<p>The theme for this week&#8217;s <a href="http://unplugyourkids.com/unplugged-project/">Unplugged Project</a> was <em>fast</em>.  This is a<em> fast</em> post because the week went really <em>fast</em>, and we will soon be flying in a <em>fast </em>airplane to France.</p>
<p>We did experiment with some rubber band powered cars, and finally succeeded in making an original prototype from a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F1ST1Q?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=nobaretothdot-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000F1ST1Q">Knex Set</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=nobaretothdot-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000F1ST1Q" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /><br />
that went very <em>fast</em>&#8230;for about 6 inches.  I think the axle needs work, as does the length of the rubber band.  It was fun, even though our model obviously needs improvements.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/rmvIAKjwuvh762AVVnZwIQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SlqtludvIKI/AAAAAAAAFaU/pwFejx8-KL8/s400/IMG_9203.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>If you have budding engineers at your house, try this project and see what you can come up with!</p>
<p>Here are a few links to get you started:</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">If you did a <em>fast</em>-themed <a href="../../unplugged-project/">Unplugged Project</a> this week then please link to your post below (not just your blog, we always want to be able to find your<em> fast </em>post).  If you didn’t do a <em>fast</em> project, then don’t link, but please read more about how to join in the <a href="../../unplugged-project/">Unplugged Project here</a>.  We’d love to have you!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">++++++++++</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Since I will be away until August 6th, the <a href="http://unplugyourkids.com/unplugged-project/">Unplugged Project</a> will be on vacation also (although, if anyone is interested,  I hope to post a few virtual postcards from France, perhaps even one a day if I can!).</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The next <a href="http://unplugyourkids.com/unplugged-project/">Unplugged Project</a> will be <span style="color: #800000;"><strong>Monday August 10th</strong></span> and the theme will be:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>Photograph</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I bet we&#8217;ll have a lot of photos by the time we get home, and you&#8217;ll have a lot of time to think about what you will do with your photos!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Enjoy and have fun!</p>

<p>Oh my goodness! For once I was actually in the right place at the right time for something cool!</p>
<p>A few weeks ago while I should have been doing laundry, I just happened to stumble on <a href="http://moomama96.blogspot.com/2009/06/perfect-sentiment.html#comments">a post by MooMama</a> (I love <a href="http://moomama96.blogspot.com/">MooMama&#8217;s natural parenting blog</a>, but usually I just lurk on occasion). <a href="http://moomama96.blogspot.com/">MooMama</a> explained that, continuing a &#8220;pay it forward&#8221; idea that she took part in, she would send a surprise to the first three people who commented on her post. The catch: those three people would have to send a little something to three other people, and so on down the line.</p>
<p>Loving this idea as a fun way to spread some random goodness, I squeaked my comment in in 3rd place!</p>
<p><a href="http://moomama96.blogspot.com/">MooMama</a>&#8217;s little package arrived earlier this week. You can see what lovely little goodies she sent in the photo above! A potholder made by one of her daughters &#8211; age 8, the same age as my oldest daughter (aren&#8217;t those colors lovely?), a cute bee magnet, and set of homemade kindness cards &#8211; perfect for the theme of this swap.</p>
<p>Now it is my turn to pay it forward. Since we are going away to France next week, I unfortunately won&#8217;t have time for nice homemade things, but I thought perhaps a little simple something from France might make an interesting surprise.</p>
<ul>
<li>If you want a little surprise from France sent by me, and if you are interested in paying it forward, then be one of the first three comments on this post and I&#8217;ll contact you to get your address.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Please continue the sharing by sending a little something to three other people, who in turn, should be willing to send a goody, etc.  By the way, keep it simple!  You needn&#8217;t send anything fancy.  It is the gesture of connecting with a random &#8220;stranger&#8221; that is so meaningful.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>You don&#8217;t have to have a blog yourself, but you must be willing to pay it forward to three people.  Please let me know what you do, so that I can publish it here.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Finally, in my case, I am afraid you&#8217;ll also have to be a bit patient. I won&#8217;t be in France until the end of next week and shipping might take a little longer too (unless you are in Europe).</li>
</ul>
<p>So, who wants to join in?</p>
<p>PS. You might also enjoy checking out the pay it forward posts from my two fellow commenters on <a href="http://www.moomama96.blogspot.com/">MooMama&#8217;s blog</a>: <a href="http://whichname.blogspot.com/2009/07/pay-it-forward.html">Nicola of Which Name?</a> and <a href="http://www.littlehouseongreen.com/2009/07/who-doesnt-love-little-surprises.html">Little House on Green</a>.</p>

<p>This post is a follow-up to last Sunday&#8217;s <a href="http://unplugyourkids.com/2009/06/28/colored-rice/">Tiny &#8211; Cool Colored Rice</a> post.  The <a href="http://unplugyourkids.com/2009/06/28/colored-rice/">rice coloring</a> was such a fun project in and of itself, that I decided just to focus on that.  I chose this week&#8217;s <a href="http:http://unplugyourkids.com/unplugged-project///">Unplugged Project</a> theme of <em>container</em> because it fit nicely with our original reason for making colored rice in the first place:  A &#8220;Find It&#8221; Jar.</p>
<p>For a while now I have eyed <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000J2GZNU?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=nobaretothdot-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000J2GZNU">these &#8220;Find It&#8221; games</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=nobaretothdot-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000J2GZNU" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" />, thinking they would be fun for the car, travel or restaurants.  But the the potential fun factor never seemed to justify the price, so I have never bought one.</p>
<p>With a long plane ride to Europe in our near future, I found myself once again considering buying one for the trip (would they let this through security?).  But then it occurred to me that this could be fun and easy to make, so we decided to give it a try!</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll need a jar (a <em>container</em>!), preferably fairly tall and with a wide mouth.  I used a glass spaghetti sauce jar, but I would recommend something plastic for travel or young children (a mayonnaise jar perhaps?).</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll also need some <a href="http://unplugyourkids.com/2009/06/28/colored-rice/">colored rice</a> and many small objects to hide.  I found that light, flat objects (like Legos) did not work very well since they seemed to stay on the surface of the rice.  Another idea would be to choose objects according to a theme: nature objects (pebbles, acorns, twigs, shells), or animals (little toy animals), etc.</p>
<p>Tip:  Consider the colors of your rice and how choice of color can increase the level of difficulty.  You could hide all green objects in green rice for example, or do as I did and hide a variety of different-colored objects in multicolored rice.</p>
<p>Normally you could just make a list of the hidden objects, but since I wanted my non-reading 3 year-old to be able to play too, I decided to make a picture card instead.</p>
<p>I laid out all the objects on a plain white piece of paper (for clarity) and took a photo of them.  Next I printed out the photo so my 3 year-old would know what to find:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QTn2CxxoqpPMgEK_xDNEHw?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SlFM2CjlAUI/AAAAAAAAFZY/kk2JI4YcdLY/s400/IMG_9105.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>The final step is to drop the objects into the jar and pour in the colored rice.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/3mn4XsU3ef81fSCN4R3TOQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SlFAuXKS6kI/AAAAAAAAFZA/FBe_2Q9aBV4/s400/IMG_9081.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/VwFuWm6Ifu3seWLXGVkphg?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SlFAxgw8ZyI/AAAAAAAAFZE/-yZhKgJEV7Q/s400/IMG_9084.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Don&#8217;t fill the jar completely, otherwise the rice and the objects won&#8217;t be able to move around very well.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QN5-pVavTaOs9BBvfzd2xw?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SlFA0g6FXRI/AAAAAAAAFZI/M_J37P2ikzY/s400/IMG_9085.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Put the lid on (tightly!) and shake it up.</p>
<p>If you are worried about your children opening the jar and making a mess, you could glue the lid on.  If you don&#8217;t glue the lid on however, you can easily change out the hidden treasures for others to keep it interesting.</p>
<p>I glued a bit of ribbon around the lid to make it prettier, but that&#8217;s just me being an over-the-top perfectionist and is absolutely not necessary.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/B1LpH6FRWCvC3mRjkdo0rQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SlFA3-3eBwI/AAAAAAAAFZM/C7mhi1JgDXE/s400/IMG_9091.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Give the jar and list or photo to your children and let them see how many objects they can find.  This is my 3 year-old giving it a go:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6G5mbHFieVWobCD_HdP5hA?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SlFM569HMUI/AAAAAAAAFZc/1dTpXJHG9fY/s400/IMG_9109.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>For older children,you could even give them a timer to race each other.  For solitary play, they can try to top their own best time!</p>
<p>NOTE &#8211; Storing the <a href="http://unplugyourkids.com/2009/06/28/colored-rice/">Colored Rice</a>:  I finally found a use for the lovely, old-fashioned style French soda bottles that I had packratted away in the back of the pantry for years.  I keep them on the kitchen counter now because they look so pretty!  What do you think?</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/pKFSjoOVVIU_LTnUja1G0Q?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SlFMy-mgCbI/AAAAAAAAFZU/1VP2kEsGTiM/s400/IMG_9107.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">++++++++++</p>

<p>It is time for a new look.  I feel stale, boring, stagnant.  Should I go platinum (I am already sort of blonde) or jet black??</p>
<p>Actually I am referring to <em>Unplug Your Kids</em>, not me, although my personal look could certainly use an update too.</p>
<p>Confession:  I have been secretly playing with new themes for some time now and today I accidently took the irreversible step (well, reversible, but with a lot of work) of pressing the &#8220;Activate&#8221; button instead of the &#8220;Preview&#8221; button.  Since that small misstep instantaneously erased all the changes I had so lovingly tweaked over the years, fate is telling me that now is the time for change!  (Haven&#8217;t I heard that somewhere before recently??)</p>
<p>So <em>Unplug Your Kids</em> might look a bit funny and incomplete for a while, but hopefully it will all be for the best.  So stay tuned to see if will I choose platinum or jet black &#8230;</p>
<p>(By the way, for you techie types out there, this time I am attempting to create a <a href="http://op111.net/53">child theme</a> so this fatal error never happens again!)</p>

<p>Most parents would agree that dinner preparation is the toughest time of the day. We are worn out and the kids are tired and crabby.  The easiest solution for a hard earned bit of peace is to plunk them down in front of the TV or a video in order to cook without &#8220;help&#8221; or having to play umpire.</p>
<p>On really bad days, I sometimes find myself too easily wanting to resort to the distraction of a video, especially with my 3 year-old who of course wants to &#8220;help&#8221; with everything, including dinner. So whenever I come across a new trick to happily and easily occupy her, I am eager to share it with others!</p>
<p>Several years ago I picked up some colored plastic threading and counting frogs at a yard sale. I have used them for everything from math homework to French lessons, but I just discovered a new game that my 3 year old loves: &#8220;Find the Frog!&#8221;  This is proof that we don&#8217;t need something complicated or expensive (or electronic) to entertain and teach a child.</p>
<p>Our frog friends come in three sizes and six colors. I simply tell my 3 year-old what to thread, for example, &#8220;medium blue,&#8221; and she does it with joy! Sometimes I get fancy and say &#8220;three large orange,&#8221; or &#8220;one small red and two medium green.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/uPVz_3aghSRCAf0Q84DIWw?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Sk5ou7jsokI/AAAAAAAAFYI/dDqdkF4hhHQ/s400/IMG_9009.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/8w2Y1tUXadmV5Ni9npaU9A?authkey=Gv1sRgCOOpxc2JyYSJMw&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Sk5orqRS7NI/AAAAAAAAFYE/YxdlJoTorTw/s400/IMG_9011.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>This is so simple that most of you are probably saying &#8220;Umm &#8230; what&#8217;s so special about this?&#8221; But since it never occurred to me that this game could entrance my daughter for an hour at a time, it might not have occurred to a few of you either.</p>
<p>Plus, consider these benefits:</p>
<ul>
<li>I can work in the kitchen while playing this game with her (or be lazy and sit on the sofa and read a magazine).</li>
<li>The game teaches colors, numbers, and sizes.</li>
<li>Children practice remembering and following increasingly complicated instructions.</li>
<li>The threading is an excellent exercise of fine motor skills.</li>
<li>You could play this with almost anything that threads:  beads, thread spools, colored pasta, or buttons for example.  (Great for creatively repurposing household items!)</li>
<li>Variation for non-threadable items:  have your child place certain items in an egg carton, container, or selection of dishware.  For example:  &#8220;Two blue buttons in the glass&#8221; or &#8220;One large seashell in the red bowl.&#8221;</li>
<li>Make this an activity for your <a href="http://unplugyourkids.com/2008/04/15/the-mommy-im-bored-box/">&#8220;Mommy I&#8217;m Bored Box!&#8221;</a></li>

<p>While surfing the &#8220;What Others Bought&#8221; links at Amazon one day last winter, I discovered the wonderful old book <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1930900058?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1930900058">Twig</a></em><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1930900058" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" />, by author and illustrator <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Orton_Jones">Elzabeth Orton Jones</a> (1910-2005).  My 8 year-old daughter really likes tales of fairies and magic and this book sounded perfect.  It WAS perfect.  My daughter adored it and read it in one sitting!</p>
<p>She even chose it for her school book report book, complete with a cute diorama (I wish we had saved that to illustrate this post, but alas, it was taken apart and scattered who knows where).</p>
<p>This 1942 story centers around Twig (which was also the author&#8217;s nickname), a lonely little girl who decides one day to make a fairy house out of a discarded old tomato can.  I will let you discover the wonderful adventure that ensues.</p>
<p>I am so grateful to <a href="http://www.purplehousepress.com/index.htm">Purple House Press</a>, the publisher of our 2002 edition of <em>Twig</em>, for their wonderful work in reprinting this lost treasure!  The mission of <a href="http://www.purplehousepress.com/index.htm">Purple House Press</a> is:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><a href="http://www.purplehousepress.com/about.htm">&#8220;to revive long lost, but well loved children&#8217;s books. Today&#8217;s children deserve to read wholesome stories from a simpler time and we know grownups want to revisit with old childhood friends too!&#8221;</a></p>
<p>You can still order <a href="http://www.purplehousepress.com/twig.htm">Twig from the Purple House Press website</a>, but all they have left are more expensive <a href="http://www.purplehousepress.com/twig.htm">editions autographed by Elizabeth Orton Jones</a>.  We loved the book so much, that I just ordered an autographed copy to have in our collection of very special, keep always, books.</p>
<p>You can also order new (from Amazon affiliate sellers only) or used copies of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1930900058?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1930900058">Twig from Amazon</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1930900058" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" />.  Our copy was a used one from an Amazon seller but it was in like-new condition and far less expensive than the Amazon affiliates&#8217; new editions.</p>
<p>After enjoying <em>Twig</em>, my daughter wanted to read more books by Elizabeth Orton Jones.  I searched about and found <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1930900066?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1930900066">Big Susan</a></em><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1930900066" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" />, written in 1947 and also published by <a href="http://www.purplehousepress.com/index.htm">Purple House Press</a> in 2002.</p>
<p><em>Big Susan</em> is about a little girl and her dollhouse (the story is based on the actual doll house and dolls that the author played with as a child).  The dollhouse is in complete disarray on Christmas Eve, the one night of the year where the dolls can come to life.</p>
<p>We read this story together as a bedtime book and I laughed out loud at the descriptions of the poor dolls (Nurse was standing on her head in the bathroom wash basin) and the general state of the dollhouse.  It reminded me of our always-messy dollhouse. It also, sadly, somewhat resembles our own house at times (although I have yet to find myself upside down in a wash basin)!</p>
<p>This is a sweet story all about Christmas magic, love, friendship and giving.  My children and I all loved it and were sorry to see it end.  Although it is more of a girl book I suppose, my 7 year-old son adored it and was actually the most eager to keep reading on every night.</p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1930900066?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1930900066">Big Susan</a></em><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1930900066" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /> is easier to find than <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1930900058?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1930900058">Twig</a></em><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1930900058" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" />.  You can order it <a href="http://www.purplehousepress.com/susan.htm">directly from Purple House</a>, or <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1930900066?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1930900066">from Amazon</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=shoppingunplugged-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1930900066" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" />.</p>
<p>Trust me. These are books you&#8217;ll love and want to keep to pass down to your grandchildren!</p>
<p>Here are pictures of the text of <em>Twig</em>, to give you some idea of the reading level (it is 152 pages long) &#8211; recommended ages 6 to 12:</p>

<p>Our <a href="http://www.unplugyourkids.com/unplugged-project/">Weekly Unplugged Project</a> post for this week&#8217;s theme of <em>tiny</em> is coloring rice (a grain of rice is <em>tiny, </em>right?).</p>
<p>Not very original, but I was going to take this a step farther with a colored rice project.  However this simple first step was such a HUGE hit with my kids of all ages and genders, that it deserves its own post.</p>
<p>I like color.  There is not one white wall in my house.  Therefore I have always wanted to try coloring rice. Is that a logical progression to you?  It is to me.</p>
<p>Instructions for how to make colored rice are all over the internet, such as <a href="http://www.dltk-kids.com/recipesdb/view.asp?rid=202">here</a> and <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/SYCW1ECFPQL8MTP/">here</a>. Google &#8220;coloring rice&#8221; or &#8220;colored rice&#8221; and you will see!</p>
<p>We needed a large bag of white rice. Don&#8217;t use brown rice or parboiled (which is sort of beige), since the colors will show up better if the rice is as white as possible.</p>
<p>I checked all the prices per ounce at our one local grocery store and found a 10 pound bag for about $8.00 (I am sure you could shop around and find a much better deal than that).</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll also need rubbing alcohol (maybe), food coloring, and plastic ziploc baggies.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/oZQDQWgJHL5jrp-ORu64VA?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2fAn-jgI/AAAAAAAAFW0/NIXm7-rkVVc/s400/IMG_8910.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>I read somewhere that you can use vinegar instead of alcohol, or it can be done simply with food coloring alone, but the rice might not be as brightly colored.</p>
<p>We did a few batches without alcohol and they were fine, I honestly couldn&#8217;t tell the difference and the smell when damp was a lot better without it (the alcohol smell does disappear once the rice is fully dry).  I would skip the alcohol next time.</p>
<p>Some people say that paste food coloring produces a brighter result, but I thought ours turned out great with liquid coloring.</p>
<p>I passed out a baggie to each child and then scooped a few cups of rice into each baggie.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/SQ5B-prgIWZT955Qg5nfMA?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2i0Z83TI/AAAAAAAAFW4/8Ot7sEZ3v14/s400/IMG_8912.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Next I added a bit of alcohol to each baggie (not much, a teaspoon maybe?).</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/LE46jD9xqcq4W6Lkw3nB0g?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2l6Gn2mI/AAAAAAAAFW8/6kP1XbkJ1qc/s400/IMG_8914.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Each child chose a color to make and dropped in the appropriate color, or mixture of colors.</p>
<p>NOTE: This is a really fun project for learning how colors mix (if you are a kindergarten teacher or homeschooling parent, be sure to remember this one, because it would make a great kindergarten color project)!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/tNDwA_4A-iVnVj397A0Y-w?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2pIzi9dI/AAAAAAAAFXA/rVHBlrxpx_Y/s400/IMG_8919.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>The really fun part is shaking and smooshing the baggie to spread the color.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MU1yUX6UqDvlbem7aVgcGg?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2y83OqVI/AAAAAAAAFXQ/out4u-X6flc/s400/IMG_8921.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/jXz6UZheMt4XBytJvp8L2Q?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2vkkiL6I/AAAAAAAAFXM/JDSQ5wORFu8/s400/IMG_8916.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Just be sure the baggie is closed properly. We had a bit of an accident as you can see here:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/X9OZn4p_mfZ6dUHQBfstmQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2sbmheRI/AAAAAAAAFXE/TJivs1Pnvh0/s400/IMG_8920.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>(I found <a href="http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/608/Coloring_Rice_and_Pasta_Tubs58686.shtml">these instructions</a> that call for a plastic margarine container for the mixing instead of plastic bags. This method might be safer, as long as you make sure the lid is on tightly.)</p>
<p>We discovered that the more you smoosh and shake, the more uniformly distributed and solid the color is.  If you only do a bit of mixing, enough to just barely color everything, you get a very pretty variation of colors which I preferred:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/3VDTOM3Jbhh9pUlYBJKTIA?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg08gVSf9I/AAAAAAAAFWk/HVDUEwD_0r8/s400/IMG_8960.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Once you feel the rice is colored to your satisfaction, then spread it on a foil covered baking sheet and put it in a 200 degree oven until dry.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/5DnSv5Hk4q_uxkvMrGCPOQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg225d0HEI/AAAAAAAAFXU/XiZKKQ9xSug/s400/IMG_8926.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Stir about half way through the process to uncover the wetter rice from underneath. It took about 15 minutes for us, but if you put in a lot of liquid color and alcohol, it might take a bit longer.  You can also let it air dry, but I am far too impatient for that.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/eFdbzNCyf23BnN9CPAnu7w?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg26RqizaI/AAAAAAAAFXY/Fz9L1xCmfIs/s400/IMG_8935.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>The cooled, dry rice was irresistible to little hands. Even I had to touch it and sift it through my fingers. What a great, Montessori sensory material!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/JM5VaMktTH_W8YdwAUGp3g?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2-Mm7WNI/AAAAAAAAFXc/N3OW6ZBj2LM/s400/IMG_8943.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>After the rice is dry and cool, use it right away or store it in a baggie or jar.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/8wjlk5Bq0I4M2SvmqLcXig?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg3BZnWKtI/AAAAAAAAFXg/GWD0_K9EKgk/s400/IMG_8925.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>My kids and I all LOVED this project! We made lots and lots of colors. The children experimented with different color combinations and amounts of mixing.</p>
<p>One of my favorites was this one, where my 7 year-old son put many different colors in. I anticipated a big muddy brown mess, but he didn&#8217;t mix it up much and ended up with quite a variety of lovely earth tones in his batch, as you can see here:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QOn8-S-gx_hbYs5169nMwA?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg05UbbgEI/AAAAAAAAFWg/IrfQFKHufbU/s400/IMG_8959.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Remarkable fact:  The kids are 8 (girl), 7 (boy) and 3 (girl)&#8230;plus a guest: age 8 (boy), and me (girl)&#8230; age more than 8 and less than 100, and we ALL loved this project. It is hard to find a project that appeals to all ages, but this one was it for us.</p>
<p>As my oldest daughter said, &#8220;Our kitchen is a colored rice factory!!&#8221;</p>
<p>By the way, anticipate a good lesson in vacuum cleaner use after this project.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/BJNDwcyudemtGknji9TUgQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg2boYVddI/AAAAAAAAFWw/8bbvas-k7cw/s400/IMG_8968.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Also note the hopeful dog parked strategically under the kitchen table, just waiting for falling goodies:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/S9WMAwvbzx46t8GDKW0Olw?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/Skg1DO1UUaI/AAAAAAAAFWs/Cb5ejNOpXLA/s400/IMG_8963.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hoiIsnbyZz0xKkxj-JNqQg?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL7-PkcAfI/AAAAAAAAFV0/CzLWj0zD1RQ/s400/IMG_8769.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>It was a very thrilling day today &#8211; <a href="http://www.unplugyourkids.com/2009/06/17/worm-bin/">our 2 lb. bag of Red Wigglers</a> finally arrived!!</p>
<p>The Fedex driver had probably never had a more excited welcome than he got this afternoon.  As my 8 year-old daughter put it:  &#8220;Now we have millions and millions of pets!!!&#8221;  Hmmm&#8230;.not exactly what we need with 9 cats, a dog, 2 birds, 2 fish and a bunch of <a href="http://www.unplugyourkids.com/2007/09/24/the-birds-do-it-the-bees-do-it-even-the-itty-bitty-sea-monkeys-do-it/">happily reproducing sea monkeys</a>.</p>
<p>Here is the box of our very well traveled worms.  Did Fedex know what they had in here?</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/K2VNOu5VG4tMCexWDrmnvg?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL71daSrNI/AAAAAAAAFVQ/RYKklnyx7KA/s400/IMG_8736.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>The worms arrived nicely packed in a brown paper bag.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/UW9Nu2i8zqGYgVoKmRMkPw?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL72XNHo8I/AAAAAAAAFVU/Qhm57L6xQ-w/s400/IMG_8737.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>We opened the bag&#8230;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/4XZJQ02BQj4oqFqRWin1jQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL73T4YGYI/AAAAAAAAFVY/VHH6hoC6M4A/s400/IMG_8738.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>&#8230; and this is what we saw:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/c76sLYU9p8W5EcNZpFCdWA?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL75svVMqI/AAAAAAAAFVk/bCuzl3IgIaI/s400/IMG_8745.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>After holding a few worm friends:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/O8MXS1ICmTESnxW_1c8G7Q?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL74l6RayI/AAAAAAAAFVg/V16J5bwP-7Y/s400/IMG_8740.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>And discovering an egg:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/SZZX1ZWU0kdX-woVXopkJg?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL73wxpYVI/AAAAAAAAFVc/3aHp3k-tSsY/s400/IMG_8755.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>We gently tipped them into our &#8220;<a href="http://www.unplugyourkids.com/2009/06/17/worm-bin/">Worm Hotel</a>&#8221; and tossed some of the damp newspaper on top of them.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/VCqe2rvvVdhvmBtmAGqUzg?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL76chK7kI/AAAAAAAAFVo/PR3lzBhhnYk/s400/IMG_8757.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Next came food.  We were certain that they were hungry after their very long trip, the sort of trip that most worms never have to make.</p>
<p>The menu consisted of a medley of carrot peels, followed by leftover bok choi greens and brown rice, with some tea leaves for dessert:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Hu0M-brZWRFusGQebmGLDQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL77dvttTI/AAAAAAAAFVs/8ILfc5ZkE40/s400/IMG_8762.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>We hope that our new pets will be very happy and produce a great deal of lovely, rich<span style="text-decoration: line-through;"> poop</span> castings to transform our nasty clay soil into gorgeous, moist, nutrient-filled humus.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2_3RPmOx0AOC1e10OWSlyw?authkey=Gv1sRgCIqV1JvRw7Oieg&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/__b3erBZWaSI/SkL8FokxVaI/AAAAAAAAFV4/7alb0f07M6M/s400/IMG_8767.JPG" alt="" /></a></p>

I guess I have been taking a bit of a refreshing blog break. Time and inspiration permitting, I might be up for writing a bit more often than I have been.</p>
<p>So, here is my first TV-related post in a while for anyone interested in television and its effects on children.</p>
<p>Many thanks to my friend <a href="http://www.wishythewriter.com">Wishy</a> who is always way more up with current news than I am, and who kindly emails me links to any article she thinks might be of interest on my blog! I guess she is my Director of Current Affairs.</p>
<p>Here is Wishy&#8217;s latest find: <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31051013/">Even Background TV May Delay Children&#8217;s Speech</a>.  This article is nearly a month old, but that&#8217;s how long it took me to get around to writing my post.  Oh well.</p>
<p>According this <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/">MSNBC</a> article, a new study* has found that for each hour of television exposure (even as background noise), infants heard 770 fewer words spoken to them by adults (a 7% decrease).  There was also a decrease in the number and length of children&#8217;s vocalizations, as well as child-adult conversation.</p>
<p>The possible explanation for this?  Here is the researchers&#8217; conclusion:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31051013/"><em>&#8220;Some of these reductions are likely due to children being left alone in front of the television screen,&#8221; the researchers write in the June issue of the journal Archives of Pediatrics &amp; Adolescent Medicine, &#8220;but others likely reflect situations in which adults, though present, are distracted by the screen and not interacting with their infant in a discernible manner.&#8221;</em></a></p>
<p>I would imagine that most mothers have been naturally chatting away with their pre-verbal babies since language first began.  But experts now realize that <a href="http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:lrsoM9A9-x4J:www.rch.org.au/emplibrary/ecconnections/CCH_Vol9_No4_December_2006.pdf+conversing+with+infants&amp;cd=5&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us&amp;client=firefox-a">two-way linguistic interaction with adults is absolutely crucial for infant language development</a>.</p>
<p>By the way, one startling fact from this article is that 30% of households have the TV on <em>all the time</em>.  Wow!</p>
<p>A final thought:  I wonder if too much talk radio would also have the same negative effect on language development.  I know when I am trying to listen to the news on <a href="http://www.npr.org">NPR</a>, I am not paying a whole lot of attention to what my children are saying either.</p>
<p>This is a good reminder for us all I think.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">++++++++++</p>
<p>* The study, entitled <em><a href="http://archpedi.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/163/6/554">Audible Television and Decreased Adult Words, Infant Vocalizations, and Conversational Turns</a></em>, appeared in the June 2009 issue of <a href="http://archpedi.ama-assn.org/">The Archives of Pediatric &amp; Adolescent Medicine</a>.  Here is <a href="http://archpedi.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/163/6/554">a link to the abstract</a>.  The <a href="http://archpedi.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/163/6/554">full article</a> is also available online with membership, or for a one-time access fee.</p>
