The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM), through its Careers Advisory Service (CAS), has formalised a partnership with L’Oréal Malaysia, marking a new milestone in our ongoing effort to prepare students for the future of work.

This partnership, established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reflects a shared commitment to developing young talent through real-world exposure, skill-building, and meaningful career opportunities with a global leader in the beauty and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry.

Building Pathways for Career Growth

The MoU was signed by Tomas Hruska, Managing Director of L’Oréal Malaysia-Singapore, and Patrick Joseph, Registrar of the University of Nottingham Malaysia. Also present were Prof. Hazel Melanie Ramos, Vice Provost (Teaching and Learning); Jag Singh, Director of Student Recruitment and Marketing; and Alicia Ch’ng, Head of Careers Advisory Service.

Through this partnership, UNM students will gain access to L’Oréal’s flagship talent development programmes, including the Youth Trendsetters Ambassador Programme and the IGNITE Internship Programme. These initiatives provide students with valuable insights into corporate culture, innovation, and sustainable business practices that will help them transition confidently into their future careers.

A Partnership Rooted in Shared Vision

CAS has long collaborated with L’Oréal through events and initiatives such as the L’Oréal Brandstorm competition, an annual global challenge that encourages innovation and creative problem-solving among university students. The signing of this MoU formalises and strengthens this relationship, reinforcing CAS’s commitment to working with leading employers who share our dedication to nurturing future-ready graduates.

According to Alicia Ch’ng, Head of Careers Advisory Service, “This collaboration reflects our ongoing mission to prepare students for dynamic global careers. By partnering with L’Oréal, we are giving students access to first-hand industry exposure and the professional networks they need to succeed.”

Empowering Students Beyond the Classroom

In conjunction with the signing ceremony, students also participated in an Upskilling Session co-organised with WomenGirls, a non-profit organisation that advocates for gender equality and empowerment. The session, supported by L’Oréal, brought together more than 80 students, including participants from UNM and other universities, to explore strategies for building confidence, leadership, and career resilience among underrepresented talent.

This collaboration demonstrates how industry partnerships can extend beyond career opportunities by creating a positive social impact and fostering inclusive growth.

This MoU represents more than just a partnership. It is a platform for empowering UNM students to become future leaders in a rapidly evolving global industry.

What really happens behind the recruitment process? How do employers decide who stands out?

These were some of the questions the UNM Careers Advisory Service (CAS) team explored during a knowledge-sharing session with the CIMB team in July. The visit turned out to be a truly eye-opening experience, giving us a closer look at how one of Malaysia’s leading banks identifies and develops talent.

Throughout the session, CIMB recruiters shared valuable insights into what makes a strong candidate, how they assess fit, and what qualities help graduates thrive in a competitive environment. Hearing these perspectives directly from industry professionals helped us better understand what employers look for beyond academic qualifications.

It was also a great opportunity for our team to reflect on how we can translate these insights into practical guidance for students. From preparing stronger resumes to developing employability skills, every takeaway from the session contributes to our mission of helping students become confident and career-ready.

To bridge the education and industry, the Careers Advisory Service partnered with Shell Malaysia to host a dynamic Case Study Workshop, offering students a valuable simulation of an actual assessment centre experience. Held at H1B13 and HB14, the half-day event welcomed 26 students who were grouped into teams to tackle a pressing and relevant industry challenge, identifying the potential for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Malaysia.

The session began with a short briefing, followed by group discussions and presentations. Each team had 20 minutes to pitch their proposals—an exercise designed to enhance their ability to think critically under pressure, solve complex problems, and communicate effectively as a group. Students were encouraged to bring their own devices for on-the-spot collaboration and slide preparation.

Facilitating the session were representatives from Shell, including:

• Daniel Boey, Energy Engineer

• Hidayah, Contracting & Procurement Lead

They were joined by additional Shell facilitators who acted as mentors and panel judges throughout the day. Students received real-time feedback and were observed for their performance, simulating a real-world evaluation setting similar to Shell’s Graduate Programme assessment centres.

The workshop also featured a sharing session with Shell employees, including alumni of the Shell Graduate Programme, who offered personal insights into the industry and Shell’s career development opportunities. This session helped students understand how the skills they practised during the workshop aligned with real-world job expectations.

By the end of the session, students walked away with sharpened skills in critical thinking, teamwork, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving, along with a clearer understanding of how to prepare for future career assessments. For many, the workshop was more than a competition; it was a stepping stone towards becoming industry-ready graduates.

The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) Careers and Internship Fair 2025 #UNMCIF25, organised by UNM Careers Advisory Service (CAS), wrapped up successfully, bringing students and employers together for two days of networking and career-building opportunities on 25 to 26 February. Held at the Student Lounge and Activity Room, the fair provided a welcoming space for students to connect with potential employers and explore future career paths.

The fair was officially opened by UNM Provost, Prof. David FitzPatrick, alongside Registrar Patrick Joseph, Director of Student Experience Mavis Tsang, and Head of Careers Advisory Service  Alicia Ch’ng. The Nottingham Dance Club (NDC) added a fun touch to the opening with a lively performance, setting a positive and engaging tone for the event.

More than 50 companies participated, giving students a chance to learn about different industries, explore job and internship opportunities, and gain insights directly from recruiters. From multinational corporations to growing startups, a wide range of employers were present, offering something for everyone.

In addition to meeting employers, students took part in activities aimed at helping them prepare for the job market:

• CV reviews: Career experts from AdoreSys, Forvis Mazars, JobStreet, and Shopee provided one-on-one feedback to help students improve their resumes.
• On-campus interviews: Companies such as Accenture, Biocon Biologics, Huawei, Intel, PEC SE Asia, Schneider Electric, and Y&L Metal conducted interviews on the spot, giving students a chance to land internships and job offers.
• Industry talks: Employers from Biocon Biologics, bp, NV5, Huawei, MayAir Group, and Sunway Group shared insights on career opportunities and industry trends.
• Professional LinkedIn photoshoot: Students took advantage of free professional headshots to enhance their online profiles.

Additionally, the CAS booth was a key support resource, providing guidance, career-related materials, and expert advice throughout the event.

The strong participation and engagement from students and employers highlighted the significance of #UNMCIF25. The event served as a stepping stone for students looking to build meaningful connections, gain industry knowledge, and take the next steps in their career journeys.

In 2024, the UNM Resume Competition celebrated its 8th anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to fostering the art and importance of effective resume writing. Held from 7 to 26 October, the 2024 competition drew over 200 remarkable submissions across four categories: Foundation students, Year 1 & 2 students, Year 3 & 4 students, and Postgraduates.

The competition has grown significantly over the years, becoming a cornerstone of career development at UNM. By encouraging students to refine their resume-writing skills, this initiative empowers them to present their unique stories, skills, and aspirations to potential employers with confidence and clarity.

On September 4th, the Careers Advisory Service (CAS) threw a special CAS Open House just for the newest Foundation student intake. We know how exciting (and perhaps a little overwhelming) it can be to start this new chapter, so we designed this event to introduce students to the support they will have access to throughout their time at the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM).

It was not just about info overload—we turned career planning into a fun, interactive experience! Instead, students participated in a creative scavenger hunt-style activity, where they moved through a series of checkpoints designed to introduce key services and resources available through CAS. What a ride it’s been! The Careerfluencer 23/24 term has officially come to a close, and we couldn’t be prouder of our amazing Careerfluencers for making the student experience not just better but a whole lot more fun.

One of the event highlights for Careerfluencer this year was the Careerfluencer Appreciation Lunch and Focus Group. This event was not just about showing our gratitude—it was an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the Careerfluencers over the past year. The CAS team deeply appreciated the thoughtful insights shared during the focus group, which will help shape future initiatives, while sharing some good laughs. These casual conversations, paired with thoughtful feedback, served as a reminder of how important student voices are in shaping the career services we offer. The feedback from our Careerfluencers was pure gold!

The Careerfluencer initiative was launched in September 2024 with a clear purpose – to bridge the gap between CAS and the UNM student population. Our mission was simple: to raise awareness of the services and support CAS offers through offline and online approaches while fostering a stronger sense of belonging across campus. This initiative was not just a step towards building greater student engagement—it is a core part of CAS’s strategy to support the university’s broader mission of enhancing the student experience.

Through events like the CAS Roadshow, career events, and lecture bashes, Careerfluencers boosted CAS’s visibility; with Careerfluencers acting as relatable, approachable peers who were able to engage with students on a personal level, demystifying the services CAS offers. Their work didn’t stop there! They also played a key role in social media growth, creating fun reels and sharing ideas that increased engagement with CAS’s services.
