Fiver, a dwarf lop eared rabbit, is our September Pet of the Month. His lair is a lovely inner city apartment – which may come as a surprise to some of you out there who imagine rabbits require acres of land to run about on. In fact an apartment offers plenty of hopping space for dwarf breeds like Fiver, and he is rather proud of the space – ensuring nothing comes or goes without him checking it out.
Another surprising fact is that rabbits can be walked in the park! Upmarket Pets actually do stock special rabbit harnesses. Although Fiver is yet to conquer the harness and a love for the park he is toilet trained. Rabbits are habitual, meaning they like to poop in the same place – if only all pets were this way inclined! We were amused to hear that young Fiver actually has two bathrooms he uses. Why two? Why there’s a spare in case one is being occupied of course!
Fiver’s name and his arrival into the life of Adele were inspired by a popular novel from the 70s: Watership Down, a heroic fantasy told from the perspective of rabbits. Fittingly Fiver’s character is the most intelligent and also the runt. Our Fiver is only one year old and isn’t likely to grow much bigger than he is now. (Cover his ears now) the average lifespan of a lop eared bunny is 10 years. Although lop ears don’t need acres of space their living environment must be temperate; extreme heat or cold will lead to illness.
It may be surprising that rabbits cannot eat carrots until they are over 6 months old because the high water content bloats them. For the same reason you should never feed a rabbit lettuce or cabbage – Beatrix Potter take note, maybe Peter didn’t eat all of your veggie patch!
