May God bless and protect you!

We are truly blessed with wonderful friends, community, colleagues and family. All of us are united in a war we must wage every day, one we must not surrender to: the fight against cancer. How amazing is it to see how dramatically our lives can change in a day, an hour, a minute. No one ever forgets the moment they hear the words, “You have cancer.” We believe it renews our resolve to make the most of each moment and remember kindness to our fellow human beings.

We applaud and celebrate the survivors who give us constant hope. We pray for those fighting for their lives and their strength. We remember those we have lost. We must continue to raise funds until we find a cure for this dreaded disease–we will win this battle–treatment and results improve every day! We must never give up, no matter how hard the battle is that we must fight, sometimes just one hour at a time.

With your help, the ‘From the Hearts of the Hanney’s Campaign’ was able to present Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with $11,270.00, totaling $191,561.00 in funds raised to fight this disease over the course of the thirteen years we have been devoted to honoring Sam Rugoff and Gerry & Elizabeth Hanney, and so many others.

We are proud to live in a country where this type of fundraiser is possible. We are proud of our friends, our family, our colleagues, our community, our pets–all who have helped make this possible, even if it meant a financial sacrifice for the greater good–regardless of the economy. Strive for the words, “You are cured!” Thank you so much for doing the right thing and continuing to – - save a life today!

Our love,

John & Iris & the Three P’s!

His involvement in mass digitization as a means of preserving library books goes back over a decade. Wilkin received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant in 1997 to digitize the “Middle English Dictionary” and make it accessible online. In 1999, he received an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant for the digitization of 7,500 19th-century monographs published in the U.S.

This work poised Wilkin to lead HathiTrust when it began about a decade later. In his role as executive director, he successfully guided HathiTrust’s defense when the Authors Guild sued HathiTrust and a handful of its partner libraries. (The guild has filed an appeal.)

At the national level, John Price Wilkin has served on committees for the Association of Research Libraries, as well as the Research Libraries Group and the Online Computer Library Center.

Our hearts and prayers are with the bombing victims at the Boston Marathon and Boston’s first responders as they quickly took action to ensure the safety of everyone there and get the wounded to treatment.

If you are in Boston or know someone at the marathon, Google has put together Person Finder: Boston Marathon Explosions to to help families and friends reconnect.

The American Red Cross has put together a similar service and issued the following statement:

Our hearts go out to all those in Boston dealing with this tragedy and our thoughts are with all of those injured.

The Red Cross has sent more than 100 additional blood products to several Boston area hospitals to help meet patient needs. Thanks to the generosity of volunteer blood donors, there is currently enough blood on the shelves to meet demand. People can call 1-800-RED CROSS or go to redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment to give blood in the days and weeks ahead.

Right now, many people are concerned about loved ones in Boston, and it is important for people to connect with one another. People in Boston who have access to a computer can go to redcross.org/safeandwell to list themselves as safe or they can text or call a family member and ask to be registered on the site. Please note that due to high volume, the Safe and Well site is experiencing slow page loads at this time. Please be patient and continue to check back.

Over the next few hours, the Red Cross will be working in close coordination with officials to determine how we can best help the community and support emergency workers.

Many Red Cross volunteers and workers were on the marathon course, as they are every year to support the runners. Communication in the area is difficult and we are working right now to reconnect with those workers.

Each year John and I do a very in depth review of our lives, our hopes, our beliefs, our blessings and our goals. Never in all our years together have either of us ever failed to believe that our primary purpose on earth is to help others — to help save a life today! We try to live in the spirit of giving back to our community and helping our world be a better place because we do believe, from our hearts, that one human being, with God’s help, can make a difference.

It is in that spirit of giving that once again we come to you and ask that you participate with us in helping to save a life. This year we are taking a different direction and our fundraising will be to support Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Through all the changing faces of our world and life challenges, one thing never changes: CANCER KILLS!!!! — every day, every minute, every family! We must not lose our resolve to fight the dreaded enemy: cancer, we must eliminate this disease! Each year we honor Iris’s dad, Sam Rugoff; we honor John’s mom and dad, Elizabeth and Gerry Hanney; we honor our dear friends who we have lost, and, almost more importantly, we honor the survivors, and those fighting the good fight for survival. The survivors are the folks who prove that we are beating the enemy. Hope, unity, diminished suffering, and triumphing, for the many survivors must be the driving force!!!! Every dollar you give will make a difference to the people whose lives are touched by cancer.

Hopefully, we all get the message. It is impossible to wake up each day and not remember the devastation we have felt when we heard that cancer had touched our lives, our family’s lives, our friends’ lives, even our pets’ lives. It is impossible to not want to fight this disease with every ounce of strength we have so that we can watch future generations celebrate nothing but recovery. We truly are coming closer, each and every day, to winning the fight. But it’s also true that we can’t do it without your help.

Today, we know that there is hope, and that death is no longer a certainty. We know that millions of brave men and women all over the world are fighting and surviving cancer. Research has come light years, and continues to advance daily. All of us have a vital role to play in this fight; we must raise funds so that some day when we hear the diagnosis — cancer — it is no worse than a cold. We will survive!

The Hanneys are fortunate to have had a successful and healthy year. Therefore, for the first $2,500.00 you donate John and Iris will match your contribution. We are also proud to own a company that recognizes its civic obligation to give back to the community. Unlimited Priorities LLC will donate $2,500.00 in addition to the funds we raise.

Please make your check payable to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Please mail your checks by April 30th so that we can get the money to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in time for their 2013 Annual Fund Drive. All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed. The pledge form, and a stamped self-addressed envelope is enclosed – please fill it out so that we can send you a thank you, a receipt and the results of our fund-raiser. If you would prefer to donate online the link is: http://unlimitedpriorities.com/donate/

University of North Carolina Student Attends Winter Meeting

Cape Coral, FL, February 1, 2013 — The board of directors of the Robert F. Asleson Memorial ALA Conference Grant has announced this year’s award recipient. Nicole Lehotsky, a student at the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science, has received a $1,500.00 grant to help defray the cost of attending ALA’s 2013 Winter Meeting in Seattle, Washington in January.

The Robert F. Asleson Memorial ALA Conference Grant was established by friends and colleagues within the information industry to honor the memory of Bob Asleson, late founder and president of The Redalen Group, for his many contributions to the library community. An advisor and guide to countless members of the profession, Bob’s 50-year career spanned both traditional and innovative technologies, from reference materials to CD-ROMs to online databases. He held presidential positions at several leading industry companies and served on numerous organization boards. The grant’s awards subsidize attendance at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting and the Annual Conference for deserving Master of Library Science degree candidates. Winners are selected based on economic need and the quality of an essay based on criteria set by the board.

Scheduled to graduate in May, 2013, Nicole Lehotsky is pursuing an MLS degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Balancing opportunities for growth with the reality of her pocketbook, during the last year and a half she has supported her full-time studies through a combination of student loans and part-time positions in s variety of libraries including public, special and currently health sciences.

Responding to the news that she was to receive this year’s award Nicole said: “I would like to thank the committee at the Robert F. Asleson Memorial ALA Conference Grant for selecting me to receive this award. I am very much looking forward to the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. I believe this to be an extremely valuable opportunity for my professional development and growth, especially as I near my graduation date and begin to attend events that speak to my development and growth as a professional rather than as just a student.”

In awarding the grant Iris Hanney, Chairman of the Board of Directors, said, “I know that Bob Asleson would have enthusiastically supported Nicole’s well thought out presentation defending the university library as a value asset for its clientele in view of today’s economic climate. I am proud to present this award to Nicole in Bob’s memory and to wish her the best in her new career in library science.”

The board of directors continues to seek both corporate and individual donations in support of the Robert F. Asleson Memorial ALA Conference Grant. It believes that exposure to the programs, seminars, contacts and other conference benefits will foster an on-going love of and dedication to the cause of librarianship in students who otherwise would be unable to attend, reflecting the values exhibited by Bob Asleson throughout his life and long professional career.

Complete details of the grant, including information on donation participation, are available on the website at www.aslesongrant.org. Several levels of support are available, and all donations are fully tax-deductible. Additional information may be obtained by contacting:

The availability of free computers and internet access now rivals book lending and reference expertise as a vital service of libraries. In a national survey of Americans ages 16 and older:

80% of Americans say borrowing books is a “very important” service libraries provide.

80% say reference librarians are a “very important” service of libraries.

77% say free access to computers and the internet is a “very important” service of libraries.
