Unspun can understand and empathize with the seeming act of solidarity and defiance in the face of the Jakarta bombings with the Indonesia Unite movement, where Twitterers and Facebookers daub their avatars in red and white, the colors of the Indonesian flag. At the same time Unspun thinks that Anita has raised an important question in her blog, Finally Woken.

“But here I must ask one question. Is that it?

I think most Indonesians are deeply traumatic by the media coverage on the previous attacks that sent the country into a despair for a long time. We all suffered from the damage in the economy, travel warning, the crash of national tourism industry, lack of foreign investments and many other impacts on the bomb blasts since 2002. It has taken years to build the confidence and positive sentiment about Indonesia. No one wants to suffer like that again, to lose face so badly like that, hence the strong message sent that we do not agree with the attack.

Not that I disagree with the movement. I do appreciate the initiation, but I don’t see the long term benefits we would make by putting red-and-white flag in our avatars. And it seems that The Jakarta Globe agrees with me: But some Web users were skeptical that the swelling of online patriotism would have any lasting impact. “This incident has had much bigger impact on patriotism among the young than 30 years of propaganda,” technology journalist Aulia Masna wrote on Twitter. “But yesterday’s call for unity needs to be followed up by offline activities.”

I think the most important thing we should do from this so-called Indonesia Unite pressure group is to push the government, our government, to find who did this. We are too scared that the impact of the attack would be like the bombs in 2002-2004, we have forgotten to keep pestering Indonesian government to be committed 100% to find the terrorist and would not rest until we do. We’re having too much fun pointing our fingers to A or B as the mastermind of the attacks, forgetting our duty as citizens is to make sure our government does the job right. No, I haven’t seen any single message in twitter – or I might have missed it? – that urges the government to keep reporting their findings, and what the progress they have made since the attack. Wouldn’t it be more important for us to unite to monitor what they have been doing – rather than making visits to the victims and giving emotional and moving speech to the nation? Have they formed special task forces to handle the victims, the search, and more importantly, the security in the country’s capital city? – and to make sure those behind the attack will be punished? And it is not just that, we also need to be consistent on our pressure and make sure they don’t waste their energy accusing who did this and that without actually doing anything to find the evidence.

We all have to do something, something real, to minimize the future attack possibility, starting from daily activities. For example, the government must improve the registration system so people wouldn’t be able to create fake IDs easily, but we – Jakartans especially – also must stop being ignorant to our surroundings and alert the authorities if we see something suspicious.

On the same day as the bomb blasts in JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Jakarta on Friday July 17th, BBC broadcast a pretty interesting news about 20-year-old middle-class, British-born man, educated at some top independent schools, who converted to Islam in 2006 and was ready to commit the suicide attack in Bristol, England. It has emerged it was Muslims who alerted police in Bristol and counter-terrorism officers from Scotland Yard to Ibrahim’s activities. The BBC understands that his arrest was the first major one following a community tip-off.

Why can’t we do that?

Really, having our national flag attached to our avatar is nice, but it takes more than that to create peace in Indonesia, don’t you agree?”

Expressions of solidarity and defiance are a great way to cope with the shock of the bombings. But unless they are transformed into something more enduring and constructive, they may not mean much in the long run. In addition to Anita’s suggestions Unspun thinks that one of the ways Twitterers can contribute is to become the de-facto guardians of security. How may times have we all experienced the inane and utterly motions that “seurity guards” go through in check in our bags and vehicles. How many of us thought it totally ridiculous that security guards can poke a metal detector into the car, which is made mostly of metal, and register nothing? Or the perfunctory walk through metal detectors that are not switched on, of if they are switched on and buzz, they are too lazy or intimidated by a well dressed person to frisk them? Or the stupidity of guards going through hand carry bags but waiving through roll-on lugguage?

Wouldn’t it make sense to harness the power of Indonesian Twiterers to be the watchdogs that these guys are doing their job properly? If, for instance, someone found that the security procedures at a hotel or public place is wanting, they would tweet about it and hashtag it, say, #laxsecurity. Newspapers and other news organizations can then check for these and shame the offender into putting their security measures right, or the Polce could get off their ask and sanction them for having lax security.

Saturday July 18, 2009

Jakarta: Bombs won’t defeat us

By ONG HOCK CHUAN

JAKARTA: If there is an overarching phrase to describe how Indonesians reacted to the bombings at the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotels yesterday, it would be “in their stride”.

As can be expected of such a momentous and violent incident that saw at least eight people dead and dozens injured, there was a spectrum of reactions ranging from despair and sadness to defiance and anger.

By and large, however, Indonesians, who have lived through a spate of bombings six years ago and before that riot and demonstrations when Suharto fell, took the bombings in their stride. To be sure, the bombings were a distraction.

Office workers glued themselves to the TV to see the latest developments in the aftermath of the bombs that took place just as the working day began.

The more tech-savvy reached for their handphones, computers and Twitter and Facebook accounts. The result was a surprisingly rational appraisal of the situation as it went as Twitterers regulated each other and the mainstream media.

Shortly after the explosions, for instance, the TV stations were already concluding that the explosions were the result of bombs.

Twitterers roundly criticised the TV stations for coming to premature conclusions. At that time the only facts that were certain were that there had been two explosions, and nobody knew exactly what the causes were.

The TV stations were also slow off the mark, showing Google Earth-type satellite photos of Mega Kuningan, a business district in downtown Jakarta where both the hotels were located.

Some Indonesians said over Twitter that they were sad and angry at the perpetrators, other said they wanted to know who was behind it. Yet, some others were nonchalant, wondering whether Manchester United which was scheduled to land in Indonesia would cancel their visit.

By mid-morning the TV stations were already at the scene and provided live footage of the carnage. Indonesians saw the damage done to the hotels, police climbing into the hotels with surgical masks and rubber gloves to investigate and, in a fit of tastelessness, graphic images of wounded victims.

By then there were also rumours swirling around the capital that there had been another explosion at Muara Angke, that a bomber was caught trying to enter FX, an entertainment-oriented mall near the Senayan Sports Complex; and that eight bombs will go off in Jakarta, mainly in malls.

The rumours all turned out to be false but that didn’t deter many Jakartans from avoiding the shopping malls during lunch time, “just in case”.

Away from the malls, however, it was life as usual as the Friday lunch crowd carried on as if there had been no bombing.

After prayers, President Susilo Bambang Yudhono addressed the nation live on national TV. He was visibly emotional and livid, a side the public had not seen since he came to power more than five years ago.

He called the terrorists “Draculas” and said that their act had destroyed efforts to rebuild Indonesia over the past five years.

He then said something that left many Indonesian observers puzzled – that there was a conspiracy against him being made president for a second term. It has been barely two weeks after the presidential elections in which SBY, as he is known here, according to all quick counts, won by a landslide.

He then showed screen grabs of a video where masked gunmen used his image for target practice. He went on to pledge that he would go all out to fight terrorism.

No doubt over the next few days and weeks Indonesia and the world will be looking for answers behind the bombings.

There will be displays of unity and defiance. There will be sorrow and mourning. But the important thing to note is that the Indonesians are taking the bombings in their stride and carrying on with their lives as normally as they can.

They have been through much, seen much and experienced much. This bombing is but yet another challenge along the road. In taking things in their stride, and refusing to be cowed or frightened by the bombings, the Indonesians are probably delivering the most potent blow against the terrorists.

Nuryahati Sailima, 24, of Selangor, Malaysia, did not mind at all that she had to wear a surgical mask for about an hour on an Air Asia flight that flew her from Kuala Lumpur to Bandung, the capital of West Java, last Friday.

The swine flu issue has prompted the Malaysian government to take precautionary steps by obliging its citizens to wear masks on plane trips. However, this did not hinder Nurhayati’s determination to bring her two-year-old daughter and her mother to visit Bandung.

“I want to go to Pasar Baru to look for cheap textiles,” said Nurhayati who spent three days in Bandung shopping and eating out.

Nurhayati was picked up by a tour guide from a local travel agent. Most Malaysians use the services of travel agents because they feel more secure.

Ahmad Zulkifli and his three friends, on the other hand, came to Bandung from Kuala Lumpur on their own. Zulkifli, 27, said that he had visited Bandung four times prior to this trip for the delicious food and shopping bargains.

“The textiles and garments here are equal to those in Singapore, while the prices are much lower,” said Zulkifli.

Pasar Baru, lines of distros and factory outlets on Jl. Juanda (Dago), Jl. Martadinata (Riau) as well as Jl. Setiabudi are the main places where Malaysian tourists spend most of their money. Jeans outlets also attract these tourists and make them feel at home.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle gave its chairwoman Megawati Sukarnoputri full power during its national leadership meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday to decide whether or not to accept the results of the presidential election.

PDI-P secretary general Pramono Anung on Wednesday said that the meeting resulted in six recommendations that effectively gave the former president complete power over the party, also known as the PDI-P.

“The national meeting decided to give up all decisions to our chairwoman, who was also our presidential candidate, to take strategic steps in dealing with any political situations and our party’s policies in the future,” Pramono said.

Eric Ellis

July 15, 2009

MIGHT it just be that after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s sweeping re-election, the era of Indonesia’s grasping cronies is coming to an end?

These free-wheeling cronies have been a lawless cancer on the Indonesian economy for too long; the reason why so much of Indonesia doesn’t work properly — why its roads are pot-holed, why badly built bridges, buildings and dams collapse, why its technological backbone is dysfunctional, why consumers are abused, why its justice system is corrupt, why the oxygen-sustaining Borneo rainforests are logged to within an inch of their lives.

Cronies are to Indonesia what politically connected oligarchs are to Russia, except they’ve been around longer. Their fathers were to some extent commercial pioneers in the newly independent Indonesia, and there was then a role for them, because the new nation needed to be built, and built fast.

Their contracts and businesses were largely based on proximity to the military and the ruling family, which, save for the last decade of “reformasi”, has been largely the same thing, be it the Soehartos or the Soekarnos before them. Foreign investors quickly figured it out — joint-venture partners were chosen because they were well connected with the palace, not because they were great operators.

Too much was never enough for the cronies, who became some of Asia’s richest men, displaying almost obscene wealth in a country as poor as Indonesia. They should have been banished after the 1997-98 “Asian Contagion” crisis when the Indonesian economy collapsed and Soeharto was ousted. Some did — the Salim/Liem food-to-banking empire for one is a shadow of its former self — but the system was sufficiently politically malleable that many survived, and even prospered.

In many cases, huge debts and wrong-way bets on the market were simply ignored as part of the $US50 billion IMF-led rescue package, part-funded by Australia.

But as Indonesia has evolved and genuine new entrepreneurs have emerged, the cronies and their heirs are fighting hard to maintain their advantage.

One reason a $US1 billion media joint venture between tycoon James Riady — notorious for his funding of the Clintons’ political career — and the legendary Malaysian billionaire Ananda Krishnan ended in tears last year was that the Malaysian side felt Riady no longer had sufficient political pull in Jakarta.

That wouldn’t have been the case in the Soeharto era, when Riady’s father, Mochtar, built the business. Nor would Riady’s right-hand man, Billy Sindoro, have gone to jail for corruption, as he did last year after being filmed giving $US53,000 to a senior government official deliberating a business dispute between Riady and Krishnan.

As Indonesians embrace genuine reform, there is more transparency; the media is feisty, and so are the anti-corruption warriors. Bad businesses are being called to account. Consumers have discovered a voice, and quite like airing it. Reform has meant less crony monopolies, so the long-abused market is voting with its feet.

Now, having won a huge presidential mandate last week in his own right, Yudhoyono has a real chance to rid Indonesia’s economy of these grafters.

In Yudhoyono’s first term, the anti-corruption agency went after dodgy government officials and bent parliamentarians. Now, in his second and final term, he can afford to target miscreants in the private sector, because he doesn’t need them after politics. He doesn’t need so much to be what analysts politely describe as “pragmatic”, which really means give lucrative cabinet slots to political allies. He can stock his new cabinet with capable technocratic cleanskins — and Indonesia has plenty — instead of horse-trading portfolios for erstwhile political allies.

Perhaps the most searing example is the businessman Aburizal Bakrie, whose political power is built around his enormous telecoms-to-mining wealth, which in turn lubricates the old Soeharto fiefdom, Golkar, and the powerful national chamber of commerce, Kadin.

The Bakrie family seemed to have been ruined in the Asian financial crisis but somehow wriggled free and emerged richer than ever, thanks largely to their wresting control of one of the world’s biggest coal miners, Bumi Resources.

Bakrie got into financial difficulties last year but again seems to have wriggled clear, despite frequent calls by investors for Indonesian regulators to take a closer look at company dealings. Yudhoyono needed Golkar’s support in Parliament and in the palace and gave Bakrie a cabinet slot, first as economics minister and then for people’s welfare, aka the minister for the poor. But the contempt for him was almost palpable.

In the still-to-be-filled second-term Yudhoyono cabinet, people like Bakrie might struggle to find a job, because the emboldened President needs them less than he did even just last week.

There are millions of long-suffering Indonesians who would welcome that.

Eric Ellis writes for Forbes magazine from South-East Asia.

This is an interesting case where praise and gratitude should prevail over anger.

The story: Two Muslim reporters pass off as Christians, attend a ceremony and took communion in an effort to check out rumors that young Muslims are bing converted to Christianity. They write the article saying that the rumors aren’t true. This is good for the Church. How much more credible than two Muslim reporters saying that rumors of young Muslims being converted are not true. The Church should be happy, right?

But no. The Church is fuming mad. Why? Because they took communion. They took some bread dipped in wine and the Church feels that this has violated the sancity of the Church.

Unspun has only one question to the Church: what would Christ do if he were Rev. Lawrence Andrew? Say “forgive then Lord for they know not what they do” or get his vestments in a knot?

2 Malaysian Muslims stir

anger over church article

The Associated Press , Kuala Lumpur | Tue, 07/14/2009 2:23 PM | World

Malaysian authorities are investigating two Muslims who sparked complaints after they pretended to be Christians at a church service to write a magazine article, officials said Tuesday.

The investigation poses a fresh challenge for the government in its efforts to reduce religious friction in this ethnic Malay Muslim-majority country, where religious minorities have complained that their rights are being sidelined in favor of Islam.

A churchgoer filed a police complaint last week after reading an article in the monthly Malay-language Al-Islam magazine written by contributor who described how he attended a Roman Catholic mass with his friend and hid his Muslim identity.

The writer said they were trying to confirm rumors that many Muslim teenagers were being converted to Christianity in Kuala Lumpur’s churches every Sunday. He described how they tasted communion wafers to blend in with the crowd, but found no evidence to support the rumors.

Rev. Lawrence Andrew, the editor of the Herald, the Catholic church’s main publication in Malaysia, said the men had “insulted the Christians” through their actions.

“For us, this is a very holy matter,” Andrew told The Associated Press. “They have shown disregard, disrespect. … So we are very upset about this.”

Representatives of Al-Islam, which writes about Islamic teachings and news, could not immediately be contacted.

Police federal crime investigations head Mohamad Bakri Zinin said officials were investigating the two men for possibly causing religious disharmony – a crime that carries a prison sentence of up to five years.

Joachim Francis Xavier, the Catholic man who filed the police complaint, said the men had been irresponsible and that their actions could cause religious tensions.

“If everyone starts to intrude into each other’s services and write about it, there will be chaos,” Xavier said.

He noted that non-Christians were welcome to attend church ceremonies, but they cannot take communion. The magazine article also indicated the men had spat out the communion wafer because they took a photograph of it partially bitten.

Christian, Buddhist and Hindu minorities – who comprise about one-third of Malaysia’s population – often say their constitutional right to practice religion freely has come under threat from Muslim-dominated authorities. The government denies any discrimination.

Religious disputes include a court battle between the Catholic church and the government over a 2007 order banning non-Muslims from translating God as “Allah” in their literature. The government says its use would confuse Muslims, but Christians say the ban is unconstitutional.

Iman told the media that in the past there had been requests to “spread” Pesta Blogges beyond Jakarta. As a result this year’s Pesta Blogger will be conducting blogshops as well as mini-Pesta Bloggers in 10 cities.

Hume, who together with Iman spotted specially designed batik shirts with the Pesta Blogger 2009 motifs, said the US Embasy was sponsoring Pesta Blogger for the second successive year because technology is fun, the activity supports freedom of expression and it augurs well for the future of Indonesia. He also said that since last year he had tried his hand at blogging and his embassy had opened a Facebook Page to get to know what Indonesians want more.

The entire event was live streamed at pestablogger.com

Former chairmen of Pesta Blogger 2007 and 2008, Enda Nasution and Ndoro Kakung were also at attendance, as well as other members of the blogging community. Here are some photos from the event.
