Torstrasse 111 is an upcoming contemporary location for art, created by a group of artists who restored the buildings original structure and created in that way various art spaces and studios. I was invited to document the painting action by well-known Washington-native and now Berlin-based urban artist James Bullough, who spray-painted two huge giants onto the walls of one of the new art spaces…

Urban Tools: Creating like a Pro

During my shootings for the Urban Artists in Action #1 series, I every now and again caught myself in the act of focusing not on the artist or the artwork, but on the creative tools. For that reason, I ended up with a great collection of photos showing spray cans, brushes, paint buckets, masking tape, markers, gloves, even more cans, fire-extinguishers, and everything else a street or graffiti artist probably needs…

I decided to select some of the best, bring them all together, and creating in that way a totally new series, entitled Urban Tools: Creating like a Pro! Ironically, this new urban art photo series is the exact opposite of my former series: Instead of documenting a creative head while dynamically working, it’s now all about the artists static equipment – you could say I created urban art still lifes. To carry this contrariness to extremes I made the decision to keep each photograph in black and white, to concentrate on its basic elements.

Urban Artists in Action #1

The first part of the Urban Artists in Action series presenting graffiti and street artists at work was mainly taken during 2010 in Berlin and London. A selection of 49 photographic works of that series was shown at Westberlin Gallery in Berlin, including photos of Buff Diss (AUS), Titi Freak (BRA), Czarnobyl (GER), Dan Kitchener (GB), Ben Eine (GB), Emess (GER), FinDAC (GB), Herakut (GER), Augustine Kofie (US), Mode2 (UK), Nychos (AUT), Run Don’t Walk (ARG), Remi/Rough (GB) and Morten Andersen (DK).

The idea behind the Urban Artists in Action series is not just to photograph finished artworks, pieces, paintings as you can find them everywhere in the interwebs, but to document the artist while working. For that reason, the artist himself or sometimes his creative environment is focused not the artwork. It’s all about discovering the person behind those often fantastic wall paintings or drawings…

Urban Artists In Action, Berlin 2011

I’m going to have my first exhibition, entitled Urban Artists In Action – Another View on Street Art & Graffiti, in Berlin…

West Berlin Gallery is pleased to present Urban Artists in Action – Another View on Street Art & Graffiti, the photography of Jan Brennenstuhl, the brain behind the blogs www.urbanartcore.eu and www.urbanart-photography.eu. For the first time, the gallery will show not the result but the fascinating process of urban art, the secret of which so many artists are at pains to conceal.

The show will feature a selection of 49 photographic works from Brenna’s large portfolio focusing on the brilliant people behind street art and graffiti works that we all know and love but have always wondered….who and how? Some of the artists documented include Buff Diss, Titi Freak, Czarnobyl, Dan Kitchener, Ben Eine, Emess, FinDAC, Herakut, Augustine Kofie, Mode2, Nychos, Run Don’t Walk (RDW), Remi/Rough and Morten Andersen.

All photos shown at this exhibition are available in an edition of 3 – some are also signed by the photographed artists! Additionally, famous Australian urban artist Buff Diss will create a tape art installation during a live performance at the opening day!
