The tragic murder of 16-year-old Joyce McLain shocked the small town of East Millinocket, Maine, in August 1980. A popular honors student, cheerleader, saxophonist, and aspiring soccer player, Joyce vanished during a routine evening jog near Schenck High School. Her partially clothed body was discovered two days later in a wooded area behind the soccer fields—beaten to death with blunt force trauma, hands bound with a blue cloth, and a telephone insulator likely the murder weapon. No sexual assault occurred, and heavy thunderstorms washed away potential evidence, leaving no fingerprints or usable DNA.

The case haunted the community for nearly 38 years, featured on Unsolved Mysteries in 1989, spurring tips but no immediate resolution. Philip Scott Fournier, then 19, emerged as the perpetrator through multiple confessions—to family, a pastor, coworkers, and notably a janitor in 1989—revealing non-public details like the weapon and Joyce’s condition. Despite claims of unreliability due to a brain injury from a nearby truck crash (hours after the murder), he was convicted in a 2018 bench trial and sentenced to 45 years. Appeals failed, and he remains incarcerated.

In June 1988, 23-year-old Philip Innes Fraser—a bright, adventurous young man from Anchorage, Alaska, and the son of two prominent doctors—set out on a solo road trip south to start pre-med studies at Evergreen State College in Washington. Driving his packed black 1983 VW Jetta, Philip was full of promise. After surrendering his handguns at the Canadian border, he stopped at a remote café in the Yukon.

That’s where everything went tragically wrong.

At the Forty Mile Flats Café, witnesses saw Philip reluctantly pick up a nervous, clean-cut hitchhiker in his early 20s. It was an act of kindness on a lonely highway that would cost him his life.

Hours later, that same hitchhiker was spotted driving Philip’s Jetta alone—boldly impersonating him. He shared intimate details of Philip’s life, family, and plans with strangers, even spending the night at a kind couple’s home while they fixed his car.

Then, Philip’s burned-out Jetta was found abandoned in Prince George, British Columbia.

Weeks later, Philip’s body was discovered in a remote gravel pit—shot multiple times. The killer had vanished, taking Philip’s wallet, passport, and identity.

In 1988, Annie Laurie Hearin was a 73-year-old southern socialite who vanished under bizarre circumstances. Hearin’s body has never been found and she was declared legally dead in 1991. No one has officially been charged with her kidnapping.

Rogest Cain was a family man & had always hoped to create a better life for his 7 children. In 1958, he moved from Mississippi to Los Angeles, California. There he was able to give his children advantages that he never had. His children stated that he was always a loving, caring father to them. By 1986, Rogest was 62 years old & worked for the Department of Parks and Recreation. On the afternoon of February 18th, 1986, he left his home, telling his sister that he was going to a hardware store. However, he never returned home.

On October 28, 1981, in Newburgh Heights, Ohio, 3 young boys made a gruesome discovery, a young man lying face up in a puddle in a ravine. The body was in a “Christ-like” pose with one leg crossed over the other at the ankle. It seemed to have been deliberately placed. Apart from some minor scratches & bruises, there were no obvious signs of injury. Hours later, the body was positively identified as 17 year old Kurt Sova. An autopsy revealed that he had died 24 -36 hours before his body was found, he had been missing for 5 days.

A fourth person, Mark Haydon, was convicted for helping to dispose of the bodies. The trial was one of the longest and most publicised in Australian legal history.

Dick Hansen and his friend Jean were hanging out together before chatting in his car at the end of the night. A car pulled up and parked behind them on a street where only their two cars remained. As they left, Jean followed Dick as she wasn’t familiar with the area, soon getting the idea they were being following by the other car. Darting across a highway and trying desperately to lose their stalker, Jean and Dick exited the highway and parked their cars, behind which the car rolled up and parked behind them. Dick went to confront the man who mortally wounded him. Jean ran back to help Dick and barely caught a glimpse of the shooter as the car sped away. To this day, the murder has not been solved. Jean thinks, due to the man’s football-like build and her license plate reading “49R HUGS”, the killer may have been a fanatic of a rival team, though the ball still hasn’t been caught on Dick’s killer.

Unsolved Mysteries Rewind 46: The Murder of Su-Ya Kim

In 1981, Su Young and Su-Ya Kim were married and soon moved to the United States from Korea. By 1991, they both lived in New York with their two sons and owned two successful stores. However, their happy life was ruined on June 29. Su-Ya dropped her two sons off at their grandmother’s house and went shopping. When her husband came home later, she had not returned, and he later found her car parked in their parking garage with the engine stone cold. The next day, police identified the remains of a young woman has Su Ya’s. She had been murdered by nine stab wounds from a unknown man; her remains coldly dumped in a trash dumpster. Police determined that she had been the victim of random violence, but were able to find a witness. Before her body was found, a security guard witnessed an unidentified man early in the morning acting strangely around the garbage can that was later found to have contained Su Ya’s remains. The man soon left and the security guard began looking through the garbage and found her body. He hailed a passing ambulance, but Su-Ya had been dead for several hours. The security guard gave a description of the man and the license plate, which was later found to belong to a Taiwanese college student who had nothing to do with the case. Police began looking at the security guard as a suspect, until a lie detector test proved he had nothing to do with the murder either. The police are now looking for leads in her murder. For nearly two years, husband Su-Young Kim stayed in the United States, but the memories of his wife proved too painful to bear. In April of 1993, he shut down his business and returned with his two little boys to South Korea, his wife’s killer’s identity still a mystery. Suspects: The unidentified person seen by the security guard was a white man wearing round glasses. He may have worked in or lived around the area that the garbage can was located. He has never been identified.

First, the bad news, I am sorry to announce that Kim has decided to leave the show and focus on personal matters but we remain great friends and I hope for only great things for her! The good news is that the show must go on! I have thought hard about the format of the show and how it can move forward while still providing deep dives and in depth coverage and I feel listeners will greatly enjoy what is to come. Unsolved Mysteries Rewind will always focus on the Robert Stack Seasons. Retaining the overall feel of the show is important to me so please stay tuned.

That being said, I am releasing a new podcast series alongside Unsolved Mysteries Rewind which focuses on a forgotten Old Time Radio show from 1936 named, Unsolved Mysteries!
