NAME: Maggie
AGE: 3 years
BREED: Domestic Short Hair

This fine specimen of feline femininity, presented here for your viewing pleasure, is Maggie the Magnificent. Named as such due to being both coloured like a magpie and the epitome of magnificence. Maggie is a domestic shorthair, which is defined as ‘a cat of mixed ancestry’ – a description which she resents!

‘Domestic’ is a term given to any cat which can’t be identified as a recognised breed. But this doesn’t stop them from being great companions! In fact, domestics can be better choices than pure bred cats. They’re less likely to have any common medical conditions some pure breeds suffer, and tend to live longer lives.

Maggie lives with her brother Tommy, who she gets along well with. These siblings will sit and groom each other for hours! However, Maggie will not tolerate Tommy playing up, and quickly puts him back in his place. She is the boss of this household.

Aloof one day, sweet and affectionate the next. Maggie becomes your best friend in winter when she’s looking for a warm lap to sleep in. She is also so incredibly smart! But more on the extent of Maggie’s intelligence in just a moment.

With mealtimes consisting of Royal Canin Wet and Dry food, it’s only fine dining for this cat. As far as treats go, she would sell her grandmother’s fur for a bag of catnip! Hate to say it, but it might be time for an intervention, Maggie.

When she is not spread out across the floor displaying her wears for all and sundry, Maggie likes to earn her keep by flushing the toilet. She climbs up on the ledge above the cistern then walks her paws down the wall until she puts her full weight on the flush button and lets it rip. No Half flush for this girl. It’s all or nothing! If she misjudges the button somehow, she climbs back on the ledge and does it again. You have never lived until you have been given the royal flush by Maggie the Magnificent!

Shayne, Maggie’s human servant (because we all know cats don’t have owners), shared the following story with us:

My husband was in the shower one day when he got the eerie feeling he was being watched. He looked up to find Maggie perched up on our very thin shower screen looking down at him. She had jumped up from the basin and continued to have a shower like that with him everyday for about 6 months. Though she has stopped the shower watching, (restraining order helped) she still continues to flush the toilet every day.

NAMES: Zoe & Sam
AGES: Zoe: 2 years, Sam: 11 months
BREED: Golden Retrievers

Meet Zoe and Sam, the Golden Retrievers. Zoe is the older of the pair at 2 years, and quite a placid and friendly dog. Sam is still a pup at 11 months, but very affectionate. Both are clever, and love the company of humans, which is very typical of Golden Retrievers.

The fifth most popular dog in Australia, Golden Retrievers are an intelligent breed. They were originally bred as a hunting dog designed to retrieve waterfowl from bodies of water, or other hard to reach places. The first Golden Retriever litter came from crossing a yellow-coloured Retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel (which are unfortunately now extinct). Golden Retrievers absolutely love water, and their layered coat is perfect for swimming. The dense inner layer keeps them warm in the water, and the outer layer is water repellant. The intelligence of a Golden Retriever makes it a breed that can fill a wide variety of roles. Today they are used as guide dogs, hearing dogs, illegal drug detectors, search and rescue dogs, and for their original purpose – retrieving hunted game.

Zoe and Sam love each other just as much as they love their humans. They also get along well with their other house-mate, a Maltese Shih-Tzu. Even though they’re friendly to visitors who come to the door, Zoe and Sam also make excellent guard dogs. And if they’re lucky, one might even be able to squeeze into bed with their owner Sally. But, space is limited, so it’s first in, best dressed in this house!

Advance dry food (sometimes mixed with Advance tinned food) makes up Zoe and Sam’s diet. Once a week they also get a meal of boiled chicken with rice and vegetables. Yum! Their favourite foods to be treated with are Kirby Pet brand kangaroo sausages, pig ears, and chocolate drops – all exclusive to our Vic Market store!

Once the pair was happily playing at a local dog park. Everyone was enjoying themselves until another dog came over and started playing with Zoe. This interloper clearly hadn’t been shown how to play nice with others, as he was much too rough for Zoe and bowled her over! It was then that good old Sam stepped up to the plate. He stood in front of Zoe, and growled until the other dog ran away with his tail between his legs.

NAME: Poncho
AGE: 2 and a half years
BREED: Pug X Beagle

Poncho is a 2 and a half year old Pug X Beagle, also known as a ‘Puggle’. The picture above shows him at the tender age of 11 months and was just too adorable to resist sharing! Poncho was named after this art print, and you can certainly see the resemblance!

Puggles are a relatively young breed, first bred in the 1980s. They are known to be very brave, curious and affectionate. Poncho is always cheerful, happy when his family is around, and can get excited when he realises he’s about to get a feed. Poncho is fed on Hill’s Science Diet and 4Legs meat with added vegetables or egg. Once a week he gets a big bone as a treat, and a stuffed Kong for the day. Anything that is edible makes a great treat for Poncho. This cross breed absolutely loves food, so it’s important to remember not to over-feed them.

An active dog, Poncho enjoys playing energetically. He loves swimming in the river, biting the waves at the beach, and fetching sticks along the shore. He is super friendly, sociable, playful, fun-loving and is a bit of a clown. His funny antics always makes his family laugh.

Poncho loves to run with the bigger dogs, often thinking he is a much larger dog too! His Beagle genes have given him an excellent sense of smell. When he’s on a scent he can be independent and curious, and would probably make a great detective.

Poncho is a friend to everyone, except for the cat next door who remains his arch enemy. His best mates are Pearl, an Alaskan Malamute named Tyler, and his pug cousin Mimo. He loves playing chasing games, fetching, and rough-housing with his friends. On the occasions when there’s a fetchable item involved, the cheeky monkey often runs off with it so the rest of the pack have to chase him to retrieve it!
