Sokoloff - - Engineered at White Magic Studios, Canada By the time the white-man appeared more than a billion tons of copper had been mined out of Gitchi Gummi's, "Minong". The 45mi. x 9mi. island was later named "Copper Island" and finally renamed, "Isle Royale" by the French. Today Minong (meaning "a good place to live") is a wilderness refuge and national park boasting hiking trails and two lonely outposts called Rock Harbor and Windigo. In 1783 Benjamin Franklin bargained Isle Royale into the United States territories because of its reputation for rich copper deposits. In the 1840s renewed interest in rumoured deposits on Lake Superior sparked a "copper rush", enticing prospectors to search out the mythical "Copper Island". The Ojibway believed that Minong was a floating island which would sometimes be near shore; while at other times mysteriously move, making it impossible to find. Records from the 1600s tell of the Ojibway's dread of violating Minong. A monster Windigo that roamed the region reputedly lived on Minong so they dared not approach the island without powerful rites and gifts to protect them. 	Brian Marion - Forever Thunderbird Brian Marion was born October 6, 1960 in Kamsack, Saskatchewan growing up amongst the Saulteaux and Cree of the Prairies and the Ojibway of the Northern Woodland of Ontario. In 1975 Brian began a nine-year apprenticeship with Norval Morrisseau, the internationally renowned Canadian Native Artist and founder of the Woodland School of Art. In reference to Mr. Marion, the great artist has said, "During those years of training, Brian learned both the spiritualism of the Ojibway culture and the technique of Shaman art." "As an artist he has learned to apply colour to forms that were derived, in part, from ancient pictographs still found in the central region of Canada. While he developed his artistic talents, he was taught to use the meanings of the legends as a basis for composition in his painting. He has acquired the knowledge from the visions of our people and has come to understand our close ties with nature. He is able to get inspiration from his native spirituality and with the blessing of the Creator, add his own emotional and intuitive interpretations to produce beautiful art." Why did Norval Morrisseau repudiate the Woodland School? Below are passages from Scroll Two of the e-book, Woodland Gold, that consider certain possibilities. The fourth question is complex. Why do you think Norval Morrisseau repudiated the Woodland School? Was he justified? When viewed as a personal or family talisman Shamanistic art empowers while it protects. Traditional pictographic art and birchbark scrolls are two-dimensional symbolic renderings that tell an archetypal story. A powerful alignment takes place in those who know how to interpret the colours and symbols in relation to one another. A vibrational sense of oneness with the archetype itself. Shamanistic art is a creative response to a fundamental sentient need to maintain health and well-being. Through artistic expression, a Shaman calls into play the triple faculties of imagination, intuition and inspiration in order to commune with Spirit. There are many other paintings that I favour as well. Most I have never seen photographed. For all his insight and intelligence Norval Morrisseau was an innocent. For all his bravado and muster, he practiced sweet humility. This wonderful being treated me like a son, and a friend and a brother. I miss him tremendously and find myself appreciating our time shared more now that he has traveled on.. All souls are irreplaceable yet he somehow feels more so. Life is short. To meet another with this man's depth of character and vision is beyond my imagination. He was one of a kind. This short video is a tribute and a testament to Norval Morrisseau. 	Norval Morrisseau - After the Bear Dance Ceremony... Morrisseau ends the Drumming. Bear is laid to rest. Stardreamer expresses his appreciation to the Grand Shaman and returns the Kodiak Bearclaw that Morrisseau first gave him when Stardreamer accepted the Bear as a Shamanic guide seven years before. Morrisseau moves toward Stardreamer and places his hand on Stardreamer's forehead to bless and empower him. He places the ceremonial crown of the Grand Shaman on Stardreamer's head. He takes Stardreamer's hand in appreciation and to complete the Initiation. The assistant Shaman thanks the Bear which is then placed lifelessly at the side of Morrisseau. Morrisseau removes the cowling from the assistant Shaman and places it on the Bear's head...in preparation for the next Initiation of renewal. Morrisseau then gifts the Bearclaw to the assistant Shaman that was returned by Stardreamer. Norval Morrisseau speaks after the Ceremony Thank You people The Blessing is free. We won't charge you We don't generally do this in public. I am a Grand Shaman. This is like when the bishop comes to his chuirch and gathers his priests to ordain.... the ones that he is going to ordain. He's a Shaman... When its finished the way I want to see it I want to present it to the people of Canada. To all the children of Canada. Indian and Native, Chinese, coloured or whatever they are. They're all great souls. These are the people we want to give it to. To appreciate it. Here...hang it up. This is my appreciation for this medal that you have given me. First you drive me down to the pits of the bottom of hell by your Missionaries and then later on you lift me up with medals...and no matter what I was behind...that's gone. That was the experience that I went through.If I never went through this bottom thing or the upper thing I would never be this great artist.
