Given the plastic fantastic nature of so many modern female celebrities, the current vogue for wearing latex is not as strange as at first it might seem.

Silicone, latex — they’re in the same textural ballpark; rubber-like materials with an elastic quality to them. If you’ve got the stuff in your bosoms, why not also wear it on your back?

The world is divided into two types of women. Those who wear clothes to cover up and keep warm; and those who believe that the fundamental purpose of any given outfit is to offer the casual observer as intimate a view of their anatomy as possible.

For the latter, latex is the perfect medium. Nothing cleaves to human flesh quite as closely as latex, except perhaps clingfilm.

Nothing accentuates every bump quite as effectively as latex, with its shiny, light-reflective surface and four-way stretch. No other material makes it impossible to wear any other sort of underwear than the most flyaway of thongs.

It is, I am told (sadly I have no personal experience of it myself), the most sensual of substances.

This may indeed be true; personally I fail to see the attraction in a garment that must, by necessity, smell of sweat, talcum powder and rubber.

The transgressive aspect is certainly a factor. Latex is to Fifty Shades Of Grey-style shenanigans as oil is to an engine.

Indeed, lubrication in general is key if chafing is to be avoided — assuming that pain is not part of the whole experience.

This is why keeping a pot of nappy rash cream Sudocrem in one’s evening bag is advisable. Constriction is part of the appeal, too: the tighter the bond, the greater the release, or so the theory goes.

Where fashion comes into this psycho-sexual equation is simple: fashion is the difference between paying £22.99 for your rubber showstopper from a seedy website (next-day delivery guaranteed, discretion assured, warm spoon not included) and £300 for the London-based designer Atsuko Kudo version.

So if you want to thrill to your own naughtiness when meeting the Queen — and your name is Lady Gaga — pick a Miss Havisham-style design in bright red. If Her Majesty was surprised to find herself shaking hands with a large rubber lobster, she never let on.

And if you are in search of something even more scandalous than showing the entire planet your gigantic oily naked behind, then your top half (for a change) spilling out of some prawn-pink latex is the look for you (Kim Kardashian).

Lost weight and want to show the world you’re no longer a chubby spoilt showbiz brat but a fully-fledged skinny celebrity in your own right? Black with Dynasty-style shoulder pads (Kelly Osbourne).

Pop poppet keen to prove she’s still got what it takes? Giant rubbery bow or red and white maid outfit (Kylie Minogue).

Glorified stripper with artistic pretensions? Betty Boop red and black polka dots (Dita von Teese).

Ageing supermodel/rock chick on a night out? Asymmetric black (Kate Moss).

As for Nancy Dell’Olio, her dress sense is always so ludicrously over the top she probably wears the stuff to pop to the shops.

Kardashian I can just about understand, since it gives her even more the appearance of a blow-up doll than normal.

Since her ultimate aim seems to become a global sex toy, it makes some sort of sense.

But Moss is a woman who makes a living out of being skinny — or at least she did until she stepped out looking like a wet baby hippo at Sir David Tang’s glitzy 60th birthday party in London this week.

The only logical explanation is that this trend for latex is another one of fashion’s perverse in-jokes at the expense of ordinary, curvy women.

Not content with giving us the crop top and the naval-grazing neckline, it seems they’re now trying to get us to dress like hookers — and like it.

How else do you explain the sudden proliferation of rubber-clad celebrities?

We’ve had stripper heels; now it’s the turn of bondage chic. And, as usual, anyone who, either for reasons of propriety or because they don’t live on dust and thrice-daily kettlebell workouts, won’t or can’t do the school run in a glorified bin bag will be made to feel like a fat, frigid frump.

If they do bow to the pressure and wrestle their way into one of these creations, they’ll just end up looking ridiculous, like poor old Sarah Ferguson.

It’s one thing being a pert twenty something in black leather and latex; quite another an ageing former princess with a complexion the colour of a frozen sausage.

What’s even more annoying about this fashion whim is that, unlike most womenswear trends which seem to either pass the male of the species by or leave him utterly baffled (gladiator flats, I seem to recall, caused the most consternation in my household), ladies in very tight dresses is one fashion diktat they’re quite likely to embrace.

So men, take it from me: unless your beloved has a stated penchant for rubber, don’t be fooled into thinking that she’ll be anything other than utterly horrified if, on Christmas morning, she opens her present to discover not the handbag she’d so clearly been hinting at since September, but a bright-red latex frock.

Short of buying her a pair of new washing-up gloves, you couldn’t make yourself more unpopular.

You have been warned.

Latex, PVC, wet-look leather. It’s all the rage on celebrities and supermodels at the moment, but can a mere mortal carry off this latest trend? I’ve been tasked to find out.

As a 42-year-old mother-of-three, the thought of squeezing myself into frocks made of such unforgiving fabrics terrifies me. After all, it makes even Kate Moss seem bulgy.

My nerves aren’t helped by the strict instructions that come with the dresses. I must remove all sharp jewellery (presumably to avoid ripping the material), while ‘generously’ sprinkling the inside of each garment with talc or Vividress before I put it on.

Vividress, it turns out, is a latex ‘dressing aid’ that helps you ‘glide into your rubber gear’. Well, here goes . . . ANNABEL COLE

IT SMELLS LIKE A RUBBER BAND

Silver blue dress, Breathless, £275

This smells like a rubber band, and I’m not sure I should be out in it as a married woman.

It’s rather Eighties, a bit Dynasty, and again allows not the slightest hint of underwear.

This is a dress that does exactly what you’d expect of a PVC garment — it reveals everything without being the slightest bit flattering.

I can’t say I could wear this as anything other than a joke.

KYLIE CAN KEEP IT!

More than a step too far. It’s too revealing, and so shiny I feel desperately self-conscious.

It picks up dust, too. It makes a sucking sound as I put it on, and feels like I’m wearing a surgical glove.

The bow flops like a dead fish — it’s very costume-like, which is only to be expected from William Wilde, who has made stage-wear for Kylie Minogue.

I feel like I’m inside a balloon

Red dress, Kim West, £240

this sucks in excess midriff — it’s like wearing a giant pair of Spanx.

At first it feels like I’m stepping into a balloon and it takes a few minutes of pushing and pulling to get everything in place.

However, once on the high neck saves it from being too tacky and it’s the only dress I don’t mind.

This just screams 'cheap'

Julien Macdonald at Debenhams, £42; top, £95, Reiss

This wet-look fabric is lined, which means you get the shiny effect without the cling — and it’s a bit easier to get into.

The overall look is a weird combination of trashy and sedate, but I wouldn’t want to wear it in the office.

It screams ‘cheap’. On the positive side, it’s wipe-clean, so good for busy mums.

Two people had to zip me up

Sleeveless dress, Kim West, £140

This is so tight it takes two people to cram me in and do up the zip.

I feel like a cross between a stripper and a wannabe Towie extra.

If I ever went out in this, I’d need a companion to whisper in my ear if the strategically positioned black stripes were failing to cover the right bits.

The pattern on the 33-year-old's shift peplum dress looked reminiscent of the drip painting style of late American artist Jackson Pollock.

In fact the black and white Tabitha Webb dress looked similar to Pollock's Number 19 painting, which is going up for auction in New York next week.

Angelina Jolie, Stacy Keibler, and Amber Heard Ashlee Simpson led the stars in the dark and dramatic style stepping out in sleek shiny gowns, lashing of lace and cut out creations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this evening.

Miss Jolie arrived with her partner Brad Pitt and the 36-year-old sashayed up the carpet in her draped Grecian style gown in black lamé by Jenny Packham.

While bosses at Christian Dior are yet to appoint a replacement for disgraced designer John Galliano, it seems the slow process is doing nothing to damage the label's reputation.

Cameron Diaz and Bar Refaeli were just two of the big names to attend the show today as Couture week kicked off in Paris.

The Israeli Victoria's Secret model and the Bad Teacher actress greeted each other with affection - and looked like they had a lot to catch up on.

But as soon as the show started, all eyes were on the catwalk while acting creative director Bill Gaytten attempted to prove that all is well and under control at the house of Dior.

A neutral colour palette - save a show-stopping red dress - included the label's signature grey (the same colour as the walls and drapery of the Salons Christian Dior, where the show was held), black and white.

The 1950's theme - and throwback to Dior's golden years - was clear. Nipped-in waists, full skirts and Betty Draper-style short hair were the order of the day.

After the show, Bill told the Telegraph: 'It's mean to be x-ray Dior.

'All the structure of iconic DIor, thanks to lots of fittings, but all of it see-through.

Diane Kruger and Salma Hayek, along with society maven and sister of the late Jackie Onassis, Lee Radziwill, made for an exclusive guest list at Giambattista Valli's couture show in Paris today.

Held at the Hotel de Crillon, the spring/summer collection was only the second couture offering from the Italian designer.

Mr Valli delivered a confident offering though, with lace flowers, layers of chiffon and rivers of light-reflecting, shimmery sequins on both ballgowns and knee-length cocktail dresses.

Celebrity guests: Lee Radziwill , the society maven and younger sister of Jackie Onassis, Salma Hayek and Diane Kruger, made up the front row at the exclusive event, which was held at the Hotel de Crillon

The designer used a palette of that was predominantly monochrome, set off by flashes of colour in shades of pinks from the softest blossom to deep fuschia and plums.

While block colours dominated, Mr Valli also made way for blurs of floral prints and everything was softened with textures, such as polka-dotted chiffon or stiffened wool.

Belted waists gave structure to billowing gowns, many of which featured over-sized ruffles and bows around the neckline.

Mr Valli's wearable cocktail dresses came with romantic overlays of seductive lace as well as clustered of embroidered silk flowers and pretty belts.

Patterns and ruffles: Mr Valli used both block colour and patterns in his gowns, which were all adorned with an element of texture, from soft, blurring prints to ruffles and bows around the neckline and belted waists

Mr Valli was only recently admitted into the elite Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Last year, he made his couture debut as a 'guest label'.

He joins an illustrious group of designers taking part in the biannual event, among them fellow Italians Valentino, Armani Prive and Atelier Versace, which returned for the first time in eight years.

The only major French labels that are scheduled to show this year are Chanel, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Givenchy, although several newer design houses are taking part.

Black and white: Monochrome featured heavily in the exquisite collection - but any rigid formality was broken up with layers of organza and rivers of shimmering sequins sewn onto polka-dotted chiffon

The garments will be bought by a small and extremely selective (read, very wealthy) clientele based mainly in China, Russia, the Middle East, as well as North and South America.

The one-off, hand-crafted creations can sell for $40,000 or to over $100,000 for a wedding dress.

It never suited him, to be fair, and we all laughed along when his best friend George Clooney gently mocked Brad Pitt for his walking cane at the Golden Globes.

The 48-year-old actor can pull off many guises, it's true, sinewy column of fury in Fight Club, psycho in Kalifornia, suave conman in the Oceans films and latterly, baseball genius in Moneyball.

But in none of these beloved films has he ever hobbled, so his equally dashing friend was right to call him out, although Brad's stick was no affectation but rather support for a knee injury, as they faced each other in the same Globes category (which George won).

As for Angelina, 36 , she was never going to reach the dizzy heights of that perfect Versace number from Globes night, and proving just how stylish she is, the actress didn't even try.

In fact, Angelina opted for an almost diametrically opposed look, that was quite conservative in nature.

Her hair was worn loose and bouncy which seemed to channel the suggestion of 80s' in conjunction with her black cut-out dress, which featured retro floral lace panels.

She even neutralised those wonderful lips with a pale shade, after slicking crimson across them to match the red accent in her stunning column dress at the awards show.

But Angelina still oozed star quality in this ensemble, proving she has the mercurial props to inhabit any look with trademark verve.

Her father Jon Voight claims he has something of a sixth sense that the Jolie-Pitt children will become stars just like their parents.

The 73-year-old says he has 'a feeling' the brood will grow up to follow in the footsteps of mum Angelina Jolie and dad Brad Pitt and become actors.

After plenty of speculation, Carrie Bradshaw is now set to return to the small screen.

America's CW network has ordered a pilot for The Carrie Diaries based on the Sex and the City prequel book series by Candace Bushnell.

It follows a young Carrie's time as a Connecticut high school student before she makes the move the Big Apple.

Samantha Jones, who is played by Kim Cattrall in the hit series and films, is also expected to feature as she does in the novel.

However, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes (played by Kristen Davis and Cynthia Nixon) are likely not to have parts in the series as they do not appear in the book.

Rumours have been rife that the programme would land on screens and reports in September claimed HBO and The CW were working together on the project.

Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are said to have signed onto the show.

Blake Lively, 24, - who plays Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl – was previously the forefront of the list of fresh faces to take on the coveted role.

Other actresses itching for the role include Miley Cyrus, who had a cameo role as herself in the sequel to the film.

As she arrived at the Hilton hotel in London's Park Lane, her volumised curls were hard to miss as she posed with bandmates Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall.

It's worth it, if the star in question is stratospheric, says MHA's Marilyn Heston, who specialises in linking celebrities with designers. She told the newspaper that custom gowns 'generally' go 'to nominees and presenters for the Globes and the Oscars' only.

'This is not an artistic endeavor. The only reason a global designer is dressing an actress is to gain exposure that will raise awareness and increase sales', she said.

But not every famous figure is lucky enough to be at the top of the pyramid.

For those stars who are not quite bright enough to merit a custom gown (or are indecisive and need to keep options open), it helps to be a size two, ready to fit into designs that are literally straight off next month's catwalks.

Zoe Saldana wore a fabulously frothy purple Givenchy haute couture gown to the 2010 Oscars - it had debuted just days before at the design house's Fashion Week show.

And, of course, though risky - there is often only one sample and having it out of action can be problematic, says the newspaper - dressing the perkiest bodies of the almost most sought-after stars can come with massive economic bonuses.

The habit of wearing dresses plucked from runways extends to other events too, though the turnaround is far less speedy - Emma Watson wore a stunning grey Oscar de la Renta gown from the previous February's autumn/winter 2011 New York Fashion Week show to the final Harry Potter premiere last July.

But, megastar or not, what happens when your bottom isn't miniscule and, well, squeezing into a size two is never going to be a reality, come awards season?

Some of the hardest working names in fashion aren't the couture labels and runway kings, but the tailors who labour over gowns for real, normal-sized women.

Bearing in mind that even tiny actress Carey Mulligan could not wriggle into a sample size for a Vogue cover in October 2010 - 'the cover dress was very pretty but wouldn't go over my a***' she said - most Oscar invitees are anything but a size two.

Happily for them, there is David Meister, who has devoted fans in Sharon Stone and Andie MacDowel. He told the Reporter that while 'it’s easy to design for a size two... it's more fun to dress sizes two-22.

'It’s all about problem-solving. Finding the elements you’re working with, figuring out which ones you need to hide and which ones you want to emphasize.'

His approach means that he creates beautifully fitted gowns for almost all figures - and doesn't come with the inaccessibility of some of the world's most showy labels.

The result? According to the newspaper, he dressed 'as many - if not more - actresses than any A-list designer dressed' at Sunday's Golden Globes.

The Ray actress posed provocatively in very little clothing for the latest issue of DETAILS magazine.

The 34-year-old can be seen lying seductively on a sofa wearing nothing but a shiny blazer and high heels by Theyskens' Theory, as well as some barely visible Blush underwear.

The Fantastic Four actress appears in the February issue of the publication to promote her upcoming TV show Scandal.

Kerry stars in the drama series as Olivia Pope, a professional fixer who aids her clients in making their problems go away.

She also recently attended a panel event in Los Angeles to publicise the show, which is produced by Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes.

And Scandal is not the only venture that is set to see Kerry's star rise in the year ahead.

The story centres around a slave-turned-bounty hunter who sets out to rescue his wife from a villainous plantation owner.

She has been up for eviction every time during her short stay in the house and yesterday was left in tears after a row with Kirk Norcross.

So it was no surprise to see Georgia Salpa express her relief to be out as she became the latest contestant to be voted out of the Celebrity Big Brother.

The Irish model, who had been up with actor Michael Madsen for eviction, told host Brian Dowling that it was 'very stressful in there' as she joined him for a chat upon leaving the house.

And she said she found it quite hard to be in there at times, even though she had had fun and made some good friends.

Moments earlier, she had been reassured by Denise Welch that she wasn't going to get booed, and despite admitting that she was 's****** herself', she kept her cool as she walked out the doors and faced the crowd.

Brian then brought up the fact she'd been nominated a lot and asked her if the new rule change, which means housemates can discuss who voted for who, had made it easier knowing who had voted for her.

She said: ''I knew everyone was going to nominate me and I actually don't care. I'm just not the one to start arguments and all stuff like that because some of it was pointless and I was just there to have fun.'

She said: 'I'm not shy, but the first few days I felt shy and it took me a long time to settle in, there's a lot of really loud people in the house and it was extremely overpowering.'

Brian then brought up her relationship with Kirk Norcross in the house, and she said: 'I think he's cute and I had a flirt with him, but he's got a game plan.

Georgia tipped the Playboy twins, Karissa and Kristina, to win and said she would love to keep in touch with them.

Gossip Girl Blake Lively stood out from the crowd in New York on Wednesday night at a special screening of the new movie Haywire.

While most of the celebrities in attendance stuck with classic black, the 24-year-old braved the cold to wear a short-sleeved sequined top and short grey skirt.

The actress did make some effort to keep her legs warm by covering them in a pair of opaque navy blue tights.

She wore a pair of funky, platform lace-up shoes.

Her co-star Ewan McGregor looked dapper in a double-breasted black jacket with the collar popped up to keep him warm.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Haywire is about a black ops super soldier who is out for revenge after being set up during a mission.

Elizabeth Banks, 37, made a red carpet appearance in a mini dress with ruffles on the bottom. She too was wearing a fitted jacket.

But it was the wife of actor David Alan Basche who made a statement with her royal blue top.

Actress Alysia Reiner's shirt was virtually backless, with a large section cut out, exposing her flesh.
