Furthermore, communication between the team and our client was well maintained. By applying these skills during the project, we were able to generate productivity and work efficiently. In the end, it was a pleasure for us to present our findings and recommendations which were received well by our client.

Outside work

Besides working at Linfox on my project, I made new friends. We went out for dinner at restaurants offering delicious and inexpensive food. My roommate and I visited markets in the area surrounding KL since we both love shopping. Our hotel was amazing! Located near the central area of KL gave us easy access to shopping malls, restaurants, and supermarkets. Our hotel also offered one of the best roti canais I’ve ever tasted, which was included each day for breakfast.

What’s next?

My team is currently working on our final report which will be submitted to Linfox. As team members are from different countries, we are communicating remotely over the summer period. Having an opportunity to apply my knowledge in a real-life industry made GMC a remarkable experience. I learnt that in consulting, I would have to quickly adapt and respond to unexpected circumstances. Whilst challenging, this is a valuable lesson for my future career. Lastly, I feel inspired to become a better person.
