D–Bridge: The Gemini Principle LP

The debut album from D Bridge is finally upon us. After well over 10 years of producing as part of Future Forces and the legendary Bad Company, dBridge hits us with his highly anticipated solo album, The Gemini Principle.Having proved himself as a talented solo artist with a wave of solo releases and remixes on labels such as Metalheadz, Soul:R, Creative Source, Quarantine, Shogun Audio, Liquid V and Bingo to name a few, dBridge is releasing The Gemini Principle on his homegrown imprint, Exit Records. If your familiar with the sounds of dBridge then you will know to expect the unexpected. By releasing The Gemini Principle on his own label, dBridge has given himself the opportunity to speak his musical mind, honestly, personally and uncensored. Representing the boundry pushing and non formatted sound that was more popular in the mid to late nineties, and giving it the 2008 treatment, the only pigeon hole this album goes into is labelled MUSIC His experimental and unique style is stretched to the limits as he takes the listener on a journey through the soundscapes he has created. Rugged basslines, moving chords and melodies layered with intricate drum tracks and sound fx give you the pure essence of this music we call Drum & Bass in the form of a refreshing and inspiring album. He has also followed in his brother’s (Steve Spacek/Blackpocket) footsteps and added his own vocals to a few of the tracks which bring a very intimate and distinctive sound to the albumdBridge is also proud to include 2 collaborations with equally inspiring and hugely talented artists, Calibre and Instra:mental. Both tracks bring flavours that compliment dBridges solo material and fit well into the tracklist to give you a varied album and the highest quality listening pleasure.Coming May 12th on 4x12" LP and 26th on CD/320 MP3. MP3’s available from the Exit Records store at www.ABunchofCuts.com.www.ExitRecords.co.uk

AI UPDATES

Look out for Artificial Intelligence hosting the Radio 1 show with Fabio this Friday. Since deciding to take a year out from releasing material, they have worked hard on putting together their long awaited debut artist album on V recordings which is due for release this September 2008. Expect many collaborations and guest vocalists from the likes of DJ Marky, D Bridge, Roy Davis Junior, Fat Freddies Drop, Ben Westbeech, Robert Owens and DRS to name but a few. Also in the pipeline over the next month to complete this project are collaborations with both DJ Die and Krust. AI have recently remixed Goldie's Letting Go which is being hammered by many of the main A–list DJs, due for release this spring. Last year AI launched sister label 'Integral Records' which is already currently on its 5th release. The aim is to release the cream of the crop from the growing talent around them. Artists featured on the label include Zero T, Alix Perez, Calibre (Forthcoming), Logistics, Survival, Lomax and Heist to name but a few. Expect album and compilation projects later this year as well as Widescreen Recordings to relaunch later this year.

CYANTIFIC: SEX EDUCATION DOA MIX

The saying goes that two heads are better than one, and that saying is more than evident in today’s Drum and Bass community than ever before. High School friends turned DNB duo Cyantific are one of the many teams coming out on top as of late, using their diverse backgrounds and personal tastes to rock dance floors around the world. As teenagers in South–West London, Matt was busy playing in a metal band at school while Jon was listening to pirate radio stations and hip–hop. After Jon played some of the music he had been working on at home, they began collaborating together on tunes. They assert that they’re differing backgrounds are part of what allows them to successfully work together, “Matt is not fanatical about DNB, and is quite removed from the scene, which I think definitely helps give a different angle to our stuff.” They explain. “Working together with someone else has the obvious benefit of having a second opinion. You have to trust that sometimes they're right, And sometimes you're wrong. We haven’t had a punch up...Yet!”Since 2002, thanks to a referral by none other then High Contrast, Cyantific have been representing Hospital Records and continually working on what any worthwhile musician strives for: A sound to call their own. “The only way to have longevity as a producer or to even get noticed in the first place is by doing something new and original. It takes a long time to find your sound as a producer, we’re not even sure we have one yet!”Their debut album “Ghetto Blaster” was one more step towards reaching their goal, and featured Matrix and Logistics, respectively. The guys have even remixed for famed electronic music trio Aquasky and have taken away affirmative experiences from their various collaborations. “We would struggle to find negatives about anyone we've worked with. It's always been a good learning experience seeing how other people work, because it's never going to be the same as the way you do things.” They add, “We're definitely going to work with Matrix and Logistics again, since the outcome worked well. Plus Matrix has some great tips on property development... Logistics knows about hair and grooming.”Despite their future plans as a team, both Matt and Jon continue to pursue their own musical endeavours on the side drawing from various influences. Jon explains that his solo DNB is a tad more stripped down and harder edged then the usual Cyantific sound. “One of the tracks on the mix 'Disconnected' illustrates that; Andy C was well into it too which is always a winner.” Jon also speaks of the possibility of collaborating with Logistics on some House tunes, while Matt is keeping busy with his solo projects making Techno and Electro. The Cyantific mix accompanying this article is a follow up to “Journeys Through Inner Space”, a previous mix done for DOA about 18 months ago. “I felt like it was time to make another mix to illustrate where I'm at as a DJ. This is exactly what I'd play in a set live, bar the fact there's no MC's or rewinds” Jon goes on to explain that for him, it’s important to take his DJing as serious he does his production. “I find them equally rewarding and challenging; a good DJ is a musician in my book. I probably spend a similar amount of time on each in a week. I like to stay on top of it so I'm getting the most out of the records I've got.” It’s Jon’s dedication to DJing which has earned him a nomination as best breakthrough DJ for the first ever Xtra Bass awards this year. ”I like all sorts of stuff; if it works for me, it works. There's too much pigeon–holing, 'I can't play that because it's that name that someone made up'. Bollocks.”Regardless of votes or contests, it’s clear that this team is in this for their own passion, and definitely for the long run. In the meantime, Matt and Jon continue to consistently draw influence from their differing backgrounds; experimenting to find the Cyantific sound they call their own!www.DogsOnAcid.com

Commix Call To Mind LP

Cambridge duo George Levings and Guy Brewer, AKA Commix's, forthcoming LP 'Call To Mind' on Metalheadz is set to be one the most groundbreaking drum and bass albums of all time. Following in the footsteps of seminal albums such as Reprazent's 'New Forms', Goldie's 'Timeless' and Pendulum's 'Hold Your Colour', 'Call To Mind' offers a breathtaking take on drum and bass in 2007, fusing minimal techno undertones and deep Philly Soul flavas woven around crystal clear drum and bass rythyms to create a diverse and compelling listening experience.Citing their main influences, the duo are quick to namecheck the likes of Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson,Carl Craig, Billy Paul and Plastikman, not your average drum and bass producers points of reference. This diverse collection of styles and sounds is all evident on the album. For relatively young producers within drum and bass, the album showcases a depth of knowledge production talent way beyond their years. From early liquid releases on the likes of Creative Source, Liquid V and Hospital, the Commix sound has matured and grown into a completely unique style, displaying a crispness of production and high impact simplicty with deep, lush atmospheres and strong organic rythyms. From tracks such as 'Be True', 'Satellite Type 2' and 'Strictly' that have already been huge within the scene for most of 2007, with their deep, moody basslines and lush atmospherics, to the sexy future funk of 'How You Gonna Feel' featuring the sweet vocals of Steve Spacek, the 808 State inspired strings of 'Emilys Smile', right through to sublime techno bleeps of the Underground Resistance remix of 'Satellite' and 'Spectical (Derek), this album, out on October 15th on Metalheadz,is without doubt set to be one the most crucial albums in drum and bass's ever mutating and shape–shifting history.www.BreakBeat.co.uk

MAKOTO BELIEVE IN MY SOUL LP

After the seminal success of his last release “Golden Girl”, Makoto has been busy putting the final touches to his hugely anticipated second album, “Believe In My Soul”Having heard Makoto’s first album, I, probably like you, presumed more of the same; soulful and smooth Drum and Bass drenched with lush vocals. To that I wasn’t disappointed, but rather pleasantly surprised to see how much Makoto has grown since his goodlooking debut with “Human Elements” and how much his production has developed.Moving into the future, “Believe In My Soul” is an album bursting with crisp beats, smooth strings and some of the warmest bass around; but it is more than just an album; it is a showcase of Makoto’s development over the last 3 years, showing just how far he has come. If anything, this album shows that Makoto is much more than a one trick pony, with the album featuring tracks that will sound as good on a packed dance–floor at 3am as they will on a Sunday afternoon lounging in the garden. The opening track “Spangle” instantly subsides everything else around you and acts as a curtain call for the rest of the album; signalling the start of the show. And what a way to start; a smooth piano hook that seems to have been tailored for the smooth and sultry vocal gives way to a rolling track that features crisp beats and a perfectly sliced up vocal sample. One of the reasons this album sounds so good is that it spans such a variety of emotions, from happiness right through to sorrow. The track “Waiting” seems to symbolise Makoto’s own feelings and although the track uses a heavier beat than most of the others it is the haunting vocal that seems to bare the producer’s soul and convey his own personal emotions through a truly beautiful track.Far from being just a solo project, the album features remixes by two of the Scene’s biggest names; Brazil’s very own DJ Marky and XRS. Marky lends his skills at reworking the track “Eastern Dub,” keeping many of the original elements but giving them a deeper and heavier feel, whilst still managing to maintain all of the original vibes.XRS steps up to remix the track “Inside your Love,” which was originally remixed by Nookie on Makoto’s first album “Human Elements.” This time round the track features the classic smooth vocal complemented with neatly arranged drums and a deep, warm bassline that seems to float subliminally under the track, a remix that really manages to bring the track back up to date.As well as featuring both the original and the DJ Marky remix of “Eastern Dub”, the limited edition vinyl single from the album exclusively features the second instalment of the track, “Eastern Dub Pt. 2.” Receiving airplay from a host of top named DJs, including DJ Marky and Fabio it is one of the tracks that people will recognise instantly, featuring the unmistakable piano riff, subtle drums and uplifting vocal; it truly is a standout tracks. As you move through the album it is clear to see where Makoto’s inspiration lies, but it is how he transforms such soulful and melodic ideas into such beautifully crafted, perfectly balanced tracks that makes this album what it is...a true gem, an album that not only symbolises Makoto’s personal development over the last few years but also the coming of age for goodlooking and it’s re–emergence into the limelight.www.GoodLooking.org

He has worked with numerous influential artists, Jay Dilla, Raphael Saddiq, and Leon Ware to name a few and now comes another chapter in his musical journey, Steve Spacek Present Black Pocket. A celebration of the sound and feel of modern Black electronic music. Spacek hand’s over production duties for ‘Last Straw’ to one of the most prolific drum and bass producers of today, D–Bridge (Exit/BC/Metalheadz) making this a memorable joint effort. Already gaining heavy rotation from Fabio, Calibre, Marcus Intalex and Artificial Intelligence to name a few..This is the first in a three part series which will lead up to a Black Pocket album some time in the new year.
AI NEWS ON DNBARENA

Over the last 4 years – Artificial Intelligence have emerged as the leading lights within the Drum and Bass scene. Hailing from Camden, North West London, the duo have consistently written dancefloor gems that have had key D and B labels, such as Soul:R, 31 Records, Commercial Suicide and V Recordings all clamouring to release their music. Artificial anthems “Desperado” and “Uprising” on V have further cemented their reputation within the scene and helped A.I. cross over onto the Radio 1 shows of Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, and Mary Anne Hobbs. Not content weith being one of the hottest production duo's around, the guys have also been one of the busiest DJ’s combo's last year with well over 100 gigs worldwide in many of the top nights including residency at Movement and regular spots at Fabric and Ministry in London.Reaching into 2007, AI are now locked away in studio working on their debut artist album for V recordings as well as a few surprise remixes.First up they unleash the freshly cemented anthem which everyone has been waiting for, ‘Bloodlines’, backed with the more melodic soundscape ‘Malarone Dreams’. Both are being heavily played by D and B’s scene leaders Grooverider, Fabio, Marky, Hype, Bukem, Andy C, Friction, Goldie, Ronie Size, Marky and Bryan Gee to name a few.As well as this, AI’s high profile new label ‘Integral Recordings’ is due to be launched soon with distribution via SRD. Expect to see a string of high quality hand picked releases this year. Bringing in all the talent from producers that have featured heavily in their sets, expect to see forthcoming material from Survival, Alix Pirez, Sabre, Heist, Zero Tolerance, Suburoko and more.

MC RAGE

Upfront Industries is pleased to announce the addition of MC Rage to our roster: Regularly labelled as a DJ’s MC – there isn’t a DJ that Rage hasn’t worked with and a DJ that hasn’t enjoyed working with him. Resident on Fabio & Grooverider’s BBC Radio 1 show whenever one of the Godfathers decide to go into the mix, feedback has been so good that there is even talk of Rage getting his own show. Rage is also a firm member of Goldie’s Metalheadz family and regularly performs alongside the pioneering label boss at Metalheadz tour nights right across the globe. In 2006 when he isn’t busy hosting, he’s working on his Inner City Dwellers project; best described as urban rock their debut single ‘Rude Boy’ has already been supported and approved by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, Kiss 100’s Dynamite and 1Xtra’s Keisha.
DJ FRICTION INTERVIEW ON DOA

Budding producers and DJ's look up to Friction, a story of success in Drum & Bass. How do you feel as a role–model? What would you say to those obsessing about recognition?Don't obsess! Just work very very hard and don't rush things. Wait until you are totally confident that you have the best possible demo you could give out. As for being a role–model, it’s great. I just try and do everything to the best of my abilities and be try and make as much time to chat to people as possible (sometimes when you've got 1hr to do a 2hr drive to another club its not possible though!), because I know what its like, I’ve been there. I've been the person wanting to achieve, wanting to get a chance to get on the decks and play, so I can relate.Where is Friction heading? Do you have a plan, or do you take things as they come?I really want to write an LP next year. I think I'm gonna have to take some time off DJing to do it though, but it’s something that really excites me. I don't feel like I’ve ever had a chance to really put 100% into my production due to the fact I’ve always had such a heavy DJ schedule so I think the time is right. If I do it I’ll write some other genres, do some mad collaborations etc, fully go to town with it.What should we expect from Shogun over the next months?Obviously the biggest project at the moment is the Next Level 2 Mix Album (released 30th October), which we've put a huge amount of work into. I'm not usually happy with anything but I think this album is a really good representation of Drum & Bass as a whole, and literally covers the whole spectrum of the scene. The Klute 12" (Revolution / Most People are Dicks) is to follow just after and then we're pretty much covered until the middle of 2007 with a release schedule that looks something like this:SHA011: Back To The Jungle EP – State Of MindSHA012: Down The Line (Ft. MC Fats) – Alix PerezSHA013: Back To Your Roots Remix – DJ Friction & K–TeeSHA014: Mind 2 Mind / Smokescreen – SpiritWe've also launched SGN:LTD, which aims to branch out and deliver cutting edge Drum & Bass from some of the hottest new talent within the scene. Spectrasoul took care of 001, Then the Survival 12” is up next (Tron / Keep it Coming), followed by The Funktastics (Honey / Angel Story) and then later in the year Alix Perez & Sabre’s beautiful `Solitary Native'.We're also really excited by our first exclusive artist signing to Shogun, the groove–merchant known as `Alix Perez'. We're going to be working very closely with Alix for the foreseeable future, eventually concluding with an Artist Album. He's such a talented guy, and has so much incredible music waiting to be unleashed, so watch this space...What's your angle on digital vs.. vinyl? Is the medium still important?Of course. We have just started selling Shogun digitally but I'm a vinyl junkie and we have to remember that is where our scene came from. You can’t fight the future but I think that we have to also remember our roots.A lot of DOA's readers are aspiring DJs, how should they feel about the "dub plate culture" as we know it? Is networking more important than talent? How did you cope with these issues when you started out?Hmm ok. Well I mean, lets be honest, there is not much of a dubplate culture anymore really. There is a few of us who receive tunes and get our dubplates every week and are passionate about it. But I’ll play in a club and most likely have a dude coming on after me with a few pre pitched CD's, keeping the pitch on +2.4 and roll out like a don. I'm sure they will use the excuse that they want to put on a good show but it doesn't wash with me. DJing is about skill and being able to make a crowd dance because you can beat match, know what tunes work with each other, read a crowd, the list goes on. What aggrieves me is the fact that these guys are making DJing something where you don't need skill. As far as getting the tunes you just gotta be patient. If an up and coming DJ comes up to me and says, 'Friction can you give me any dubplates', I just tell them straight and try and explain the process of how I can only send MP3's of my material to a few select people. It’s frustrating when you’re in that situation cos you wanna have the newest tunes as a DJ but you have to get around that. It’s even harder now as well because the big producers are tighter with who they give their music to because there is just so much piracy. The way I would cope with it when I was younger would be to try and do anything I can to create a set that stood out from the rest. How did the 1Xtra show change your career?I think its safe to say it was a big part of my career. It gave me the chance to show thousands of people the style of music I like. Everywhere I go I get asked about it and I do miss it immensely. The problem with it was it was too much too contend with as well as a full time DJ career, studio and running a label which, I have to say, wouldn't be in the shape it is now if I'd have stayed.Out of the new producers with releases this year, who scores highest in Friction's books?Obviously all the artists I’ve signed to Shogun for a start. Alix Perez has got so much potential. He knows how to roll out a hook and I can see his sound starting to be more versatile already. Spectrasoul are still learning but are clearly a great talent. Aside from them I’d say Survival is coming through in a big way, Break has been making tunes for a while but has started to come through more this year too. Blimey there's loads of peeps, I could go on forever!Out of the recent gigs, which one did you enjoy more? There have been so many good ones but Shanghai stands out for pure energy. Funktion in La was amazing and anytime I play in Brighton cos its my hometown and all my mates are there! What's an average day like in Friction world? If you speak to my agent or label manager they would probably say this: Late for everything, disorganised and forgetful! I mean there's always a lot to do. I take my career very seriously but I still make a lot of time to see my mates, it’s very important to keep your head on the ground. My 7 year old son Charlie is turning into a seriously talented footballer which is a huge part of my life too.The `NEXT LEVEL 2' (Mixed by DJ Friction) is released on 30th October 2006 on Shogun Audio. Available on Double CDFor more info, check....www.shogunaudio.co.ukwww.myspace.com/nextlevel2

London Elektricity Scoops “Best Podcast” Award!

With a lineup of winners including Lily Allen, Thom Yorke, Lemarr and Peter Gabriel, the BT Yahoo 2006 Digital Music Awards at London’s Roundhouse was a star studded event. Hospital’s own Tony Colman stepped up in style to receive the award for best podcast from Radio One’s Edith Bowman. Tony was keen to claim this as a victory for the whole of drum & bass in his reception speech – bigging up the worldwide D&B community as being one of the first to embrace new technology and namechecking Dogs on Acid, Drum & Bass Arena, Knowledge & ATM. As one of the only independents to win an award, todays Guardian newspaper celebrates the victory in their feature on the DMAs, citing "The awards also reflected the way the web is leveling the playing field. The prize for best podcast went not to Radio One or another media giant but to London Elektricity" The London Elektricity podcast has become something of a cult classic with 10,000s of subscribers tuning in to hear not only the hottest D&B tunes, but Tony’s musings (and indeed rantings) on everything from American foreign policy to High Contrast’s diet. Check http://www.hospitalrecords.com for more info on the podcast.

Klute Interview on urban–breakbeat.com

Klute has always managed to set himself apart from the many drum and bass producers that crowd the circuit. Maybe it’s because his interest in music stretches back to the punk rock 80s and into Detroit’s techno revolution before he discovered drum and bass. Or maybe it’s because he takes chances, creating music that destroys the conventions that came before it. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that Klute has continued to be a major presence within the drum and bass community for well over a decade. From his releases on Hospital records to his groundbreaking album “Lie, Cheat, Steal” on his own label Commercial Suicide, Klute has consistently produced quality music. As 2006 winds down, this eclectic artist shows no signs of slowing down. You have always had a slightly different take on drum and bass. What are some of your musical influences and inspirations? Originally I think it comes from my family. I have two older sisters and my parents used to buy lots of records for them...cool stuff though, like The Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Doors. Both my sisters played instruments so it was only natural to play something too. When I was about 12 I picked up both the guitar and drums and became obsessed with Punk rock. I suppose my exposure to a wide range of music is what gives me a different outlook.Tell us about the new album, “No One’s Listening Anymore”. Well, it’s my 4th album as Klute, but it came out in 2005 so in terms of D&B it’s not exactly new, but in the big world of music I guess its still new. It’s an album of two halves. One drum and bass and the other not drum and bass. On the whole I’d say it’s quite a vocal album. At the time I was inspired to use the voice as an instrument. What do you feel sets you apart from most of DnB producers? I have no idea other than just being myself. I’ve always been someone to walk the path alone. What are some of the recent developments at your label, Commercial Suicide? 2006 has been the year of the album at Commercial Suicide. In May I released the debut album by Amit and in November I'm releasing the debut album from SKC whilst at the same time recording the 5th KLUTE album. Aside from albums I managed to pick up quite a few fantastic 12”s from a number of artists, so I’m really happy with the way things are going. Releasing albums is quite stressful and takes up a lot of time.Has it become more difficult for drum and bass artists to stand out in the marketplace in recent years? I would say in the last couple of years it really has, but saying that I started releasing music as Klute in 1995 and it took a long time to get noticed. I think with the advent of the internet and forums, people have experienced a kind of acceleration in their expectations and I think some kids expect things to happen a lot quicker for them. It takes a lot of work and perseverance to maintain anything in this “business”. Also making music for music’s sake and not status and glory certainly helps. What is the significance of the title “No One’s Listening Anymore”? It’s actually a political reference. At the time I felt like our leaders were so intent on goading us into approving their wars that I imagined a scenario where we all just turned around and just said “oooh shut up, were not listening anymore”.How do you feel about the current state of the music industry as a whole? The music business is a business and on the whole is run by lawyers and accountants. What other projects are you currently working on? As Klute I’m working on my 5th album to be released in Feb 2007. Also I have a single called Revolution / Most people are Dicks to be released imminentlyFor more information on Klute including booking info check out these sites:Commercial Suicide websiteUpfront Industries – Klute's US Booking Agency

Spirit Release Updates

Inneractive Music is proud to present the return of Tactile to the stable. After their successful ‘Super System’ debut album for Timeless and their stellar reworking of ‘Lost & Fpund’, the mighty Hungarian outfit deliver two seriously heavy cuts to show why they are one of the most in–demand and exciting prospects in drum and bass today. ‘Dubwise’ rises from it’s ethereal chords into a furious concoction of moody stabs, distorted tones and a typically infectious wall of beats. Not to be outdone, ‘Inhuman’ continues the ride, adding hypnotic bleeps and an all–encompassing reverberating hook to the subsonic mix. This twelve is not to be missed!Following on from this will finally see the release of Spirit’s long awaited ‘Axis’. Championed by the likes Friction, Marky, Flight, Fabio, A.I., Chris SU and a whole host of others, Spirit heads into deep minimal tech funk territory with ‘Axis’ infectious twisted hook, haunting chords and driving subs. Spirit heads into trademark territory on the flip with ‘Circuit’s driving bass heavy stabs and classic breaks doing severe damage .to any system that can handle it..Audio of these releases can be found on the Inneractive Myspace page:http://www.myspace.com/inneractiveINNER–XSpirit and Inneractive is also pleased to announce the debut release in a new limited edition series, designed for deeper and more experimental grooves, the first release will be the spellbinding electronic melodies of ‘Sapphire’ and the deep minimalism of ‘Where Do We Go From Here’, taken from the ‘Puzzle Box’ album and making it’s debut vinyl appearance due to popular demand.
Logistics "Now More Than Ever" Drops September 25th

The first single from one of the most hotly anticipated debut albums in drum & bass. It's a double A side affair – with two tracks this good it's the only way to be. "Beatbox Master" is a statement of intent with big siren synths and rumbling subs, it's the got that future electro aesthetic which Logistics has made his own. Topped off with some tasty vocoding and human beatbox breaks, this is set to blow up. "Girl From Mars" on the flip has really been getting dancefloors hot under the collar. Everyone from Andy C to Fabio has been on the case with this tune on dubplate. Rolling is the word here, the undulating subline takes us out far into the solar system and urgent snare rolls keep the dance floor stepping hard. "Now More Than Ever" the album drops on the 25th of September... Don't Sleep! With 24 tracks on the CD version of “Now More Than Ever”, and a whole load more floating around on dubplate, even a mighty 4x12” vinyl album might not be enough for all you hardcore logistics fans wanting more! With so many Logistics tracks out there which people are dying to get their hands on, Hospital has put together a shortlist of tracks to choose from for a unique 2x12” EP which will be released later this year.http://hospitalrecords.com/logistics/

Chase and Status Interview at www.urban–breakbeat.com

Drum and bass has always been a competitive business, especially in the UK where the major players fight for gigs and the newbies are forced to become creative to make a name for themselves. So it is a bit of an anomaly that Saul Milton and Will Kennard, aka Chase & Status, have so quickly risen to the upper echelon of the drum and bass ranks. In just 2 short years this dynamic duo has released some of the biggest tunes of the decade such as “Duppy Man” featuring Capelton, “Love’s Theme” and “Come Back” featuring Top Cat. Chase & Status’ productions combine elements of soul, dancehall and hip–hop into instantly recognizable dancefloor destroyers. Following in the footsteps of Marky, Zinc and Friction, the high profile release of Bingo Sessions Volume 3 has only solidified their position within the scene. After killing it at Southern California’s Electric Daisy Carnival, Chase & Status are making the rounds across the U.S. Urban–Breakbeat was able to get a few words with this new breed of drum and bass superstars. How did you first meet? We first met through mutual friends – mixing and going out at night. When was your first gig as Chase & Status? Our first Chase and Status gig would have been in 2002 after our first breakbeat release.Who has influenced you both within the scene and outside of drum and bass? There are too many names to mention – Timbaland is a great inspiration, William Orbit, lots of stuff from the 80's, Neptunes, and Scott Storch. Within dnb – Ed Rush & Optical, Konflict, Ram camp. What was your first release? 2002 – 'Like This / Blindside' on Vehicle Recordings. Our first DNB release was in 2004, Future Cut '20/20' (chase & status remix) on Renegade Hardware. What are some of the labels you have been able to work with? BBK, Digital Soundboy, Bingo, BC Presents, Renegade Hardware and more coming up.Tell me a little about Bingo Beats Volume 3. How did you approach this mix and was there any pressure to deliver something as good as Zinc & Friction's set? Zinc approached us and asked us to do it. The selection isn't really representative of what's in our sets. It's largely a compilation of the Bingo catalogue with a couple other tracks in there. The standard of the other Bingo mix cds was really high so we put a lot of effort into getting a mix that worked as well. What is your process when going into the studio to produce a track? Depends. Usually we start by layering breaks and beats to create a good groove. Sometimes it will be a big sample that might have shaped what we want to do before we begin. We try to have some direction in mind as this can help with getting from a to b and actually finishing a track. What do you think each of you brings to the table both as DJs and producers? It's shared evenly between us. One of us might start something, then the other jump in and vice versa. When we mix we pass each other tunes and try and keep the mixing fast and tight and think about what we should both play.Chase & Status is known for collaborating with vocalists and MCs. Who are some that you would like to work with? We intend to work with Ms Dynamite as part of a forthcoming collaboration. We also have plans to work with the talent of UK urban music and to try and cross genres by incorporating hip hop/grime MCs into drum and bass as well as singers/songwriters.How do you approach your DJ gigs? What can fans expect to hear from your live sets? We always make a big effort when we play out. We spend a lot of money cutting dub plates so the sound is more balanced through the mastering process. We try and vary the music, playing across the board of dnb. Our main goal is to keep the crowd interested and we will often play other styles of music in our sets also. What is next for Chase & Status? At the moment we are working on our debut single for Ram Records to be closely followed by our first album. We plan to write a diverse album, which sounds good at home or in a club.

From the Hospital Camp:Ok people it’s time to let you know some more info on this massive project! As you know the album is dropping in September, September 25th to be precise. Before that on September 11th, there’ll be a double A side single with “Beatbox Master / Girl From Mars” there’ll also be a strictly limited 7inch version with “Beatbox Master / Machine” (Machine is a new track which features Matt’s own vocals!)The 4 piece vinyl will contain the following tracks:SIDE A – CALL ME BACKSIDE B – THE DIVIDESIDE C – FALLING 4 YOUSIDE D – RED SKY AT NIGHTSIDE E – WINTER BLUESSIDE F – INHALESIDE G – EVERY BEAT OF THE HEARTSIDE H – NOW MORE THAN EVERWe’re not gonna reveal the CD tracklisting, or Download info yet, but will tell you it’s a two disk affair! Disc One “Now” contains the heart–wrenching electro, disco–soul d&b which Logistics has made his own: moving from euphoric to melancholic in the shift of a chord, Daft Punk meets Leftfield meets Calibre in a deep and deadly soundclash.Disc Two “More Than Ever” comes with a crunchy, hardhitting alternative; the heavier, rougher sound of tunes like “Inhale” and “The Divide” which have been getting everyone from Andy C to LTJ Bukem hot under the collar. With 25 tracks in total, and not one of them a filler, this is a comprehensive sonic journey. Now we know what you're gonna say: "AUDIO OR STFU", well the Hospital crew is working on a little Logistics mini–site, which we should have up in the next couple of weeks, it'll all be on there... in the mean time we'll leave you lot to try and fill in the blanks!

London Elektricity Interview on georgiastraight.com

Drum ’n’ bass veteran gives props to young guns By Martin Turenne At 44 years old, London Elektricity’s Tony Colman is a full generation older than today’s average drum ’n’ bass producer—and considerably more widely versed in musical history. Asked by a French Web zine a few years ago to describe his jumping–off point into music, the veteran beatmaker recalled being a teenager and first hearing, in the same week, works by Steve Reich and Chic—one an avant–garde composer and the other an electronic–funk outfit whose interests in repetition and synthesis are detectable in Colman’s own tracks. With a pedigree like that, you’d think he might scoff at his younger counterparts in drum ’n’ bass, many of whom grew up knowing little more than raving and rapping. But as co–owner (alongside Chris Goss) of the scene’s leading label, Hospital Records, the veteran insists today’s young guns are doing just fine.“I don’t see the new generation of producers as [offering] diminishing returns,” says Colman, reached at Hospital’s London headquarters. “We all have our formative years, which tend to be in our teens. For me, that was the ’70s: prog rock, heavy metal, punk, and early new wave. Now you’ve got artists whose earliest memories might be rave music, but that doesn’t necessarily dilute the product. Just because I was buying rock records in the ’70s doesn’t mean that my music is somehow deeper than someone who was buying acid–house at the same time in their life.”When the second summer of love was dawning in his native land, the Englishman started his recording career with Izit, an acid–jazz band whose 1988 LP, The Whole Affair, remains a landmark of that short–lived form. In 1993, Colman met Chris Goss, with whom he would eventually start making drum ’n’ bass tunes under the name London Elektricity. When they released 1998’s sensational “Song in the Key of Knife”, the producers were running decidedly against the grain, offering a full–bodied soul anthem to counter the prevailing grimness of the techstep era. Goss has since left LE to run Hospital, but his old partner continues to hone the group’s trademark “sped–up soul” sound, littering tracks with live instrumentation and impassioned vocal turns from house and jazz divas. The best available evidence of Colman’s classic approach is this year’s London Elektricity: Live at the Scala, which is being touted as the genre’s first concert album. For Vancouver heads whose most notable experience of live drum ’n’ bass came when Roni Size’s Reprazent players glumly manned their sequencers at the Commodore in 2000, Colman figures his band’s recent disc might be a revelation. “To be honest,” he says, broadly hinting at Reprazent’s shortcomings, “I’d rather see a good DJ than see a bunch of guys on–stage trying to replicate their studio sound, and being completely chained and harnessed by their technology. I never would have played live if my band wasn’t as good as it was. I have very high standards for what comes out, and when I listen to the live album I think it meets them, not just from a drum ’n’ bass perspective, but from a musical perspective, too. Being the first group in the scene to manage that feat is just the cherry on top.”London Elektricity’s Tony Colman deejays June 15th at the Plaza.http://georgiastraight.com/content.cfm?id=18476

London Elektricity Feature in Monday Magazine

Get Hospitalized London Elektricity headlines indie drum and bass showThis is a public health announcement: Hospital recommends a weekly intake of flashing lights and loud music, tempered with an exercise regime of non–stop dancing. This Friday night Hospital Records brings to Victoria their celebration of ten years as a successful independent drum and bass label. Tony Colman and Chris Goss started the UK outfit for the same reason as so many indies: as a vehicle for their own music – in this case, the smooth drum and bass stylings of London Elektricity. I spoke with Colman about inspirations, gigs, travel, and the past 10 years. “When we started out Hospital, we were completely outside the drum and bass scene, in our own little weird loungecore bubble”, Colman recalls, “And though we haven’t really moved ourselves, the rest of the jungle and drum and bass scene has gradually surrounded us, and now we find ourselves in the centre.” In 2002 Goss left the music to focus on the rapidly growing label and Colman took London Elektricity to the next level – in the form of a live band. And, until the end of last year, LE’s high–energy, soulful live drum and bass act put smiles on faces at clubs and festivals such as Glastonbury and The Big Chill. But since the beginning of 2006, Tony has taken London Elektricity back to its roots, so when he makes his Victoria debut on Friday, he’ll be filling the dance–floor from behind the decks. Now, I know I’m not the only one disappointed that the live band won’t be playing again. But as Colman explains, “We got to the top of the tree ... to take a live band further you have to take them to concert level, which means basically on the concert circuit we’d be competing with major labels. Given who we are and given the kind of resources that we’ve got, we smashed it!” And if you never got to see London Elektricity’s amazing live act, don’t fret “We’ve got another live album, Live at the Scala, out this week”, says Colman, “It’s a live DVD and CD ... a final document of the live band.”Just back in the UK after DJing in China, Taiwan and Korea, Colman cites his best ever gig: “Last Saturday in Seoul” He says quickly. “It was perfect in every way: great equipment, good acoustics in the booth, (and) the crowd was very knowledgeable but not so knowledgeable that they were up their own asses, most of them there just to have a good time.” The excitement in his voice is evident. “I was a bit reticent about the tour” he continues, “because I was afraid we’d end up playing to English and Germans and what have you, but it wasn’t like that at all. We sold out every show, and we had 95% local people.” Colman has spread the word in the East; now it’s time for the West. And for the long flight over he’s just bought himself an iPod, but contrary to what you might expect, he’s not filling it up with DnB favourites. “I’ve been trying to get the entire works of Todd Rundgren”, he laughs. “I’m a bit of a fiend, quite anal about getting it right. I’m trying to track down all the stuff I used to listen to. A lot of it, pretty ancient – like me!” That’s alright mate – doesn’t your label perform plastic surgery?–Matt J Simmons

CRUNCH006 – Verse & Phobia 'Volatile' b/w 'The Glimmer'

Swiftly moving on into 2006, Crunch reaches release number six with no signs of slowing down. Yet another collaboration and another quality release...Opening the 12” Verse joins forces with Renegade Hardware’s rising star, Phobia, on the monstrous ‘Volatile’. As deep as it is deadly, this track combines sick bass, rolling beats and some killer samples resulting in a track that works for both the mind and the feet alike. Definitely one for the heads, ‘Volatile’ rolls from start to finish with some disgusting edits and twisted bass – we dare you not to nod your head to this!Yet again Verse takes charge of the AA side to bring us another quality solo track. ‘The Glimmer’ is quite possibly Ben Verse’s best track to date; steppy beats, a running bline and, as always, wicked vibes all come together to give us a trademark Verse track. If you are into the likes of ‘Journey’s Thru Haze’, ‘Azur Eyes’ and ‘Sonic Tension’, you are going to love this. Quite simply a beautiful track...Both tracks have received dubplate play from the likes of Friction, Zinc, Pendulum (El Hornet), Fabio & Flight to name just a few – so watch out for this 12” on a dance floor near you soon!

Blackout

"Blackout" is a masive slice of deep rolling space funk. Tense horns and brooding bass, It's the next big tune to come from the boy who brought you "Together" and "The Trip". Featured on Andy C's Nightlife compilation as well as in the sets of the jungle A List. On the flip comes "Bounce", a darker flex with nothing but crisp beats and pure bassline science. "Bounce" is already big with DJs Friction, Marky and Bailey. http://www.hospitalrecords.com
