Upclose and Personal will now reach you through this blogsite. Good news...no more "downloads" that will eat up your time! :) I apologize for the delay of sending new update about my life and ministry in Thailand. I have just been too busy for the past couple of months . Most of you know that I had been to the Philippines twice this year and we have been hosting events after events here at the cafe. But, hopefully through this new and easy way of communicating to you, I can send upclose newsletter more often. :)
What's New? Praise God for all His work in my life and for all His favors this year. My prayer when the year started was that God will show me more of Himself and I will get to know Him more. True enough... I was in the Philippines when the year started and it's a gift to be with my family and friends. One of those times truly cherish.

Then, something happened that required me to TRUST Him with my heart. This was a tough time but I understood long enough to know that it is the only and surest way to face hard times. God showed me that He is my victory and refuge! After that, I came back to Thailand and do ministry work believing that God will send revival and that we will see the fruit of our labor this year.
Then "Job' one of our students we have been continually praying for got saved! During this time, Lyza was here in Thailand and that set me up to be a responsible, loving and caring sister that will go an extra mile for her. All these things made me closer to the Lord that I could have never imagined. Until now I stand amazed on God's favor in my life. He truly is at work and He is faithful to those who are faithful.
So, from January - July this year alot of things happened that I had to categorize everything in these entries.
You can check all the events, praise reports, new approach on our ministry, and prayer requests on the entries below.:NEW MINISTRY PROGRAM

I made this one specifically to promote the cafe at one of the big events inside the University. Norvie and Tam are a great help with putting into the concept. "FEEL THE BEAT" will be the working slogan of the cafe. Watch it...everything in it is the heart of what we offer here. Be blessed!
Students was on break for a couple of weeks and most of them went back to their hometown. This is a start of a new semester and opportunities to make a difference inside the campus are already coming in. Volunteer teaching jobs inside the university facility with the invitation of the English Department Head was recently offered to us. We want to make a difference and be a blessing inside the campus by helping teachers, staff and students with what they need. This offer is a big break for us after years of building connections.
The University has approximately 9,000 students this year. These students are in need of a mentor that will guide them through their life decisions and cope up with changes. We are here to help and to guide them through life successes and failures. And, be the walking Bible they can see.
Our Coffee shop is the place where students hangout without feeling threatened and condemned. We accept them for who they are and we love on them. Those who are hungry with God's word and His truth we plug in to Bible Studies and small group sessions. Others who are not Christians we still welcome in our" family" and with faith that one day the Lord will open their eyes to the truth of the gospel.
Okay let's start of with...Tam going back to Australia tomorrow. Shocking?!?!?! Well, yeah but nothing to worry about. She will be back "hopefully" after a couple months of rest and spending time with her family. Continue praying for her and her calling for the future. Tam had been in the field for 7 years and the Lord has put in her heart to step up unto another level of calling may it be here in Thailand or somewhere else. All is well when we are under God's sovereign will.
Norvie on the other hand with much anticipation was granted a visa for Australia last week. yeheeey...FINALLY!!! She has been planning to go and spend Christmas with Tam's family this year and looks like it will come to past. After alot of prayers and paper works, the embassy gave her a three month visa but she will only be gone for 2 weeks this Christmas season. She is excited and everybody is as well. Norvie has served in the mission field for three years now working as the manager of our coffee shop, doing volunteer teaching jobs in the elementary school and also doing worship lessons with the Happy Homes Orphanage. The Almighty as always has been good to me. Two months ago, I got news from my mom that she got saved during a worship service at Bahrain. There's nothing more fulfiling and precious than hearing one of your family members received the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior after years of praying and doing God service. She's going back to the Philippines this December to stay with my sister Lyza. Me on the other hand was already granted a one year visa for my stay here and will continue to serve the Lord until October next year. Thank you all for your prayers.
- We just opened our Bible Study Course with our Christian students here at the cafe. We do this every tuesday. For now, Job and Sadudee join this fellowship with me, Norvie and Tam.

Leadership Training with GIG leaders
-Every thursday we do our leadership training with the GIG Club leaders. We do not only teach leadership modules but we also pour out in their lives by spending one-on-one time with them and mentoring them in ways they can succeed w/ their lives and studies.

English teaching volunteer work at MFLU
- We are also now open to work with Mae Fah Luang University English Department by doing some tutorial volunteer work at their English center. The center are open to all students who wants to learn more about the English language. They have their own facilities to equip their students however they are in need of staffs who can spend time and tutor their students.

Praise God for His favor and for opening doors for us to reach out to the lost. And, for providing all these opportunities to make a difference here in Thailand.

HR Valentine's Day Event
- The Cafe tried a new set-up by singing love songs outside the cafe's parking lot while passers-by customers w/ their dates stop by to have some dinner. Students from MFLU and HAPPY HOMES CHILDREN FOUNDATION joined us that night.
April-May:
Engage Media Camp
- HR and Emerge Network hosted a three-week media camp for Christian and non-christian youth group here CNGR. Originally, the camp was set-up for Christian participants only but the Lord opened this opportunity for the non-christians to have a view of our devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ. Through this event, Job one of MFLU students received the Lord Jesus Christ in his life for the first time.

June:
GIG Club 2007-2008
-Since last year, we have been helping the GIG ENGLISH Club with their activities and trainings. June of this year, they started of by promoting the club to freshmen students and by the end of the day, they had 100 members more. We join their english learning activities every other monday and build strong network with their leaders. We maximize our resources to build up their leaders by teaching english language to their members, doing leadership trainings, and by providing english native speakers to do any volunteer work for the club.

July:
Short Term Missions Team
Chattanooga City Church and Grace Fellowship from the US visited us this year to promote the cafe and help with our ministry. They joined one of the GIG Events and hosted an English Camp in the elementary school. This is the second time that the City Church TN came. Once again they made connections with the students they ministered to before.

Teams are great blessings to our ministry. Students are always so attached to them after a few handshakes and talks. Even for a few days, short term missions team can make an impact with the students lives. So we always look forward to hosting them here.

I'm blessed to worship with Lighthouse once again during Sunday fellowships. Those are the things we cherish most here in the field. Then last March I had to go back again to the Philippines to attend a family emergency. It was tough to go back this time to deal with something but God is faithful and He saw us through this matter and came out of it victorious.

Impt. Lesson: Sometimes we ask God why we deserve the difficulties given to us. But, the question we should be asking is "What do I really deserve for being a sinner?" And, the answer is nothing. It is only by grace that we have life. And, we can have that life to its fullest through the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. A preacher one said to "only trust God's character through hard times, for you know that its the only sure and true foundation that will carry you through". And, I believe it with my heart. We won't know all the answers in life but we should know that God is in control and has a purpose for everything. I may not understand it all but let the Lord do what pleases Him in my life and I'm secured.

Lyza in Thailand for 2mons. - After a year and half, Lyza came back here and this time spent 2months with us. She came here for a vacation but she also helped out in the ministry in ways we didn't even asked her to. The students enjoyed spending time with her. And, I truly enjoyed her company. She's a joy in my life! :)

Granted 3months visa at Cambodia Thai Embassy - I was granted a 3month visa at the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia last July. I was there for 5days with Lyza. This was also a bonding time for the both of us before she went home to the Philippines. We also had an opportunity to go to Siem Reap to visit PCL Ministry and spend time with our dear friend Lois.

25th Birthday in Thailand - Yes...I'm 25 and single! :) (This has always been a joke within my circle of friends here in Thailand...) Had my 25th birthday last May during the Engage Camp. The participants, Hotrock staff and teachers surprised me by doing a small program celebration. Thanks guys for making that day special!

Scooter and driver's license - After almost 2 years of being here I learned how to ride a motorcycle because of Dr. Fred Garmon. He challenged me to learn how to drive one when he came here with Ptr. Dale Denham last June. In a months time, I bought the new scooter and got a driver's license. Thanks Dr. Fred... we both know how this all took place !

For all God's favor in my life I give Him praise!
Hope you are all having a wonderful time preparing for Christmas celebration next week. But pls. don't let the busyness of the season steal your joy this Christmas. May you find all you need in Christ Jesus, the true essence of this holiday season.

We here at Hotrock cafe already had our 3rd year Christmas celebration last Friday with the students from the University. It was a time of fun, sharing, and loving on one another. Like the regular parties we would have there in America and the Philippines, we also served "farang" (american) food, played games, sang christmas songs, and did our own version of exchange gifts with the help of our Campus Crusade for Christ friends.

But, the most important thing we did this year was to share the love of Jesus Christ and challenged the students to ponder on His work of salvation during this christmas season. Christmas is always a perfect time to evangelize. It was a great opportunity to share the gospel to 40 students who came that night.

We continue to pray that the seed that has been planted will continue to grow in the next coming months as we faithfully serve him here in the mission field. Your prayers and support will always keep us strong and victorious. As always, we appreciate your partnership. And, may the year 2008 bring us more opportunities to work together as one and give honor to God with our lives of service.

Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year to all! Yours truly,
Leinie Alambro
She has a gift in singing and a heart of worship. When we have special events at the cafe, we would always ask her to share her giftings and be a blessing to others. So we asked her to sing this song entitled "Only in You" that is originally composed and performed by Alphard and Nea, our former co-missionaries here in Chiangrai. This is one of the all time favorites students sing here at HR cafe.
Busy and fruitful days during the first quarter of this year...
We had our 2nd Annual Media Music Camp during the last week of April. Our goal for this kind of camps is to create a training environment for Young talented Christians to know more about Music and Media and use it in ministering to the lost. This camp was an intensive one week training; where we had Song Writing, Music Basics, Music Workshops, Worship Leading, Basic Video, Photography and Layout Design classes. We host this event at Hot Rock Cafe where we conduct the sessions at the 1st floor cafe area and have the sleeping quarters at the third floor.

This April, we had a total no. of 28 campers from 6 different orphanages and churches around Chiangrai. The no. of campers was three times bigger compared to last year. This is a huge accomplishment for us because one of the vision we have as a ministry is to be a RESOURCE CENTER to other Christian ministries. We want to be a blessing to other churches, youth groups and orphanages offering them this kind of trainings.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EVENT:
CONCERTS – The purpose of the event was to showcase the talents of our campers by doing what they have learned in the camp. The major Step –Up Concert took place at a church in the city that accompanied 180 young audiences.

BONFIRE – On the night of April 24th, we had our Bonfire Session at the rooftop. The campers were asked to have their own individual reflections and ponder about their walk with God. The Holy Spirit worked in their hearts that night and each one of them stood up sharing their own testimonies and shared messages of encouragements. Lives were changed that night!

NIGHT WORSHIP SESSIONS – We had regular worship nights that was open for other Christians who are not officially involved in the camp. One night we had about 80 people inside the cafe. The house was full!

MUSIC and MEDIA SESSIONS – We had our regular Music – Media sessions during the day. Teachers were from Bangkok, US, Philippines and Chiangrai. I had the opportunity to teach about Lay-out and Design. And, I loved it!
We grabbed the opportunity to be a blessing to the Department of Liberal Arts by doing this workshop for their "freshies". Meeting new students and seeing new faces are always joys to our hearts.

Here are some of the photos we took in the classes while singing some english songs and teaching them voice and instrument lessons.
Special thanks to CCC guys (Ramsey, Jess, Tabitha and Amanda) for helping us during the first week. You guys rock! :)

Short term teams give us, missionaries, a break in the ministry FOR THEY DO IT ALL... :) From reaching out to the students to designing the cafe and painting the walls. And, from teaching English language to doing Science shows with Grade School students. And, not to mention dancing "the chicken dance" with the orphans. They are ALL AMAZING!!!
Once again we appreciate you! And, thank you for the fellowship and for all the help. See you again soon.

Over a thousand students come here to have lunch everyday. As part of the promotion that day; we had a concert, gave out Hot Rock stickers (thanks to Ms. Alice) and brochures, and set-up a booth to sell our famous "aroi" cakes. :)

Thanks to all volunteers! - to all students, CCC guys and Meow...
As you all know, Hot Rock and Emerge Ministries offer Media Camps annually to Christian ministries as part of our vision to be a resource center in Chiangrai. With the success of the previous events and the need to give talented young Christians a creative - competent training environment in Media -

Emerge Ministry is launching its Emerge Media Institute, a ten week total immersion program in Christian media, spirituality and leadership. That will begin in October 09 here in Chiangrai, Thailand.

The Lord has set in my heart last year about this kind of ministry that will act as the Resource Center in Christian Music and Media not only in Thailand but for it's neighboring countries (like Burma, Laos, Cambodia...) as well. With the partnership of Lighthouse Missions and Emerge, I will start working as a staff for this Media Institute this June 09.

As part of my preparation for this upcoming ministry - I will go to Cape Town, South Africa in June - September 2009 to receive the same Media training we will offer in the Emerge Institute. Visit MEDIA VILLAGE to know more about the school in Cape Town.
Even with political problems Thailand is facing at the moment, there’s no doubt that the country is still one of Asia’s pride for its thriving tourism.

Picture: me and Ow at Shong Cafe
As the country continues to trade in international market places, the demand to learn English among Thais is also increasing rapidly. Our target University outreach is one of Thailand’s Schools to use English as their medium in teaching. But sadly, only few college students speak the language.

With this, English teaching has become our edge to connect and build relationship with those who want to learn the language. I’m teaching English classes this summer. I have four college students; Kae, Ow, Pui and Mai from LAW, Business and Computer Eng. Majors.

One afternoon, I was with Kae and Ow in a small cafe teaching them English vocabularies, when a native speaker from Canada – quite a character almost at his 60’s, randomly approached us for some “English talk”. It was fun until he started giving me advice on HOW I should teach MY students. He said, “Your students are both in college, you don’t need to spoon feed them with English vocabularies during your class because they can learn it on their own outside of class…”.

- Okay, that was a random comment, may be not needed, in front of my students. right? And honestly, I was caught of guard and wasn’t pleased at first. -

But, funny thing, I found myself intently listening to this man’s suggestions. Then he went on saying, “ You know what you should do, You should teach them HOW TO learn the English language and not teach them the language... ”

I didn’t agree with what he said at first but then after giving it some thought, I must admit, HE WAS RIGHT! He was asking me give them the “HOW TO’s” – practical steps so my "college" students can effectively learn the language.

- Now, it sounded more like coaching to me than teaching. -

So, I googled (I love Google! It makes life easier...kudos to the one who invented it!) COACH and surprisingly found this description: “Good coaches act as motivators and teachers. (Yes, TEACHERS) Ideally, they should be able to convey both theoretical understanding and practical instruction, and they should be sympathetic to the requirements of those they coach.”
Ow (left) and Kae (right) during English class at Hot Rock Cafe

This brought a new understanding of what kind of teacher I should be. I don't want to be a teacher who baby-sits college students. But, I want to be a teacher, like a coach, who teach practical instructions, give theoretical understanding. Also, strategize, train and encourage these students to reach their goal to be fluent with the language.

It was a good lesson for me that day!

Wondering what happened to the gentleman who gave the advice? Before he left us at the cafe, he proudly mentioned,

“Take my advice. It will make your hours...
All I know is that I will be studying Video Production to help me with my role as the Media Light Coordinator in Thailand. Mentors, family and friends said to me, "YOU will LEARN so much there". Not understanding fully, at that time, what the context of this

learning experience has for me.I have been to other countries before. I thought to myself, Well, it’s all the same. You meet new people, discover beautiful places, eat their local food…etc. But my South Africa Experience is far the most surprising trip I’ve had yet.

Let me give you some details of what my life is like here:

Since it’s a YWAM based school, I live in the same building where I do my training, I stay in a dormitory with another roommate. In the same bldg., I live with 40 other new people from different countries and ethnic backgrounds, I eat whatever is served in the Dining Hall (which I mostly like... except for LAMB! ), and I have to clean a part of the building at least 3hours every day, if you know me, it's not a problem at all. :)

South Africa has all its beautiful places especially where I am at in Cape Town. But, the level of crime in South Africa is unfortunately high and caution must be taken! So we are always given precautions to go out in groups which is a bit of a challenge for me because I want to explore and see it all. And, not everyone has the same spirit. I guess, I'm just used to being independent.

So YES you were right… I am LEARNING so much and not only about Video Production but also

living life in totally unfamiliar grounds. This is absolutely a new adventure for me. But, what I do love about this stretch is knowing that God is with me and that He is in control. The past couple of days have been a learning experience…
more about understanding myself around other people and about my ability to trust and depend on God in a deeper way.
As I was praying one night in my little dorm room, the Lord led me to this Bible verses (made some translation):

I always pray for you… I ask God to give you a complete understanding
of what He wants to do in your life, and I ask him to make you
wise with Spiritual Wisdom. Then the way you live will always honor
and please the Lord, and you will continually do good, kind things
for others. All the while, you will LEARN to know God better and better.
Colossians 1: 3-14
This is my prayer in the next 12weeks in South Africa. I need God to give me full understanding of His will, I need His wisdom, I need a heart to do good things for others and the most important is TO LEARN and KNOW God better.

I'll pray the same prayer for you.
Living life out of the ordinary,
LEINIE
After countless of sleepless nights and hours of tedious directing, editing and camera work, my season in Media Village has come to completion 25th of September 2009.
Photo 1 - During our PSA shoot (w/ Maria and Tendai - our talents)

Media Village was a time of spiritual, technical and creative growth. I spent hours learning the skill of producing media pieces; produced a Public Service Announcement, a Music Video and worked on a Short Film. It was an ongoing day to day experience of understanding and knowing God. And, it was a precious time of nourishing good friendships that will last. Oh such good times!

To end the School, we had a formal Awards Night with Media Village supporters and South Africa Media personalities as guests. Amazingly our team received the best PSA for 2009 and I received an award for Best Videographer. To God be the glory!

When I received the award that night I said, "Everytime, I hold the video camera, I tried as much as I can to capture the heart of the story through the lense." All I know what to do behind the camera is to engage myself in people’s stories and then capture it. I guess that works better more than just knowing the technical side of things! ;) Photo 2 - in Cape Town on our way to Studio

People matter and media is only a tool to reach them.

I’m back in Thailand now working on our Media School for January 2010. Exciting things are about to happen! What I’m really excited about is that there are more students that I can influence to do the same. Students that I can encourage to engage in people’s lives and make it their priority more than the technical skills they will acquire.

I want to thank you again for being part of this successful South Africa journey! We are God’s story tellers in this generation. As we work together we can share His story and advance the Kingdom of God in this world. They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. -Psalm 145:11-12
Your partner in sharing His story in Asia,
Leinie Alambro
