I remember going to see my favorite band in NYC after they banned smoking and it was so great. It was really much more enjoyable. I could actually see them clearer on stage. I'm not kidding. It was crazy. It was nice going home not stinking like smoke too. Sounded better too hahaha - kidding 

I'm pretty sure the reason for the bans is for the benefit of the people that have to work in bars, restaurants, etc.

+1 to this. It was like a revelation, suddenly going out was enjoyable! At least over here the ban is to benefit bar/club/restaurant workers' health, and has been very effective. Since smoking has zero positive effects and also negatively effects the health of involuntary passive smokers I have no sympathy for smokers' complaints about being harassed/stigmatised.
