Wow, what a wonderful turn out for the poster project. Thank you to all who came out. I can't wait to see the photos you send me. Thank you again to Amy Inouye and Stuart Rappaport at Future Studios for their generosity and love of art in hosting this project. Their are not many galleries that believe in art for arts sake and not the all mighty dollar. Thank you for that!
That being said they will be keeping some holiday hours so I will shamelessly promote them as they are to humble to do so. What an amazing experience. I have to say after the first planning meeting for this performance I still had no idea what to expect. For that matter up to the very moment of the debate I was still not sure exactly what was going to happen. As Jerri and Inez kicked things off I was still stressing about what I was going to say when I got up to speak. Then it happened in a wave of organic spontaneous conversation and dialogue everything came together. The way in which no one and everyone became equal participants was a true example of a successful collaboration. The spirit of the debates was truly civilized and respectful with everyone given a chance to voice there opinion and then a short rebuttal. Then came the performance aspect. Thanks to Stephanie Allaspac and her big bag of props. We had a blast! The performance given by our group was so amazing with each and every one of us contributing equally. That is what I think was so amazing how everyone was a super star. Finally a circle was formed as Inez conducted a brief overall QandA siting a few one word questions with everyone sharing their 3ish word response. A big Thank You and Congratulations to Jerri and Inez for what was truly an example in equality and collaboration among us all.

Debating Through the Arts 4: Contemporary Issues in Performance Art
A Performative workshop based on the Model United Nations paradigm

Stay for the day or come for the debates at 10am-12pm and performances at 3:30-6pm

Teams of artists will creatively debate current issues in Performance Art such as the impact of Performance Art on civic life, individual ownership and collective public practice initiatives, and presenting controversial material to the general public.

Participating artists include: Stephanie Allespach, Juna Amano, Raul Baltazar, Stephen Fegely, Gerard St. Hubert, Daniela Ionescu, Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, Marissa Magdalena, Meg Madison, McCristol Harris III, Crystal Nelson, Jasmine Orpilla, Christine Palma, Christy Roberts, Leah Solo Taylor, Kelly Thompson, Marjan Vayghan, Gregory Walker and Erich Wise. Produced by Jerri Allyn and Inez Bush.

Through a structure of debate, caucus, collaboration, performance and voting that echoes United Nations proceedings, artists and audience will come together to explore issues in contemporary Performance Art. By developing creative proposals (art, music, theatre or dance), the goal is to provide a performative context for artists to demonstrate the importance of the arts in solving conflicts. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jerri Allyn, Debating Through the Arts: Performance Art co-creator is an Artist, Educator and Scholar with an MA in Feminist / Art and Community. A founding member of The Waitresses and Sisters of Survival, collaborative performance art groups, she has exhibited internationally and received a Rockefeller Foundation Residency in Italy; an International Lila Wallace Fellowship in Mexico; and National Endowment for the Arts grants, among others. Allyn was Director of Education and Public Programs at the Bronx Museum of the Arts in NY; founding Director of ACT: Artists, Community and Teaching at Otis College of Art and Design in LA, CA; and is currently Director of Programs at Venice Arts, CA.

Inez S. Bush, Debating Through the Arts: Performance Art co-creator is co-founder, CEO and Creative Director of Gramercy Partners, an award-winning marketing communications firm. Bush is a strategist, facilitator and consultant to the non-profit, business and education sectors. She teaches at Otis College of Art and Design and is currently coordinating the Otis K-12 Teacher Retreat on Media Arts, a Professional Development program. She holds an M.A. in Education, Leadership and Change from Antioch University LA, CA and BFA in Graphic Design from SUNY Purchase, NY.

La Luz de Jesus Gallery presents Los Angeles punk rock pioneers Alice Bag’s “Violence Girl” and Dawn Wirth’s The Bags – Hollywood Forever” double book release and signing party.

Alice Bag will be reading from her new book and performing two songs on acoustic guitar, accompanied by Lee Joseph on acoustic bass. Dawn Wirth’s delicious home cooked Alice Bag Peanut Butter Brownies (packaged in brown paper Bags) will be given to the first 25 people who buy both books at the event.

Alice Bag “Violence Girl”
Alice Bag was there at the origins of L.A. punk, at the famed Masque and Whisky-a-Go-Go, hanging out with Darby Crash and the Go-Gos. But she started as Alicia Armendariz and English was her second language. She knew Mariachis better than rock music. A certain violence was passed on to her from her Mexican-American father. The proximity of the East L.A. barrio to Hollywood is as close as a short drive on the 101 freeway, but the cultural divide is enormous. Born to Mexican-born and American-naturalized parents, Alicia Armendariz migrated a few miles west to participate in the free-range birth of the 1970s punk movement. Alicia adopted the punk name Alice Bag, and became lead singer for early punk visionaries The Bags, and her Alice Bag Band was featured in Penelope Spheeris' documentary The Decline of Western Civilization.

Here is a life of many crossed boundaries, from East L.A.'s musica ranchera to Hollywood's punk rock; from a violent male-dominated family to female-dominated transgressive rock bands.

Violence Girl takes us from a violent upbringing to an aggressive punk sensibility; this time a difficult coming-of-age memoir culminates with a satisfying conclusion, complete with a happy marriage and children. Nearly a hundred never before published photographs energize the text in remarkable ways.

Dawn Wirth “The Bags – Hollywood Forever”
Dawn Wirth is one of the few to document the "first wave" of the Los Angeles Punk Rock scene. Her initial work for various fanzines such as Flipside, Sniffin' Glue, Gen X and White Stuff as well as the fliers she created for unsigned local bands and fanclubs helped establish the visual esthetic of American Punk. The first book in the L.A. punk series, The Bags-Hollywood Forever unearths never before seen photos of The Bags early line-up, with only 36 exposures, Dawn makes every shot count - intimate shots of a band that would change the sound of rock for generations to come. At 4pm Artist Linda Vallejo will conduct an opening ceremony to honor the legacy of the women at the Woman's Building. The ceremony will pay homage to the elements of earth, water, fire, and air, the four cardinal directions, mother earth, father sky, and the great spirit. An altar will be built with special items donated by members of the audience that recall the relationships, memories and accomplishments of the Woman's Building community.

From 5pm to 7pm there will be a performance by The Waitresses called Order Up! A woman dressed as a waitress with a serving tray follows a customer dressed in costume who drops money for her to pick up. As the waitress bends down, her outfit reveals her sexually, as on of the "rules" is "the sexier the waitress, the bigger the tip."

Detroit's infamous underground erotic art exhibition, the Dirty Show®, returns to Los Angeles for the second time on June 10-11. Instead of a gallery, this exhibition will be held in the authentically appropriate rooms of the City Center Hotel. (You probably won't find it in Frommers).

With over 12,000 patrons attending the most recent Detroit installment, the Dirty Show®, has in its 12 years of existence, become one of the largest and most important erotic art exhibits in the world. The show has featured the biggest names in modern erotica as well as lowbrow champions and marquee gallery artists. Satellite shows have been produced in Australia, Chicago, Zurich and Los Angeles.

In L.A. the promoters can still fly under the radar. "Instead of bringing a truckload of international art, this time The Dirty Show® is going to do an L.A. invitational. We want the show in L.A. to grow organically the way it did in Detroit," says founder, Jerry Vile. " We see it as a mix between and exhibition and an art fair, a really fkd up art fair but an art fair nonetheless."

Special rooms will be curated by Pop Tart gallery founder and bombshell Lenora Claire and Bughouse Design. A pop-up version of Rick Castro’s Antebellum Gallery will serve the fetish crowd.

Confirmed artists include performance superstar Ann Magnuson, stained glass artisan Juan Martin del Campo Jr., photographer Greg Firlotte, painter Scooter LaForge, fashion illustrator Richard Haines, sculptor Cheryl Ekstrom, the lovely and talented Carol Sixsixtysix, fashion stylist Bill Mullen, fetish photographer Steve Diet Goedde, painter Brian Viveros, fine art illustrator Jeff Wack, graphic designer Rick Morris, photographer Lisa Boyle, physique photographer Gabriel Goldberg and about 50 others.

The Dirty Show® is not typical silicone men’s magazine or porn star erotica, says Vile. “We go for edgier artists from all genres, fine artists and crafters working the theme as well as erotic art masters.” The East Wing of the historic City Center provides 17 rooms staged as artist salons while retaining a back- of-the-adult-bookstore atmosphere. “Context is king,”says Vile. “There is not a better place to show erotic art.”

The promoters are asking for a $15 donation, alleging that money raised, “will go to unsavory causes.”

State Revokes Successful Clean Air Incentive

How in the world does the state ever expect to offer clean air/energy incentives and be trusted again? On July 1st the state of California will revoke there successful energy incentive program that kick started many drivers into buying hybrid vehicles. Giving first come first serve Hybrids stickers providing them with access to car pool lanes. The mentality of a driver in a gas guzzling vehicle complaining about cars passing them is to me is not only short sighted but childish. Especially a vehicle/driver who is clearly pro-active in there effort for clean air. I have never seen a hybrid jam up in the car pool lane. I truly felt this incentive gave us hope regarding clean air and a small stride in the effort for alternative energy awareness.

I support peddle power! Not completely off the gas guzzler but working on it an most of all celebrating those who do it.

Taking away this advantage just leaves hybrid sticker owners left with a feeling of deception. Shame on you California, shame on you humans who wouldn't support any and I mean any program that will help in the fight for clean air.

In the end most hybrid owners are global thinkers and still celebrate there reasons for buying there car. Fortunate or not gas prices keep going up providing the incentive we need to continue moving forward in our search for alternative energy.

Felis Stella IKEA My House Part III

IKEA My House Part III is a series of photographs serving as playful interpretations of IKEA's unique product naming convention. Consumers love the idea of owning something that has an exotic foreign name, such as Poäng, or Heimdal or Gutvik. It imbues each object with a seductive mystique. But what do these words really mean? Felís Stella, who had to learn English from scratch when she immigrated to the US from the former Soviet Union, has since been interested in etymology, and in the way word origins affect our perception and interpretation of these words. In this series she married her love of language with her enduring obsession with the giant Swedish retailer.

Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, is dyslexic. Instead of using alpha numeric codes for cataloging inventory -- a dyslexic’s nightmare -- he started titling his products with names of various geographic locations in Sweden and Norway, people's names, job occupations, action verbs, and more. Inadvertently, he created a unique retail language of his own.
Stella’s photographs are actually depicting IKEA products -- specifically, furnishings that have been integrated into her own home décor -- in their "native" etymological environments. This series is an excerpt from a visual “dictionary” of Kamprad’s language. A HEIMDAL side table is shown at a Heimdal train station in Heimdal, Norway; a POÄNG chaise rests atop Yaki Point peak at Grand Canyon (poäng means point of view in Swedish); a DOCENT bookcase is shown in a museum gallery, surrounded by a crowd during a docent tour; a couple is having sex atop a GUTVIK bunk bed (gutvik is pronounced goot fick, which means good fuck in German). Ingvar Kamprad himself appears in the print titled IKEA, which stands for Kamprad’s first and last name initials and the initials of the town and farm in which he grew up, Elmtaryd, Agunnaryd.
In IKEA My House: Part III these mundane objects, normally part of our everyday interior landscape, become displaced namesake portraits of unexpected locales, ideas and actions. It is the artist’s hope that these images will inspire viewers to question the obvious and the unknown, and to see IKEA from a different poäng.

Outpost For Contemporary Art April's T-shirt revival night Kelly will screening the "sharrow" sign on your favorite tee or perhaps hoodie. As a member of the Los Angeles bicycle community Kelly is dedicated to an open dialogue between rider and driver. For those of you unfamiliar the sharrow it is a pilot project done by La dot (department of transportation) where the "sharrow" a stencil with a bicycle and two chevrons above it was painted on our streets. Usually done on a road with no designated bike lane but with a shoulder, indicating to drivers to "share the road" with cycles.

Artist Statement: As a driver in Los Angeles I didn't even realize what this sign was until I started riding the streets. I think we need a more open communication between driver and rider. As a bike rider in LA I think the sharrow has been a wonderful tool in the campaign for making our roads safe for riders. I have personally noticed that the more drivers realize what the sharrow is and where they are posted that the cars do "share". I see this as a positive change and an important one. Bicycle safety is what I'm personally most care about. As an alternative choice for the T-shirt silk screen I am also designing a more abstract original bike themed image to print. Should be interesting as I've never silk screened before. Oh dear.
