Here is one for my monday-mood...!

A total of 15 or so hours on a train almost drove me mad this weekend, but it was worth it to see porcupine tree live for the second time! Perfect show, just perfect. Inspiring... :occasion14:

Title; I don't like mondays either!

Gear used;

- Monday
- Morning
- Eyesight (blurry)
- Hands (shaking)
- Brain (emergency power)
- 3 cups of coffee, 150% strength (did not help the shaking of the hands, but improved vision significantly)
- Snus (kind of chewing tobacco, except you don't chew it:P crazy scandinavians....) - did also not help the shaking of the hands, but improved mood significantly!
- Some guitar-stuff I could never fit into a song
- Warmoth VIP > POD X3 Live > Presonus Firepod > Reaper

This is a clip I recorded with my youngest son who is playing the drums. I did not know the song but they asked me to come in and just �go off� and do a lead solo. So I showed up, listened to the song once and had at it. They pointed at me when to start and when to stop, which explains the somewhat abrupt ending to the solo. This was the first take raw and un-mixed.

The guitar was my 1993 Gibson Les Paul Classic Premium Plus with Duncan 59�s direct into an Uncle Spot 59 Tweed Deluxe copy turned up to 10. The amp had SM57�s placed in the front of the speaker and at the back of the cabinet and I just went off. It�s pretty raw but was fun to do some stuff with my kid and his friends.

This is a little riff thing that I find myself playing a lot. So I decided to record so i'll stop playing it. :laughing7: It turned into a kind of classic metal sounding thing. That's not really what I thought of when I played it, but that's what happened when I did the drums and bass. It's the first thing I've done with the Tonelab LE. I think I need to tweak it some more. It's got a lot more treble than I'm used to. I used my Warmoth LP for most of it. The solo noise at the end is my strat. Sorry that it's 10 seconds over. I have trouble doing stuff shorter than 2 minutes. :icon_tongue:

With respect to Steve Karl, I have loads of stuff recorded over the last 18 years but think it should be a new clip not a section of something older (although I did edit down some killer clips :glasses9: ). Happy for a ruling from dbw... :dontknow:
I've gone for a new recording and I'll nominate it for tone ('cos it certainly isn't difficult to play!). Very different to my usual metal stuff (e.g. on my website :icon_biggrin:).

When I got finished and compiled the track it came up at 1 minute and 10 secs, oooops and oh well. I ain't starting over. :toothy11: But, if it becomes a real issue, I'll cut the arpeggio off the beginning. :icon_thumright:

First things first: My sincerest apologies to the bass players on the board, I'm not one and just played what I thought fit.
And I don't own a bass guitar. :help: But I think the Les Paul covered it pretty well. :occasion14:

Wanted to do something cool and laid back, but builds as it goes along. Everything was planned out and played with a purpose. Except for the last solo, I wanted to have some fun with it. So I just said to hell with it and went for broke, raw and in your face. :icon_thumright:

Oh what I could have done with more than one minute!!!! :toothy11:

Notes:
All guitars and bass are single tracked with the exception of the lead lines @ 48-58 sec, they were triple tracked and blended/panned to give that section an "airy" quality.
All clean tracks used the EMG 85 pup
All hi-gain rhythm tracks used the EMG 81 pup
Solo/lead lines and pup used: EMG 85 @ 26-41 sec and 59-1.10 sec, EMG 81 used 42-58 sec.
Bass guitar tracks used the EMG 85 pup
Bass guitar tracks start at 16 seconds in
Guitar volume and tone controls at full on for all tracks

[b]I turned off the EQ on Windows Media Player during test plays and had everything pretty much set flat when I was recording and mixing this down. So if you run a normal V-shaped EQ you may want to adjust it as needed, or to your personal taste and preference. [/b] :icon_tongue:

Ok - some recording done quick and to the pointless just for you....

Clean is simply that. No amplification, pod bypassed and straight into the firepod...

Sorry, didn't bother doing any sound-settings for this... I have to do them all over again for this guitar, and I haven't gotten there yet! Suffice to say these suck except the kayleigh sound, love that one=)

Pod x3-live clips;
Highway 100 some dirt is a Hiwatt with some dirt, and bass, mid and treble on 50%
Highway 100 clean is a clean hiwatt...
Treadplate is a mesa boogie, simple settings there as well...

And last, but not least... a small bonus just for fun - The solo from Marillions Kayleigh - on the first take! lucky I guess :occasion14:

It's comfortable, precise and real punchy to play. It's quite a leap from my two strats - and I have some adjustment to do=) Keeping this beast under control is a lot harder......

All clips use all pickup positions... starting at 1.

It's up and running but will need a fret dress as one of the fret slots hasn't been cut deep enough. Intonation still to be done properly, blah, blah.

Hi again...

Logged in to post a new clip, a short one... Koa tele has the DiMarzio Super Distortion T in the bridge slot, neck pu is still Virtual Vintage tele neck. Here's rest of the gear used: Orange Tiny Terror head, Bogner 1x12" Cube (V30 speaker), Fulltone GT-500 Booster/OD/Distortion, ye olde Shure SM57 (Unidyne III), Pro Tools LE (Mbox classic). Cables George L, red Dunlop Jazz III picks. No effects or processing of any kind added afterwards, just SM57 pointed between e and r on the Bogner and rec pressed. TT is on 7 watts, vol open just a hair (you can hear some pick attacks in the background if you listen carefully), tone at little less than 12 o'clock, gain at 1 o'clock.

During the clip sound changes: neck pu/booster od -> bridge pu/distortion -> neck pu/distortion -> bridge pu/distortion.

This is pretty close to the sound I'm mostly getting out of the koa tele at the moment. I'll try to record some single note lines with a little MXR analog delay added at some point.

Here we go again! I own both an Orange AD-30, and a Line 6 Pod, so I decided to see if you can tell the difference as to which is t00b and which isn't!

The Pod Rig consists of: My Warmoth thinline> Pod (Citrus Model, "4x12 British V30's" cab, "57 on axis" micing, and 0% room.)

The Orange Rig: thinline> Orange AD-30 HTC head> Orange 2x12 cab loaded with V30's> Audix OM 2 mic, miced on axis to one of the speakers.

On both the pod and the amp- gain and eq set the same. "Presence" on the pod was set at 12 o'clock as the amp has no presence control.
So the discrepancies are, the cab size and mic- as far as cab size goes, when only one speaker is mic'd, I find that it makes very little difference. I am sorry about my mic choice, but the audix om2 is as close as I have to a 57- both have the same size diaphragm, and a similar design.

To record these clips, I DI'd my guitar, then played that signal back into the two rigs.

This one might be a little more challenging than the AC 30 debate, cause the AD 30 isn't quite as well known of an amp!

Ok, here (finally) is my submission to the tone war.

To start, I will concide one point to Mr. Lizard ... Guitar Rig's "Plexi" model sounds nothing like a real JTM45. However, I use Guitar Rig for its pristine clean, and high-gain tones which we already know he doesn't like. :laughing7:

I decided to go back to a piece of "vintage" software ... Amplitube V1. It's normally a little noisy for my liking (just like a real t00b amp), so I don't use it much. Its the "modern" preamp model, with the gain set at about 1 o'clock, the "British" model EQ, with the bass at 6, mids at 8, treble at 5 and presence at 9. The cabinet model is a vintage 4x12, close-miced with a condensor (which I do for real amps too ... I find the 57 a little too nasally). I used headphones to get the tone you're about to hear, 'cause I'm still saving up to get new studio monitors. It was recorded as one take ... just me noodling, with no digital trickery whatsoever. The only FX is a tiny bit of reverb, which I would add to an amp recording as well.

Now, whether you actually like the tone is subjective, and therefore irrelevent to the spirit of this test. I start with a Lenny Kravitz-esque riff, turn the guitar's volume down, and play it again, turn up and play it again. The tone cleans up, and gets dirty again ... proving that software can exhibit these elusive dynamics.

The whole point with using modelling software/hardware is versatillity. I can go from a country twang, to mellow jazz, to classic rock crunch, to uber-metal with little more than the click of a footswitch. I'd like to see you do that with your "t00b" amp!

Here's a line in clip. Basically the same settings as before, but I ran a line directly into my computer to record. I think the notes sound better, but there is a tiny bit of a crackle from running cables. Grr.

Okay, so I'm still working on those clips.

Here's the first one. This is with the treble turned up to about 8 on my amp and to 8 or so on my guitar, and I believe this was in the neck pup. I added a little reverb to it with Cubase.

I'll hopefully have more ready soon. I'm experimenting to see if line in sampling sounds better than sticking a condenser mic in front of my Micro Cube.

ProTools is the way to go.

Here's a piece of a tune I recorded without using a single microphone. ProTools7.1, using the Digi002 interface. The gutar sounds are an Ibanez Destroyer running through Guitar Rig II. The bass is a Spector 5 string running through Amplitube. The drums are BFD Lite (included with ProTools). This is an early version of the track, and just a rough mix. I've done considerable work to it since, but it'll give you an idea. Despite the extra expense, I feel that Digidesign has the best stuff out there for home recording. I've recently upgraded to ProTools 8, and the MIDI handling is now really useful as well.

Ok GD, here goes nothing.

The first clip is Fuzzed. My Explorer, Bridge position, to the fast track usb, and through Guitar Rig. I used the Hiwatt modeler (High White) with a Big Muff (Big Fuzz).

The second clip is extreme gain. Explorer bridge again, to the fast track, through guitar rig. That one was through the Bogner Uberschall modeler (Ultra Sonic) into a Gain Booster and a Noise Reduction.

These clips are in no way musical, and sadly, are the extent of my current abilities :laughing7:

Don't have a fave manufacturer - I'm a stomp whore... meaning, I use whatever sounds good; regardless of manufacturer.

I like to keep things [i]real[/i] simple, so's what comes out of the speaker is pure tone.

Currently I have (and only use one at a time):

Fulltone OCD - liveliest overdrive/boost I've ever used
MI Audio Crunch Box - the sound of a cranked old-school 4-input Marshall
MXR DIME - does Boston and various 80's metal tone

What I generally do is set my Marshall JTM45 to half volume and use the pedal for dirt whenst needed - any FX are provided either
by my Wet Rig (playing live) or in my DAW (recording).

Somewhat recently I've had:

Fulltone Fulldrive 2 - pretty bland
ZVex SuperDuper 2in1 - great clean boost for clean tones only
DOD (?) Bad Monkey - good Marshall-ish tone for cheap

In the past I had a few of those Rockman 1/2 rack units - cool sh!t; very cool. Wish I hadn't sold 'em.
In particular, the Stereo Chorus/Delay was schweeeeeet; esp. the Long Chorus setting. Pure analog.

I've had several BOSS pedals/1/2 rack units in my lifetime. I haven't used BOSS in over 15 years for a reason... they're the Earl Schieb of pedals.

I've attached one of my test clips which features the MI Audio Crunch Box throughout (no EQing on the guitar tone whatsoever - rec'd straight off the speaker).

hey Marko,

i just finished a recording where I used the Walnut Strat. But I have to say this is kind of a weirdo song, just to test the strat, so dont listen to carefully :laughing7:
All guitar parts are recorded with the Walnut Strat. I used a 50 Watt 2 channel Marshall JCM 800 Head (lead sound nice but clean sucks...) with 2*12 Celestion vintage 30, no recording preamps, no effects exept some reverb and some reverse effects in cubase.
For the solo parts the tone volume is used a lot (bridge pickup)... as well as the whammy bar for the harmonics...

We had a 60 degree day here in Kansas. Not bad for January. So I took advantage of the sunlight. Natural light is so much better for photograpy. The woodgrain really pops.
